I keep thinking of that reply in my Odysseus/Agamemnon post about how I regard differently Odysseus' and Agamemnon's actions, while acknowledging that at times Agamemnon is written as a sweet man and Odysseus is always straight up shitty, and how it was taken as some sort of defense for Agamemnon and as a form of pointing out the double standard; and that wasn't at all what the post was about for me, even though I can see where they were coming from. To be honest, given I didn't imagine it would spread anywhere other than my own blog, I didn't explain myself very well (or at all).
The fact is that when I talked about Odysseus not caring about hurting someone else's child to start and end a war I was indeed comparing his actions to Agamemnon's, but my words about supporting Odysseus' wrongs and cheering him in his terrible actions, while in a joking tone, weren't entirely a joke. I do think that Odysseus does some very shitty acts, and some quite terrible ones depending on the sources. That's a fact, that he does is at the core of his characterisation and it's what makes him so much fun; but not even when he is at his most cruel does he harm his family, his own son. Agamemnon, while sweet and loving at times in some texts, at his worst is willing to sacrifice Iphigenia. When readers regard with more sympathy Odysseus over Agamemnon despite both being responsible for children dying, I don't think there's a double standard in this aspect at all considering it's never his own kid Odysseus harms. And that's the key, I think.
Odysseus and Agamemnon have very different priorities, a very different view on loyalty and duty. It could be said that Agamemnon acts out of selfishness, but it could also be read in a kinder light, saying that Agamemnon is ruled by the gods first, and by his role as head of the achaeans; Agamemnon is not entirely himself. In opposition we see Odysseus acting perhaps mainly for himself and his own family and men; yes, he is a king, but he has not the role Agamemnon has. As a consequence, Agamemnon submits his family's wellbeing to the war, to the gods, while Odysseus stops the plow before hurting Telemachus but is (depending on the source) the cause of Iphigenia's sacrifice and Astyanax's death.
Both Odysseus and Agamemnon have reasons to support their actions, and both can be sympathised with; it's fiction after all. When it comes to fiction, at the end of the day which character a reader is drawn to or sympathises with is mainly an issue of personal taste, but I suppose it also implies a certain level of one's own views or preferences on morals, what makes us find certain actions more justifiable, or tasteful (perhaps that's a more accurate word), than others. Agamemnon sacrificing his daughter, no matter how sympathetic or understandable the reason, generally sits worse on people than Odysseus doing the same with someone else's kids, because they're someone else's. This different emotional reaction they provoke has place not just metanarratively, but also inside the very story; it is narratively significant, given it determines how their arrival home plays out, how their wives react to them, and thus their futures. Ultimately it determines whether they live or die.
I think both terrible acts go in line wonderfully with each characterisation, showcasing the role they hold in their world, what they value, what they care for, what they're willing to sacrifice for themselves and the others, how much of their own they're willing to give and bend. While looking at the wider picture it could perhaps be drawn that Agamemnon is the better person out of the two, but Odysseus' selfish actions are perhaps easier to empathise with, especially from a modern viewpoint. Odysseus is treacherous and prone to betrayal, but not against his own; Agamemnon follows the rules of the gods. How fitting in that context that Odysseus doesn't die at the end of his story, that he cheats the death heroes so often are fated to, almost as if cheating the narrative itself, bending the rules of the world he is ascribed to; how fitting in the context of those texts that point towards Sisyphus being his father. But that's another topic, and I've already talked a lot.
#Don't get me wrong. Odysseus is super shitty and this is a 'pick your poison' kind of situation#But I don't really think there's a double standard when it comes to the kids situation given that Odysseus doesn't sacrifice his own kid#I really think that's what lies at the core of this. Does that make him shittier and more selfish and a worse person? Actually yeah perhaps#But we are no kings with thousands of people depending on our decision yet cringe at the idea of hurting people close to us#It feels like betrayal. And this is where the moral preference takes the role. Which do you prefer? The one that would betray their family#for the greater good or the one who'd sell the world for their family and themselves? It's interesting because#while in fiction the first option is often the most frown upon while selfish actions for the beloved are easy to sympathise withā#in reality these are usually worse regarded. I didn't want to go there because I already wrote so much it didn't fit in the tags#but I actually think the same thing happens with Galahad/Lancelot. Heathcliff/Edgar I'd say has a somewhat similar situation going on#There are many many examples but mainly I was thinking of Galahad and Lancelot#So this is not an 'Odysseus did nothing wrong'. This is an 'Odysseus did many things very wrong but he didn't kill his son#so while both him and Agamemnon were the cause of death of kidsā their action are not the same so there's no double standard regarding#the particular action of sacrificing Iphigenia. In fiction that kind of betrayal makes characters often unlikeable'#I guess that action 'stains' the view under which Agamemnon's actions are seen and so his character is often seen under a darker light#He is presented a bit as an antagonistic presence opposed to Achilles who is very popular so I guess that also influences this?#Anyway I've been elated by the musical causing Odysseus art and posts but I do have noticed that he is very goodified in it and that#it has influenced how he is being regarded around here (the way it happened with The Song of Achilles as well I suppose)#And I must say I like that less. He is shitty in a fun way but not in a light way. He is very shitty#Definitely not better than Agamemnon depending on the perspective you take. I can't believe I'm 'defending' Agamemnon#He is not my thing at all I'm all for selfish actions for oneself and the loved ones through manipulationā#lies and scams and letting the world drown if needed. In fiction Lancelot'sā Odysseus' and Heathcliff's actions are a lot more preferible#to me than Galahad'sā Agamemnon's and Edgar's. But yeah#I ALSO didn't want to go there because again it would have take me forever and I would run out of tags (yet here I am)#but there's also a Priam/Hector/Paris comparison in how they act and how they're regarded to be drawn here#Agamemnon/Iphigeniaā Priam/Hector/Parisā Odysseus/Telemachus. And that is not even including everything with Elektra/Clytemnestra/Orestes#or Oedipus and his own family for that matter#But yes. I'll better shut up already. Thinking about this scene and, sure, it's a reference to the line "a more civilized age" in the original trilogy but also I really fucking love it as a metaphor. The Jedi are known for using their lightsabers, the weapon that is nearly synonymous with them, the one that takes a lifetime of training and the kind of precision that can only come from someone using the Force, that a lightsaber is a constant reminder that a Jedi must have care with everything they do because of their abilities, the things they can do. There's a reason the story group commented that, almost any time a lightsaber ends up in the hands of non-trained Force-sensitives, it ends badly. Here you have the final fight of the clone wars, this is General Grievous, this is the end of this war that has dragged them all through hell for the last four years, Obi-Wan was specifically sent because, with Dooku dead, Grievous was the last one standing that could rally the Separatists, this was it, this was the end. This is how the Clone Wars ends--with a Jedi stripped of his precise, controlled weapon and grasping for a less than perfect solution because this needs to finally fucking be over, he needs to goddamned finish this. I love this as a metaphor for the Jedi's position in the war--if Obi-Wan doesn't grab that blaster, Grievous is going to hit him with that Electrostaff and he's going to die. His lightsaber is flat-out not an option. The Jedi's choices are whittled down to: Imperfect solution or die. So he chooses the imperfect solution because it's better than death, it's better than letting Grievous go, and there's still so much to be salvaged from this. He doesn't use his Jedi weapon, but it's not like he's suddenly no longer a Jedi because of it, he will still be a Jedi at heart and will still go back to doing his best to hold up their ideals. This is why Lucas says, "Are [the Jedi] going to stick with their moral rules and all be killed, which makes it irrelevant, or do they help save the Republic?ā (Star Wars Archives 1999-2005) I like this moment as a metaphor because I see it as illustrating the point of the Jedi's involvement in the war: It's not perfectly the Jedi way, it's them stripped of their preferred methods, but the heart of the reasoning is the same, that if they don't fight, if they don't take the less shitty option, then everyone dies. Obi-Wan ending the war with a blaster rather than a lightsaber, because it was either that or die, is a fun callback to the OT, but also shows the two paths placed in front of them, the lack of options available, and just what exactly was on the line.

