I am constantly scared of horror movies to the point that I make an effort to not watch them but the passion you have for them makes me want to watch one and expand my horizons. Any horror recommendations for someone who gets spooked easily? I’m fine with gore btw it’s more like realistic anxiety situations scare me like stuff that has to do with being kidnapping/feeling trapped. Have a wonderful night <3
Aw this is so sweet, I'm glad you're wanting to expand your horizons and I'm honored to be your guide! I think you'd enjoy more comedy horror, cheesy horror and horror that is more monster based. I can recommend some horror you could handle but I'd definitely stay away from movies like Saw, Hostel, The Black Phone and others like those.
I'd also recommend watching the trailers for these recommendations just so you can get a taste of them before you dive right in. I hope you enjoy trying out some horror! 🖤
Little Shop of Horrors (1986) its a musical! Rick Moranis is amazing as a guy who gets an alien plant that has an unusual appetite
The Monster Squad (1987) some nerdy horror fans have to save their town from classic monsters that show up
Night of the Living Dead (1968) a zombie movie with minimal scares and an important marker in horror history!
They Live (1988) An alien movie with reflections on society
The Lost Boys (1987) California vampires. that's pretty much it
Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975) another musical! campy, fun and queer as hell. one of my favorite movies in the whole world.
Re-Animator (1985) a lil science dude gets his roommate to help him bring people back to life [there is a sexual assault scene towards the end just fyi]
Evil Dead 2 & Army of Darkness (1987 & 1992) Bruce Campbell as a dude who can't catch a break. possessions, time travel, chainsaws, and catchphrases you'll be saying forever
Ginger Snaps (2000) a girl werewolf movie!! sisterhood, puberty, and some awesome special effects
Trick 'r Treat (2007) follow the rules of halloween or a cute lil guy will come and kill you. love this one so so much! also fun intertwined stories
Killer Klowns from Outer Space (1988) one of my favorite movies! clowns, cotton candy, 2 dudes and 1 girl with a whole lot of chemistry flowing between then and a giant clown boss
Elvira: Mistress of the Dark (1988) Elvira's her usual beautiful campy self in a movie where she deals with a small town, an old wizard dude and a show in Vegas
Scream (1996) a slightly realistic slasher movie that pokes fun at horror movies and fans. a great cast and ofc the iconic costume
Beetlejuice [and honestly a lot of Tim Burton movies]
Any/All of the Universal Monster movies [Frankenstein, Dracula, The Invisible Man, The Creature from the Black Lagoon, The Wolf Man]
Jennifer's Body (2009) A girl gets possessed and hunts down boys while her best friend tries to stop her. queer undertones, awesome leads and iconic lines
Zombieland (2009) a fun silly zombie movie with an awesome cast
Willy's Wonderland (2021) starring Nicholas Cage as a stranger who comes to town and has to deal with some silly possessed animatronics [big five nights at Freddy's vibes]
Dave Made A Maze (2017) a guy who's lost in life builds an insane labyrinth in his living room and it comes to life. such a good movie mixing horror, comedy and life lessons
Feel free to message me/send an ask for more recommendations, your thoughts on ones you watch, or anything else!

October 5th, 1985
The seasons were beginning to reflect the changes in all of your lives. As soon as the first leaves began to turn amber the week prior, you had all gathered to help Max move out of her old house into the Forest Hills Trailer Park. And now, here you were again, repeating the same motions with the Byers family, packing their lives up and putting the boxes into a moving truck.
When you handed one off to Joyce and went back into the house to help Dustin pack up another, you walked in on Max and Lucas taunting him by singing The NeverEnding Story theme.
“What’s going on in here?” You asked with a gleeful chuckle, happy to see your younger friends finding joy on a sad day.
“These assholes won’t even let me mention Suzie without singing this stupid song,” Dustin whined as they continued to sing.
“Wait, did we get that verse right?” Max paused to ask. “It’s ‘unfold behind the clouds’?”
