National Bird Day
Don your binoculars to spy these feathered friends in the wild, contribute to conservation efforts or raise awareness of birds in captivity.
The world is filled with a plethora of different species of birds. From cardinals to doves, from parakeets to parrots. Different people have different relationships with the various species of birds. As such, one could easily imagine that there could actually be numerous National Bird Days in the world, serving different purposes and perhaps varying by region.
What this day refers to, however, is known as National Bird Day, observed primarily in the United States. This is a bit different from occasions such as International Migratory National Bird Day, World Migratory National Bird Day, National Bird Day (UK), and several other National Bird Days which do not follow the same etymology as “turkey day”.
It is also worth noting that each of these is named for those avian friends, not the late Senator Robert Byrd!
The ‘National’ term might be a bit deceptive here, since it’s not actually a national holiday in the United States. For a day to technically be a national holiday, an Act of Congress is required, and there is no evidence that has ever happened. That being said, this delightful day is still popularly known as National Bird Day, regardless of whatever Congress might think of that.
So get ready to learn about and celebrate National Bird Day!
History of National Bird Day
Back in 1894, Charles Almanzo Babcock, the superintendent of schools in Oil City, Pennsylvania, declared the first holiday in the United States to celebrate birds. Babcock was passionate about the idea of advancing bird conservation as a moral value and it seems that his idea for the day caught on. Babcock’s National Bird Day eventually turned into what is now known as International Migratory National Bird Day, which is celebrated in May.
That day is not actually related to this National Bird Day, though, in terms of history. This particular version of National Bird Day was created as it marked the end of the annual Christmas Bird Count in the mid-21st century.
National Bird Day has been dedicated at least in part to raising awareness about birds that are held in captivity. This day is a project of the Avian Welfare Coalition, which works hard to raise awareness for birds that are captured or produced in captivity for either profit or amusement of humans.
Presumably that includes Aunt Marjorie’s parrot, the penguins in the Columbus Zoo, and that turkey that made the ultimate sacrifice to grace the family’s dinner table for Thanksgiving back in November. After all, a holiday that marks the end of three weeks of focusing on wild birds that occurs during the Christmas Bird Count would appropriately focus some attention on captive birds.
The goal of the day is to educate folks on the destructive tendencies of the bird trade, the cruelty of bird breeding mills, and ideas for helping and improving the lives of birds that are already living in captivity.
How to Celebrate National Bird Day
Looking for ideas on how to celebrate National Bird Day? Well this list is a great way to begin. Try out some of these ideas or come up with some of your own:
Learn More About Birds
Birds are important for a variety of reasons. They are a valuable part of nature’s ecosystem. Many of them sing and quite a few of them even look pretty! Of course, many species of birds are also eaten by humans, but it does seem that it might be a little inappropriate to go quail hunting in honour of National Bird Day, no matter how delicious quail might be.
Visit Unique Birds in Their Natural Habitats
Forgo the zoo and head on over to places where the birds actually live and thrive in their natural habitats. For some bird lovers, this could simply mean taking a walk in the forest with some bird watching glasses to spot some unique creatures.
For others, this might mean building an entire vacation to an exotic place to see tropical birds in their natural homes. Many different Eco-tour companies will offer limited viewing opportunities for those who want to travel around the world to see parrots in Guatemala, Tenerife, Belize, Honduras and more!
Help with Bird Conservation
Raising awareness, getting involved and making a donation are all ways that bird lovers can celebrate National Bird Day. Host a charity event or party to let friends and family enjoy an evening while learning about the important reasons behind National Bird Day. Get together for a meal, watch a documentary, and then let people know about these ways they can make a donation to these important support bird conservation efforts:
Indonesian Parrot Project Helping protect endangered parrots and cockatoos from trappers, smugglers, transporters and traders.
Hatched to Fly Free This organization works to breed and then release beautiful, colorful macaws in the nation of Costa Rica.
One Earth Conservation Empowering people to save the planet, this organization helps to educate and build programs to love nature, with a specific focus on parrots.
