Rta - pronounced as Rih-tha (Sanskrit) and first originated as a concept in the Vedic religion during the period of 1500–1100 BCE. It stands for: Order, rule, truth
It is the principle of natural order in which the universe and everything in it flows and operates.
It consists of natural, moral, and sacrificial order - and isn't something prescriptive or forced on you, but a concept life, people, and the universe is supposed to uphold. The idea of the individual, their (your) actions in relation to Rta and fulfilling yours - your duty to yourself, the right thing - path, development, society, and the natural order of things. It's not always clear cut and defined as it's both broad and granular and applies to one's individual destiny shaped and guided by their actions in life and adhering (or not) to the various laws of life/universe/time/and the world/people around you.
The macro can affect the micro, and the micro's choices ripple through/resonate through the macro - eventually giving way to the concept of Karma.
In the Avestan (ancient Iranian - Zoroastrian) it is known as asa - divine truth, right, sacred order, or truth.
This concept exists in many ancient cultures and has continued through time today to be found as divine will - destiny/destined in popular fiction like The Wheel of Time with the Pattern and the Wheel's Will, the idea of the Ta'veren and in the case of Stephen King's brilliant Dark Tower series, Ka or Ka-tet In ancient Egypt, this was seen through Ma'at, the goddess of divine order, law, morality, and the concept existed beyond her as a principle because of/from her. Ma'at became a set of laws including 38 declarations based on truth, and adherence to divine order.
Think 10 commandmants but less catchy and more of them.
In Chinese philosophy we have Tao or Dao - the metaphysical concept found in Confucianism and Taoism and often translates to: the way, the path, the route - the cosmic force that can't be named or described and is of the natural harmony of all living things and the way they move. Seeking and being in tune with this harmony is the goal of Taoism.
This is just a short primer on shared concepts like this and how they've existed since the birth of cradle civilizations and continued through time in culture, and permeated fiction (old and new).

Ramayana No. 11: The Beginning and the End—Understanding the First Canto of the Gita Press Ramayana
As I begin my journey through the Gita Press edition of the Ramayana, I find myself immediately struck by the structure of the first canto. Within just a few verses, the entire epic is laid out before the reader—Rama’s exile, his defeat of Ravana, the rescue of Sita, and his triumphant return to Ayodhya where he reigns as king. It’s a “happily ever after” summary that seems to condense the entire…

Bharata, Bhārata, Bharatā, Bharat ~ That is India
||Why Bhārata instead of India|| There is a 2200 years old “Hātigumphā Inscription” found in the ‘Udayagiri Hills’, near Bhubaneshwar in Odisha. This is a very special inscription, as it contains the earliest recorded mention of the word “Bhāratavarṣa” (Prakritized as – ‘Bhāratavasa’). Line number 10 of this inscription mentions “Bharatavarsha” (translation published by Jayaswal and Banerji in…

South Asian and Hindu Influences in ATLA (Part 2)
disclaimer: i was raised culturally and religiously hindu, and though i've tried to do my research for this post and pair it with my own cultural knowledge, i'm not an expert on hinduism by any means. should i mess up, please let me know.
please also be aware that many of the concepts discussed in this post overlap heavily with religions such as buddhism and jainism, which might have different interpretations and representations. as i'm not from those religions or cultures, i don't want to speak on them, but if anyone with that knowledge wishes to add on, please feel free.
Part 1
In the previous post, I discussed some of the things ATLA got right in its depictions of desi and hindu cultures. unfortunately, they also got plenty of things wrong - often in ways that leaned towards racist caricatures - so let's break them down, starting with...
Guru Pathik
both the word "guru" and name "pathik" come from sanskrit. pathik means "traveler" or "he who knows the way" while guru is a term for a guide or mentor, similar to a teacher.
gurus were responsible for the very first education systems in ancient india, setting up institutions called gurukuls. students, referred to as disciples, would often spend years living with and learning from their gurus in these gurukuls, studying vedic and buddhist texts, philosophy, music and even martial arts.
however, their learning was not limited merely to academic study, as gurus were also responsible for guiding the spiritual evolution of their disciples. it was common for disciples to meditate, practice yoga, fast for days or weeks, and complete mundane household chores every day in order to instill them with self-discipline and help them achieve enlightenment and spiritual awareness. the relationship between a guru and his disciple was considered a sacred, holy bond, far exceeding that of a mere teacher and student.
aang's training with guru pathik mirrors some of these elements. similar to real gurus, pathik takes on the role of aang's spiritual mentor. he guides aang in unblocking his chakras and mastering the avatar state through meditation, fasting, and self-reflection - all of which are practices that would have likely been encouraged in disciples by their gurus.
