I was actually just contemplating if a Tudor person would have described an architecture/interior design style as ‘Ancient Roman/Greek maybe Greco-Roman’ and I don’t have an answer yet but I’m having fun!
(Also once again down a rabbit hole on Tudor Kids Toys thank you so much Hever Castle Team I will one day visit one and quietly take notes)

@/NulliArt over at twt did such an amazing job putting my OT3 down on paper I can hardly stand it.
I can now stare at the three of them together somewhere that's not my head! (and you'd better believe I have since she sent this to me!)
It was unintentional but I absolutely adore how Talia is *still* missing Hades' "I love both of them" face while Hyth is just looking at those two with his little smile and all the affection he has.🥲

In a silent temple of a primordial past, the Iron Triangle's search culminates in an unexpected find. Not what they were looking for. Starting with the small truths whispered in the grooves and depths of time.
Or (@fixaidea summary sent for an askgame that made me write it): Shen Wei has been somehow cursed and sealed away underground. The Iron Triangle accidentally find him. (If you want to check a snippet, it's HERE in the askgame answer)

OH MY GOD and ganon? like what’s his deal
ok so. again the more recent games don't have much ganon (of the 4 I've played, only totk has ganondorf, the man, and he's not super important story wise beyond being a guy to fight. botw's enemy is ganon, as a miasma creature of hatred, and skyward sword's enemy is demise, who is not ganon. technically. and then link's awakening is not a standard zelda plot. so no ganon) the older games have more ganon, so I'm working with largely secondhand knowledge, but basically... nintendo will not give this man any sort of depth. he has some? in windwaker? to my understanding, i have not finished that one. but windwaker takes place in a hyrule that's been flooded and ganon always has a really long lifespan so he was there when it flooded and his people were suffering and he was trying to protect them idk the specifics and I don’t know how well done it is but it's there. and then in the rest of the games he's just evil for the sake of being evil?? which, if meant to be because he holds the triforce of power is dumb, because if there's three pieces of something the logical story conclusion isn't that one is automatically bad it's that all three should join in harmony. duh. they won't give him a real motivation for evil beyond conquering for conquering's sake, so if he HAS to be evil I think it'd be more interesting if they made him a victim of demise's curse? like, demise's curse demands a vessel for evil, if hylia's descendant always has the triforce of wisdom and her champion always has the triforce of courage, it'd make sense for demise to take the third piece, the holder of power. so like what if. this guy was just trying to be a good person, a good leader, but knowing from history books, from every ganondorf that has come before, and the triangle in the center of your hand, that you are predestined for evil, that hylia's vessel and her champion will cut you down one day. imagine fighting it. imagine being unable to. I JUST THINK IT COULD BE REALLY FUCKED UP. (also imagine a ganon who is on good terms with zelda and link. imagine having to be cut down by your friends. imagine having to cut down your friend)
the real world reason they won't give him any depth though is racism most likely. so. ganon looks like this in ocarina of time (his first appearance as a man, prior games ganon was just a creature again)
I'm sure you already know what zelda and link look like. he's from a desert tribe called the gerudo (a race of all women btw ganon is the only man they have one man born every hundred years they make him king) who are, in oot, referred to as a tribe of bandits and whatnot they just steal and attack you, so it's like. it's pretty obvious what's going on here, and the gerudo are characterized better in botw although their character design is still very orentalist which is an issue that doesn't really show through THIS ganon's design but IS an issue I promise go look up the gerudo women it's the jasmine in aladdin thing all over again. anyway. so. nintendo this man could be so cool and interesting PLEASEEEEEEE
#I don't actually care about ganon as the character he currently exists as I am VERY invested in who he COULD BE#also there's this fanartist I follow who has an “ancient loz au”#*context for this is that in botw lore the last time ganon had to be fought was 10k years prior#so a lot of people had aus of what that cycle's link zelda and ganon looked like#anyway this fanartists au version of them they were all close in age and friends and then lovers#and I was immediately smacked directly in the head by how devastating the friends to lovers to enemies potential was#so my fun little side ot3 rarepair for the zelda franchise is zelganlink. I get it#some of the fic is so BRILLIANT actually because zelda franchise lore lends itself really well to mixing for your own original story#so I've read some really interesting versions of zelda link and ganon it's so good. that tag is absolutely dead though#to me though it's like zelink and their third but you can tell for some people it's zelgan and their third it's different dynamics#and I do have a preference#ask#witch-of-aiaia#hi aiaia!