“Yeah, but you’re butchering it, so could you please stop?”
“So then join in Dusty-bun,” Lucas teased him in a squeaky, girly voice and blew him a kiss.
“Yeah, come on Dusty-bun, why don’t you join us?” Max echoed.
“You guys are so funny, you should be on Carson.”
“I cannot believe that I missed out on you and Suzie singing that together,” You chuckled. “I’m not sure I even fully believe it happened.”
“Oh, believe me, it happened,” Lucas said, a giant grin on his face. “And it was amazing.”
“Can’t we just hear your rendition?” Max begged, since she had missed it, too.
“No.”
“Please? Just one verse?”
“No! No way. It’s reserved for Suzie’s ears and Suzie’s ears alone.”
Max and Lucas went silent and gave each other a look, then immediately burst into song again. Dustin begged them to stop, and you waved your hands at them emphatically.
“Come on, guys. Stop!” You yelled.
“Thank you!” Dustin said with a sigh of relief when they listened to you.
You smirked at him before adding, “You gotta sing it more like this…” Then you scrunched up your face and belted out, “IN THEIR FACE, THE MIRROR OF THEIR DREEEEEAAAAMS!”
They joined in with your singing again happily, clapping their hands in rhythm, and Dustin waved his middle finger at the three of you with a completely straight face. You stopped and snorted at him, then walked off to pick up another box as they continued to taunt him despite his pleas for them to shut up. As you walked down the hallway, you passed Mike and Will and couldn’t help eavesdropping on their conversation.
Will dropped his D&D materials into a box, and Mike frantically warned him that it was for donations.
“I know,” Will shrugged. “I’ll just use yours when I come back. I mean… if we still wanna play.”
“Yeah, but what if you want to join another party?”
“Not possible.”
They smiled at each other, and Will walked off to get more of his things. You remembered how Mike had mentioned that joining Hellfire had been a point of contention between the two of them, and you were happy to see that they had reached some kind of understanding. You balanced the box you were carrying on your hip so that you could give Mike a supportive pat on his shoulder as you passed by him on your way to the front door. As strong as he appeared to be outwardly, you knew this day was hardest on him. He was about to lose his best friend and girlfriend in one fell swoop.
You set the box down in the truck, and Joyce came up and put a hand on your back.
“Thanks again for helping today, Y/N. We appreciate it.”
“Of course. Wouldn’t want to be anywhere else.”
She smiled at you and brushed your hair behind your shoulder lovingly before pulling you into a hug. This gesture easily brought tears to your eyes. You hadn’t realized until her last day at Melvald’s how much you had come to rely on her company. How much you wished she could be your mother instead of the one you had. Your own mother had never looked at you the way she had, with so much warmth and adoration.
“It’s not gonna be the same at Melvald’s without you,” You admitted, whispering into her shoulder. She pulled away, her hands gripping your arms, and stuck her bottom lip out as she studied the sad look on your face that you were failing to conceal. She clicked her tongue and stroked your hair again.
“You know, Mr. Melvald is gonna need someone else to fill in as manager now,” She said gently. “I spoke to him, and the position is yours if you want it. He’s gonna talk to you on Monday.”
Your eyebrows raised in shock. With that promotion came a pay raise, which meant you would be able to reach your goal of moving out of your parents’ house much faster than you had planned. You were so touched by this gesture that you had trouble finding words, your mouth hanging open.
“Thank you, Joyce,” You finally said quietly, your voice breaking. “That means a lot to me.”
She nodded, then shook you gently by the shoulders and said, “Hold down the fort here for me, will ya? Keep looking after these kids. They’re gonna need you.”
“I will,” You said, nodding back at her determinedly.
You reached up to squeeze one of her hands before she released her grip on you and blew a puff of air out of the corner of her mouth, trying to ease some of the heaviness she was feeling in her heart.
“Alright,” She sighed. “How many boxes do we have left in there?”