pathik's design also takes inspiration from sadhus, holy men who renounced their worldly ties to follow a path of spiritual discipline. the guru's simple, nondescript clothing and hair are reflective of the ascetic lifestyle sadhus are expected to lead, giving up material belongings and desires in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and, ultimately, liberation from the reincarnation cycle.
unfortunately, this is where the respectful references end because everything else about guru pathik was insensitive at best and stereotypical at worst.
it is extremely distasteful that the guru speaks with an overexaggerated indian accent, even though the iranian-indian actor who plays him has a naturally british accent. why not just hire an actual indian voice actor if the intention was to make pathik sound authentic? besides, i doubt authenticity was the sole intention, given that the purposeful distortion of indian accents was a common racist trope played for comedy in early 2000s children's media (see: phineas and ferb, diary of a wimpy kid, jessie... the list goes on).
furthermore, while pathik is presented a wise and respected figure within this episode, his next (and last) appearance in the show is entirely the opposite.
in the episode nightmares and daydreams, pathik appears in aang's nightmare with six hands, holding what appears to be a veena (a classical indian music instrument). this references the iconography of the hindu deity Saraswati, the goddess of wisdom and knowledge. the embodiment of divine enlightenment, learning, insight and truth, Saraswati is a member of the Tridevi (the female version of the Trimurti), one of the most respected and revered goddesses in the Hindu pantheon... and her likeness is used for a cheap laugh on a character who's already treated as a caricature.
that's bad enough on its own, but when you consider that guru pathik is the only explicitly south asian coded character in the entire show, it's downright insulting. for a show that took so many of its foundational concepts from south asia and hinduism and yet provided almost no desi representation in return, this is just rubbing salt in the wound.
Chakras
"chakra", meaning "circle" or "wheel of life" in sanskrit, refers to sources of energy found in the human body. chakra points are aligned along the spine, with energy flowing from the lowest to the highest point. the energy pooled at the lowest chakra is called kundalini, and the aim is to release this energy to the highest chakra in order to achieve spiritual enlightenment and consciousness.
the number of chakras varies in different religions, with buddhism referencing five chakras while hinduism has seven. atla draws from the latter influence, so let's take a look at the seven chakras:
Muladhara (the Root Chakra). located at the base of the spine, this chakra deals with our basest instincts and is linked to the element of earth.
Swadhisthana (the Sacral Chakra). located just below the navel, this chakra deals with emotional intensity and pleasure and is linked to the element of water.
Manipura (the Solar Plexus Chakra). located in the stomach, this chakra deals with willpower and self-acceptance and is linked to the element of fire.
Anahata (the Heart Chakra). located in the heart, this chakra deals with love, compassion and forgiveness and is linked to the element of air. in the show, this chakra is blocked by aang's grief over the loss of the air nomads, which is a nice elemental allusion.
Vishudda (the Throat Chakra). located at the base of the throat, this chakra deals with communication and honesty and is linked to the fifth classical element of space. the show calls this the Sound Chakra, though i'm unsure where they got that from.
Ajna (the Third Eye Chakra). located in the centre of the forehead, this chakra deals with spirituality and insight and is also linked to the element of space. the show calls it the Light Chakra, which is fairly close.
Sahasrara (the Crown Chakra). located at the very top of the head, this chakra deals with pure cosmic consciousness and is also linked to the element of space. it makes perfect sense that this would be the final chakra aang has to unblock in order to connect with the avatar spirit, since the crown chakra is meant to be the point of communion with one's deepest, truest self.
the show follows these associations and descriptions almost verbatim, and does a good job linking the individual chakras to their associated struggles in aang's arc.
Cosmic Energy
the idea of chakras is associated with the concept of shakti, which refers to the life-giving energy that flows throughout the universe and within every individual.
the idea of shakti is a fundamentally unifying one, stating that all living beings are connected to one another and the universe through the cosmic energy that flows through us all. this philosophy is referenced both in the swamp episode and in guru pathik telling aang that the greatest illusion in the world is that of separation - after all, how can there be any real separation when every life is sustained by the same force?
this is also why aang needing to let go of katara did not, as he mistakenly assumed, mean he had to stop loving her. rather, the point of shedding earthly attachment is to allow one to become more attuned to shakti, both within oneself and others. ironically, in letting go of katara and allowing himself to commune with the divine energy of the universe instead, aang would have been more connected to her - not less.
