honestly all this talk of that god awful new norm cartoon is reminding me of that horrendous 90's sitcom i watched a few years ago, unhappily ever after, probably because both are right-wing trash.
at least unhappily ever after pretends to be an entertaining sitcom... not that it succeeds.
the new norm's just a never-ending series of jokes shitting on minorities without even trying to pretend it has a plot.
#and don't even get me started on how creepy uea is about the daughter character#like that shit legit deserves a tw for how fucked up it is#honestly i just stayed for the homoerotic tension between the bobcat goldthwait bunny and the sexually repressed dad#(or at least sexually repressed when it comes to his latent bisexuality)#the new norm#new norm#unhappily ever after#uea

going to a comedy open mic tomorrow mostly to watch my friends (it's at a cool venue that my improv troupe performs at once a month and a few improv troupe friends are doing standup there) but when these friends were asking if i'd be interested in coming they were like "btw there's usually a ton of open spots on show days if YOU want to do something... and they're not strict about it only being standup either, people have done character pieces and sketches etc like they embrace the weirdness... and they're not strict about time limits you could probably do anything between three and eight minutes... sometimes if there's not enough people signed up they'll even let you go twice..." and i'm like god damn it i thought i was gonna take a break from aubrey but this setup is like tailor made for an aubrey appearance lmao
#still on the fence about it bc the burnout i experienced at the beginning of may extended to aubrey#especially bc so much of my aubrey stuff is comedy about gender and my brain was more in ''set everything on fire'' mode#and i think i've gotten to a good place with that burnout but i still haven't worked on any aubrey stuff since i got home from college#but even still even tho my mental health is better than it was a few weeks ago#recently i have had this horrible insomnia where i haven't been able to fall asleep at night in over a week#(i've made up for it with naps but still i am not mentally 100% rn. i've tried so many things and nothing has worked.)#so that's my justification for *not* doing aubrey tomorrow. however.#i reeeally need to get more performance experience bc there's only so much you can develop a sketch character without performing them#and this venue is so good. it's an art gallery like an hour away that's designed to be part gallery and part performance venue#especially for comedy. like the venue owner is this veteran comedian who used to work with bobcat goldthwait and a lot of other big names#and it's a low-pressure environment bc everyone there has seen me do comedy before with my improv troupe#but they still haven't seen me do aubrey at all so it's bringing a new side of my comedy to some of my main collaborators#like this is so much better than my previous aubrey performances bc they were all either#1. shows in CLASSROOMS with a bunch of my classmates who generally don't get my comedy (very clique-ish)#or 2. a guest spot on a show at a coffee shop where everyone knew each other except me#plus the biggest thing for me is the lack of a strict time limit. like as much as having a good 3-minute monologue can be#i think aubrey is a character you need to get to know a bit longer than 3 minutes. and a lot of my stuff is long while also being very tigh#like not every monologue is like this but my best aubrey monologues are almost like aubrey is telling you a sitcom storyline#and removing too many lines makes the whole narrative jenga tower fall over#and as much as i want to figure out how to make every monologue a good starting point#having the chance to perform multiple monologues if i get to go twice so that they can build off each other would be perfect#idk i'm not sure how often the open mics are there. at least monthly tho i might be missing next month's depending on when i'm in toronto#so like this wouldn't really be my only chance. but yeah i'm on the fence about whether to bring aubrey back for a performance tomorrow#i probably wouldn't do new material. i'd do the 5 minute version of my uncle reg monologue bc it's the one that's worked best so far#and if i get to do multiple. maybe i'd do the ''nom de plum'' monologue bc i think it's also very strong#and it has a good callback to uncle reg#but idk i also think doing the song would be very fun and on-theme since it's pride month and the song is a satire of rainbow capitalism#tho i'd probably have to rework the monologue that leads into the song bc even tho i loved the concept i don't think i articulated it well#or i could write an entirely different lead-in and make the previous monologue (''C/H/M'') a separate thing to revise later#which would probably go better and somehow be less work to write. but even so i don't know what the venue's sound setup is