Love is Stored in the Cat: A Nepeta Leijon Character Study
I guess these are a series now! I also have a request for Feferi in my inbox that I'll get around to eventually.
SO! Dear, sweet Nepeta.
Nepeta is the troll that is most against the existence of the hemocaste.
I believe the Ultimate Self speech was originally going to be from her, not Davepetasprite^2.
She's bad at shipping.
These all make her extremely impurrtant!!!
So furst of all, I'm going to start with the same disclaimer as my Eridan essay (go read that first!!! It sets up a lot of ideas that I'm expanding on here), which is that the things Hussie says are going to be lowered in value, because he likes to play coy about plot stuff. I'm also not counting anything but the actual text as canon, and even with in that text, I'm counting everything after GAME OVER as soft canon - a suggestion of what would have been, often truncated for time, often a deliberate middle finger to the shitty fandom.
Okay, so with that squared away!
Nepeta Says Fuck The Hemocaste
I'm not going to bother doing a deep dive on Nepeta's characterization, because fur the most part, I think the fandom more or less gets her right - she wears her heart (h33h33) on her sl33ve, after all! She's a very sweet little catgirl who loves roleplay and shipping, who is also a vicious hunter of wild beasts and lives in a cave. She's very nice and friendly, but has a tough streak and a spine.
She also says fuck the hemocaste, why does that even exist:
CT: D --> Your fraternization with the base classes have 100sened your morals, can't you see this AC: :33 < no! i dont care, they are fun AC: :33 < and i dont know anything about classes or bases or blood color, it doesn't matter! AC: :33 < what does gr33n blood even mean! it doesnt mean anything to me and it shouldnt mean anything to anyone else!
This is a radical stance not outright shared by any of the other trolls. Aradia calls highbloods "hateful sn0bs" that she and Tavros shouldn't have "ever had anything t0 d0 with", the highbloods are, of course, all casteist to varying degrees, and even Karkat seems fairly accepting of the class divide, at one point taunting Vriska that her rejection from the blue team is "ANOTHER INFURIATING VICTORY FOR GUTTER BLOOD OVER ARISTOCRACY". Not to mention his long-held dream of becoming a threshecutioner.
Even Feferi, despite saying to Eridan that "W-E AR-E NOT B-ETT-ER T)(AN ANYBODY!!!!!", is actually perfectly comfortable with the caste system's existence, comparing having to stop using her royal typing quirk to "peasant-IFICATING" herself - and let's not forget that a Beforus under her rule had its caste system 100% intact.
This means that Nepeta is the ONLY troll who has said, in no uncertain terms, that the caste system should not exist. It's stupid, it's bad, and it doesn't meowtter!
AND SHE'S RIGHT.
But she's never able to fully express this opinion, which brings us to:
A COMPLICKATED RELATIONSHIP WITH EQUIUS
Now, before I say anything, I must insist that I do believe these two work as good moirails. That does not, however, stop them from being 13, and therefore, being poor to each other the way 13-year-olds sometimes are. I don't think they should break up; I think they should re-examine certain dynamics, and I think they need some space to breathe apart from each other.
Equius has a lot of problems, which I won't get into overmuch here, because... that's a whole essay on its own (are you people seeing a trend yet). But with regards to Nepeta specifically, he's extremely controlling and protective, to the point where she's a little scared of him before the game begins:
AC: :33 < well it does sound like it will be a lot of fun but i think i should get purrmission first GC: BL4R!!!!! GC: TH4TS SO STUP1D GC: H3S NOT TH3 BOSS OF YOU AC: :33 < i know! AC: :33 < but still im kind of scared of him and i think purrhaps its best to just run it by him first so there isnt a kerfuffle about it or anything
She's also afraid to tell him about her crush on Karkat, since she knows he doesn't like Karkat:
AC: :33 < well AC: :33 < i have never told anybody this not even my moirail AC: :33 < heh, actually hes the LAST guy i might tell, he so wouldnt appurrve X33 AC: :33 < but yes i have liked somebody for quite some time, but alas he doesnt know it
By the time they end their game, she's gotten over this fear, seeing as she spends many hours curled up with Equius in a pile of robotics parts, but it still must be noted that they have some issues in their relationship that were never resolved, primarily on Equius's end. What this means for Nepeta, however, is that in addition to setting her up as the most outright anti-classism troll, the comic sets her up to be socially isolated due to her moirail's paranoia about letting her associate with both lowbloods (seeing them as bad influences) OR other highbloods, seeing them as dangerous.
He's not entirely wrong - his refusal to allow her to participate in FLARP kept her from winding up entangled in the horrible chain of revenge, as Tavros alludes:
AT: iT'S PROBABLY FOR THE BEST, AT: tHAT YOU LISTEN TO HIM, AC: :33 < i dont know AC: :33 < you think so? AT: wELL, AT: iF YOU DIDN'T LISTEN TO HIM BEFORE, AT: yOU MIGHT HAVE PLAYED GAMES WITH US BEFORE, AT: aND SOMETHING BAD MIGHT HAVE HAPPENED TO YOU, AC: :33 < hmm purrhaps
But he's still wrong. And it's probably an uncontrolled manifestation of his Heir of Void abilities - he's both consciously and unconsciously hiding her from other people.
This isn't to say she doesn't stand up for herself! Many of her discussions with Equius are pseudo-arguments, and she does get her way often enough, managing to get him to roleplay with her, and managing to get him back in the roboti% pile to talk about his feelings about Aradia. She also talks to the humans explicitly against Equius's orders, although she's keeping it a sneakret from him:
NEPETA: :33 < but equius already furbid me from doing that :(( NEPETA: :33 < not that i am listening to him, but shhhhh! :33 KARKAT: WAIT, HE DID? KARKAT: OK, THEN AS YOUR LEADER I ORDER YOU TO RP WITH THEM AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE. BE AS OBNOXIOUS ABOUT IT AS YOU CAN. NEPETA: :33 < yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay!
But the fact that she has to tiptoe around him like this speaks to them having issues in their relationship that go unexamined and unresolved, especially since it's clear that Nepeta really would like to be friends with more people, were Equius not getting in her way. So, even though I do think they are good moirails for each other - they clearly genuinely, deeply care about one another. But they could use some relationship counselling.
In fact, Jasprosesprite^2 outright calls her lonely:
JASPROSESPRITE^2: Or the girl who likes ships! Cause they made her less lonely. ;3
So, she's anti-hemocaste and lonely, two character traits that were set up and never resolved. And beclaws this is Nepeta, in her honor, I'm going to talk about a third:
Her Unrequited Crush On Karcat
She has the BIGGEST flushed crush on Karkat. It's seen on her shipping wall twice, once with the word OTP on it.
And, despite never discussing it with her moirail, Nepeta mentions it once to Jaspersprite, and once to Jasprosesprite^2.
Now, I'm not really here to debate on the validity of KatNep - I think it's fine, even if I don't personally ship it, and don't personally think it would work out (there are lots of indications that they wouldn't work out, including Jasprosesprite^2 outright saying so). However, her crush on Karkat is both complicated and creates some interesting setups for her character. I am going to discuss it fairly critically either way, so KatNep shippers have been warned.
A lot of her feelings about Karkat - and about shipping in general - wind up being heavily interlinked with her status as a Hero of Heart, so I'm going to expand on it more there. But what I will note in this section is the fact that, despite Nepeta insisting twice that she doesn't think Karkat knows about her crush on her:

He tooootally did:
KARKAT: OK, BUT TO BE FAIR, I'M PRETTY SURE SHE'S STILL OBSESSED WITH ME. KARKAT: IT'S A VERY UNFORTUNATE, VERY RED AND VERY UNREQUITED SITUATION I'VE BEEN TRYING TO TIPTOE AROUND FOR A LONG TIME, OK?
Interpret that how you will for shipping purposes, but I want to propose that this is a reflection of their statuses as Heart and Blood players. Heart, despite its players' obsessions with romance, is not the romance aspect, Blood is. Karkat displays this very same romantic acumen when he tells Dave that he's known Terezi and Gamzee were a thing for a long time, despite everyone else on the meteor trying to keep it a secret from him. Heart is, instead, about identity, feelings, motivations, souls, and self. In other words:
Nepeta Is Kind Of Bad At Shipping
Let's take a look at those shipping walls.
Let's break this down a little. Nepeta's ships are not entirely wrong, but even the successful ones are kind of wrong. Here's what I mean. We've already discussed how Equius and Nepeta's moirallegiance has some... issues in it. If we go down her list of ships that actually do happen, most of them have some issues in them!
Aradia expresses her regret for getting together with Equius in the Ministrife. Kanaya and Rose suffer some major relationship problems when Rose starts drinking, to the point Karkat feels a need to step in as an auspice. Karkat and Gamzee fail, as Karkat is not calmed by Gamzee, and Gamzee stops listening to Karkat. And while Sollux and Feferi seem to be fairly healthy, after they both wind up in the Furthest Ring, he's pretty much always next to Aradia - he and Feferi don't even get to exchange words with each other once they're in the Furthest Ring. Purrsonally, I think he and Feferi are meant to end up as moirails, but shhhh.
So what's happening here? Well, this goes back to her identity as a Heart player. Heart is concerned with feelings and motivations.
They simply want to understand the one thing we all are stuck with for our entire lives, i.e. our own minds. Forging an identity is extremely important to the Heart-bound, and every decision and action goes toward building a coherent narrative of their own story. That isn't to say Heart-bound don't care deeply for their friends and allies; they just have a tendency to assume that everyone is as concerned with identity as they are.
Nepeta's shipping has also been associated with her isolation and loneliness. When you put this together, it implies that Nepeta's shipping is about her desire to understand others, and much of her ships are based on one of the parties having feelings, regardless of compatibility, feasibility, or broader implications. After all, despite the fact that she has pretty terrible romantic acumen, she IS able to instinctively identify that Eridan's advances toward her were insincere:
NEPETASPRITE: :33 < well ok i guess eridan hit on me a few times NEPETASPRITE: :33 < but his advances always struck me as cr33py and insincere
And that Karkat secretly LOVES and RESPECTS his friends:
JASPROSESPRITE^2: On the contrary Nepeta. You deserve someone who will RESPECT and ADORE you. NEPETASPRITE: :33 < well... yes NEPETASPRITE: :33 < i always hoped to find someone like that some day NEPETASPRITE: :33 < i dunno maybe youre right but in spite of whatever problems he might have i always felt like i saw something in him that made me think he could be that purrson!
Or knowing that Equius loves to play games, and still feels sad about Aradia exploding:
AC: :33 < i s33 right through your stupid act, who are you trying to kid! AC: :33 < look how you go out of your way to use words that have x's in them so that you can use your silly purrcent signs AC: :33 < or use these absurd words that you can shoehorn a '100' into, even if its not strictly replacing 'loo'!!! AC: :33 < you are so transpurrent AC: :33 < i can tell you like to play games, d33p down you are a guy who likes to play games! AC: :33 < i can smell a guy who likes to play games from so fur away with this nose, you have no idea X33
NEPETA: :33 < she was so happy, just like she used to be, and she said she would s33 you soon! EQUIUS: D --> That's a nice thought, and thank you for sharing it EQUIUS: D --> But it was only a dream, and will surely have no consequence in reality NEPETA: :33 < equius? NEPETA: :33 < are those f33lings i an detecting with my wiggly whiskery nose? EQUIUS: D --> Maybe
Because feelings, and not relationships, are her actual domain.
And speaking of Heart powers...
Nepeta and the Ultimate Self
So from this point forward, I'm going to assume you're more or less agreeing with my take that at some point after Game Over, Hussie - for whatever reason - gave up on his original ending, and wound up truncating his ideas so he could finish the comic faster. I go more into detail about that here.
So, in this hypothetical original ending, I firmly believe that the speech about the Ultimate Self would have come from Nepeta. First, let's take a look at what the "Ultimate Self" entails, as it appears within the comic:
DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < everything that ever happens to every version of you is an important part of your ultimate self... like a superceding bodyless and timeless persona that crosses the boundaries of paradox space and unlike god tiers or bubble ghosts or whatever, it really IS immortal DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < but in your physical form there are all these partitions in your mind that prevent you from remembering any of that which makes your existence f33l totally linear DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < which is probably for the best! DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < in a regular body s33ing all that would be too overwhelming ... DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < and after it sinks in for a while you start coming to this understanding of a greater self DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < maybe i "got it" quicker though because of the two people i was and their aspects DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < understanding heart is all about the nuances of a distributed self DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < nepeta never got to make much headway with her aspect but shes finally gettin the chance DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < the time aspect is all about running into different versions of yourself so you kinda get confronted with it in a really literal way that can be disturbing DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < obviously davesprite stuggled with that too, but now its fine DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < hes fr33 from worrying about it all and what it means for his place in reality DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < because he can s33 now all his selves have relevance in painting the full picture of who he truly is DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < im not COMPLETELY sure because im not like some sort of ASPECT MASTER but DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < my avian slash feline intuition tells me that all roads will lead you here eventually DAVEPETASPRITE^2: B33 < gaining the d33pest possible understanding of any aspect will bring you to the same final conclusion about your ultimate self
Now, I believe - and I hope you'll agree - that it's kind of lame, narratively, for Davesprite to have been set up with so much angst about not being the "real Dave," and for Nepeta to have all her issues with loneliness and shyness, and for these two specific iterations of each other to have never interacted, but suddenly getting double-prototyped fixes all of their problems, and they achieve Ultimate Selfhood despite being two total strangers to each other. So let's instead break down the more salient points about what Ultimate Selfhood entails, divorced from the fact that it's Davepetasprite^2 doing the narrating:
Every player in the game possesses an "Ultimate Self," an ultimate culmination of all their experiences and memories, specifically referred to as a "persona"
Normally, people are not aware of this, because it would be too overwhelming to deal with so many memories and iterations of each other.
Everyone will achieve Ultimate Selfhood eventually as the final culmination of their understanding of their aspect.
Heart is all about the nuances of a distributed self.
Let's talk about that last one some more, and by that I mean, let's see what Calliope has to say about it:
TT: I don't know why it had to be this way for me. Juggling these two waking selves at once. TT: I guess I'm used to it, but it still makes for a pretty intense existence. TT: Do you even know what the deal with that is? Like is there any precedent in your readings? UU: i don't know aboUt precedent, bUt it makes plenty of sense to me as the type of path one might expect for a hero of heart. UU: a path rUled by the heart aspect can be a joUrney of splintered self. UU: that is, the player's being may exhibit the same kind of fragmentation which certain classes coUld caUse in others. UU: i think this is what has triggered yoUr dUal-awareness between waking and dream selves, thoUgh it woUld not sUrprise me if the symptoms manifested in even more ways than this.
Now, Dirk has a clawmplicated relationship with his alternate selves, given that he's a Prince, but Nepeta wouldn't have the same struggles, or at least, not to the same degree. The problem is, hampered by Equius and her own shyness about discussing her thoughts and feelings with others:
NEPETASPRITE: :33 < i get so shy and worried what people might think of me if i say how i f33l NEPETASPRITE: :33 < im always so scared that they wont f33l the same way or just think im stupid or pathetic or something
She never actually gets to explore this part of herself.
But What If... She Did?
The way I imagine the original ending going is that each troll that gets saved by John's interference in the timeline then asks John to help them fix their own mistakes, thereby saving somebody else. Each successive trip through the meteor brings new character development, and also riddles the comic with progressively more password pages, which I think would be really funny. And throughout all this the Game Over team is searching for Vriska, Meenah, and the treasure, and resolving their arcs that way, so it's not like they would be replaced - they're the ones who get to kill LE. The process, in my mind, goes like this:
Terezi asks John to save Vriska, and prevent her from getting too spades with Gamzee, as these are her two greatest regrets.
Vriska obviously had great regrets about killing Tavros, both pre- and post-retcon, so she asks for his death to be prevented.
Tavros staying alive means that he and Gamzee wind up hashing out some stuff - Gamzee mentions that he feels "So aT ChIlL WiTh yOu" while talking to Tavros, and Tavros reciprocates the friendship and also - interestingly - acknowledges Gamzee's religion, calling it beautiful even if he doesn't necessarily believe in it. This is interesting because Karkat's inability to do so is explicitly one of the reasons their moirallegiance broke down. So having Tavros back, alive, means that he and Gamzee would likely end up in some sort of relationship, probably pale despite flushed leanings, and would bring Gamzee back into the fold.
Gamzee would then be like, yeah, wow, that time I killed Nepeta and Equius was pretty bad, huh? Especially since his decision to hang onto his friends' bodies and prototype them is often interpreted as him genuinely feeling bad about his dead friends (he tells Kurloz to shut up when Kurloz mentions all the dead friends, and his religion seems to be about a paradise he wants to share with his friends anyway). So he'd ask John to prevent him from killing them, resulting in the two of them getting to live.
Things get much more hypothetical from here, since so much of the character dynamics would have changed, but I think by this point, Equius might command ask John to let him say goodbye to Aradiabot before she explodes, which he expresses feeling very sad about. However, in doing so, John and Aradiabot end up in the same room, and when she realizes that he has the ability to change the timeline without repercussions, she'd seize him by the arm and demand that he take her back in time, to before she died. After all, she expresses regrets about her reckless actions, and how she always felt like it was all one big setup.
She would take Aradia's place in the Vriska revenge chain, being once more freed of her robot chassis, and from there, would trick Doc Scratch and the Handmaiden into thinking everything was still going according to their designs. Meanwhile, Alive!Aradia would be hanging out at Equius's place, borrowing his void powers to avoid notice, coordinating a new timeline that keeps the beats of the original (too much deviation causes unpredictability, and an paradox'd timeline offshoot without John's direct interference would still become doomed), but allows them greater freedom and the ability to overcome the machinations of Doc Scratch and associates.
This would also prevent Sollux from becoming so self-loathing, since it's no longer "his fault" that Aradia dies, although he winds up in that hole again after Feferi gets killed. Now that his Aradia is alive, he wouldn't feel like he might as well stay in the bubbles because his closest companions are there, so he'd make it to the end, and would ask John to prevent Feferi's death.
Eridan still dies; he's so disconnected and isolated from all his friends that his course of actions is largely unaffected even by everybody else's timeline tweaks. But before Feferi can suggest bringing him back, Karkat would butt in.
The Friendship Troll should be the one to demand that ALL of their friends be revived, especially if they had everyone except only one guy, and Karkat and Eridan are heavily implied to be moirails anyway. The course of Karkat's fixes are so comprehensive, and primarily romance-based, that the end result of this final loop is everybody not only being alive, but god-tiered, with appropriate character development.
Now, where Nepeta's Heart powers would play into all of this is that she would start to notice something going on. After all, Heart players are sensitive to their splintered selves, and (Nepeta) is probably much closer to Nepeta than regular doomed timeline offshoots. As the loops continue, and Nepeta has more and more time to talk to people, and meets her dead alternate selves, and even meets (Nepeta), she starts to awaken to her Ultimate Self - to come into possession of alternate memories.
And if the Ultimate Self is a very soul-y kind of concept, such that Heart players have a natural advantage in coming to understand it, then isn't it a natural fit that a Rogue of Heart - one who steals from Heart or steals Heart for others - would be naturally inclined to share the wisdom of her alternate selves, and even the very concept of the Ultimate Self, with her friends?
Because the Ultimate Self is actually, in my opinion, a pretty good narrative device. It turns the sadness of the dead and doomed timelines into something littersweet instead, and makes it so any weirdness regarding time travel and not really knowing your friends anymore will eventually be resolved, even if off-screen.
It's not really narratively satisfying when Davepetasprite^2 suddenly comes into being and reaches enlightenment, but imagine if instead it's a post-character development Nepeta comforting Davesprite on his relevance, or Jade on her loneliness, or John on not really knowing these new post-retcon versions of his friends? It would feel a lot better, since in this hypothetical, she would have reached that point after on-screen character development. Being able to share her true self with her friends on the meteor - by necessity, since what else are they going to be doing for three years - leads to her finally being able to fulfill her role as a Rogue of Heart.
Also, at some point during these repeated meteor trips, she dates Karkat (whether that's successful or not, I'll leave to reader interpretation - you already know where I stand), fulfilling Jaspersprite's musing that she might only be able to date Karkat after she dies.
So that's two out of thr33 of her outstanding plot hooks resolved... okay. So, I try not to make these essays into ship propaganda, but hear me out:
Hate Is Stored In The FefNep
Okay, so, remember that thing about how Feferi is actually a huge casteist hypocrite? Well, let's also note that the comic, post-Murderstuck, seems to put Nepeta and Feferi together a lot - they're a Commodore and Rear Admiral in the ghost pirate army, respectively, and they also wind up as Fefetasprite. So I think it's not entirely out of left field to say that these two were implied to have SOMETHING going on.
And that something... is a difference in political views.
I mean, let's be real, there's a reason Fefetasprite is the most explode-prone after Tavrisprite. Miss "The Hemocaste is Stupid and Shouldn't Matter" vs. Miss "I Love Being A Princess And Call Jade Hornless and Finless (Derogatory)"? Come on, tell me you don't see it.
Without getting too much into Feferi, this hypocrisy, and unwillingness to check her privilege (so glad I found an excuse to use that term unironically), are probably her greatest character flaws - ie, the things you would expect the story to address about her. Meanwhile, one of Nepeta's flaws, which she laments to Jasproseprite^2, is that she feels too shy to talk about her feelings to other people, leading to her having never expressed her views on the hemocaste to anyone but Equius.
I think that they initially think they'd be friends. Each one of them would go "oh man, this other girl is soooo cute, I wish I could talk to her more often!"
And then, once they do, they realize they fucking hate each other. Nepeta would go "X00 < you are such a hypocrite who f33ls like youre better than all of us!!!" and Feferi would go "You're suc)( an uneducated glubbing P-EASANT! 3X0" and then they'd claw each others' eyes out. It would be so funny, and if a homestuck ship isn't extremely fucking funny, then why are we even here.
But more importantly, this would further them along into resolving each others' arcs - Feferi would be forced to grapple with the greater implications of classism, and Nepeta - who is shown having a spine the most in defiance of somebody else - would grow more aggressive about being open about her feelings in defiance of Feferi. Even Equius would get roped into it in a positive way - you can just imagine him going "D --> Can I really believe my auricular sponge clots D --> Nepeta, you are finally taking interest in politi%" and be 100% on board with teaching her so Feferi won't be able to call her uneducated.
And then for flushed, I dunno! Karkat's an option, and Jade and Jake also both love the fuck out of furries, and Tavros seems nice. But yeah I'll die on the fefnep hate ship. Guys it would be so funny.