“Just a handful,” You sniffed, turning your head towards the house to wipe away a tear subtly. “I think the boys are just about done packing up their rooms.”
“Okay. Good. I’m gonna go make sure my room is all packed up, too. Would you mind grabbing Jonathan for me so he can help me lift these mattresses into the truck?”
“Sure, no problem.”
You smiled at her and waited for her to go inside the house before you followed. You had to pause to close your eyes and breathe deeply in through your nose first, willing yourself to fight back your emotions.
When you walked down the hallway and made it to Jonathan’s door, you found him and Nancy embracing each other in the middle of his empty room, swaying back and forth. Your heart ached for them. You waited as long as you could, feeling guilty for interrupting such a sweet moment before rapping your knuckles softly on the doorframe. They both lifted their heads to look at you, tears streaking both of their faces.
“I’m sorry,” You said softly. “Jonathan, your mom asked me to come get you. She needs help loading the truck.”
He nodded and wiped his nose and eyes on his shirt collar before pressing a kiss to Nancy’s forehead and brushing past you, patting your shoulder kindly as he passed through the doorway. Nancy turned away from you and wiped her eyes.
“You… okay?” You asked her, even though it was clear that she wasn’t. You weren’t sure what else to say.
“Yeah,” She sniffed, then spun back around, pushing her shoulders back with a little head shake as she fought to steel herself. “I’ll be fine. We should probably go help.”
You nodded and she walked over to you, wiping her eyes one more time. You wrapped an arm around her waist as the two of you walked down the hallway together, and she gratefully reciprocated the gesture by winding her own around your shoulders.
After Jonathan put the last box in the truck and pulled the door down, you all knew that you had reached the end. It was time to say your final goodbyes.
You hugged El first, thanking her for everything she had done to protect you and your friends, and she thanked you for helping her, Mike, and Max at the mall on The Fourth. You silently hoped that now that her powers were gone, she would be able to live her life peacefully without having to carry the enormous burden of everything she had been forced to do with them. Then you hugged Jonathan, who asked you to look after Nancy for him, and you promised him you would before asking him to take care of himself. He had one more sibling to look after now with El, and you knew he was about to do everything in his power to help out his mom and keep them out of trouble. Your biggest wish for him was that this move to California would at least help him feel like he could find some solace, now that they would all be away from the Upside Down and the memories of Will’s suffering that still haunted them. You wished the same for Will, and also that he would finally have the time and space to find himself and his place in the world. You wanted him to find his light again. His joy. You wished he could be the happy little kid you used to babysit again, or at least some version of him.
When you got to him, you couldn’t hold back your tears anymore. He was openly weeping, and seeing him so upset made you a mess. You hugged him tightly, then pulled away and held him by the shoulders.
“Promise me you won’t stop making art, okay? Maybe you can send me some of your stuff sometime.”
“I promise,” He agreed with a nod, and wiped his eyes. “But you have to promise me, too.”
“Okay,” You sniffled, a melancholy smile making a brief appearance on your face. “I promise.”
He sprung forward to hug you again, making you lurch back slightly from the sheer force of it. It made you want to break into a million little pieces.
“You’re gonna be safe now, alright?” You whispered, your voice cracking. “You’re gonna be okay.” You sincerely hoped that it was the truth.
He nodded against your shoulder then reluctantly pulled away for the final time, avoiding eye contact with you as he wiped his nose on his arm and walked over to Lucas to embrace him next.
Joyce clutched at her chest while she watched the kids cry and hug each other tightly one by one, and you went over to her to give her a supportive side hug. You could tell she was feeling a pang of guilt for tearing them apart, but you wanted to make sure she knew that she was making the right choice for her and her family. She rubbed your back lovingly, smiling at you, then sighed and called out to her kids that it was time to go. You all parted from each other as slowly as possible, waving goodbye as Joyce and El got into the truck and Will and Jonathan got into his car.