Not gonna draw attention to the post because I suspect the person might blow a gasket, but it's always so funny to me when you see someone picking apart fanart, in this case, a popular fan Ot3 pairing, and they're like, "y'all have brainrot, this'll never be canon, you realize that?"
And maybe I'm just ancient, but since when has fandom ever been about validating canon? Canon is incidental to fandom output. It is, at best, a guideline. You can stick to it, or you can go so far off the beaten path that you fall off the edge of the world and wind up in a new one where the map has words like "here be dragons" stamped in the upper corner.
Fandom is about exploration beyond the canon. It can look like canon, talk like canon, and sometimes even emulate it so perfectly you'd swear you've found the author's secret account, but it doesn't have to.
Ultimately, however, it's about having fun. And if you can't understand that, I have no idea what you're doing here.

The Battle Retrospective | Felassan/Ghilara Lavellan/Solas, Small Tyrannies/Ancient Arlathan AU | 811 words
The battle hadn’t gone to plan. No, that wasn’t it. The battle had been a complete, and utter disaster. They’d started off with the numbers advantage, over 200 soldiers in their fighting force. They’d ended with barely 25 soldiers, stumbling back in full retreat to the Lighthouse.
The three generals of the rebellion hadn’t even bothered to wash up, or see to any of their wounds before to stalk up to the war room to replay the events of the battle. To try and find out what had gone so very, very wrong.
Ghilara, still splashed with blood, ash, and sweat from fighting on the front lines, was leaning over the table, eyeing the pieces like a hawk about to dive for its prey. She had deep bags under her eyes, and her wounds, while only superficial were only half scabbed over, still oozing blood and pus from the edges.
Solas on the other hand was leaning back in his chair, surveying over the map with the keen eye of an intellectual, thumb pressed over his lip in contemplation. He seemed so far detached from the situation so as to almost seem emotionless, despite only one hour ago surging healing spells through a dying soldier, running out of mana. Whatever he’d thrown at it hadn’t been enough, and his hands were still splattered with blood from his efforts. His face however was cleaner than Ghilara’s, having taken command from an overlook of the field of battle.
And then there was Felassan, drained of all mana and energy, he’d curled himself up in one of the chairs, barely even paying attention to anything. He watched his lovers more so than the battle plans, the troop numbers and types, or the enemies movements.
Fingers drumming on the table, it was Ghilara who broke that desperate silence. “We needed to pull back our archers sooner,” she said, gesturing to the three figures representing their archery companies, overseen by Ghilara herself. “They were too exposed there.”
But Solas just shook his head, still reclining in his chair. “They had to be there. Our mages needed the volleys to secure their advance.”
“They got overwhelmed nearly immediately!” Ghilara said in nearly a shout, her shoulders rising up like hackles.
“But they did their job. They got our mages into position so that they could directly attack the enemies flank.” Solas’ voice was eerily calm, measured and flat to Ghilara’s rising emotions.
“The sacrifice wasn’t worth it!” She said, straightening to pace like a tiger locked in a cage.
“Sacrifices are a necessary part of war.”
“I am well aware of that Solas,” she said, teeth snapping on the t’s. “But in sacrificing them, we threw away our flexibility. If we hadn’t let them die, then maybe they would have been able to cover our retreat! Gods, Solas, do you know how long it takes for me to train up a single unit of elite archers?”
Solas scowled, his emotion leaking through for the first time since they’d returned. “’Gods’”, he quoted back at her, “you speak their titles so readily.”
Ghilara’s lip twitched back, an animalistic snarl on her usually smiling face. Felassan curled back further into himself, resting his chin atop his knee. He thought back to how it had been before they’d left for the battle, Ghilara and Solas sparring each other with wide grins. They’d tired themselves out, so that when they made camp on the first night, they’d fallen asleep immediately, Ghilara’s body atop of Solas’ and his arms around his waist and his hands miraculously finding her ass even in his deep, snoring sleep.