Visit the National Bird Day Website
There’s also a website at National Bird Day, for those who want to learn more about the folks who are actually promoting this day, this website is a great place to start. It’s filled with resources and information to educate adults and children about the difficulties faced by so many birds in captivity today.
Get Educated on the Risks of Bird Extinction
On a serious note, approximately 12 percent of the world’s bird species could face extinction in the next century, if things continue on as they have been. That includes nearly a third of the 330 different species of parrots.
Things don’t look a great deal better for numerous species of songbirds, not to mention some penguin species and others, like the kiwi bird. The largest components of these threats of extinction are habitat destruction and pet trade. A great idea for celebrating the day would be learning about all of the wonders of birds, then helping to educate friends and family members about their plight. Because the survival of the world’s birds hinges on public awareness as well as support for conservation efforts all over the world.

this might be a really stupid question, but i'll give it a go anyway
when people draw ducks, they tend to choose pure white ones, which i know as aylesbury ducks. is there a reason for this that you know of? i would imagine that maybe there's a lot of aylesbury ducks in america, but when i think of the quintessential duck, the duckiest duck one could say, i think of a mallard (male or female)
also, thank you very much for all the work you do on this blog, i get to send my bird friends loads of cool pictures and engage in their interests even though i know fuck all about them <|:3
White Ducks
You're welcome kumquat.
So, in the United States, most of the farm ducks, and many of the domestic ducks that are put in parks with ponds and lakes are the Peking White aka American Pekin. The original birds that became this breed came from China in the 1800s.
The Peking White is a domestic breed of the Mallard, and is a different breed from the Aylesbury (which is usually kept in the UK and other parts of Europe, along with the German Pekin). Many American Pekins have some Aylesbury genetics.
For many people who grow up seeing ducks in parks or farms, this is the quintessential appearance for a duck.
The aforementioned are just a few domestic varieties of mallard.

James and Sofia meet their still-unhatched little cousins for the first time! They already can't wait to play with them :)
ID in alt and under cut
[ID
A colored half-body digital doodle of James and Sofia Whitefeather, the artist's Ducktales 2017 OCs. In the drawing they're both 12 years old.
James and Sofia are American Pekin ducks. James has curly hair, curly feathers on his cheeks and freckles on his face, his eyes are brown. Sofia has shoulder-length hair tied into two ponytails with blue bows, her eyes are blue. James is wearing a white checked shirt and ochre shorts with suspenders. Sofia is wearing a white sweater and a blue jumper skirt with a white check pattern.
There are three speech bubbles above them.
Sofia asks, «I wonder what they will be like? Will they be like auntie Isa? Do you think they'll like us?»
James replies, «Well, they'll definitely like you.»
To this Sofia says, «I hope so! I can't wait for them to hatch!!»
James and Sofia are both standing facing the viewer, with a round baby crib in front of them with two greenish-blue eggs in it. Sofia looks at the eggs happily, her palms on the edge of the crib, her beak open. James smiles at Sofia, one of his hands also on the edge of the crib, and his other hand touches one of the eggs.

What are your favourite kinds of ducky?
Top 3 favorite duckies are king eider, black bellied whistling duck, and the american pekin
Eiders and Pekins (and call ducks) are tied for 1st...eiders are my fancy pick, pekins (and white call ducks) are like the universal image of a ducky...u can find him anywhere and its always a delight... there's just something about a "plain" white duck that overwhelms me with joy...if i talk about ducks its usually about them
#skunk mail#anonymous#remember last year (?) when there was a duck poll competition and i singlehandedly got king eiders to 2nd place LMAO#i blocked someone for hating on them.#ducky tag

Sakai is coming up a lot more recently on here so I’d like to bring up a passage from his interview ‘when race burns class’:
A number of years ago, i was trying to help a group of young Chinese-American activists on an anti-racist campaign. This was an interesting case of how a pure "race" issue only fronted for class politics. Now, these folks were "paper Maoists" in every worst way you could think of – and all my friends know that i'm someone who has warm feelings for the old Chairman. Not only did they have what Mao once called "invincible ignorance", but were also arrogantly full of Han nationalism. They did have physical courage, at least. Their project was to protest the sports racism in the famous industrial town of Pekin, Illinois – which was originally named in the 19th century after Beijing, and whose high school sports teams were colorfully named "the Chinks"! (capitalism, what an ever-amazing civilization – what next? "Auschwitz! The Perfume!" ).
