What are your thoughts on Varian’s extended family in Seven Kingdoms?

So like, I really could not care less about Vat7k to be honest.

I don’t have anything against it. I think it’s a great au, very well thought out, has a wonderful storyline and great characters; and I love that the fandom took a failed spinoff and created a community around it. It’s a great au, it just not my thing. I do like Varigo, but that’s about it. (Disclaimer because I’m tired and don’t want to come off as hateful; and the varigo fandom scares me sometimes /hj)

So all I really know about Varian’s extended family in that au is Amber and that she’s a farmer (I think) who gets with Nuru. That’s literally all I know about that. I have picked up, however, that they are generally very supportive of Varian and I think they “make Varian question the real meaning of family” or something like that…which I don’t really understand what that means? Does that mean that he learns what a family is and it’s them, does that mean they suck and he learns that sometimes a family is just you, your father, and a raccoon, and not some giant unit? Does that mean that he learns family isn’t just blood and it’s your closest friends? Idk that but is just from what I read off of the pitch and it’s always bugged me because what does that mean??

Now if I had to choose I would make Varian’s extended family the Addams family but I don’t think that would work out timeline-wise (but wouldn’t that make an amazing crossover? I’ve already got ideas for it.)

Nuru and Yong watched as Varian and Hugo argued again.

Nuru: So how long do you think it will be until they just kiss eachother and get over their silly squabbles?

Yong: That depends. Accidentally kiss or for real kiss? Cause they've already accidentally kissed and that only made them argue more. As for a for real kiss, that would have to wait until one of them realizes they like the other. Neither knows their own feelings yet, but I think Varian's closest to it.

Nuru (surprised): Have you been keeping track of their interactions?

Yong (nodding): It's been a long journey, and until you joined, I've only had Ruddiger and Olivia to make bets on who makes the first move. You wanna join?

Nuru: ...what are the current bets?

Yong: Olivia bets that Hugo will save Varian's life at some point and Varian will confess his feelings. Ruddiger bets Hugo will mess up our journey and apologize to Varian which will include his confession.

Nuru (thinking): Hugo does seem unreliable, but he's also saved you during the last trial.

Yong: Which makes both bets possible.

Nuru: What's yours?

Yong: I bet that they will have a big argument. Bigger than this one. And they will resolve it with a for real kiss.

Nuru (taking out a small handful of coins): They do like to argue...okay, I have my bet then. I bet these two will drag this on for so long that neither will confess until we make it to the eternal library.

Yong (writing down the bet and adding Nuru's coins to a bag containing more coins, shiny knick knacks, and apples): The winner gets the pot. And ties equally share it.

For some strange reason, Varian and Hugo found that their teammates were adamant they be told exactly what happened in the eternal library at the end of their journey. The two did their best to explain how grand the library was and how meeting Varian's mother was a surprising and terrifying experience, but they weren't interested in those details. Instead, they were interested in how they reconciled and emerged out of the library as a couple. By the end of their explanation, Hugo and Varian were blushing from the embarrassment of it all.

The most confusing part was after telling their story, Nuru, Yong, Ruddiger, and Olivia were found splitting up the items in a brown bag that consisted of some coins, trinkets, and apples between each other. When Varian asked Yong what that was all about, he only answered.

"All of us made the correct bet."

One of the things I miss most about my 7k fandom days (aside from the people, y’all rock) is the fact that there were no actors or writers or anything. The whole fandom was built by and for the fandom. That stuff was top tier.

the reason ive become an extreme wet cat hugo truther is because back then i was still reading on wattpad and all the 7k fics depicted varian as a shy uwu flustered boi who turned into a tomato when hugo called him a babycakes pookie pie smth smth i forgot. with hugo being a muscular alfa male. and it didn't sit right with me but i wasn't gonna hate on it obviously.

but now the truth(/hj) is reaching us and it's that hugo's a sopping boyfailure wet cat and varian literally committed more crimes than he did at 14. it has fullfilled me. the edits that blur hugo's face and add a tw at the beginning and stop putting him on this "hot badass" pedestal. he has been microwaved to hell and back in people's brains. couldn't be happier.

something that always catches me off guard when i read post canon varigo fics is how little they’ll mention nuru and yong if at all. Like i don’t even expect them to be present in the story but i think people just don’t realize how much hugo and varian would actually talk about them

When you’re traveling with teenagers even just a few years younger than you for as long as they were those are just your kids now. Like by default. Nuru and yong come up in casual conversation between varigo genuinely every day. i think sometimes they’re the only thing they talk about.