Everyone stood and watched somberly as they faded into the distance - Max clinging to Lucas’s arm, Nancy resting her head on you after you hooked your arm through hers, and Dustin clapping a hand on Mike’s shoulder as he wore a look of utter devastation on his face. Then without so much as a word you all parted ways, the kids riding away on their bicycles and Nancy giving you a proper hug before getting into her car and driving away. You had taken your parents’ car again without permission and as you drove down the street, you watched as Max separated from the others to go towards the trailer park. You instantly knew why. She wanted to be alone. But you couldn’t resist making another attempt to be there for her.
You flagged her down and stopped the car beside her, then rolled your window down.
“Why don’t you let me give you a ride?” You called.
“I’m fine,” She shrugged.
“I know you are. But Forest Hills is pretty far, and I don’t want you riding all the way out there by yourself.”
“I don’t mind.”
You sighed and leaned over to open the car door.
“Put your bike in the back,” You commanded, nodding to the backseat. She stayed still, staring at you with her brows furrowed, and you raised yours at her impatiently in return. “Come on! Please?” You added, cocking your head.
She rolled her eyes and swung her leg over the bike, then shoved it roughly into the back of your car before getting in beside you and slamming the door.
“Thank you,” You mumbled as you pulled away from the side of the road, but she just folded her arms over her chest and turned to the window. You couldn’t keep yourself from repeatedly glancing over at her as you sat in silence, and in turn, she kept eyeing you uncomfortably.
“So… hard week, huh?” You finally decided on saying, then immediately regretted it. She turned her head just enough to stare back at you with a look of aversion. You did a double take, unsettled by how hard it seemed like she was trying to disintegrate you with her mind.
“What?” You asked defensively.
“You gave me a ride just to try to get me to talk about my feelings, didn’t you?”
Shit. She was too smart for you.
“No,” You said quickly with a scoff that was a bit too unconvincing.
“Jesus,” She muttered, leaning her head against her hand. “I get enough of that from the school guidance counselor. I don’t need it from you, too. I’m sad, but everyone else is sad, too. Okay? It’s fine. I’ll be fine.”
“I know you will be,” You said sadly with a shrug. “I just want you to know that I’m here if you need anything.”
She turned to look at you again, then groaned a little before softening her posture.
“I’m sorry. I’m just sick of people asking me if I’m okay all the time and trying to make me talk about things. I don’t want to think about it.”
“Okay. That’s fair. I won’t bring it up again. But you can at any time, alright?”
She shrugged, lowering her eyes for a moment before glancing over at you with a smirk.
“Whatever. I know the real reason why you wanted to drive me.”
“Huh?” You asked, genuinely confused since she had already figured out your master plan.
“Because Eddie lives next door to me now.”
You turned to her with wide eyes, your mouth opening and closing as you struggled to find words to defend yourself. You certainly weren’t expecting her to say that.
“You didn’t know I knew about that, did you?” She scoffed.
“Knew about what, exactly?”
“You and Eddie. And… Steve.”
“How the hell did you find out about Steve?!” You asked her a little too panicked, and it made her laugh.
“I didn’t. Until just now,” She giggled. “I just took a shot. I knew something weird was going on between you guys, but Lucas wouldn’t believe me.”
You closed your eyes for a moment wearily before you suddenly remembered that you were driving and snapped them open again.
“Oh my god,” You grumbled, gripping the steering wheel tightly. “There’s nothing there… anymore. There may have been. A little. Briefly. But we cleared it up. We’re still just friends. Please, do not tell any of the others. Not even Lucas. Okay?”
“Fine,” She shrugged, a smirk still on her face. “And Eddie?”
“Okay, no. You start talking first,” You protested firmly. “What do you know?”
“I know he couldn’t shut up about you when he drove me to school this week.”
You were stunned silent. You knew he had promised you he’d check in on her, but you hadn’t expected him to still do it after the way you had treated him the last time you spoke. And you certainly hadn’t expected him to do it almost immediately after she moved in.
“He drove you to school?” You asked quietly.