An Evening with Bobcat Goldthwait: Share the Warmth (1987)
I have no idea how I wound up with a copy of An Evening with Bobcat Goldthwait – Share the Warmth on VHS, but it’s April Fool’s Day and I watched it, so here are my thoughts. Humor - perhaps more than any other subject - is subjective, which makes me feel weird about reviewing this special but what can I say? I laughed a few times but not many.
With his distinct voice, strange mannerisms and unique mix of political & black comedy, Robert Francis “Bobcat” Goldthwait is probably best known for writing and directing Shakes the Clown (1991), Sleeping Dogs Lie (2006) and World’s Greatest Dad (2009). If you want to know how he got started, this recording of his live stand-up is just the ticket.
I’ll give it to Bobcat. He’s memorable. The man’s got huge presence, plenty of energy and once you hear that ear-piercing screech of a voice, you will not mistake him for anyone else. The man’s got some good material. There’s a joke about twinkies that made me laugh pretty hard and even when I didn’t, you can tell seeing him in person would’ve been something. He’s practically bouncing off the walls; he’s fearless! And there’s no way to tell if he is playing it up, or really just that nuts.
This is straightforward program – aside from all the running and climbing around – so what really matters is not the cinematography, but the humor. It didn’t work for me. At 54 minutes, the tape feels long; borderline intolerable at times. That doesn't mean I hold any ill will towards the man. This special was shot way, way back. Since, some of the humor has become dated (I didn’t even know who or what event he was referring to a few times) and the muddy, scratchy sound of the VHS tape I watched certainly didn’t help. If you’re a fan of his, this is probably worth checking out. If you’re not, you’d have never heard of this special anyway.
Often tedious and more grating than funny, An Evening with Bobcat Goldthwait wasn’t my cup of tea. I could tell from the first few minutes, which sort of makes writing about it feel like a waste of time, but what else was I supposed to do? Not contribute to the blog? If you’re out there Bobcat, I wish you luck. No hard feelings. This special just didn’t float my boat. (On VHS, April 1, 2018)

The stern, disappointed, determined look I'm practicing when passing the traitors who're still wearing their TRUMP/VANCE 2024 SAVE AMERICA gear in public. Like today at the grocery store when I passed a man wearing the regalia whilst looking like Bobcat Goldthwait's character in Police Academy.
What's weird is how ANGRY they all still are. They seek to punish, to separate, to scapegoat and to justify their baseless anger. People who "win" are not this angry unless they have awful, deliberately hurtful work ahead of them. And they're fucking stupid. And they will deserve having been duped by someone so obviously dumb and evil, utterly lacking in charisma or even diction. He's charismatic if you're a mediocre white man, or lack sufficient understanding of the language of veteran charlatans. And he didn't even have THAT after all of it.
Pray for a miracle. Enjoy the next 2 months. And then be prepared to be a cockroach, a creature who doesn't need air or water, a tardigrade. Look out for one another. Don't trust the capitulation of the corporate media, owned by billionaires. Don't be prepared to forgive, even as understanding dawns on the smarter ones. Open minds, open hearts, but forever on your guard. Soviet villages had KGB agents EVERYWHERE, and it's okay to be a little paranoid.
And, listen...the least helpful thing on God's earth right now is going "the democrats picked an untested woman!" or "her campaign sucked!" She ran a note-perfect campaign. The other guy literally swayed like a shack with no windows in a hurricane listening to "Ave Maria" and "YMCA" for 40 minutes. He abandoned them in the Coachella desert and blathered about sharks and low-flush toilets and Hannibal Lector. Smart people don't vote for that. Focus on what to do next.
And what to do now. I'm having pizza and soda and listening to my favorite music, spraying for ants and moving garbage around.
Be good. Be chaotic good in the world. Hope isn't here, but it's somewhere, and I'm determined to find it.

Random Cartoon Network anon what do you think about The Moxy Show ? I think it's nuts a majority of Cartoon Network's first show is lost media ⭐
OMG, this is a GREAT question.
First of all with media like this, I'm always like....HOW!! How the hell do you lose 24 EPISODES of a cartoon!!! Didn't you archive that stuff??? Regardless of its popularity, you'd think it'd be archived!!
Also, even though the animation in it is, well, not that great (like, Toy Story released around the time it did and looks LEAGUES better, but to be fair it's a feature length film), it's still super impressive to me because it's one of the first TV shows to use real time animation and that was super new and ahead of it's time for 1993.
It also had a BUNCH of huge names on it?? Like, Penn Jillette from PENN & TELLER??? Bobcat Goldthwait?? CHRIS ROCK?????
I know that a lot of people hate the style of it, but I think the style of Moxy is super cute/cool, I love his big ol' head and the way it's usually sideways.
But also (I know I've said also a lot, LOL), CN presumably is okay enough with acknowledging that it exists because...it has a crossover/reference in an episode of OK K.O.???? I think the episode is called Crossover Nexus, I'd have to check. It wasn't ever a celebrated show by CN, but they're not hiding it either, so...you'd imagine they might still have it somewhere??
It really pains my heart to think of how much lost media does exist, not just "out there" in some random place or in some random person's home, but directly AT the places that made it, produced it, aired it, published it, etc.! Just that they're NOT sharing it and keeping it! I feel like it's a moral duty and obligation to archive works.
The Moxy Show is just...definitely a very bizarre show, from what we know about it though. Its plotlines seem to be very odd as well as its mix of live action and CGI. It's also just odd comedically as well. But I suppose a lot of old cartoons can be like that.
CN in general has a really interesting history and how it has shaped "Western" cartoons and by proxy cartoons across the world really fascinates me, for better or for worse.
But yeah, I can't get over how you could lose an ENTIRE SHOW that's on CN. Like, I don't get how you could do it for any show in the first place! (I mean, I do get it and understand the reasons, but I always feel like it's a preventable tragedy.) But, like, a show on THE Cartoon Network?? It's crazy.
All in all, I think it's a fascinating case of lost media and I find its style really charming, even if most people don't and even if it's quite aged.

