It really doesn't matter what the original pieces say about the characters when writing fanfiction. I don't care if they're explicitly gay or trans or ace or anything like that. They're called ALTERNATE UNIVERSES for a reason, and that reason is that they are different than canon.

And for fuck's sake, they're fanmade. A fanfic or fancomic is not erasing a character's identity. That identity is still there, right there in the canon. It would be entirely different if an official property was making that change! And that would be unacceptable! But for the love of whatever you believe stop harassing fans for writing something you don't like. Just click off the tab, block if you want, and move the fuck on like a mature human being.

I'm so mad that post was misinformation because there is actually an EXTREMELY important conversation to have about the production schedules artists are forced into. There's no need for exaggeration, the conditions are bad.

I work for webtoon. My publication schedule is weekly. While publishing I'm required 10-15 pages a week. Fully colored.

This means I'm finishing a 150 page fully colored graphic novel every 10-15 weeks.

When my comic is not updating, I am not getting paid. Any time writing, editing, or off is out of my own pocket. I don't get healthcare. They do not provide any assistants. They expect me to promote myself; they chose to deprioritize me before I even launched and gave me an end date half a year in. I never had a chance.

And this is the industry standard! Every company has artists forced into crunch hours, overtime, and burnout. Artists are literally dying early due to it. So many of my friends can't afford to go to the doctor.

It's unsustainable and untenable, and it's also the expectation our audiences have.

If we want to have this conversation, there's plenty of conversation to be had with the realities of the situation. It's bad as is.

something i really appreciate about the silt verses finale is that carson being unwritten from the narrative didn't change anything on a wider scale. because of course it didn't. he admitted it himself; he's just one guy in an entire system of abuses and cruelty and people fighting to be the one calling the shots. cutting off a few more heads will only free up more spaces for new ones to grow and trample one another in the bid for power. which makes how he dies all the more impactful in spite of how narratively and personally "unsatisfying" it is - despite the utter denial of catharsis - for both his and VAL's character arcs. because in the end, they both realised the truth, and were able to accept it with dignity.

I do find it a bit funny when a show is like "This is the villain, they're deceitful and manipulative!" and fans go "psh the heroes are so dumb for falling for lies, couldn't be me." But as soon as the villain in question is ACTUALLY deceitful (e.g. unreliably reporting events to the audience, lying about their intentions) or ACTUALLY manipulative (e.g. using their tragic backstory as evidence of their remorse/justification, blaming their actions on other people) and immediately like 40-60% of the fanbase is like "well maybe they have a point and are just misunderstood 🥺." It's like a perfect case study every time.

I get that “you can just not wear makeup, it's okay to not wear makeup” can sometimes be the exact thing that someone needs to hear, or to be reassured about. but some people are really condescending about when and how they pull that out and who they say it to

like, there is a social reality of misogyny that women are punished for not appearing a certain way, with all the more severity as a function of class, racism, transmisogyny, etc.

that punishment can be the difference between employed and unemployed. having food and not having food. being treated as less competent and less worthy as a person not only by men, but also by other women and people of any gender in general

and tbh, it's especially fucked how some transmisogyny-exempt people say this to trans women, particularly toward those of us with facial hair / stubble that stands out very visibly from our skin. like a trans woman wearing makeup is obviously just too dumb, shallow, misogynistic, and femininity-obsessed to know better, so they take it upon themselves to remind her that “you can be a woman without wearing makeup! :)” in the same voice they use to tell a toddler that the mushy peas are good

do you think trans women wearing makeup while going to job interviews or working customer service positions (or even, yes, trying to exist in public life in general) are all just stuck-up assimilationists with Bad Ideas about gender? do you think it's only trans women with pointedly transmisogynistic values about “passing” who would ever wear makeup or dress a certain way to try to be treated less horribly by the world around us?

especially if you're vividly aware of how you yourself are punished for not wearing makeup—how do you not extend that awareness to other women? including other women who would pretty fucking obviously be treated even worse for it than you are? I’m just very obsessed with the idea that mihawk is useless in a weapon less fight like he cannot throw a punch or get out of a pin to save his life like one he can’t kick he’s done out for the count, and this is why Shanks ends most of their duels this way. Because he’s a filthy cheater and Mihawk is even worse off because it’s Shanks pining him and he has eaten a lot of dirt.