Guys I NEED to rant about my thoughts on Nuru because i love her <3 ramblings ahead

Like I feel like in almost every fic i read, she's just like, a side character that's there to make whitty remarks to Hugo and be the levelheaded one. If she has an insecurity or problem it's usually pretty surface level and solved quickly, or only mentioned once or twice. I think there are SO many aspects of her character that are so cool.

Okay first, I think we sometimes forget that she's a nerd just like the rest of the gang. Yes, on the outside she's definetly the most 'normal' one, but I think we should concider the fact that she's the only girl in the group, and she's literal royalty. She was raised with a completely different set of standards than the other three. I don’t think I've really ever seen anyone cover that. I feel like she would get called "mature for her age" when she's only 15/16, and almost always gets critisism when she talks back with her own ideas (like her concerns about the meteor shows for example). I feel like out on her journey, she would finally get the freedom to just be herself, and be a kid and be able to rant on about her intrests with the rest of the group. It could be a struggle at first, but it would be awesome to see her getting more comfortable with the group the longer they spend together! Nerds encouraging nerdy rants lol

Since she is a kingdom figurehead, you could also argue that she always has a lot on her hands (especially since she's very proactive when it comes to science and solving problems). This could bring up a need to be productive, or always feeling like she needs to make the right decision, even for the littlest things.

I also feel like a lot of the time she's potrayed as the "right" one, who is 100% right when it comes to stuff like arguing with Hugo. Since they're opposites when it comes to class, they often are compared through that lense. I think it's cool just having Nuru tell Hugo off for judging a book by its cover, but I feel like they have a lot more in common than they realize. I think it would be interesting to see Nuru judging a book by its cover too. Maybe not to the degree that Hugo does, but I feel like calling out both their judging would not only call out character flaws, but it also enforces that even though they hate eachother and would never want to be like the other, they have a lot of the same flaws.

Also, being sheltered in a palace her whole life, I think she might think kind of black and white sometimes, and while she knows when people are just being mean as an act, she might struggle when it comes to people like reformed criminals.

Maybe she's able to be meaner to Hugo because she justifies it by telling herself he's criminal, and therefore bad, possibly glossing over the reasons he might be like that (maybe it crosses her mind, but she tells herself it's not a good enough reason, because stealing is still stealing, and he literally steals EVERYTHING. Even little trinkets and stuff he definitely doesn't need!). When they find out about Varian's criminal history, maybe she reexamines her views on morality and how she used to see people, because by her standards, Varian is a 'bad guy' who's caused harm to SO many people, but he's also the kind, caring, helpful friend that she's been traveling with who would never willingly hurt anyone.

Moving on to Amber x Nuru, I honestly never find myself liking the ship because Amber isn't developed enough which is fine. I don't think every character has to be a magnificent work of art. Side characters are side characters, but their romance is usually written like: "wow that girl is cute! I have a crush now!" Which is cool, but then that's about as far as it gets, then timeskip! Or offscreen they're a couple now. I know it's a side couple so it won't have as much devlopment as something like Varigo, but I never really see their dynamic play out in different situations. Like I don't know how to explain it, but it feels like they solely exist to be a couple? Amber sometimes just feels like an extention of Nuru, and their relationship feels surface level a lot of the time.

I feel like too often she's just watered down to the nice, smart, grounded friend, and I don't know I just think there’s so much more to explore with her. She’s not just some side character. She's literally part of the main cast! Even in fanart I feel like she doesn't really get a lot of stuff besides funny art and just like, pictures meant to look pretty. Unlike something you get a lot with characters like Varian or Hugo.

And honestly I get it. Some characters you just don't take an intrest in. I know I find Varian, Hugo, and Nuru more relatable than I find Yong, but I feel like part of that is developing their characters rather than just seeing them on a surface level. Ofc there are exceptions and there are some stories that dive deeper into Nuru's character out there! I just happen to see this A LOT.

Varian has a thing for people who wear glasses (think megane). To him, a person's attractiveness goes up when they wear glasses because it helps frame people's faces so well. Sadly, when he tries wearing glasses himself, he just looks dorky, so he's low key jealous of people who pull them off so nicely. Instead, he wears goggles for their more practical use until maybe one day when eye glasses won't look so off on him.

He would rather die than admit this to Hugo.

it is true that Hugo tends to filter more between the Twos and teases Varian constantly, but i think that after several months of relationships Varian begins to realize and consolidate the idea of ​​being attractive (not that he normally isn't) in Hugo's eyes.