If you looked at them now, you would think them rivals, enemies even, not lovers.
Speaking with lips curled back, Ghilara practically spat out her words, “if you take such objection to my words, maybe consider your own status as a god.”
Solas scowled, “you know my opinions on that.”
“Yet you do little to stop it! One might almost think you enjoy such things, such worship.”
It was too much. Felassan couldn’t take it when they were like this. Why couldn’t they just go back to how it had been that first night? Ghilara collapsed on top of Solas, a light snore drifting from the wolf’s mouth.
But he knew why. 200 people had died because of them, because of their decisions. Because of this war they had started, because of this battle they had said they needed to fight.
Felassan stood, and walked out of the room. His lovers were so focused on sinking their teeth into the other’s throat that they didn’t even comment as he closed the door behind him.
His back to the door, he sunk down onto the floor, head between his legs, and cried to the music of their cruel words which crept out between the cracks in the grand wood door.

Thoughts on Isobel/Aylin/Selunite!Shadowheart??
I don't mind it! Can be really good (and hot, and wholesome, and reaffirming, and heartbreaking, and everything you want it to be). My one gripe with it - and gripe is honestly much too strong a word here - is that it's in my experience usually presented from Shadowheart's POV, is a bit exclusively Shadowheart-centric and Shadowheart-focused in general, which is just not where my brain lives. So, pure personal preference and prioritisation. I tend to catch myself thinking "yes, good for you, but I want to know in great detail what Aylin and Isobel are thinking and feeling and getting out of this and how they decided to get into it in the first place and and and..."
It is also really important to me to see the two flavours of their dynamics with Shadowheart preserved, which I shall briefly summarise as:
Aylin: ho! valiant little warrior! 😃
Isobel: nasty little terrier 😏
But yeah, I enjoy seeing it as an exploration of three people whose lives have been very palpably shaped and so incredibly deeply impacted by this ancient, primordial rivalry between divine beings they've been in service to (on some sliding scale of voluntary) for so long, the conflict they've been swept up in and recruited into, and who might have a particular level of understanding of and ability to relate to each other's different perspectives and experiences with it all - or serve as often necessary contrast. Tons of fun post-game adventure possibilities, too. Then, a goldmine of bodily autonomy themes, dealing with chronic conditions, coping with having a part of your life "stolen from you," as Isobel puts it. Plus it comes prepackaged with a lot of hurt/comfort potential, and we all know how I feel about that.
Now I can't resist mentioning the OT3 that lights up my brain, and that is Aylin/Isobel/Jaheira, and I know who I'm blaming for that. Isobel/Jaheira with the "what if we were widows trapped in a small, desperate refuge in a shadow-cursed wasteland... and we kissed about it" is delicious to me, as is their scrambling to figure everything out once it turns out Aylin is actually still alive. With the bonus angst layer of one of them miraculously getting their long-lost love back while the other doesn't, and navigating that.
#left this sitting in my drafts for way too long sorry anon#oathkeeper replies to things#bg3#baldur's gate 3#dame aylin#isobel thorm

just saw your offer for book recs and would love some fantasy/sci fi books, it seems like we have similar taste. i just finished nk jemisin's broken earth trilogy, and also loved the city we became by her.
Aha, I am at work right now and thus do not have my bookshelves at hand to make sure I'm not missing something blindly obvious. However, I will start you off with these:
The Rook and Rose trilogy by M.A. Carrick (The Mask of Mirrors, The Liar's Knot, Labyrinth's Heart). Yes, this is the series I have been screaming about nonstop for the past few weeks and thus craftily suckering unsuspecting passersby into reading. An AMAZING world, an OT3 who own my entire ass, lots of political intrigue, cultural and social commentary, a unique magic system, and also plenty of humor. It really has it all. I continue my one-man quest to make this fandom bigger. Ahem.