The Avatar State
according to hinduism, there are five classical elements known as pancha bhuta that form the foundations of all creation: air, water, earth, fire, and space/atmosphere.
obviously, atla borrows this concept in making a world entirely based on the four classical elements. but looking at how the avatar spirit is portrayed as a giant version of aang suspended in mid-air, far above the earth, it's possible that this could reference the fifth liminal element of space as well.
admittedly this might be a bit of a reach, but personally i find it a neat piece of worldbuilding that could further explain the power of the avatar. compared to anyone else who might be able to master only one element, mastering all five means having control of every building block of the world. this would allow the avatar to be far more attuned to the spiritual energy within the universe - and themselves - as a result, setting in motion the endless cycle of death and rebirth that would connect their soul even across lifetimes.
#atla#atla cultural influences#hinduism in atla#welp i thought this would be the last part but i ended up having more to talk about than i thought#so i'll save the book 3 inspirations for the next post#including my absolute favourite combustion man#and by favourite i mean kill it with fire why did you ever think this was okay to do writers

Ramayama- the Indian epic some of you know. But did you know of the Ramakien?
It's the Thai national epic which is their version of the Ramayama. It was Thai King Rama VI who traced back the inspirations of the Ramakien to:
Ramayana, the Vishnu Purana, and Hanuman Nataka but how did an Indian epic come to be shaped into a Thai national epic as well?
Simply put? Buddhism.
The more complicated answer? Buddhism but through missionaries after a long history of Indianized states already made it easy to spread parts of Indian culture, stories/myths, and obviously Buddhism.
What is an Indianized state? Well, some were parts of the Indochinese peninsula known as Funan (Phu Nam - Vietnam), Champa, and more (seriously, a lot more).
TLDR, Southeast and Western Asian lands that had heavy Indian influences and or rulers at one time.
Why/how? Well, interestingly, there are Chinese books that have myths/stories of this. The Book of Liang is the most popular source, and some of its stories are reiterated in Indian and Southeast Asian folkore/stories.
They are very beautiful and cool stories but the reality as argued by historians?
Likely Indian merchants seeking wider wealth (migrating through/over the Oceanic silk road routes) into parts of South East Asia who eventually shared stories/treatises and more of Indian political statecraft, eventually leading some merchants into positions of power, rulers marrying across countries to gain/strengthen power, so on. Eventually, voila. Indianized parts of the nearby world bearing Sanskrit inscriptions, Vedic/Hindu statues, and more.
A DNA sample taken from Funan from this time period shows an individual a lot of South Asian DNA admixture approximating 50 percent. The site is what is today known as Cambodia. Note: the sample dates to that time as when the individual lived, not that the sample was collected then. Now, this tradition continued of course over time. Asia was pretty well interconnected.
India and China have a rich tradition (documented) of trade of all sorts including, political craft/statecraft, ruling, censuses, well-being of people, religion/culture, philosophy, arts, and more.
So, dialed up over time, this same Indianization is what's influenced (in part, not wholly) Thailand (as it has a great deal of Chinese influence) as well. But for the purposes of the Ramakien, in the logical sense, this is likely what happened to bring the story of Ramayama, the Buddhist as well as Vedic cultural traditions found there or what evolved from them, such as the worship and reverence of/for Hanuman including him being involved in Muay Thai (note, not credited with/creating it) but he is often depicted in imagery, has a technique named after him, and regarded by many as the ultimate Thai boxer (within the culture) for the traits of the sport he embodies.
Now full circle back to Ramakien. There are some central differences, obviously given that it's more rooted in Buddhism and its tenants than the Vedic epics focused on Dharma (cosmic order/duty) vs. a Buddhist lens of living. Some of the characters are similar (not the same) and serve similar roles with name and slight changes, of course. Not to mention the history and traditions of the Jatka tales spread by Buddhism into the area over time evolved as performed by locals on stage and other venues to be more Thai, feature Thai topography and landmarks and takes.
And this is a light history on the Ramakien's coming to being and some of why there are 300 (yes 300) versions of Ramayama in the world. And, how Indianization happened in parts of the world and its effects. Which all circles back to how stories are traded, evolve and are coopted, adapted, shaped to serve/entertain the cultures they are presented/ended up in.

↻ VARNA, GUNA, PURUSHARTH, NATURE, GANA & YONI IN VEDIC ASTROLOGY
basics of vedic astrology. ask box. masterlist.
important: this master post will consist of three major posts wherein i will be elaborating each of these six mentioned factors. understanding them is key to understanding the deeper nature of the nakshatras, and how compatibility works in vedic astrology. it is not possible to work on all of them in a single post. also, order is irrelevant here. although i usually let it slide, i would recommend reading even the theory and background part in these three posts because they are relevant to further understanding. without it, things may not make sense. i have touched on sensitive topics like varna with care so as to not hurt religious sentiments. but i would appreciate being called out if i have said anything that may spread hatred. it is never my intent to create discord. i would request others to be polite and respectful as well. these are all topics deeply entwined with ancient hindu culture. any disrespect, misinformation and hateful behaviour will have you kicked out of this space. long post ahead, i wish the readers best of luck.
