Have you ever wondered what an alternate America would be like if Hippos ruled the Mississippi River?
Well, I’m about to find out.

Why does the American Hippo duology (River of Teeth & Taste of Marrow) not have a massive, active fandom?? It’s hands down my favorite read this year. It’s an alternate history story and because of the feral hippos reads like a Quentin Tarantino movie with Oceans 11 heist vibes but make it western.
It’s the queerest, most violent, and most insanely fun thing I’ve read this’d year, and maybe ever.
It’s quirky as hell, the characters are amazing. A casually bisexual out for revenge, a fat French con artist who is the best at what she does, an explosives/poison expert badass enby/ the world’s greatest assassin who’s been MIA for a while with a big surprise when she shows back up for the heist (just don’t call it a caper! Lol)
It’s just so freaking FUN. I need there to be a fandom y’all. I need the art and the fics and the meta and people to hyperfixate about it with me. So. Go read River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow (or get both together, titled American Hippo) by Sarah Gailey.
Then talk to me about it!!

hii Mo, happy STS!! I'm curious to know about your recent reads - what was your favorite book/short story/screenplay/whatever that you've read this year? any that disappointed you (feel free to ignore if you don't wanna spill any tea lol)? or, if you haven't read anything, first, I see you, and second, any book you'd particularly like to get your hands on?
Hi Cee! Happy STS, and thanks for the ask!
I've not had as much time to read recently, as I'd like, due to taking night classes. (Which are, thankfully, almost over!!!)
I think my absolute favourite book that I've read this year was "American Hippo" by Sarah Gailey. It's a novella which contains three (if I remember correctly) short stories set in an alternate American history. Instead of cowboys, they have hoppers; people who wrangle hippos.
The characters were so well-written, the plot engaging, and who doesn't love hippos?! (It's pretty violent at times, but mostly because hippos are...well, hippos!)
Another book I really enjoyed was "Hench" by Natalie Zina Walschots. It was a fun read, which looked at the superhero genre from the eyes of the henchmen. It was engaging, with a strong plot and characters, whilst asking some pretty dark questions about morality.
I was a beta reader for @surroundedbypearls novel, "The Wildfire King" which was just awesome. Such a great story and I'm super privileged to have been able to have a sneak peek ahead of everyone else!
I have two of @scifimagpie's stories that I'm beta-ing and aim to start in the new year. I can't wait !!
I've very nicely asked Santa for Network Effect by Martha Wells, as I've heard good things about Murderbot ( thanks booklr !) So I'm hoping to start next year engrossed in books to make up for lost time!!

queer books for pride month: day 28
American Hippo- Sarah Gailey
Genre: alternative history LGBTQ+ Rep: Bi MC, nonbinary MC, mlx relationship CW: death, guns, gore, alcohol, animal death, fire
Plot: In an America that never was, the US government introduced herds of hippos to the marshlands to be bred and slaughtered for meat. What they failed to take into account was the sheer strength and brutality of these animals. Now, Wilslow Houndstooth, a hippo rider, has been contracted to reclaim these marshlands.
Why I'd recommend this series: This is such a short, fast-paced collection of novellas and short stories. I'd highly recommend it for anyone who (like me) struggles with focussing on a book for too long. It's creative, it's exciting, and it's gory. Hippo cowboys (hippoboys?), what more could you ask for?

American Hippo contains the novellas River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow by Sarah Gailey.
I am always recommending these books and so grateful that they were recommended to me. This story was so much fun and the characters are fantastic. Set in a version of 1890's America where hippos were imported to the Mississippi. Think western but with hippos instead of horses/cattle.

For a fictional take on what the US could've been like if this bill pushed through, I highly recommend Sarah Gailey's American Hippo, which collects the novellas River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow in one volume.

American Hippo (River of Teeth and Taste of Marrow) by Sarah Gailey are books I think about CONSTANTLY but at the same time? I read them so fast, have mixed feelings, wish they were longer but know I'm not compatible with Gailey's work so unsure if I'd like it to be longer (Magic for Liars mmm). I'm so conflicted! Ahhhh

Hero let themself smile as they sat across from Houndstooth and began studying the map. This would be more fun than retirement.

American Hippo Fandom Discord
This fandom is so underrated it's criminal. By popular demand (I suggested it and one person said do it), I have made a discord. Anticipate unhinged rambling, and hopefully fanfiction and fanart! https://discord.gg/BYXKhDYut7