“Yeah. On Monday. I thought it was weird until he started talking about you, and then I realized he was probably just trying to get in your good graces. Never riding with him again, by the way. We almost died in a fiery crash at least ten times.”
Jesus Christ. Even though you refused to answer any of his questions and pushed him away, Eddie was still invested in you and ready to lend a helping hand. The boy was relentless.
“What did he… what did he say about me?”
“I don’t know, just how cool and nice you were, and he kept asking me about you. Like, how I met you and stuff.” She paused, remembering their conversations, then looked at you with her forehead wrinkled in concern. “Wait, he’s not a stalker, is he?”
“No,” You snorted. “No, he’s not. He’s… sweet.”
She raised an eyebrow at you.
“You’re into him, right? Because he’s clearly into you.”
“Doesn’t matter,” You brushed her off quickly. “It wouldn’t work.”
“Why not?”
“I just think… it’d be irresponsible to drag him into my life, considering how… chaotic it is.”
She sighed and rolled her eyes as she immediately realized what you were holding back from saying to try to spare her.
“You mean because of the Upside Down?” She grumbled, and you turned to her, your head tilted apologetically.
“Yeah,” You admitted bashfully. “Exactly.”
“Whether he knows about it or not, it’s still there, Y/N,” She said, shaking her head. “Billy didn’t know about it, and he still died. Maybe if you involved Eddie, then you could actually have a better chance at keeping him safe.”
“No, you don’t know him, Max. If he found out… he would… he would have to be the one to try to keep me safe. To keep all of us safe. No matter the cost.”
“Okay, then… just don’t tell him about it. Tell him enough to get him off your back, and then leave out all of the…crazy shit. That way you can still keep him in the dark and keep an eye on him at the same time in case something happens again.”
You were surprised by how nonchalant she was about the idea of you hiding things from him, and the gate to the Upside Down reopening again.
“But I can’t… I can’t lie to him like that. Right?”
She shrugged, then avoiding your gaze, she mumbled, “I think it’s okay to lie to somebody you care about if you know it’ll protect them. Sometimes, you don’t really have a choice.”
You stared at her in shock but she sat firm, a faraway look on her face. You couldn’t resist prodding her to figure out where her experience with this came from.
“Are you talking about your mom? Or Lucas?” You asked quietly.
“We’re not talking about me. We’re talking about you.”
“Max…”
“Listen, there’s gotta be some excuse you can think of,” She interrupted you. “Anything. Does he know about any of it yet?”
You sighed and rubbed your eyebrow, desperately wanting to move the subject away from Eddie, but her gaze was suddenly unwavering.
“Alright,” You finally said dejectedly. “He was out for blood trying to figure out who gave me my injuries from both of our… Upside Down encounters, but I just told him I was at the mall on The Fourth. He could tell there was something I was hiding, though, and I sort of freaked out and snapped at him because I didn’t know what else to tell him. That’s where we left off. I haven’t spoken to him since.”
She pondered this, then sucked a determined breath through her teeth.
“Okay,” She nodded. “Easy. You can just tell him about Billy, then. Tell him he was the one who hurt you both times, and you saw him die at the mall. That it was hard for you to talk about it. That’s not even a lie.”
You were in disbelief at how easy it was for her to be impartial while talking about this. How willing she was to offer Billy up as a scapegoat.
“But… it… it wasn’t actually Billy who hurt me the second time,” You stammered. “It feels… wrong to blame him for that.”
“I know Billy saved El in the end, but he was still an asshole, Y/N. He still did a lot of bad things in his life. He hurt you - he hurt us - more than once. You can tell Eddie the truth about that. That you were trying to protect us from him. It’s okay.”
You shook your head, once again stunned by her detached demeanor while reliving the events of that night, and her determination for you to find a way to move forward not only with Eddie, but in your life as well. She was an unmovable force.
“You’re insanely strong, you know that?” You couldn’t resist saying. She just snorted.