◍ VARNA + GANA
i would like to start off by mentioning that varna and guna are used majorly for checking compatibility between two people or for suggesting appropriate career paths.
varna is for relating the native's attitude towards the world and their work / responsibilities. gana is for analysing the native's nature. so don't use these things in an all encompassing way, and it is better if these tools are used only on the things they are intended for.
VARNA
INTRODUCTION: varna, literally translates to 'caste'. it is noteworthy to mention that vedic astrology, one of the vedangas, was written by sages in antiquity. the caste system that came to ostracize the poor in the name of religion in the indian subcontinent by the 1900s is nothing like what the sages intended for varna to mean, due to which it has come to gain an inherently bad reputation. firstly, the caste system started out with a basic concept—how people brought money into their home. it had nothing to do with one's birth. this is not to be confused with gotra, which refers to bloodline. our bloodline remains the same, but based on what people did to gain money we classify society into 5 major categories, which will be elaborated below. secondly, the varna allotted to each nakshatra is based off the nakshatra's nature. i won't be delving too deep into this, but careful consideration leads one to realize that certain traits indicate saintly personas and others indicate an outlaw. of course, the interpretations aren't so extreme, and i will expand on them further.
brahmin—the caste that studied vedas, tended to the statues of hindu gods, assisted day-to-day prayers, rituals, festivals and rites. they were gurus, translating roughly to 'teacher'. nakshatras—krittika, purva phalguni, purva ashada, purva bhadrapada
kshatriyas—the caste that ruled lands, that is, kings and queens. nakshatras—pushya, uttara phalguni, uttara ashada, uttara bhadrapada
vaishyas—the caste that did trade and business. they brought money by selling their services. they are majorly divided into two parts; farmers and traders. artisans, dancers, musicians etc. were considered to be traders. nakshatras— merchants—ashwini, punarvasu, hasta farmers—mrigashira, chitra, jyeshtha, dhanishtha
shudras—the sweeper caste. these were the people who carried out menial tasks such as maids, sweepers, butchers, servants, constructions workers etc. again, they can be classified into two major parts; butchers and the servants. nakshatras— workers—rohini, magha, anuradha, revati butchers—ardra, swati, moola, shatabhisha
mleccha—the outcastes. these were people who committed heinous crimes and were a threat to society. even a brahmin who comitted the sin of raping another woman could become a mleccha. mleccha were not any 'caste', they were no caste at all and condemned until they died. we only include people here who committed wrongdoings under situations under their own control. a woman who aborted a child due to her own health issues, trans people etc are not to be included here, unless they commit another crime. nakshatras—ashlesha, bharani, vishakha, shravana.
now, let's come down to business. following are general guidelines required to use the varna system—
we only use the caste / varna of our moon sign. having a certain varna in many of your planets is not indicative of anything, only consider the varna of your moon sign.
varna is used for analysing many things, for starters. we use varna for figuring out the most appropriate life path for oneself, and also which kind of career the native would thrive in. one's moon sign's varna is indicative of how we interact with the world and what things we're good with.
note that we employ flexibility here. having a nakshtra in a brahmin varna does not make you 'superior', you simply have other strengths, is all. similarly, having a mleccha varna does not make you a bad person, or that you will commit crimes.
in friendships, marriages, and other unions varna represents how well the ideals of two people match. for eg, a brahmin will never get along with a shudra. nor will a kshatriya. vaishya will get along with shudra, and with brahmin, but not with kshatriya and so on.
tbh the complexity with mleccha is that it belongs nowhere so compatibility matching becomes tricky. an outcaste is not accepted by society, so discussing them becomes difficult. personally, i believe that mleccha varna people can only get along well with each other.