Regulus had never had āChristmasesā. Yes, Walburga and Orion hosted stuffy dinners and parties and āWhite Elephantās for every rich and powerful family they knew, but come Christmas day and neither he nor Sirius would get presents, or family-time (not that they wanted that), or anything of the sort. Sirius would always bitch about it loudly.
āI want a real Christmas! Not stuffy robes and shitty rich-people foods,ā heād grumble, earning a backhand across the face from their mother. Sheād refuse to leave any visible marks on them, lest it āruin their reputationā, but it hurt well enough as is.
Regulus, on the other hand, would treat Christmas as a normal day. He pretended he didnāt care, earning quiet outrage from Sirius in private (āHow do you not care, Reggie?ā āDonāt call me Reggie.ā āBut how can you just sit there and take it?ā), and indifference from their parents. Much to his pleasure, as any attention from Sirius was good attention to Regulus, and no attention from Walburga and Orion was much much better than negative attention. So even if he had to endure shitty āholidaysā (they canāt even be called that in that household), at least he wasnāt getting hurt.
So when their mother allowed them the opportunity to stay at Hogwarts for the hols one year, his heart leapt to his throat and he almost screamed.
āOh my god. Maman is letting us stay for Christmas,ā he whispers disbelievingly, passing the letter over to Sirius, who gasps excessively loudly. James almost instantly pipes up.
āWe all have to stay now. We must throw a party of sorts, or at least celebrate together.ā
āOoh, yes, good idea. We can have, like, a week-long sleepover,ā Sirius says with wide eyes. Regulus turns a little more stoic, a lump forming in his throat as he realizes that Sirius would rather be with his friends over him.
āOh, yeah, great, cool, have fun,ā he mumbles unenthusiastically.
āYouāre coming with us, I hope you know that youāre coming with us,ā James says amusedly.
āGreat, spending Christmas with my brother and his little friends. Peak holidays right here,ā Regulus says sarcastically, a warmth seeping through his chest as the prospect.
āI mean if you donāt want to, you donāt have to co-ā James starts before getting cut off.
āNo, Iāll come. I meanā¦ yeah sure, Iāll be there,ā Regulus says with a faint blush. Remus and Sirius both looked equally as confused, as Regulus never quite showed any sort of fluster or emotion. James could always pull that out of him -- he always seemed good at things like that.
āGreat, good, meet in our common room at midnight? The password is collywobble.ā
Soon came 11:50, and Regulus tentatively ventured out. Heād been exploring the castle at night since his very first night at Hogwarts, but this was different. He was meeting his brotherās best friend in forbidden territory: the Gryffindor common room. At 11.58, he whispered the password, quietly shut the door, and stood in the center of the room, looking around. James pads down the stairs softly, each step evidently his by the rhythm of his walking. Regulus quickly sits on the couch, wanting to look less tense than he actually is.
āOh hey Reggie, youāre early,ā his voice comes flowing smoothly from the doorway.
āI left early,ā he shrugs indifferently, firmly ignoring the way his face heats up at Jamesā very presence.
āMakes sense. So weāll be sleeping in here. Sirius refuses to share a room with his brother forā¦ obvious reasons concerning him and Remus, and I wouldnāt want you to be all alone,ā James says, grabbing a few blankets and pillows and setting up sleeping arrangements on a couch for the two of them to share.
āWait wait wait- weāre sharing a bed? Or, couch I should say?ā Regulus asks incredulously, heart pounding in his chest so much heās shocked James canāt hear it.
āOh, yeah I mean none of the other couches or armchairs are as comfy to sleep on, and they cause serious back pain in the morning, so I figured itād be better to just share. Plus we can keep each other warm since itās below freezing,ā James says awkwardly, wringing his hands as if heās scared Regulus will refuse.
āI mean, I guess that makes sense,ā Regulus agrees, seemingly hesitant but inside heās screaming excitedly.
āOkay, as long as you arenāt uncomfortable,ā James says was a warm smile, handing Regulus a pair of his pajama pants and a comfy quidditch hoodie to change into, showing him to the bathroom to change.
The second the door shuts, Regulus silently screams, instantly changing and taking in the scent of the clothes. Gods Iām so whipped Regulus thinks helplessly, stepping out after fixing himself slightly.
James was sitting on the couch with a book, seemingly waiting for Regulus to join him. He hesitantly lies next to him, curled into Jamesā chest instinctively, as the couch was quite small.
His eyes flutter shut serenely, thankful for James inviting him to this as he dozes off, only very faintly aware of James pressing a kiss to the top of his head before falling asleep with Regulus tucked into his arms under the blankets so very peacefully.