Okay so this is part of the process that I end up making cuz there was a bunch of trial and error in this process because whenever I was doing like the front the front the front and the thing I was getting a little bit confused cuz I was having too many ideas at once and it didn't work out as you think it will but at the end I end up like merging some of those ideas into one and end up looking pretty good that this is the stupidest sketch of how it was looking at the beginning in the terms of the title and stuff

Now the bass that instrument took so long to get it right cuz listen I end up studying technical draw in architecture and if I see something that doesn't have the right perspective I'm killing myself

So of course I was going to get into technical details with creating or drawing the bass

And also in the first parts you can kind of see how it was at the beginning like the colors and stuff trial and error yada yada yada

And I end up making some color arrangements cuz I want this to be bright and stuff and I didn't want this to be pale or look a little bit weird I wanted to have the right contrast

And also talking about contrast you can see the pictures in black and white that's because I wanted to get rid of the contrast and I didn't want something to not pop up right using the wrong colors so that's why there's black and white pictures yes

And also as I know that @aziraphalesbookkeeper favorite color is green cuz I asked that in the ask box I end up placing a bunch of green and several places in the complete piece or the complete render

And also yes the thing that Google was wearing it was going to have some pins with like some flags or whatever and that didn't make up to the end because I was tired and I was lazy and I didn't want to do more things in the jacket

In for the boots I end up searching on Pinterest several things regarding I don't know ehhh Punk boots or something like that and at the end of the day I end up just getting in genshin to look at my wriottesley and admire or have a treaty view of some boots that are similar to the things that I wanted to draw

And also talking about the boots yeah there is not that many things on the boots and I end up getting lazy and tired of drawing details on the boots but it wasn't worth it at the end of the day

And also in the part of Hugo's pants I was thinking into creating like this patches that punk pants end up having with some band names or something embroidered into them cuz that looks cool and I think it matches his personality in some sort of way and I kind of did that it doesn't look that much in contrast with they're saying something his pants but they're there and that's what it matters

Also another little detail in the part of the front I was just searching for several inspiration on rock or metal covers for albums and stuff and I didn't find much of inspiration into that but then I look into some posters and stuff like that and that was just a boost of inspiration and that's why the fronts in the thing end up going from whatever you see on that thing that has like pngs of a scrap of papers and something is already in some kind of text of a chat cuz I remember that in the story both of them end up talking on chat and stuff

On my head it was looking right but then I put it into the actual canvas and it was looking like shit to me so that idea was a scratched and he didn't make it up to the end hehe

And I think that settled it and that's it basically for all maybe I will read all this shit later and find out something that I missed but that's it

He ends up breaking into the museum with said nemesis to look at some paintings.

Started a new job today and now I’m imagining Varigo as waiters

Varian- really hard working, loves serving tables, gets great tips, messes up peoples orders sometimes but he’s just so cute and charming he’s usually forgivable, when Rapunzel and Eugene visit he charges them less on drinks, (oops I forgot to put in you got a Pepsi instead of a water oh well) colors the kids coloring pages, really sucks at cleaning tables someone has to go in after him (Hugo)

Hugo- hates his job, hates serving tables, prefers to clean them because he doesn’t have to interact with people, enemies with the cooks, makes awful tips and gripes about it, puts his hair in the food of people he doesn’t like, steals Varian’s tips, actually really good at his job

one of my (Not varigo) vat7k headcanons is that nuru, varian and hugo despite not being like, the Same sizes (Duh) sometimes will swap clothes between each other on the trip. Its mostly just out of convenience, since they can only keep so much luggage, but sometimes its a form of affection. This is much later in the journey, ofc, since early on nuru and hugo would rather kill themselves than even touch each other, but at a certain point they become pretty chill w it

Its all pretty basic stuff, like varian and nuru borrowing each others dress shirts if one is dirty, varian/nuru lending hugo a coat or a warm sweater, or even just stealing stuff solely to piss each other off….Stuff like that

However….yong, being the one outlier as the short, fat kid obviously….Cant fit any of the others clothes. And a lot of his clothes are too short on them, so for the most part hes just left out, and although he tries to play it cool, its obvious hes Really embarrassed about this and that it bugs him a lot.

Hugo ends up one day taking note of this and feels bad, so he takes one of his old vests thats maybe a little too short for him or just smthn he doesnt mind getting rid of, and for the next few weeks spends a lot of his spare time altering it. she doesnt measure anything bc she wants it to be a surprise, but yongs other clothes end up being a pretty good reference. since shes just using whatever scraps she has on hand, it ends up being a little sloppy and having a square on the back of like this weird patchwork design LOL….But yong of course is absolutely DELIGHTED by this. He keeps that fucking thing forever even after hes long grown out of it 😭😭😭