GENERAL VARNA OBSERVATIONS
kshatriya naks are usually stubborn and self-righteous. once they make up their mind about something, it's very hard to convince them otherwise, even if you're right. pushya people even end up losing their trust in those who question their judgement. they can be impulsive and have difficulty keeping their silence when they are hurt. genuinely flamboyant people smh you tell them to wear something casual and they'll bring out a met gala ass outfit. very beautiful people though, they entrance others easily with their charm and beauty, so they get away with it. kinda dramatic too lmao these people often have the jester's privilege 🤷♀️ i said what i said. there's a regal aura about them and they easily get away with things. it repeatedly reminds me of achilles, for some reason. bold, bright and attractive; and most of all, worthy of praise. their fame is well deserved, but restraint on the smug attitude is important to avoid making enemies. these people are prone to getting back stabbed. also likely to challenge the system. but not like a revolutionary radical way like mleccha naks do, but rather 'fy bitch, i'm gonna wear what i wanna and look how i naturally am. y'all ain't got shit on me.' if i'm being honest, it's actually pretty respectable.
mleccha nak people are most likely to question the working of things. and they are the type of people who research everything before they fight about it, to make sure they can't be proven wrong. bharani is pretty much the face of this aspect. they easily feel victimised and are sensitive to criticism. sensitive does not mean cry baby though, like bharani could probably punch your face in if it has had enough, sensitive is used in the context of reactive here. they are the people who are most likely to be abused or ignored. usually have trauma related to certain aspects of life. ashlesha have childhood trauma, bharani have trauma related to being restrained (emotional manipulation and being misguided by people they trusted) and so on... mleccha naks have a tendency of being air-headed when it comes to whoever is hurt by their words when they are certain they are speaking the truth. or when they decide they had enough shit and want to voice their feelings. they stop caring about societal restraints and could even spit at a king's face if it comes down to it. usually lonely people. if i'm being honest ashlesha manages to become an odd one out here too, since they don't really fit in much anywhere. they crave company but they are repeatedly betrayed. so it's like push and pull with them, and others don't want to be with such a person. ashlesha's biggest lesson is to see the truth for what it is.
brahmin nak people.. enjoy life, so to say. they can be kinda lazy or have tendencies to order people around. can be self-righteous and massive snobs when they are not self-conscious. other than that, they are pretty chill people. they go with the flow and hold on to the seaweeds when they sense the waters are getting too fast. they know to, and when not to exert themselves. morally good people though, usually have good childhoods. kind of reminds me of gryffindors, they want the best for everyone, but they are a bit rough around the edges and unintentionally hurt others. ngl most of them were very proud people, and others were sadistic. ig brahmin naks have an air of authority which they are more than aware of and it adds to their already inflated egos. it is necessary to remain humble, otherwise people will easily hate on these people. they are very talented, and so most people desire to bring them down as soon as they can. acting foolishly or with vanity is like their one-way ticket to downfall.
vaishya nak people are incredibly clever and quick witted. of course, since it's a wide range of naks i won't generalise, but remember that wit exists in various forms. such as ashwini is prodigal type of intelligence, whereas chitra is 'sell combs to a bald man' type of wit. the farmer category & the worker shudras are hard working naks. they are devoted to what they do and remain grounded, even after massive success. it is difficult for them to see past excessive fonts and twisted words. tbh it doesn't make much sense to them, they are the type to say stuff as it is. no buttering, no boot licking. they believe that if you want something, then you work for it; no excuses. revati is a bit of a nepo baby, but they definitely believe in hard work, as well. often worth their salt. can be delusional though, at least it keeps them happy. the merchant vaishyas are the clever ones. these are the type of people you want to associate with smart work. the farmers category was hard work, but here wit is a major theme. they also don't mind buttering as long as it gets work done. clever people. probably would use others for their own benefit. their usefulness gains them many friends and accomplishments in life. the butcher shudras are just as hardworking as the worker shudras, but they are classified as having a more 'it is what it is' type of mindset. they can hurt people at times, and have a harsh nature. they are the type of people who accept life for what it is and silently suck it up. not ones to complain, usually. when they they set their mind to completing something, they don't rest until they achieve it. they usually don't demand praise for their work, but definitely deserve it.

GANA
INTRODUCTION: there is no english equivalent for this word, the closest it can be translated to is 'behaviour'. gana is used to compare a native's energy and overall traits in a rough manner with the energies associated with 'swarga' / heaven, 'naraka' / hell and 'mrityu loka' / 'prithvi' / earth. hence, there are three ganas: 'deva' / godly, 'rakshasa' / demonly, 'manushya' / 'nara' / human, respectively. (ironic and funny sounding, but don't think of it from your, i.e a human's perspective. think of it from the view of the universe and you'll understand what it's supposed to mean.)
BASIC INFO: again, it is important to mention that flexibility is exercised in this matter. rakshasa gana naks are not actually demons, it's supposed to describe an energy. only the gana of the moon nak is to be taken in reference. although, yes, most planets' naks being in the same gana makes it the dominant one.