Every week a few carloads of young Asian protesters would arrive in Pekin to picket the high school and city hall, hold television news conferences, and keep the issue simmering in the news. You see, the small flaw in the campaign was that all the protesters had to be imported from New York and Chicago. There were only eight Chinese families in town, and all were refusing to have anything to do with the anti-"Chinks" campaign (not wanting to lose their livelihoods, homes, and be driven out of town by the controversy).
By accident, not in any political way, i had casually met two vaguely liberal young white guys there. One was a teacher in that very high school. The second was a UAW (United Auto Workers union) shop steward at the nearby giant Caterpillar tractor assembly plant, which was Pekin's main industry. So i thought maybe they could be persuaded to get some local people to take a moderate wishy-washy public stand, anything just to give the Chinese families some local community cover if they wanted to speak out (there was zero local support of any kind, including all the unions and churches of course).
When i suggested it to this Maoist group, there was a moment's startled stony silence. Then the leader barked, "We do not work with white people!" Discussion over. So, is this a good example of that error of "racial issues taking precedence over class issues"? i know some radicals might think that, but they'd just be getting faked out.
First off, to those activists running it, "race" was not what was central to their thinking. After all, if those Asian American dudes had really been into either "race" or anti-racism they might have started by organizing and working with the local Asian families. They might have tried to help find some survival strategy for these families, who couldn't just drive off into the sunset after each press conference (being an isolated Asian family in a heavy white racist scene is no joke, obviously). This is just a normal problem in anti-racist work, which folks had to deal with all the time in small towns in 1960s Mississippi, for instance.
It also wasn't true that those Chinese-American leftists "didn't work with white people". They did that all the time, when they wanted, and these Han nationalists even argued for the "revolutionary" nature of the white working class . What i came to realize was in that situation they didn't want any broad community support for the Chinese families there, or to let others into "their" issue. Because they had a really different agenda. Which was to get sole public credit for this and other anti-racist issues, so that their little Maoist "party" could vault into political dominance over the Chinese-American communities. Later, when they thought it necessary, they even used physical violence and death threats to drive other Asian groups away. They intended to be the people in ethnic power, in effect like replacing the tongs . These "paper Maoists" had a pure class agenda, all right, only it was a bourgeois agenda. Although they themselves might have honestly believed what they did was "revolutionary", they had anti -working class politics hidden by "anti racism" and left people of color talk.
And this Maoist group really did get their Andy Warhol-like "15 minutes of fame", becoming large in part because the more dishonest and destructive their "anti-racist" maneuvers became, the more support they got from white middle-class liberals and "progressives" (coincidentally?). i mean, from many white social-democrats, those white anti-repression "experts", academic leftists, etc. Those types that subject us to those endless droning lectures about "the working class" (which they aren't in and don't get, of course). As a sage comrade of mine always says, "Like is drawn to like" even if their outward appearance is very different.
This is a more difficult, easy to slip and fall on, even dangerous way of seeing things than radicals here are used to.

DCRC Week #24 (Part 2)
HAPPY (late) THANKSGIVING MY FELLOW AMERICANS 🦃🦃🦃 and if you're not American uuuh happy normal day. Today we're reading The Terrible Turkey! (do I really even need to say who it's by or can you fill in the dots based on the thumbnail panel)
I think I've mentioned in passing on here that I regularly volunteer with a waterfowl rescue, coming close to 3 whole years now! And though we specialize in waterfowl we take in just about any animal in need (including donkeys, emus, peacocks, guinea pigs, bearded dragons, you name an animal we've probably seen one). Anyways all this is to say that I have spent A LOT of time around turkeys and they're quite wonderful birds! In celebration of our little feathered friends I will be sharing some COOL TURKEY FACTS throughout this reading (highlighted in red text in case you wanna skim through for exclusively the cool turkey facts). Anyways back to the reading-
Donald why are you complaining that is a fucking STEAL (remembers inflation is a thing) oh right.