thinks about teru again. heās so funny and tragic to me. like. ok so he got targeted by a psychic terrorist organization that sent adults to try and kidnap him at a young age. and he rationalizes it by going āi am the Protagonist this is happening because i am the Main Characterā and then lives his life by that idea bc itās that or face the fact that heās nothing, that heās an average person and all these things happened to him for no reason. and then he meets mob and wants to befriend him, has questions he wants to ask- here is someone who might finally understand him. and then bc teru is thinking like a Main Character i think he goes āok so if i defeat him then weāre friends otherwise weāre rivalsā bc heās still going off of tropes and cliches. and then shigeo fucking curbstomps him and he goes āoh ok i get it im not the main character š KAGEYAMAās the main character. so i must be The Rival Character thenā but itās just a way he can act as a friend without breaking the tropes he uses to rationalize his trauma
YEAH YOU GET IT! YOU UNDERSTAND! He's so horribly lonely but also literally everything about his mindset is directly standing in the way of giving him any connection. He holds people to such high standards that they're always going to disappoint him, so he spends time with none of them. He craves constant approval and affection but none of it is enough to satisfy the need for actual connection. So he just goes through shallow relationship after shallow relationship going Yep. This is great. I am happy. And I genuinely think he doesn't realize he's NOT happy because like. When you're in a shitty situation for your entire life you don't necessarily realize things can be Better. So Teru is not captured by claw when other people are, and he can do things that other people can't, so his situation is better than most! Nevermind the fact hey maybe there shouldn't be Claw. Maybe people shouldn't be attacking random kids. Maybe this is all insane. He's just like. Wow I'm so strong and smart for evading claw, because the idea that he just was Lucky would be terrifying and take away his entire sense of safety. He needs to be the smartest toughest guy that Has Ever Existedā¢ because if he's not, then suddenly he could get captured or die at any moment. And that's suddenly way less haha my life is so cool! The denial juice is strong here.
Literally everything about his introduction episodes is so damn telling. He tells the body improvement club everyone always underestimates him. But he conveniently leaves out how this makes him feel, or if he's offended. We see him lose his shit when Mob says he isn't able to hurt him, so clearly he's far more affected by it than he wants to admit. But he can't be upset by it. It's an Advantage in this Battle he's in. No one takes him seriously, and that means he can get away with more shit, and that means it's easier to beat them in battle! Nevermind the fact that he works his ass off, he is not upset at all, because that would be ridiculous. It's an Advantage. He wraps literally everything in his life that hurts him up in a bow of "Actually, this is good." He cannot admit that anything about him or his life is bad. He cannot admit that he isn't perfect, or that his life isn't just a fun challenge, or that he maybe misses his parents a little bit. He like...just fully submerges himself in the idea of being a character so he doesn't have to realize how easily he could die or have his life ruined. If his parents stop sending him money, he's fucked. If claw beats him, he's fucked. He doesn't have actual connections with people, because he views them too lowly to let them in at all, and he is fucking himself over so hard with it. He needs this to not be terrifying. And he also needs to be in the right, I think. I mean, he treats all of the fights at school like a game. It feeds his ego and it means he's safe. People can't touch him and it feels good to take out his anger (he's just angry that they disrespect him, he has nothing else whatsoever to have unresolved anger about, he is completely fine and is just enjoying being able to wipe that smug smile off that assholes face. He is so okay and well adjusted!) He's just. A mess of weird ass coping mechanisms. If he isn't right, which he definitely is!, suddenly he isn't the main character, suddenly he's not just Doing Whatever, suddenly he's just another asshole. Y'know. Do I make sense. He needs to be right because if he's not right it goes from a fun game to he was just an asshole for no reason and he didn't actually gain anything at all.
God. I need to rewatch EP five, because it's insane and also tells you so much about Teru, I'm sure it's even better on a rewatch. I need to rewatch this show soon or I'll die. But like. God. He takes the idea of the only other natural esper his age he's ever met being different than him SO personally. Because he's right. He is doing everything exactly the way he is supposed to. Clearly this guy is an idiot and weak. That's why he's afraid to fight him. Clearly. He can't comprehend that maybe Mob just straight up doesn't want to hurt him. Mob thinks he's better than him. Mob needs to be taken down a peg. And then he can't hurt Mob. Then he can't break his fucking barrier. Hes fought espers before. He knows how to fight espers. He is perfectly capable of it. He has literally everything he needs to beat him and for the first time he very suddenly Can't. And this person is so different and is treating him like he's having a temper tantrum and isn't following his rules that he's formed his entire life around. Can I interest you in autistic Teru. Can I please interest you in the fact Teru has autism. Please ma'am I just want a minute of your time.
I also feel like. The fact he Needed to idolize Mob is very telling. Mob defeated him so CLEARLY he's so powerful and perfect and amazing. He still can't let go of Being Amazing, of the idea he can't fail for no good reason. He needs Mob to be special or else he means nothing. Or else he's worthless. He needs to mean something. His entire identity is hinged around Mob now which. No pressure. He needs Mob to be perfect or else he's worth Nothing. So he puts him on a huge pedestal so he doesn't have to do any reflecting and now he can have the added bonus of a friend and it's Fine! It is totally fine. He is not affected by the fact he almost killed a man on accident. He is not affected by the fact he may have severely injured several people. He is not affected by the fact Mob could've killed him. He is not affected by the fact he was wrong. None of this affects him at all. He is So Fine.
And then he switched the narrative around to haha I was the one who needed to be taken down a peg. This is fine. My world view is not in shambles. I don't need to reassess anything. Everything that happened to me is still cool and fine and I still matter because I'm in the main characters life. So it's fine. He goes from nothing matters except Me to nothing matters except Kageyama, but at first he's done absolutely zero reconfiguring.
Also like. He romanticized that fight so much. Can we please talk about that. God. Hi. This fucking kid. Someone please like. Get him a therapist and maybe a Capri Sun.
I'm too tired to write more right now and think I should probably go ahead and post but like. Yeah. God. This show. Teru makes way too much damn sense. I want to shake him. What is his problem (just spent several paragraphs analyzing his problem.)

Oohhh a French speaking AFTG fan!
Can I ask whatās the general opinion on the Marseille accent? What do Canadians think of it? Is it fancy? Or rough?
ouhh what a question anon! i'm tagging @givemethedamnflowers so she can help me out too if u want to <3
also i don't speak for all Franco Canadians / QuƩbƩcois. fiy. ya know.
as a QuƩbƩcoise first and foremost (Canadian comes 2nd in how i view my identity), and as someone WHO HAS A MOREAU FROM MARSEILLES in my close family, i love the accent. to me it's somehow much less grating than the Parisian accent (not the international French accent, that one's ok) despite being much more pronounced and how do you say... quirky? not weird, but like it's definitely peculiar. special! i like it a lot. it also makes me love Jean Moreau even more because it adds character, an edge, another area of fondness. i personally think it's very easy to spot, but contrary to the north of France, it's easier to understand.
i would say the most northern accents are much rougher, more difficult to understand than Marseilles or Paris, also because of the disparity in colloquialisms and regional expressions. but i do love them so. Bourgogne?? Normandie?? oh how lovely. and then down down down down south, neighbor to Marseilles, l'Occitanie (a fave)!!! oh and la Corse!!! so so beautiful to me. music to my ears. maybe bc, as QuĆ©bĆ©coise, like i said, i feel a little kinship with those regions' accents, bc the Paris/Ćle-de-France spit upon our accents as shitty, ridiculous, "not real French" or generally make fun of us, like we're somehow less smart bc of the way we pronounce things and speak with our accent. in my experience! and trust me, i've had a lottttttt of 'em. so the little scene where Jean keeps being annoyed by Thea calling him 'Paris' when he's from Marseilles? ACCURATE & GOLDEN! made me smile.
that being said, as it has been discussed many many times in the fandom, characters like Neil, Kevin and Jean, and even Andrew and Nicky, have such wild backgrounds, with how much they move around geographically + their mixed heritage, that all of them must have unique accents you can't really pin down. Jean left Marseilles at 14, was homeschooled, then forced to learn Japanese then English, in West Virginia, from native Japanese speakers. he doesn't have the Marseilles slang, the refs; his French is stuck at that level and it can't progress, and he also probably loses a lot of it, breaking down over time. finding his words must be a a nightmare. imagine trying to translate a word that isn't even considered French nor translatable outside of Marseilles' region!!! also, how old were his parents? what generation of slang has he picked up by default? or was he, sadly, taught international French?
SO MANY QUESTIONS! UGH! aftg & languages, French specifically, give me a headache (and heartache) every time.
i would say, watch films and series! please! from every part of the Francophonie around the world! Belgium, Louisiana Cajun, Acadia, QuƩbec, Marseilles, Niger... it's a beautiful language, despite his devastating shameful hand in colonization and racism. the way the people forced to learn and speak it to survive have all found ways to make it theirs in infinite ways that help the language evolve and become richer. French is as much theirs now, if not more. French is much more that than the Republic. French is not Paris.

I know some of y'all are devastated about Buck and Tommy breaking up. Still, Tim, Oliver, and Lou have all been harping on it being "fresh and new" since they started talking about the season, which is why I have been holding off on throwing it all down for the ship because, yes, I DID want a place to talk about whatever was going on between them without getting bashed for it. It took me a WHILE to find that, and I don't plan to just leave those spaces because it ended.
Still, this relationship only existed for 13 episodes and was shown in less than half of those episodes. I didn't even understand why and how they were in a relationship until 8x05. I was prepared for that dinner to be their one- or two-month anniversary, not SIX, with the way Tim, Oliver, and Lou have played it in interviews, insisting they're still in the "honeymoon phase."
Six months is a long fucking time for a "honeymoon phase," which is why that reveal threw me so hard at the beginning of the episode. And for how long have we been saying Abby's ex was named Tommy since he showed up and kissed Buck? And then that's not even the reason they broke up. They had Josh give Buck a pep talk before they broke up. This episode was a shitshow, yes, but are you honestly really that surprised they had another Buck love interest do him dirty? And come to find out that Oliver wants Buck to get dirty?
I'm kind of pissed about how all of this went, yeah. Still, I can't imagine what it's like going through the character you've played for seven seasons being the goddamn scapegoat for the relationship-ending trauma nearly every single season, which makes the fans put your character on a pedestal and the one time you finally get to have your character screw up and cheat SINCE his life-changing relationship in season one, your character not only does not get to fall off the pedestal, it gets higher because he doesn't get a single bit of the blame from the fans. No, they're too busy trashing your character's love interests for what your character did to them, mainly because they're women.
Y'all can say, "Wow, that must be a breath of fresh air for Tracie to have Karen not be the unmoved, understanding wife and be petty for once," but say you're "betrayed" by Oliver wanting a piece of that same nuance for his character? I mean, unfollow and block him if you must, but fucking christ y'all, the man has to be tired of being the golden retriever. No wonder he fully leaped into this arc. Let him have some fun, and Buck get a little tarnished. He's made of solid gold. He's gonna still shine in the end.
No, I am not in any way condoning the biphobic implications of the shit Tommy said to him at the end. I can see why Lou didn't want it to end that way. It's an incredible disservice to the bisexual community, and I do take offense to that. But they can't erase that now. So fine. Let this new Buck break some hearts. There's nobody (except maybe Eddie) that can doom spiral like Buck can. He's going to be impulsive. and (for once) he's not looking for a relationship. And he even said in this episode, he kind of worshiped Tommy so as shitty as what Tommy said was, it's going to go to Buck's head and heart for sure.
The Daddy said "you're just gonna break my heart" to guy with Daddy Issues. Y'all keep calling Buck a brat. Maybe he is. And maybe we're about to see it on blast. That affection-starved man has never done anything half-measured in his life.