GENERAL OBSERVATIONS OF THE GANAS
deva gana naks are of positive and bright energy. we associate them with the morning, and these people usually function best in the day. they are splendorous and usually strict about their principles or whatever their codes of conduct are. they are impatient, vain, and even selfish at times. intelligence, wit, fierceness, beauty (beauty is used in the context of abundance, not looks) and fine speech is associated with them. they are clean and usually enjoy fresh or healthy food. they can be immense people pleasers, and care a lot about their reputation. they prefer company over solitude.
rakshasa gana naks are abundant in energy and patience. they are deliberate and know where and how to invest their energy. they are associated with the night and have tendencies towards being night-owls. they are learnt in the sciences. they can be messy and unhygienic. they handle intensity, anger and violence from others well, because they know how to handle their own darkness. they can be harsh by nature and hurt others. they are familiar with solitude, and are at comfort with it. company can make them anxious.
manushya gana naks are in the middle of both extremes, embodying balance in their traits. they are usually humanitarian and adore animals. their traits are indefinite most of the times because they are flexible and get along with both deva gana and rakshasa gana people.
✗ deva and rakshasa gana people do not get along, especially if the charts are extremely polar about their nature as well.
✓ manushya gana people get along with all three ganas.
✓ deva and rakshasa gana are compatible with others of their own gana.
✓ two deva gana people are extremely compatible.

KISSING (ASTROLOGY THEORIES). for the real yearners. ✊🏾 this is an eighteen+ post. minors do not interact. this might have more parts as more thoughts come to me, but for now, this is my theory on kissing. part one?
dedicated to my queer little lover. love u silly. 0:) and dedicated to ur lovers as well. i hope they kiss u right.
links. 🌹 — menu. forms. readings.
💋 WHAT IS A KISS?
a kiss is defined as touching with the lips as a sign of love, sexual desire, reverence, or greeting. kissing doesn’t have to be innately sexual or romantic.
💋 FROM WHERE DID KISSING ORIGINATE?
there are some supposed theories that kissing began as something maternal. either from mothers chewing up food and spitting it directly into their babies’ mouths, or because infants use their lips to touch things as a result of breastfeeding.
the earliest form of kissing is dated back to 4,500 years ago in ancient middle east, around modern day iraq and syria. in the vedic sanskrit texts, it’s believed that kissing began as rubbing ur noses as to breathe in each other’s air.
💋 WHAT DOES A KISS SIGNIFY?
well… that depends on the culture. the ancient vedic sanskrit texts describe kissing as “inhaling the soul,” so it was reserved as something incredibly intimate.
the romans had distinguished forms of kisses depending on the context of whom they kissed, but they also were responsible for popularizing kissing as a sexual act.
kissing as we know it isn’t done by half of the world’s cultures. instead, humans often perform some variation of nuzzling, as do other mammals. kissing with the lips thought of as mainly a western thing.
for that reason, i’ll be speaking from my own cultural lens. i live in the west, and i love to kiss. whether the kiss is chaste or due to being aroused, i love to kiss! but today, i’ll be speaking about kissing in a romantic or sexual context. so keep that in mind.
NOW THAT U HAVE READ THE INTRODUCTION, CLICK “Keep reading” TO WELL… KEEP READING!
PLANET VOCABULARY.
kiss. ruled by venus, as it’s a means of expressing affection / love / desire for another using the lips to touch. it’s not innate to use the tongue, although, deep kisses usually make use of the tongue.
lips, touching, affection, love, & desire are also all ruled by venus.
in particular, lips are taurean. as is the tongue, but the tongue also shares rulership with gemini/mercury. this is a similar case for touching. touching is venus and mercury.
affection is libran and 5H (affection has roots in the word to mean ‘to influence’. it’s very libran to be influenced by others, lmao).
love is 5H/7H, venutian. as is desire. although, for desire, i can see martian (or maybe solar influence). desire has roots in a word meaning “star” or “constellation.” it’s a bit more fiery compared to the other words.
the soul is lunar, 1H. spirit is mercurial, 1H, 3H, as it origins in the word meaning ‘breath.’
there’s also an asteroid simply named “kiss (8267).” many hellenistic astrologers do not work with the extended list of asteroids, but i find myself to blend both traditional and modern ideals as i see fit. so i think the kiss asteroid should be used.
SUMMARY OF RELEVANT PLANETS & HOUSES
venus (taurus, libra), 5H, 7H, 1H, moon (cancer), mercury (gemini), mars (aries, scorpio), kiss asteroid.
i feel stronger about mars having rulership over ‘desire’ than the sun because desire’s etymology dealing with stars and constellations is telling considering stars / constellations are only chartable at night.
but i’d view desire as venutian/5H firstly.
now that we’ve defined our key terms, we can examine how to identify the act of kissing in the chart. this is an accumulation of my own personal theories.