The Green Bone trilogy by Fonda Lee (Jade City, Jade War, Jade Legacy). Another fantastic fantasy series that NEEDS more readers. Inspired by Chinese/Hong Kong kung-fu movies, set in a gritty modern universe, kind of like the Godfather but with magical jade-wielding families. Tons of discussion of empire, culture, violence, appropriation, power, war, family, Asian identity, more. They're likewise nice and long to keep you busy.
The Daevabad trilogy by S.A. Chakraborty (The City of Brass, The Kingdom of Copper, The Empire of Gold). Another you-gotta-read-this trilogy (yes, I have many of them). Set in the 18th-century Middle East and the magical djinni kingdom of Daevabad. Politics, empire, religion, history, intrigue, magic, scheming families, ancient wars, and my most beloved, Muntadhir al-Qahtani. What is not to love.
The Priory of the Orange Tree and its standalone prequel, A Day of Fallen Night, by Samantha Shannon. Absolute doorstopper (800+ pages apiece) epic-with-dragons-and-medieval-worlds fantasy, like Game of Thrones if Game of Thrones was a) good b) gay c) feminist and d) had people of color. She is also the author of the Bone Season series (four books thus far) which is a unique blend of futuristic sci-fi and fantasy set in an alternate totalitarian London and a ruined Oxford.
Winter's Orbit and Ocean's Echo by Everina Maxwell. Two M/M space opera romances (set in the same universe, but can be read independently). She got her start as a fanfic writer and it shows; these are both delightful, plotty, funny, and full of sassy gay disaster homosexuals in space.
A Memory Called Empire and A Desolation Called Peace by Arkady Martine (I have read the first one, need to read the second one). Historian of medieval Byzantium writes space opera set in Space Constantinople which is also Space Tenochtitlan. Explores language, history, memory, power, identity, assimilation, and more, and is also very funny.
Autonomous, The Future of Another Timeline, and The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz. High-concept social-commentary dystopian science fiction; of the three, Terraformers (the newest one) might be my favorite. They're not related so you can read them in whatever order.
Two books that I have not read yet but I really want to: Swim Home to the Vanished by Brendan Shay Basham and To Shape a Dragon's Breath by Moniquill Blackgoose. Both are fantasy novels by Native American authors; Basham's is magical realism and Blackgoose's is about a Native American dragon-rider facing assimilation at an English (Anglish) boarding school.
Likewise coming soon and I am excited: The Jinn-Bot of Shantiport by Samit Basu. Middle Eastern-inspired fantasy, cyberpunk, techno-magic. In space!
There are definitely more that I will get home and be like oh wait yeah. But this should get you started.

Hyacinthus Iceberg Meme EXPLAIN (P2)
Part 1 ✿ Part 2 ✿ Part 3 ✿ Part 4 ✿ Part 5
It's time for me to answer your questions about this Hyacinthus iceberg meme. There is a lot to tackle, so I'll divide it into 5 parts for the sake of my sanity.
Quick disclaimer: I am NOT an expert in Greek mythology, just a fan of Hyacinthus who wants to learn about him and anyone related to him. Most of the things I'm about to discuss are just theories and speculations of a passerby on the Internet, so do not take them as valid facts!
Apollo x Hyacinthus x Cyparissus
This OT3 has one painting made by Alexander Andreyevich Ivanov, but it's enough to convince me they are canon.
What's interesting about Hyacinthus and Cyparissus is that they are also pursued by Zephyrus, and the flower/tree they transform into after death represents mourning and sorrow.
"A young Lakonian [Hyakinthos] shook Zephyros; but he died, and the amorous Wind found young Cyparissus a consolation for Amyklaian Hyakinthos." - Nonnus, Dionysiaca
"[Apollo to Cyparissus] And the God, groaning with sorrow, said, 'You shall be mourned sincerely by me, surely as you mourn for others, and forever you shall stand in grief, where others grieve.'" - Ovid, "Metamorphoses"
Apollo x Hyacinthus x Boreas
I used to talk about this OT3 before. It's interesting because, unlike Zephyrus, Boreas seems fine with Hyacinthus dating Apollo and even dated Apollo before.
There aren't any paintings or ancient literature written explicitly about their relationship. It's more of an "if you think about it" thought.
(I won't discuss Apollo & Boreas because we will get off track, but there is a post about them for anyone interested!)