“It’s not like I have a choice.”
Hearing her say that made you wince, and you couldn’t hold back your worry anymore.
“Look, Max. I appreciate you trying to help me with this, but I promise you there was no part of me that wanted to give you a ride so I could see Eddie. That’s actually the last thing I want right now. I just didn’t want you to be alone today. And I guess… I didn’t want to be alone either.”
She lowered her eyes and rested her head on her hand again as she looked out the window.
“Don’t you ever get sick of being around people that know about the Upside Down? That remind you about everything that happened?” She asked quietly after a brief moment of silence.
You hadn’t thought about that before. Spending time with Robin and Steve had seemed to heal you at first, but maybe another one of the reasons why you and Steve had trouble working things out was because you were both too focused on trying to carry the weight of your traumas.
You weren’t sure if this was a rhetorical question or not and you didn’t know how to respond, so instead you asked, “Do you?”
You wondered if she was still trying to make a case for you to go after Eddie, or if she was actually just making a pointed comment about having to be in the car with you. Maybe she was even thinking about Lucas and the others, too. But she just stayed silent, her eyes still glued to the window so you couldn’t read her face. You remembered your promise to her that you would leave her alone, so you didn’t press her, no matter how badly you wanted to. But after a while the unanswered question hanging in the air and your worry for her began to grate on you.
“Is it okay if I play something?” You blurted, and she nodded without bothering to look at you. You put in a tape and pressed play, turning up the volume dial. A minute or so into the first song, she finally turned back to you.
“What is this?” She asked, and you couldn’t tell if it was in disgust or just genuine curiosity.
“Oh, uh. I just bought it. It’s Kate Bush, Hounds of Love. If you don’t like it, I can turn it off…”
“No,” She said quickly, interrupting you. “It’s fine. I was just wondering.”
She fell silent again, and the two of you let Kate Bush’s voice fill the lull. Then when the song ended, she spoke again.
“It’s… kinda weird.”
“Yeah, I guess it is. Just wait, it gets weirder,” You chuckled. “Is that bad?”
“No. I like it. What was that song called?”
“Running Up That Hill. It’s good, right? Here.”
You reached into the side pocket of your door to pick up the cassette case and handed it to her. You snuck a few peeks at her as she studied it, her eyebrows furrowed.
“My favorite is track five,” You offered, and she nodded, tracing her finger across the plastic until she got to it.
“Cloudbusting,” She read aloud.
“That’s the one.”
“What does that mean?” She chuckled.
“Honestly, no idea. But it makes me cry.”
“And you like that?”
“Yeah. It’s… cathartic. There’s nothing better than a sad song you can have a good, self-pitying cry to.”
She pursed her lips as she pondered this, then nodded and set the cassette down in her lap before turning the volume up louder and relaxing back into her seat. You let her listen in peaceful silence for the remainder of the car ride, glancing over at her every now and then as she watched the passing trees.
When you pulled up to her trailer, she tried to hand the tape case back to you before she got out of the car, but you waved a hand at her and ejected the tape, trying to pass it to her instead.
“Keep it. Consider it a housewarming gift.”
“I can’t keep it,” She said, cocking her head at you impatiently.
“Sure you can. I’ve already played it out, anyways.”
“You said it was new.”
“Yeah, it is. And I’ve been listening to it on repeat for two weeks. You’d be doing me a favor, honestly. I need to get it out of my head.”
She stared at you with her arm still extended, case in hand, and you raised your eyebrows at her and waved the cassette at her again. She scoffed at your refusal to back down.
“Y/N…”
“Max. Take it. Please,” You insisted with a smile, grabbing her free hand to shove the tape into it. She pulled both hands back and stared at each object with a sigh.
“Okay. Thanks,” She shrugged, putting the tape back inside the case, then leaned forward to shove it into her back pocket. As she did, she looked out the window and turned back to you with a smirk.
“Looks like Eddie’s home,” She teased.