KISS (8267) ASTEROID
the first and obvious recommendation would be to look into ur kiss asteroid, since it’s a celestial body for kissing. the sign tells u how the energy is expressed. the house tells u of the surrounding conditions informing how it’s expressed. and the aspects made to the body just tell u about how the energy of the body is expressed as well.
example. kiss in capricorn will not function the same as kiss opp saturn. although, they’ll share some qualities. for example, kiss in capricorn can mean the native is a slow kisser, a shy kisser, a tame kisser, or a kisser. for hours.
but kiss opp saturn can mean that the native feels ashamed when kissing so it delays them from being able to comfortably do so, as they feel internal tension. even if they want to kiss.
this doesn’t account house placements. a kiss-saturn opp in the 1-7 houses will be different compared to one in the 5-11 houses.
i feel like it’s a bit of an extra step, but u can also observe the placement of the kiss asteroid in the venus persona chart. i even think the houses can tell u where u like to be kissed. 1H is on the face, 2H is on the lips or neck, and so on.
then u could also read the kiss asteroid’s persona chart. read it as a natal chart specifically for how u kiss, ur ideal of a kiss, what u don’t like. etc. all of the planets have their significations — even if u don’t think it would. ie, saturn can show u shame relating to kissing. moon can show what makes u feel secure and safe. venus can show how kissing pleases u. etc.
NATAL CHART
venus is going to be the second most obvious for me. it’s the planet of love. the planet of lips. the planet of affection and physical affection. of course u would read it for kissing.
in the natal chart, it’s quite simple.
a weakened venus may not enjoy kissing.
an afflicted venus could or couldn’t enjoy kissing. that depends on whether the venus is strong or weak. but the afflicted venus may experience difficulties while kissing or some discomfort.
a blessed venus could be someone who enjoys kissing a lot, & tends to have good experiences with it too!
how u can determine whether or not ur venus is strong/weak or afflicted/blessed is through examining if u have any placements in taurus/libra, the condition of that planet (so, for example… is it a moon in taurus or is it a mars in taurus?), look to the condition of ur venus especially. is it rejoiced? is it combust? what planets is it aspecting? what house is it in? etc.
the 1H-7H tells u of ur soul and ur partner’s soul. these houses are innately connected. obviously and again, look at the conditions of the lords or planets placed if there are any. but ruler of thumb… if u want a real kisser for u… look to the 7H too. look at ur moon. this is ur soul, ur intimacy. observe its conditions.
PERSONA CHARTS
i think u should cast synastry or composite charts of the venus personas in question. where venus/mercury falls in the charts will tell u about the sensation of touch.
maybe in regular synastry y’all got venus conjunct/trine venus. which is really easy overlay (at face value). but maybe in ur synastry/composite of ur venus persona charts, y’all got saturn opposite venus. this helps deepen the context of how venus is expressed between u two.
look at venus of any ascendant persona chart to see the soul’s expression of love and thus physical touch, desire, and so on. when u align ur ascendant personas, where do y’all ascendants fall in each other’s houses? this is how the soul inhaling could also be read. u can do the same for the moon persona, as the moon is associated with the soul too. and i’d recommend casting a venus persona within the ascendant persona. then look at mercury within that chart. how does ur soul like to be touched? how about ur partner’s?
for example, in my venus persona, i have an ascendant in taurus containing the sun in taurus. that means my 7H will naturally be in scorpio. and to me, a scorpio placement is where the real kissers at. it feels wayyy more passionate for me. my bf has a scorpio moon. it also helps his natal ascendant is my venus persona’s 5H, and he has jupiter/sun/mars in my venus persona’s 3H (the house associated with breathing, thus, the origin of the “spirit.”)
tw // sexual harassment. on the other end, someone with their natal ascendant over my venus persona’s 8H (sagittarius) used to try and forcefully kiss me all the time. it got violent a few times (my natal sag mars is in my venus persona 8H, opposite my venus persona gemini mars). his natal venus was in my venus persona 1H, but taurus was his natal 6H. force is ruled by the 1H and mars. and 6H is just malefic. it rules injury and servitude. :(
so i guess this is why i’m saying these overlays help build a world around ur venus that’s even deeper than natal.
and no, this doesn’t mean just because someone’s natal ascendant is in ur 8H that they’ll harass u. there’s other conditions in this overlay that help explain why this happened to me. but again… this is all theoretical.
u could also see the overlay between their natal chart and ur venus persona or vice versa. see if there’s alignment there.