Hyacinthus' death symbolizes the vegetation wilted under the summer heat
Since Hyacinthus is assumed to be a pre-Hellenic nature god, and Apollo is the god of sunlight, we can piece together that Hyacinthus dying by Apollo is the metaphor of the plants dying under the scorching sun. This is why I said in Part 1 that Zephyrus killing Hyacinthus is a later version, and I'll say his present will ruin the myth. Having Zephyrus (the wind) as the "real" culprit will erase the original symbolism of the sun killing the plants.
(Sorry for hating you all this time, Zeph. You are in the clear now.)
Back to the main point.
Georg Friedrich Schömann seems to coin this theory in his book "Griechische Alterthümer" (1855), or he's only popularizing an existing theory. At least, that is the reference I get from the two of the sources I read.
(Hellenica World, "Hyacinthia")
(Michael Pettersson, "Cults of Apollo at Sparta: The Hyakinthia, the Gymnopaidai, and the Karneia")
Pettersson's essay also mentions G. F. Unger, another author who supports the theory.
Or we can take a step further and say this myth is about one god usurping another. As I said, Hyacinthus is a god worshipped in Amyclae long before the arrival of Apollo, so it's not a stretch to say his death at Apollo's hands also metaphorizes his cult getting replaced by Apollo's cult. It's the same as Apollo killing and replacing the Python as the patron of Delphi.
(Damian Pierzak, "The Case of Apollo and Hyacinth in the 'Second Tetralogy' Attributed to Antiphon")
However, there is one thing that I haven't understood.
In the myths, once Apollo killed the Python, he took over the Delphin temple for good. But in the case of Hyacinthus, Apollo is said to mourn Hyacinthus greatly and later revive him from death. He even shared the Hyacinthia festival and Amyclean shrine with Hyacinthus, with his statue built on top of Hyacinthus' tomb)
Is there a historical event that made the people worship both gods together instead of replacing one with another? Or are Apollo and Hyacinthus' joint worship an eventual thing? We'll never know for sure.
Hyacinthus is resurrected + Hyacinthus represents the death and rebirth cycle of nature
Hyacinthus' resurrection is like the hidden ending most people are unaware of, but it's a thing. No, we are not making it up because there are legit records and studies about it.
(Pausanias, "Description of Greece")
(Nonnus, "Dionysiaca")
(Angeliki Petropoulou, "Hyakinthos and Apollo of Amyklai: Identities and Cults A Reconsideration of the Written Evidence")
From here, we can assume that Hyacinthus' death and resurrection is the allegory for the cycle of plant life and death, like how Persephone descending to and ascending from the Underworld is the allegory for season change.
However, I only draw this conclusion from mythology blogs. Few ancient poets and professional scholars seem to talk about this theme of Hyacinthus.
As of now, I've only got these two sources that slightly discuss it:
(Ovid, "Metamorphoses")
Ovid's version is debatable because Hyacinthus still remains dead in his story. We can argue that Hyacinthus still "lives on" in the form of the flower, but it won't align with Hyacinthus' resurrection in the myths.
(Damian Pierzak, "The Case of Apollo and Hyacinth in the 'Second Tetralogy' Attributed to Antiphon")
Again, Mr. Pierzak cites Ovid's retelling when he mentions the "Hyacinthus is connected to nature's rebirth" theory.
I'm still looking for more accounts (both from ancient Greek and scholarly research) where Hyacinthus is fully revived and symbolizes the plants' cycle. If anyone has anything, please let me know! I would love to read more!
The Hyacinthia festival
The Hyacinthia festival is confirmed not only in mythology but also in history.
(Michael Pettersson, "Cults of Apollo at Sparta: The Hyakinthia, the Gymnopaidai, and the Karneia")
(Pausanias, "Description of Greece")
Until now, people are still studying about this ancient festival.
(Angeliki Petropoulou, "Hyakinthos and Apollo of Amyklai: Identities and Cults A Reconsideration of the Written Evidence")
I will talk about the Hyacinthia's rituals, practices, history, etc., but then we'll be here until next summer. So, I recommend everyone check out this post made by a Paganist for a deeper study.