How to remake Harry Potter:
(A step by step guide)
Weāve already had one god-awful adaptation that way too many people think is good. This is our one chance to have the book characters represented correctly, along with the plot they support.
Iāve put YEARS of thought into this. Iāve written scripts for episodes of a hypothetical tv show. Iāve drawn concept art. Iāve done shit. So I figured Iād share my thoughts.
1. Stick to the books*.
Stick to the books has a massive asterisk next to it because I mean the plot and characters. Some stuff (as youāll see later) should be changed.
Nothing in this show should feel out of character. Harry should be closer with Ron than he is to Hermione. Snape should be a real d*ckhead. Hermione should be judgmental of those who donāt think like her, etc etc. The way these characters navigate their relationships is why the fandom is still relevant. Itās why canon-compliant fic is popular in the first place. We like their dynamics. SHOW THEM APPROPRIATELY.
Plot is a sticky thing because Iād say thereās wiggle room, but not too much. Certain characters have to die. Certain events must happen. You cant change that stuff.
2. Use the Medium.
Youāre using film as a format to tell your story. Ideally youād us animation, but I know Warner Bros has less creativity than Disneyās remake department, so I wonāt even try and pitch that.
Use colour and saturation. It can help contextualize emotion. It can make us subconsciously recognize things. For instance, the scene growing more saturated when Ron walks into the room when Hermione is wearing the horcrux, or any multitude of other uses this could bring.
Bring in costume design that (actually fits the world) but also helps show how that character is feeling. What theyāre thinking, their personality, their future, etc.
Make magic funā¢ļø. The books sort of sidelined magic in 5-7. Donāt do that. Divert from the books. Magic should feel alive. Colour-code them so we as an audience can recognize spells and what they might do before we see it. Implement sound design to make each spell unique and vibrant. Make this world subtly bursting with magic like it was in the first few books. Have it weave around characters, wrap them up. Be creative with action scenes. Force transfiguration into battle scenes. Choreograph your duels. Show donāt tell us that a wizard/witch is powerful. Turn people into portraits. Lock them up as mice. USE MAGIC.
Your set design should reflect this. Everything should be bursting with personality. Donāt just use the shitty movie sets. Inject some colour, have the surroundings aid you in telling the story. Get weird with the camera. Use these tools to their fullest potential.
Actually fucking try.
3. Utilize Music.
Music is justā¦ such a massive part of film. Itās frustrating how often even the best filmmakers overlook its use. Characters should have themes that mature and develop as the series goes on. Have action arrangements of the themes to play with heroic moments. As the series progresses, we grow attached to these themes. When they appear, the audience FEELS something. Donāt reuse great pieces to force emotion. (Dumbledoreās Farewell in The Princeās Tale. Are you fucking kidding me?)
For example: Have a theme for Neville that starts out timid and uses very shy instrumentals, but we first hear a change when he stands up to the trio at the end of PS. Then it gains more instruments until OotP, when it grows again. Once we get to DH, it can be used in this heroic swell as he chops the head off the snake in front of Voldemort and everyone watching. The audience, consciously or not, will feel that moment even more.
Have a theme for Ron and Hermione that might not even be romantic until HBP when it gains that element. PLAY WITH MUSIC.
Themes for mystery, adventure, loss, love, friendship, LOCATION. Let them come back throughout the series to highlight various moments. See Lord of the Rings and The Hunger Games, as well as (surprisingly) the Fantastic Beasts films.
Let music affect the visuals. Magic can bend and swivel with the music. Use it to tell the story. Use it to show emotion. Use it to progress a characterās arc. USE CONSISTENT MUSIC.
4 . Be Bold.
This is the big one and it may seem like Iām contradicting myself but Iām not. Rowlingās work hasnāt aged crazily well to modern fiction standards. This is your chance to rectify that. Fill plot holes, actually think through the politics. Introduce world-building elements that enhance the story/characters. (The house system, and how Slytherin fits in. The logic behind avada kedavra???) Get creative with solutions. Contradict the original work when it comes to description of location. If it doesnāt work for the film format, donāt force it to work here.
Spend more time with characters we know are relevant, but maybe not to the plot. These are your Ginny Weasleys, your Seamus and Deans, Nevilles, etc. Really fill them in. Give them more scenes. Ginny has two phenomenal arcs that play completely off-screen, explore them. Show us her friendship with Hermione. Show us her insecurities and her faults. Give us more of her and Harryās friendship. We know they get married, so maybe fix the whole āRowling wrote the epilogue first, but didnāt realize she was waiting too long to introduce these characters until HBPā.
Add scenes. Add jokes. Add smiles and covert looks. You have more time, which means you have a chance to focus on friendships, and romance, and world building.
Tell multiple storylines. Give Remus and Tonks a cool spy/thriller subplot interjected with the main story in OotP. Show us more of Fleur staying in England. Give us more of Harry and Sirius bonding. All of this stuff can fit loosely into canon, and be welcome creative additions.
BE BOLD.
And finally,
5. This is your chance to not only retell the story, but to do it better.
RECOGNIZE THIS. Take advantage of this opportunity and enhance canon, donāt fight it.
Donāt add Hermione and Harry dancing because *YOU* donāt like where the romantic pairings went. Donāt add Draco sympathy because you want him to have a redemption arc. Donāt dumb Ron down because you donāt like the fact that heās just like the teenage boys you dated in High School, and he was a bit immature.
Make changes, be bold, use music, stick to the books*, use the medium, but take this as the opportunity that it is to enhance what came before.

I adore adding a trope of inner wolf (think of inner monologue/their institutional primal side that's absolutely unhinged) makes me giggleā hear me out : they *try* to be nice and polite and a good alpha to the sweet little omega it's just... they smell so good and their wolf is just soooo hungry!!

The Heatwave series has three fics left to go - day 8 and 10 are half-written, and day 9 I'm kinda worried about but I'll get there when I get there skjfhglhdg.
I've gotten pretty distracted with this yandere fic ngl sdfkghlsdhg
But yeah!! Omegaverse stuff has been really fun to write for the most part. It helps that I've mixed it up a bit - beta reader, alpha reader, and omega reader. The final day is omega/omega and I'm really excited for that!
I'm glad you enjoy it so much! Sometimes I do look at the works and go "is this even really omegaverse" so it's nice to know I'm doing well on that front.
See, the "inner wolf" thing makes me think too much of werewolf stuff (which I don't necessarily hate but it's not the angle I'm going for). But I can achieve basically the same effect with like, "your omega instincts compel you", and I also really like how that can blend with the reader's internal monologue.
Like your omega instincts are telling you to jump on his knot, sure, but that's also just you wanting to jump on his knot. It feels less distant, more like an intrusive thought than a separate entity. I've enjoyed some stuff that had the "inner wolf" stuff going on, though! It can be great for breaking up the more stoic characters.
I am definitely all for characters going feral and wild with need. Is it?? Even LOVE? If it isn't driving them completely insane???
As for Gojo being a commitment-phobe - I do see it, and I do also see Gojo going so wild and impulsive that he accidentally ties himself into something he doesn't want.
Would be absolutely hilarious to see him fighting mate-withdrawal, alpha protector/provider instincts, etc. I think a lot of the appeal there would be him trying to walk back on the mating but not being able to, and then you're also in the picture bringing your own complicated feelings to the table and maybe throwing his shitty behavior in the face... so many fun ways to go about it.

After the main course, Paul went to the kitchen to get the dessert ready before midnight. I excused myself and said I needed some fresh air.
I had been to Del Sol Valley a few times when I was little, visiting my grandparents, but I didnāt remember much about the city itself.
The back of Paulās mansion was the only thing not surrounded by fences, and the view was both breathtaking and terrifying. Bright lights as far as the eye could see, occasional premature fireworks going off, faint background noise from traffic that never stopped.
It felt like we were gilded birds in a cage up here, always on display yet forever out of reach.
I couldnāt imagine anything further from Copperdale and the quiet, snow-covered forests around it.
I wondered if Paul would expect me to move in with him at some point. I didnāt see how heād be able to work from anywhere else. I could work wherever, but could I live here? Surrounded by fences and cameras and security guards in a huge, empty house?
I pushed the thought away as I heard the clacking of heels behind me.
āJulia, can I talk to you for a moment?ā, Sierra asked softly. āI would really like to apologise for what I said earlier. It was never my intention to insult you.ā
āI know you didnāt mean it like that, but I still canāt help feeling that you donāt like me very much. Or maybe you just donāt think Iām good enough for Paul?ā
Sierra bit her lip.
āI shouldnāt have brought up his exes, especially not in front of you. The thing is, they rarely lasted long enough for the media to catch on ā half the time I didnāt even get to meet them before he ended things. So when Paul first told us about you, I got worried. I saw him falling harder and faster than ever before, but youāre so much younger than him and I was struggling to see how it could possibly end well.ā
āRight. Thanks for the vote of confidence.ā
āIām just being honest with you. I tend to be, perhaps, overly protective of Paul. He was even younger than you when we met, we shared a shitty apartment with a few other aspiring actors, all trying to break through. We cheered each other on, audition after audition, practicing lines, commiserating over rejection lettersā¦ And then he got the call forĀ Llama Man, and I ended up as an extra in a cop series which later got me the lead inĀ Cop & Llama, but Iāve fought hard to escape that, branch out to other roles, and Paul justā¦ didnāt even try.ā
āBut he says he prefers the voice acting, though. If youāre his friend, why do you keep pushing him if heās perfectly happy?ā
āBecause Iām his friend. Sure, he says heās happy. Maybe he even believes it. But Paul was always the best of us, and he never took his talent seriously. Heās a great voice actor, but it always felt like he secretly wanted more, heās just scared. What if he sucked? The media would have a field day, writing about how he should just stick to his cartoons. Youāve seen what theyāre like, you just had your first front page. Which, by the way, must be rough. Iām sorry for adding to the stress you must be under right now. Can we maybe start over?ā
āApology accepted, Iām too much of a fangirl to be mad at you anyway. And Iām managing, but I must say, being on the cover of a magazine is a lot less fun than advertised.ā
āTrust me, it depends heavily on the kind of magazine. But being hung out to dry by some gossip rag is a rite of passage in this business. You should have seen the frenzy when rumours about me and Dave started circulating. It was wild. I once walked out of an interview because they asked me if the llama costume stayed on during sex!ā
āWell? Did it ever?ā
Sierra grinned.
āNo way ā do you have any idea how heavy and warm that costume is? Itās not exactly a sexy superhero muscle suit, itās a full size sports mascot.ā
āTrue. Although Iām not sure Iād appreciate it if Paul kept his costume on either.ā
We both laughed, and I barely registered the steps behind me before I felt Pauls arms around me, his warm hands covering my eyes.
āGuess who.ā
I heard Sierra chuckle. āActually, Paul, we were kinda busy out here, bonding over the trials of dating men in llama costumes. Itās a very exclusive club.ā
āI guess Dave and I have to start our own club then. But it's almost midnight and I would like to borrow my girlfriend, if you donāt mind.ā
āFine, you can have her back. Iāll just go get myself one of those fruit tarts before Lee and Dave eat them all.ā
She walked back inside without waiting for a response.
She wouldnāt have gotten one anyway.