as i previously said, the moon persona + ascendant persona chart will inform of the soul. observe the 2H to see how u “give and receive” parts of urself / others in that way. but i’d recommend looking at the venus persona chart within the moon / ascendant persona, then looking at the 2H.
in the venus persona chart, i feel like mercury and venus will also be used to determine whether or not u like tongue-kissing. also other factors.
for example, in my venus persona, i have a 1H in taurus with a 2H stellium, including my venus persona chart ruler. my natal taurus venus is in the 1H of my venus persona.
the 2H shows what we like to receive or give. so quite literally… i like to give or receive affection through the mouth, tongue, throat, or breath (including fluids of the mouth, which would be ruled by the moon). this manifests as me being quite transparent with my affection for someone (i never been the type to lie & say i didn’t like someone when i did.) but also… it manifests as me loving tongue down my throat. bad.
my boyfriend also has his venus persona chart containing a 2H stellium. his venus persona ascendant is cancer containing jupiter. my natal 1H is conjunct his venus persona 1H.
between us, i think i’m the one who initiates the kisses most however… when we do kiss, it’s very deep and passionate and we whisper to each other between them. plus his venus persona 3H virgo venus is in my natal 3H and in my venus persona 5H.
so… all that to say… find somebody who astrologically match ur freak.
SYNASTRY & COMPOSITE
now… whether ur partner enjoys kissing or not is irrelevant if u think they suck at it.
for heightened desire, having mars aspecting mars, mars aspecting moon, or mars aspecting venus does a lot. whether it’s synastry or composite. i don’t really read mars for sex, but mars as a root / sacral energy planet, i think it had a lot to do with emotions that are feverish and intense. personally, i don’t even think it’s worth kissing if there is no mutual desire.
venus aspecting venus is gonna be a yes from me. also a trine or sextile aspect between venus and saturn can show y’all kiss for a long time
venus-1H… it carries. likewise, venus aspecting benefics or aspecting the sun/chart ruler of the composite chart. it’s gon carry.
as kissing was describing as ‘inhaling the soul,’ i would like to discuss the soul (re: kissing.) this’ll be significant for synastry/overlay/composite, in my opinion. because ur soul alone will be represented by the 1H. but synastry/overlay/composite tells u how ur soul interacts with the soul of a specific other.
for that reason, the planets that inform the 1H will tell u how ur souls are inhaled by each other. even if the ascendant is of a malefic (sun, saturn, mars), that doesn’t mean y’all can’t kiss well. what are the conditions of the lord, the ascendant itself, what are the planets present, etc.
but sometimes, people are simply incompatible. plain and simple. a real kisser to u might suck at kissing to the next person. someone else might not like how much i love kissing with tongue, even though my bf likes it. so do what works for u! kiss people who make u feel honored and safe! and vice versa.
okay, that’s my kissing theory. i hope y’all liked reading it. readings are open, including custom readings. 👼🏾
with love, HoodReader

I am a Targaryan simp, and I adore most of them, and I understand why some people don't, but y'all need to stop crying about the name Aryan being in their surname and claiming that it means that Targaryens are N*zi's...because you're so fundamentally wrong, and if you'd have done your research properly, you'd know that N*zi's appropriated the name Aryan, which is actually derived from a Sanskrit word (ārya) meaning noble and educated. The name Aryan originated in Ancient India and Ancient Iran, and the white supremacists appropriated the word and used it to classify their so-called "master race" so for god's sake stop using the term Aryan the way the N*zi's did, its actually disgusting.
The name Aryan was never used, before the N*zi's, to classify race. It was, and still is, a first and surname and the Aryan identity was a cultural, religious, and linguistic thing, NOT racial purity. Michael Witzel (researcher of Indian sacred texts) states that term Aryan "does not mean a particular people or even a particular 'racial' group but all those who had joined the tribes speaking Vedic Sanskrit and adhering to their cultural norms (such as ritual, poetry, etc.)
The term Aryan was adopted by various racist and antisemitic writers such as Arthur de Gobineau, Theodor Poesche, Houston Chamberlain, Paul Broca, Karl Penka and Hans Günther during the nineteenth century for the promotion of scientific racism, spawning ideologies such as Nordicism and Aryanism.
Using the name Aryan in conjunction with N*zi's is just fuelling the appropriation, and I'm so sick of seeing antis rant about Targaryens being N*zi's because their name includes the name Aryan. I don't see anyone screaming that Arya Stark is, when her name is the actual word Aryan is derived from.
You don't have to like the Targaryens, but stop relating them to N*zi's because their name has a word N*zi's appropriated and used by racist white supremacist arseholes.