“Freaked” (1993)
-this surreal comedy tries several gambles that usually land the hopeful flat on their face…but pulls it off. With style and whimsy.
-among the daring leaps; having several extremely different effects houses and their work appear coherent, the hilarious merciless beating of a child, and the non stop explosive energy that comes off as exceedingly charming (not tiring)
-bravo to Alex Winter and Tom Stern
-I further love how they play lead Ricky Coogin as the most unlikeable piece of shit. Really laying it on thick, so his comeuppance hits strong
+it also helps that Winter has a puppy dog charm underneath
-Randy Quaid gives a sizzling performance (aided by over the top appearance the costume and makeup department must have loved)
-the way he reads and parses “styrofoam cup” just had me in stitches
-Winter & Stern get wonderful comedic performances out people not necessarily thought of as funny; Brooke Shiekds, Mr. T, Bobcat Goldthwait, and so forth
-they even get my 2nd favorite joke out of a hammer
-the effects are truly incredible, and the motifs of the film allows us the audience to roll with five different studios providing them
-what I find most beguiling is how manic the energy of this film is, but it never out wears its welcome or becomes a chore. I seriously do not know how they did that
-finally, mother of mercy, the sheer shit kicking Stuey Gluck (played by actor Alex Zuckerman) takes is ray of sunshine on my heart. Everything about it gets progressively more absurd and even funnier
-this is a film that clearly got re-edited against the filmmakers wishes; but even in its compromised form it provides some of the biggest belly laughs in recent memories. It is gross, preposterous and most of all utterly hilarious.

The other thing worth mentioning with space ghost continuity is a wildcard even on Space Ghost standards. C2C shares a countuity with The Moxy Show, a mostly lost media CGI/mixed media series that was the first cartoon network original cartoon. Both shows lack a 4th wall about their presence on the cartoon network, have physical miniature model backgrounds, and Moxy & SG were shown as friends in CN advertising from the time
Oh yeah, I've seen images of The Moxy Show before, I honestly love Moxy's design from what I've seen (plus he was voiced by motherfucking Bobcat Goldthwait, I LOVED his segment in Part Legends)!
But yeah, I honestly LOVE media that just says "Fuck You!" to the 4th Wall and kicks its asshole inwards so these are fun to think about!
Thank you once again for the great info my sweet friend o mine! I hope you have a great and wonderful day!!

Random Cartoon Network anon what do you think about The Moxy Show ? I think it's nuts a majority of Cartoon Network's first show is lost media 📺
a very fascinating little thing!! it was a little before my time (or, just in it; it stopped airing when I was 1 haha), so sadly I've never seen it in full, but I'm a big fan of when media's in its "throw anything at the wall and see what sticks" era - the explosion of creativity a new platform or even art form breeds before it gets bogged down by expectations and profitability leads to so much fun experimentation, and even if the results seem a little crude even by a few years later and often hit or miss in hindsight, there's always a lot to admire about the process.
aesthetically it's pretty appealing even if super janky and dated; it oozes '90s alternative MTV influence. maybe it's down to it being so prominent a style in my formative years, but I'm fond of stuff that goes for the bizarro, wonky forced perspective kinda look. the early motion capture is a cool choice too bc it gives the show this kind of like, uncanny puppet movement. also I like bobcat goldthwait's weird voice so that's endearing.
it's strange to think of something so firmly established in the animation world now as cartoon network starting off with, actually, not that much original material. really more of a spot to showcase old cartoons, and moxy almost worked as their border between in that short period.
honestly it's soo sad isn't it tho like, this is why archives are so important. vital milestones being lost to the ether is heartbreaking. BUT don't these episodes apparently still exist and the creator's shown interest in remastering them? so. 👀
#also I've still never really seen much of ok ko but I love that its creators paid little homages to this and also ghoul school#and had that cartoon cartoons transformation sequence. exactly the kind of stuff I'd be doing if I ran a cartoon show lmao#asks

god I love that interview with noel fielding and bobcat goldthwait where noel gets him to talk about being friends with bowie in the 80s and he’s talking about seeing him out one night during the labyrinth shoot drunk out of his mind one night like “it’s fucking puppets man” and also the fact they only even met to begin with because bowie left a drunk rambling three am voice message on his answering machine that was like “I love you I love you” that he just assumed was one of his friends playing a joke on him until he got a call from bowie in the morning