There's something outrageous about having to do press conferences. They're kind of awful at all times, but they're particularly awful now - in the middle of losing and rumors and all kinds of shitty fucking things that people want to dig into Mika about. The press wants a story. Mika wants to live in relative fucking peace.
Rangers management is only happy to facilitate one of those, and it's not Mika's goddamn peace.
He's kind of sick of it all - the hounding questions, the incessant reports that they're going to take Chris from him, the nonstop queries about his slump. He wants to go home, though if pressed - hah. - he probably wouldn't be able to define what 'home' means.
He wants to live in a world where he skates with Chris every night, and nobody asks him if he thinks he's past his prime, or if he thinks he's being paid more than he's worth. He wants to go home - home being not fucking here, right now.
The media has always been full of assholes, but this particular year seems worse than all the rest. Maybe it's because his tolerance has gone down - after all, he got used to a world where even Rangers beat wasn't allowed in the locker room - but maybe it's because the world seems to be staring down his throat, scrutinizing his every move. He feels, sometimes, like he's in a fucking shark tank, even when he's not reading the news.
So it's peaceful when he gets to sit next to Chris, at least, for this ridiculous interrogation. He avoids calling on the men he knows don't like him - and who, for the record, he barely likes in return. He mostly avoids commenting on trades, and mostly avoids commenting on loss, and tries not to scream, "You weren't even this fucking critical of Quinner," mostly because he knows it's inappropriate.
They're going to twist anything he says anyway, so when he retreats to a room where only Sam and the Rangers are allowed, it feels like peace. He talks to Sam about how he tried baking cinnamon buns to bring in, but they didn't make it past Chris, and Sam laughs, and Sam leaves, because Sam, at least, has some decency.
Chris leaves early - lucky fucker, though Mika knows he's not - and Mika stays late, biking and lifting and trying not to scream. He lets the pounding 5/8 rhythm in his head keep him going, and he tries not to yell his frustrations to the world, and when he finally emerges from his music-fueled lifting session, he drives home.
Home smells like meatballs and pasta and apple pie, because Chris Kreider loves him too much. (Kreids would say there's no such thing. Mika would say that Kreids is probably the most attentive boyfriend on the planet, and he'd go viral on TikTok for half of the bullshit he does for Mika. Krieds would say it's not bullshit. They've had this discussion.)
Also, Kreids has apparently blocked all the news websites from their internet in the last 4 hours, and laughs at Mika when he discovers it. Mika is reminded of how Chris can justify throwing a five hundred dollar iPad to protect his peace, and feels that perhaps, this is only just slightly left of being utterly absurd behavior.
Chris Kreider, sometimes, is so fucking lucky Mika loves him. (Kreids would say he is always so fucking lucky that Mika Zibanejad chose him, out of everyone in the world, but then again, Kreids is a giant sap, so. There's that.)

She wakes a little before two and shuffles into the kitchen. Itās quiet, so Vera must be out somewhere. Thereās a quarter of the Honey Nut Cheerios left, which she eats while absently scrolling through TikTok. None of itās particularly interesting, so she flips over to her texts. Thereās one from Vera (āwent 2 nicoās. get more tp at the store thxā) and a string of messages from Lulu, detailing some kind of crazy shit that went down last night involving two of their new dancers, a stolen g-string, hair-pulling, and a broken bottle of Cristal.
The last one, sent an hour ago from a contact she put into her phone as Hunchback Weirdo, is in all-caps, as if he didnāt fully trust himself with punctuation.
COME BY AT 3 OK?
She holds down the text and sends a thumbs-up reaction. Heās been coming by her house every Sunday at three for the last month and a half and he doesnāt really need to text each time, but she knows he likes to check with her to make sure itās alright.
They donāt ever stay at the house that longānormally she just grabs her jacket and meets him on the porch, then they head in the direction of the beach. Itās only a few blocks to the boardwalk, a wide expanse that somehow feels just big enough for the two of them to walk side-by-side. It was awkward at firstāneither of them really knew what to say after everything that had happened in his grandmotherās carābut after a while the quiet grew easier, and they learned how to talk in ways that seemed safe. He talks about his grandmother a lot, and about growing up in Russia. Aniās childhood stories are far less heart-warming, so she avoids them, instead detailing all the things Veraāor Veraās shitty boyfriendāhad done to piss her off that week, along with anything fun or outrageous that had happened at work. Sheās got a job at a new club now, secured through a glowing reference from Jimmy, and like any place full of drunk men and insecure women, thereās always drama.
They donāt ever talk about what happened in the car.
She thinks about it sometimes, the memory pulling deep and hard in her chest, a strange mixture of shame and sadness and gratitude that she doesnāt know where to put. Being around him makes it a little easier, which is why when he comes by she always goes with him, despite how fucking strange the whole thing really is.
A minute after three thereās a knock at the doorāAniās already in her jacket, fingers flipping back the deadbolt.
Itās warmer out today, a tiny promise of spring, but the wind is brisk and tugging against her hair and cheeks, and she sinks deeper into the bulk of her jacket. Igorās only in a black hoodie; she doesnāt ask him if heās cold.
Along the boardwalk, there are older men in rumpled suits and women in headscarves sitting together on benches. A kid runs along the beach, trying to get a kite to lift into the air. For a moment, theyāre walking close enough that their fingers brush together and Ani quickly stuffs her hands into her pockets, doing her best to ignore the unsteady feeling in her stomach.
By the time they get down to Coney Island the feeling has subsided enough that she lets him buy her a pretzel, which she eats piece by piece against the metal railing overlooking the beach while he smokes.
Sheās already told him about Nico, how he had clogged their toilet two days ago and then fucked everything up more by continuing to flush, the whole thing overflowing and ruining their bathmat.

She laughs a little, although itās mostly a sigh, and then lets the silence settle around them as they stare out at the mostly empty beach. He hasnāt finished the cigarette yet, so she reaches out for a quick drag.
āSo howās Garnik doing?ā she asks as she hands it back, not realizing until she asked that part of her was actually curious. She wasnāt surprised he hadnāt mentioned Vanya or the Zakharovs at all, but it seemed a little weird he never said anything about the two Armenians, who he probably still saw all the time.
āGarnik?ā
āYeah, Garnik. His face still look like a fuckinā raccoon?ā
Igor shrugs, then drops the cigarette butt to the ground and stomps it out with the toe of his sneaker. āI donāt know.ā
āYou donāt know how your bossās face looks?ā
Thereās a tiny shake of his head, and he turns to lean back against the railing. āI donāt work for him. For any of them.ā
The words cut through her more strongly than the wind, leaving only questions in their wake.
āSince when?ā she asks.
He turns his face to finally look at her, those blue eyes trained on hers in a way that always felt like she was something worth looking at. She had hated it at firstāthe intensity behind itābut now sheās wondering what it was really trying to convey.
āSince we come back from Vegas.ā
For a moment sheās uncharacteristically speechless. He hadnāt worked for them since Vegas? He had quit his jobāfor what? For her? No, that made no sense. What was she to him? She had been a problem he had been sent to fix, a rock in someone elseās shoe, and then she had fucked him and cried all over him and run away. And now? She still has no fucking clue what they are. But she had thought she had been left alone to handle all of it, and heās telling her that sheās not alone, that he walked away to meet her on the other side. And heās here, with her, knocking on her front door every Sunday, trading stupid stories with her as they follow the path along the beach, looking after her in a way she hadnāt really understood until this moment.
Heās standing here, next to her, the March wind whipping against the fabric of his hoodie.
Ani steps closer until sheās right in front of him, her arms reaching out to tightly curl around his back. She remembers the feel of him, the warmth, and leans in, her cheek pressing up against the top of his shoulder. Thereās a moment of hesitationāshe hopes itās only out of surpriseāand then his arms wrap solidly around her, drawing her into the hug.
āHi,ā he says, the sound soft, like laughter.
āHey,ā she says, like sheās saying it for the first time.