I'M NOT PAYIN FOR NO DAMN TURKEY GET MY CIVIL WAR ERA BLUNDERBUSS
Oh ok he has a whole little outfit that's a little... extra. But you know what I support him.
Speaking of wild turkeys actually, we're comin in hot with our first COOL TURKEY FACT!!!
COOL TURKEY FACT #1: There are wild turkeys. I cannot believe I am having to say this but after having a few conversations with my classmates in person most of them seemed surprised to learn that, yes, there are in fact wild turkeys living in the majority of the United States! I don't know why people find this surprising but apparently there are people that assume they're an entirely domestic animal. WRONG! Wild turkeys have roamed North America for millions of years and they're not going anywhere!
Despite Donald's hopeful thinking here he unfortunately brings us straight up to COOL TURKEY FACT #2: One of the most noticeable differences between domestic and wild turkeys is that domestic turkeys are fucking HUGE!!! (as seen in the photo below taken by myself, the bird on the left is from a meat factory while the one on the right is a wild rescue)
We made those things BIG because we want them for MEAT!!! Donald can certainly find a wild turkey to cook for thanksgiving but it's not going to be anywhere NEAR the size you'd find at a grocery store, sorry bud.
They sat alone for a total of like 10 minutes and then were like "this is BORING let's go fuck around with unca Donald" I love these little shits
I don't even know what the point of tricking him is, you guys know he's trying to find YOU a thanksgiving turkey right 😭 if he gets no turkey we get no dinner tonight bro
Hey look, a real turkey! That means it's time for COOL TURKEY FACT #3: Donald is short as hell. Okay maybe that's not a turkey fact but you saw the picture I showed earlier, right? Wild turkeys are SMALL. And look at this one compared to Donald!!! This panel hereby proves that Donald is 8 inches tall. (I can't even say this size comparison is entirely inaccurate compared to real Pekin ducks. And they're some of the larger ducks too!)
You see that dangly bit above the turkey's beak there? Well COOL TURKEY FACT #4: That part of the turkey is called the SNOOD. Yes really. A turkeys snood can actually droop higher or lower depending on the bird's mood. A short, pointed snood indicates stress, while a long and dangling snood means the bird is relaxed!
What a smart plan! Surely there's no way this could go wro
OH NO
Anyways COOL TURKEY FACT #5: Turkeys have a series of air sacs across their body that they can inflate to make themselves look bigger. Males often do this as a way to display dominance or (you guessed it) to win over the females. This is also partially what gives turkeys the appearance of being so big and round! The turkey pictured on the left here is one with all his air sacs fully inflated, but the one on the right represents what a turkey actually looks like when in a relaxed state.
COOL TURKEY FACT #6: Turkeys CAN actually fly! And they use this skill to roost in trees for the night. So Barks got this part correct :)
HOORAY HE GOT THE TURKEY!!! Time for a delicious and fulfilling meal!!! Surely there is no way this could go wrong.
JUST KIDDING BRO COOKED AN EAGLE 💀
Anyways with all my cool turkey facts out of the way I just wanted to share my favorite bit from this story, and it's actually this tiny detail allll the way at the end of this version of the carl barks library book.
THIS STORY IS FROM 1947, DONALD IS GOING TO JAIL!!!! SEE YOU LATER SWEATY

Does anyone here know about ducks? Our white ducks, guessing American Pekins, have been disappearing from our lake, I'm trying now to keep up with the last lady left, endearingly named Aflac, but this morning as I was feeding her I noticed that she had something that looked like a rash on the back of her neck
I just want to make sure she's fine :(