“Pain and Panic cannot sing.”
Meanwhile, their VAs:
#🌠#Video Post#Bobcat Goldthwait#Matt Frewer#Inspired by an actual comment I saw regarding Pain and Panic singing the song “The Kronos Stone”.#Someone really listened to that fun and amazing mini-villain song and said that they cannot sing.#Yeeeah... sure Jan.🙄#Singing takes time and practice. Singing with a voice different from your own takes even more time and practice.#Bobcat and Matt very clearly put a lot of time - practice - and love into making their performance just right...#... and I well and truly believe they succeeded on that front.#Matt delivered a perfect combination of playful tone and vibrant vibrato...#... on top of maintaining the higher register of Panic's voice. Bobcat maintained a solid melody...#... and harmonized wonderfully with Matt while still maintaining the signature shrill raspy tone of Pain's voice.#IMHO a person truly cannot sing if they are absolutely incapable of holding a melody. These two...#... can - and they did it very well.#Pain and Panic can indeed sing - and it's thanks to two very dedicated VAs.🌟

It's time for Beginnings, the podcast where writer and performer Andy Beckerman talks to the comedians, writers, filmmakers and musicians he admires about their earliest creative experiences and the numerous ways in which a creative life can unfold.
On today's episode, I talk to comedian and director Bobcat Goldthwait. Originally from Syracuse, Bobcat's career is so full of hyphens that "multihyphenate" doesn't even scratch the surface. From acting in films like Police Academy and Scrooged to directing TV for shows like Community and Jimmy Kimmel to directing comedy specials for folks like Marc Maron and Patton Oswalt to directing his own films like World's Greatest Dad and God Bless America. But since the start of his career, Bobcat has been a stand-up. His special with Dana Gould Joy Ride was released in 2021 and his latest album Soldier for Christ was just released at the end of April by Pretty Good Friends, and it is great!
I'm on Twitter here and you can get the show with:

Space Ghost Week
Wherein we cover an entire season of Space Ghost Coast to Coast over the course of a week
Space Ghost Coast to Coast #37: “Anniversary” | August 8, 1997 | S04E04
The 37th episode anniversary special! YEARS before The Simpsons did their 138th episode special! Well, actually I just did some googling and I guess this came after. But it was still YEARS after. Let it be known, the “years” part of that statement was still correct.
This is another solid episode featuring two or three return guests, if Chad counts. If he does, lord help you and your wicked heart. He should never count, for he is bearded. Judy Tenuta and Bobcat Goldthwait return and Space Ghost finds that it’s not all it’s cracked up to be. He’s very disappointed with these guests, even though they both sing for him. Judy does a very selfless thing by exclaiming “look at this!” before jutting her crotch out towards the camera before sitting back down in her chair. What a sport. May she rest in peace (she died recently! That sucks!).
This episode has a very memorable bit at the end where they roll a “best of” clip package that’s just clips of Space Ghost being brutalized from his old action show. There is also a disgusting display of anti-French bigotry, very on brand for writer Evan Dorkin (Sarah Dyer also wrote this, but probably wrote all the nice, non-rude jokes, I’m guessing)
MAIL BAG
Since my queue is more rapid during Space Ghost week, the Mail Bag will probably only happen once every few posts. I’m giving preference to the more timely messages, as always:
mattpanreblogsstuff writes:
"Rehearsal" is a special episode for me in that it was one of the first episodes of Tad I had watched. I bought volumes 2 and 3 at a pawnshop when I was 12, and in my first sitting was "Rehearsal". I wasn't fully devoted to SG quite yet but I was still getting pretty engaged.
Also yes, RIP Clay. I always considered him to be a *co*-creator of C2C because he contributed so much to the show and helped make it work. Motherfucker talent, shame he passed away.
Really terrible and senseless the way he passed, and it sounds like he was not treated too well by Cartoon Network. He left behind a great legacy for sure, but if you haven’t seen his old YouTube channel, it’s worth checking out! Lotsa good ephemera in there.
iirc Gallagher actually does come up in the unedited bob & David interview that's on the DVD. I forget why. They fib that they smash watermelons as part of their act I think
I actually did watch this but I was a little distracted so it’s actually highly likely I missed this. But! I did catch a line that was reused in BooBooKitty. Stay tuned for that.
