Something is happening in México´s art world

The contemporary argentine artist Ana Gallardo exhibited a piece at the University Museum of Contemporary Art (MUAC) in México. The exhibition, titled "Tembló acá un delirio", featured the work Extracto de un Proyecto Fallido , where Gallardo visited Casa Xochiquetzal, a shelter in Tepito for elderly sex workers in vulnerable situations. The controversial piece consisted of a large wall where she wrote about her experience going to the house, where she was asked to care for one of the residents in a deplorable state, written with slurs and derogatory language toward the shelter, the sex workers, and Estela, the woman she "cared" for. The text is dehumanizing, degrading, and, to top it off, she projects a video where she caresses Estela's hands, as if she were a religious figure holding a sick child for a photo-op. We don’t know, and the most probable answer is no, if Estela consented to have her image used in such a vile and cruel manner.

The most foolish people try to defend these atrocities by saying it's art, claiming it opens up a conversation, or that it qualifies as art because it generates a reaction, in this case, a disgusting one. Humans feel and react to all stimuli in more or less conscious ways, of course injustice generates a reaction, as do crimes, but that doesn’t make them art. Not everything that happens in a museum is art, and just because a video is projected doesn’t make it a work of art, no matter how much it's accompanied by curatorial text. It is not art, it is abuse.

In the wake of the exhibit, there were protests at the museum, demanding respect for sex workers and calling for an end to discrimination. The piece has since been removed, and the museum remains closed, likely to avoid further protests. The exhibition has been permanently removed down and the museum has not yet issued an apology after the scandal, but why let it get to that point? Who authorized this exhibit? Did they not read the supposed work, which is nothing more than a message of hatred and contempt? How much more can we exploit a person’s suffering and agony, displaying them in their most fragile condition just to provoke shock and hide behind the rhetoric of contemporary art?

Jennifer Hermoso not being called up either is fucking bs. She sends a clear message to the players “Be quiet.”. She’s gradually removing players who spoke out.

at this moment tbh I am super aruani focused... but I've shipped a lot through my life haha when I was a child I was obsessed with TK + Kari (digimon) and I usually shipped my fav character from anything, which usually was the misfit / weird / nerd one (I still do btw) 😅 Some ships that I also like at this moment could be zutara, bubbline, tomgreg from succession (in a fun way tbh), OBVIOUSLY tayley from paramore but they are real people so..... Ana Gallardo es una artista política. Desde este posicionamiento, disputa los sentidos ortodoxos de esa categoría en el arte contemporáneo. Su obra se acerca de manera temprana a reflexiones que, en la actualidad, se insertan en los feminismos y las teorías de género. Obras hechas con casi nada o con todo lo que está alrededor: su producción se manifiesta en diversos soportes, frágiles e inestables que potencian la práctica y la identidad de la artista.

Tembló acá un delirio, su exposición en el Museo CA2M, no se presenta como una retrospectiva. Propone una deriva de muchas posibles, una bitácora de los rodeos de Ana Gallardo por el Sur global y sus geografías de violencia necropolítica y extractivistas. La dimensión autobiográfica de la exposición no se encierra en el teatro del yo, sino que expone los límites de toda experiencia subjetiva. Que la práctica artística se conciba como tecnología de auto-conocimiento y apoyo mutuo, gracias a la participación de un elenco de voces que, como en Antígona de Sófocles, forman familia por fuera de los lazos sanguíneos, contribuye a crear una zona de continuidad donde la crítica de la subyugación -por motivos de raza, sexo, edad, clase y otras formas de represión-, como un terremoto, tiene su réplica en la defensa de los territorios.

Ana Gallardo is a political artist, and, as such, disputes the conventional meaning of this category in contemporary art. Even early on, her work explored ideas that, today, are embedded in feminism and gender theories. Pieces made with almost nothing or with everything that is around: her output is expressed in diverse, fragile and unstable mediums that enhance the artist’s creative practice and identity.

Here trembled a delirium, here exhibition at Museum CA2M, is not a retrospective. It is one of the many possible journeys through Ana Gallardo’s output, a diary of her movements around the global South and its geographies of necropolitical violence and extractivism. The autobiographical side of the exhibition is not confined to the theatre of the self, but rather it exposes the limits of all subjective experience. Here, artistic practice is conceived of as a technique for getting to know oneself and for mutual support, thanks to the participation of a whole cast of voices that, as in Sophocles’ Antigone, form a family bound not by blood ties; in turn, this helps create an area of continuity in which the critique of subjugation — because of race, sex, age, class and other forms of repression — just like an earthquake, has aftershocks in the defence of territories.
