Our public transit system is burning through its cash reserves next year with really draconian cuts expected in 2026. Everybody seems to be in denial about what this means, if they even know what's happening.

Yesterday's poll helped The Adventurer build his raft...

"After two hours of fumbling about with tangled rope and tree branches, he's finally produced something that at least.. mostly, looks like a normal raft. He attaches a few extra flowers for decoration, loops his cat into a makeshift safety harness (so they can't get lost in the water), then gives everything one last check before deciding it's all ready to go, nervously pushing off into the river...

Surprisingly, it floats just fine. As long as he doesn't make any sudden movements, the raft doesn't threaten to flip over, or even wobble nearly as much as he expected. There's no way to really steer or paddle, but he does have a large stick he occasionally uses to push himself away from rocks or other obstacles. Luckily, the current is very slow at this section of the river, and hopefully will remain so for his entire trip.

Just lazily floating around, he estimates he should travel about 4 hours to fully get past the blocked road and end up at the next area on his map. Though the raft is too small (and too lumpy) to comfortably lay on, he can still recline slightly, bathing in the near afternoon sun, watching the scenery slowly drift by....

About 30 minutes into his first ever sailing adventure, he feels the water shift as a larger boat comes near. He can't see it clearly yet, but it seems to be nice - polished wood with painted sections and little flags draped along the sides, presumably some sort of actual steering and propelling mechanisms, and about 10 people lounging on the surface, maybe having some sort of party..? It's been very quiet so far, these are the first other travelers he's seen in the entire area today... Should he attempt to make contact with them? "

Additional details -

Boat Make-up : Based on the results of the last poll (where people helped him make a boat by choosing the amount of materials) -- With 30% branches and 21% rope, there's only a 9% difference between them, so both are in pretty close amounts, which means there's a TON of rope. (normal ratio would be like 65% wood and 10% rope lol). I probably should have even added more, but it's so visually busy, just pretend there's extra rope wrapped under the boat too.

30% branch and 15% fabric means there's about half as much fabric as there is wood, which is also A LOT for just a little side decoration, so I made the flag huge, and a square of fabric for the cat to sit on. 10% berries means that there's enough ink for 1/3 of the wood to be entirely covered in purple designs. The least amount was the twigs and leaves for padding, which would cover a little under 1/3 of the wood (laid on top). then a little over 1/3 of the space is flowers for decor, which are just kind of sitting in a pile on top, with a few actually tied down onto the flag or other areas.

Since the branches were pretty close in percentage to all other things (not like 80% branches and 20% all other materials), the raft is fairly small, as not much wood was used.

main goal: follow his map to reach the abandoned castle ruins and see the rare animal specialist about the mysterious egg he has

one thing no one talks enough about the pandemic ruining is people's patience particularly in regards to driving

like I have anxiety and driving is becoming much harder to do because of this. I see so many people every day in my short commute so blatantly breaking traffic law and only surviving by putting everyone else in danger.

people going 20 or 30mph over the speed limit who get mad at you for doing only 10 over.

people running red lights because they don't want to wait. making other people swerve to avoid them.

just had a guy tonight almost hit me because he was turning left from a middle lane at a red light because he didn't want to wait in line in the turn lane or even for his own light to be green or for even other cars to be out of his way because he's clearly the most important person here and rules are for lesser beings.

people (in my city at least) ever since a few years ago just drive however they want signs and lights and lanes and rules be damned. I'm sure it's probably the same or worse in even bigger cities.

after getting in an accident because a guy was speeding in a residential side road while looking down on his phone a bit ago, having near misses from brain dead entitled morons doing stupid shit with multi ton lethal machines makes driving a little bit more anxiety inducing every time.

small town hatred is so tired. so many people i've seen online whinge about being in a small town and i did the same when i was a kid and then i moved away to a very big city and y'know what? sometimes you miss putting your toes in grass and seeing the mountains in the distance and having to slow your car for turkeys and their babies as they cross the road. going to a town that is not small, per se, but mid-sized and slowing down a little has fixed me immeasurably.

I'm going insane due to American infrastructure and lack of transportation options.

I'm trying to fly from Sweden to the Midwest with my dog.

It's borderline impossible.

The dog is a Labrador, so he's too big for the cabin and must travel in the hold. I hate this and I'm very anxious about it, but I guess I understand why large dogs can't be in the cabin unless they are service animals. Fine.

The problem is that seemingly no airlines in the US transports dogs in the hold. Apparently only European and Canadian ones do that.

Since I am in the Midwest, not many of these airlines fly that far inland.

The airport that is closest to my hometown (2 hour drive), does not have any options whatsoever.