Someone teach me how to write short hesdcanons, because they always turn out to be wayyy too long :'D

Shane's been making vampire jokes since day one without even know you're actually one. Everytime he makes them you're practically getting a heart attack since you don't really want the town members to know. The possibility of being chased down by torches was not on your agenda.
But come on! There is no easy way to make it not obvious.
You won the egg hunt just to get that straw hat, because it shields your face completely.
Not to mention that even on cloudy days you seem to try to protect your skin. Some residents asked if you're maybe allergic to the sunlight and you just went with that. Marnie that sweet woman took the liberty upon herself and offered to ask Harvey for help, but you quickly shut that idea down saying that because of your past you don't want to make a big deal out of it.
Shane though. Oof.
"What are you? A fucking vampire?"
You freeze, unsure on what to answer, but soon enough you notice that he's just meaning it as a joke or a way to provoke you.
As you two become friends, he one day decides to bring some pizza over. You've been isolating yourself the last couple of days and he is a bit worried. Knowing you you're probably fully invested in work and your farm.
But when he arrives no one is outside on the fields and your front door is slightly open. He hears glass breaking inside so naturally he rushes in like a whole SWAT team with nothing but a frozen pizza as a weapon. He is fully intending on blinding potential enemies with the salami pieces.
"Shane?"
"What the FUCK is going on? Are you hurt?"
What he thought might be an intruder was actually just you being clumsy, but he does notice how you're holding your arm with a painful look on your face. Good luck getting him off your back now.
Your sleeve got ripped apart while building a fence and the light burned your skin, but you tell Shane that it's from starting the fire place. Everything indicates that you haven't even touched the fire place and it's a hot day anyways. You got him suspicious here, but he doesn't say anything. There must be a reason why you'd lie and he'd be damned if he doesn't find out.
Usually he couldn't care less even if someone comes up with such a bad lie. He doesn't have the energy to play detective, but with you it's different. You're one of the very few people who showed him kindness no matter how shitty he behaved and if you're having issues then he wants to help you out.
The next week he sees you stumbling through town and barely holding onto the wall of the bridge. At some point it seems like you're about to fall into the river any second and he runs over to hold you up. The fact that he's running late to his shift is long forgotten.
"I'm bringing you home."
"No, Shane, I promise I'm fine. I just feel a bit light headed."
"Bullshit."
He's way stronger than he looks and while he's carrying you back you to Harvey's clinic he realizes how dead you look. More dead than usually of course.
The closer he gets you to the clinic though the more you try to get out of his grip.
"Stop it, you need a fucking doctor."
"No, please."
Shane stops dead in his tracks upon hearing how desperate you sound. He's never heard you beg like this and his stomach is practically turning upside down from all the concern.
"Carry me home and I will explain everything to you. I'm done with lying and hiding."
You're hallucinating. That must be it. But something about your tone and your pleading eyes that he barely makes out behind those dark sun glasses make him obey to your wish.
As he lays you down into your bed he gets you a glass of cold water, but you almost smack it out of his hands, pointing towards the fridge. Confused, he looks inside, but can't see anything besides the usual vegetables and some left overs. Then, behind all these items, he spots something dark. Something red.
In the next moment you're next to him, grabbing that red liquid and ripping the package open like he usually does with booze when he's going through a particularly nasty time.
"This better be strawberry juice."
Deep down he knows it's not and he isn't sure what he feels watching you chug that entire bag in one go. With anyone else he'd most likely be disgusted or mortified, but the feelings he has for you, ones that he can't quite describe yet, are way too deep to feel anything negative towards you. His mind is still occupied with images of you nearly falling off the bridge and not being able to stand on your own two feet.
But you sure got some explaining to do and you promised to tell him everything after all. There's no way to get yourself out of this mess. You're scared of Shane's reaction. You don't want to ruin whatever you guys have going on, but what you don't know is how deep that bond between you goes. You have no idea that Shane reached a point where he would go through fire for you, but in your defense he's not the type to really show that.
He takes the information pretty well and with humor too. Internally he's screaming a bit though, because OMG HE WAS RIGHT ALL ALONG?!
"Are you telling me that...this is the skin of a killer?"
"Shane, stop."
"How long have you been 17?"
"I'm not 17 and stop with the Twilight references."
"Can you read my mind?"
"THIS IS SERIOUS-"
"So you have visions?"
You're not even sure if you wanna question his oddly deep knowledge of those movies.
You explain to him that most vampires nowadays live off of blood donations and the people donating know where it goes to. The issue with you now is that it's difficult getting these donations since Pelican Town is quite isolated from the cities and you can't ask Harvey to receive them for you, because he doesn't know that vampires even exist.
You've been holding back with your drinking, but it's affecting your health badly which is the reason why you almost fucking died there at the bridge.
Without a second thought Shane offers you to give you his blood, BUT there is a problem with that as well. Considering the amount of alcohol in his system his blood would make you even sicker than no blood at all.
Now he has the right motivation to stop drinking! And it works!
You drink it directly from his wrist though, because you don't really have the right equipment for taking it differently.
Shane has to hide the bite marks otherwise Marnie thinks he's gotten into something worse than booze.
He's a ride or die, okay. He backs up every made up story of yours to not make anyone in town suspicious.
You have to expect lots of teasing from his side as well and I'm not only talking about twilight references.
"What happens if I throw garlic at you?"
"Fuck around and find out, bitch. I suggest that you don't even start fucking around."
You could serve him some vegetable he doesn't like and he would yell "THE POWER OF YOBA COMPELLS YOU"
Absolutely adores your fangs. Sometimes they're super fucking adorable when you shoot him a bright smile and other times he finds them so hot that his knees turn into pudding.
Don't get me started on the fact that you can crush rocks with your bare hands.
Doesn't know if he should be very scared or very in love.

Higurashi When They Cry Hou Ch. 8 Matsuribayashi pt. 77
I wonder if the word doujin is more or less the Japanese equivalent to calling a thing an indie over here in the west? I suspect that thatās the case, because Iām pretty sure Higurashi was described as a doujin visual novel series (sound novel, whatever). Back when I first read the phrase, a million years ago, I was given the impression that doujins were just fan-comics about a given property, or a fan creation rather. The reason I bring this up is because I would like to once again remind you of the existence of the Sonohigurashi vs. Touhou Universe series.
You want to play some real kusoge ass poverty fighters? Fighting games are awesome man, they can be so amazingly shitty, but just oddly compelling to play. I guess that goes to show your product made it if people make some fighting games for it. Umineko got one, Higurashi got several, Fate has a few.
Fun as it would be to talk more about the Higurashi fighting game I should probably move on.
Itās not quite everyone doing it, but you must admit it is still a little bit frightening. Cause despite everything it is being done with expert timing.
Some times you gotta make jokes just for you.
I personally donāt do any of the martial arts for physical fitness (please contain your surprise), but Iāve heard from those that do that it can be a pretty fulfilling activity. Also I guess Akasaka is meant to be an embodiment of that phrase Bruce Lee said about fearing the man who practiced one kick ten thousand times.
I really like the absolutely ice cold response to Okonogiās trying to hype himself up. āGood for you.ā I know that Akasakaās power-up between Himatsubushi and now could be seen as Ryukish07 trying way too hard to make him cool. While the attempts to make Tomitake seems much cooler and as adept a fighter fell flat on its face for me, it works better for Akasaka. Tomitake is kind of a dweeb who is just constantly on the receiving end of punishment, he tries so very hard to act like a bad ass with his escape attempt from the Mountain Dogs, but it always ends in failure and his inevitable death. Akasaka meanwhile, he got shot in Himatsubushi, and the next time we see him in a similar scenario heās taking down armed gunmen and leading raids on criminal strongholds. Sure I think itās kind of overdoing it when it describes his punches as similar to armor piercing bullets, or when he punches so hard it leaves massive dents in vehicles. But it works in the fantastical world of Higurashi.
If Akasaka had tried to establish himself as a big capable fighter, but then immediately slipped on a banana peel and ate shit then I would probably think he was just as pathetic a dweeb as Tomitake. I donāt know how Iād react if during this display of martial prowess one of the Mountain Dogs just got him with a stun gun, or if a Minagoroshi-era Takano just shot him. Part of me wants to think Iād be impressed by their subversion, but who knows, maybe that would be a bridge too far and just sink the chapter.
Iām sure the fight scene is quite entertaining to watch in motion. Be it anime, or the motion implied by manga.
Having read the manga chapter in question: ehhhhh. Itās amusing seeing someone who canāt draw guns have to draw a ton of guns.
Having watched the anime all I can say is: no...
Itās always funny to me reading any scene in basically anything where one side gets completely annihilated in any sort of battle and one of the scenes after is some variation of people arguing whose fault it is they got stomped so thoroughly. More specifically itās funny when itās some sci-fi story where the humans just get wiped by some alien force or other. But it happens a lot in modern settings as well.

It really is a shame that JC stans absolutely refuse to allow any sort of discussion that doesnāt fall in lockstep with commonly accepted fanon because I honestly think heās a much more interesting, intriguing character than the one they present to me.
Canon Jiang Cheng does a lot of shitty things both on and off the page, that the narrative doesnāt gloss over even if WWX does, which makes those brief glimpses of his ability to be better and his narrative journey much more interesting in contrast. Heās more interesting as an example of someone who has been essentially free to give into his negative impulses for years, heās got it honed down to an art, but actually when push comes to shove he still has a grain of a decent person in there. Itās a very interesting flip of what Iāve seen a lot with other characters: if you put pressure on them, they show less savory traits whereas JC actually shows that he can be better than he presents himself when he doesnāt have a chance to think and talk himself out of it. Itās such a fun way to make a character, heās really rare that way and I enjoy him.
Unfortunately because heās not allowed to be shitty otherwise and all of his actions must have an explanation that makes it so he was the one most in the right, I donāt get to enjoy that contrast. I get wanting to make a character you like easier to enjoy, but also in the process they have completely taken away my ability to enjoy him in the process, and hated on me for enjoying him without glossing over the things he says or does.
Hm, I may have to disagree on the idea that Jiang Cheng acts like a better person under pressure. I think he acts like a better person when thereās someone whose approval he wants around to keep him in line. I also donāt think the kid him was too far gone until after the xuanwu of slaughter.
But this is a discussion that we can have. I couldnāt have this same discussion with a jc truther. Canāt even get them to acknowledge the actions of his that are clearly spelled out in the text, let alone start debating the nuances of how he ticks. Mxtx calls him a product, a piece of the overall work she called mdzs, but stans want us to think of him as if heās their best friend from down the street. No discussion can be had under those conditions.