The next closest is a four hour drive. It has 1 option. After that is one that is a 6 hour drive, and they have a few more options.

Even if I choose the 4 hour or 6 hour drive from my home town, I still have to depend on my parents being able to pick me up. Which means an 8 or 12 hour round trip for them. There is absolutely no busses or trains that go to my home town. Any busses and trains that go somewhat near there (2 hour drive from the train station to my hometown), don't allow dogs to board, even in a kennel.

I can't rent a car either. I don't drive. Even if I did, I spent 2 years I Europe, so my license would have expired.

Even if it didn't, renting is needlessly difficult and expensive. Technically you have to be 21. But if you're under 25, you get charged extra. And extra pet fees.

Don't even get me started on shipping dogs as cargo. $7,500 was just 1 quote.

Some part of me really wants to live in a city, I crave it. The time I spent living in a big city was so wonderful, but its always so expensive and I get overstimulated from noise way too easily. Being able to hear my neighbors will ruin my day and that doesn't really work in a big city.

Sentinel's culture shocks when moving to America

So we all know that Shadow Co. is based in America, and my girl being a Franco-russian , I thought it might be funny if I threw in some culture differences based on what I noticed on my side (it's from my personal experience so some of them might not apply to America as a whole). Also how she would share her own culture. So let's go:

She doesn't know what miles, ounces, feets, inches and pounds represent and refuses to learn

Cannot for the life of her comprehend why Americans use the 12 hours clock

Hates the lack of fresh, non-GMO, products in supermarkets and will drive hours to get stuff she considers healthy for the shadows, ain't no way her guys are eating something that has got pesticides on it

Will constantly complain about the lack of public transportation, even though she doesn't really go out

Her half-French ass cannot understand why strikes aren't a thing, they worked so well for us!

Is baffled by the American school system and can't understand why their exams are made out of QCMs

Will keep shitting on America's healthcare system just because she has opinions on how their government uses their budget

Somehow fascinated by their patriotism even though she thinks it's too much

Finds the size of normal things extraordinary, and will happily buy an American-sized package of her comfort food

Laughs at how Americans actually respect the drinking age

Orders snacks from France and Russia that she can't find in America any chance she gets and leaves some of them in the common room for the shadows to enjoy too. She also cooks traditional meals to share with the group, it's her way of sharing her culture.

THE WHINERRRRR I've been at this summer training program half a day and I already hate itttttttt

When I first got in a couple of them (fellow phd students in the doctoral network we're a part of) were asking me about my background and stuff because they'd all just been talking about their background in embryonic research and reproductive biotechnology and what fucking ever and I was like yeah um I did environmental consulting for proposed development projects and was also a math and science tutor for kids and got a fuckin LOOOOOOK from them bro :/ and like genuine surprise of oh so all this stuff is new to you? You're gonna learn it all here? Like YES? THIS IS A SUMMER TRAINING PROGRAM NOT A SUMMER ALREADY KNOWS IT PROGRAM. And then they were like you only brought that backpack with you? And I was like yeah my supervisor booked my flights and only got a carryon but it's whatever and they were like wowwww my university got me a checked bag I could neverrrr fit everything into a backpack like that. Poor you. Then one guy was like what's that fish you have tattooed? And i was like oh it's m.zebra I did my bachelor's thesis on them and he was like ugh. I could NEVERRRR have something *work* related tattooed on me (he has no tattoos but told me all about how he's perfectly planned two sleeves of japanese motifs on one and nordic runes on another) and then when we got in I was like you know I might just hand wash a shirt or two bc by the time I get enough stuff for a load of laundry I'll be out of clothes and this girl was like omggggg I just feel SOOO BAD for you with that tiny backpack I don't know how you did it. And then tattoo expert was like honestly if I went to America when I was 20 and they told me I couldn't drink a beer I'd GO CRAZY how come you guys can join the army and vote and do all this stuff before getting a beer?? And I was like you're aware I have no power over this right? And then later on in the night he was like yeah I see those videos of Americans making mac and cheese with like bricks of cheese and stuff it's fucked up and I was like no yeah I'd come home from work and fry a whole block of velveeta every day. And then he was like that are those runes on your hand and I was like they're not runes. Also every time we smell weed he's like haha look at her the Californian she's so excited. Anyway I kinda hate it here I wanna go home four of us are sharing one bathroom and the shower doesn't drain at all and the whole thing floods and I feel like everyone is being so patronizing to me cause I'm some dumb inexperienced American and they keep making snides about how I got into a really good project and how norway has the best pay out of all the European countries associated with this program and why am I being so cheap and taking public transport from the airport when I'm getting the norway pay?? Anyway I almost cried in bed last night. Onwards and upwards I'm here til next Wednesday.