You leaned forward to look out her window, too, and saw Eddie’s familiar van directly across the way. You hadn’t expected him to live that close to her.
“Yeah, so?” You mumbled, slumping back against your seat.
“So… are you gonna do something about it?”
You groaned loudly then glared at her, refusing to answer her question.
“Y/N, he hangs out with the boys every day at school, he offers me rides, he’s my neighbor, and you’ve hung out with him multiple times. He’s already in your life. You may as well fully let him in, don’t you think? Especially since it’s clearly what you both want. Just… stop being an idiot. Okay? You know you need this.”
Your mouth opened, but before you could even say anything, she got out of the car to grab her bike from the back. As she wheeled it away, she waved goodbye to you before pointing a demanding finger at Eddie’s trailer.
You let your head fall back against your seat and closed your eyes.
Max clearly wasn’t one to hold back or mince words. You knew that she was telling you the truth. Besides, if your friends moving away had made you realize anything, it was that your future was even more uncertain than before. Robin and Nancy would be graduating soon and would leave Hawkins for college. The kids would all get their driver’s licenses in a year or so and wouldn’t need you for rides anymore. And Steve? Who knew what he would do, but nothing would be keeping him around once everyone else was gone. And then there was Eddie. Maybe he wasn’t so sure he would be leaving Hawkins once he graduated, but you were.
Max was right about everything. Even Steve was right. While Eddie was still here and miraculously still fighting to be in your life for whatever reason, you needed to take the leap. Who knew how much time you would have left together anyways? Maybe he would still opt to leave town, even if you did become a couple. Maybe… maybe if things went well, you could even leave together. And then you would both be safe away from Hawkins and the Upside Down.
But above all else, maybe, just maybe, the danger was actually, finally over. You wanted to believe that more than anything. With El and the Byers family gone and safe, it felt kind of true.
You weren’t completely certain, but your heart wouldn’t stop fighting you. Selfish or not, Max’s comment made you feel like maybe what you really needed to move forward was someone who had no idea about the Upside Down. Someone who could be an escape for you, or a bridge back to reality. Somebody who could help you to see a future away from all of this.
And best of all, without even knowing the full story, Eddie was clearly still willing to be in your life. All he seemed to want was to be there for you.
What you really, really needed was him. It was almost aggravating how intensely you felt it in that moment.
You couldn’t take it anymore. You jumped out of your car and went up to his door before you could talk yourself out of it. You knocked quickly, shaking your leg anxiously as you waited for someone to open it. Then Eddie threw it open, leaving the screen door closed between the two of you. He didn’t say anything at first, too confused about how you had ended up at his door.
“Hi,” You said meekly.
“Y/N? What are you doing here? How did you…?”
“The van,” You interrupted him, pointing your thumb behind you. “Plus, I drove Max home and she said you lived here. We just got back from helping the Byers family move out of their house. They’re moving to California.”
“Oh. I’m sorry. I know you were close to them.”
“It’s fine,” You said dissmissively, waving a hand. You weren’t sure why you had said all that. You were just nervous. “Anyways, that’s not why I’m here.”
“So… what did you need?”
You began shaking your leg nervously again, and he raised an eyebrow at you.
“I’m sorry. Can I… can we talk for a second?”
You eyed the screen door, hinting that you wanted him to remove the barrier between you, and he sighed before holding it open with his arm.
“Talk about what?” he asked wearily.
“Did you… did you drive Max to school the other day?”
“Uh…yeah? Why? Is that not okay? I know I’m not the best driver or most reliable babysitter, I just figured… I remembered you said she could use help right now so I just thought…”
You sighed loudly, interrupting him, and shook your head at him.
“I told you to stay away, I practically yelled at you, and then you still turn around and help me take care of my friends? Who does that?”
He scoffed at you, then turned his head away and licked his lips, trying to stop himself from snapping back at you.
“Well, I’m pretty sure I freaked her out, so you shouldn’t have to worry about it anymore. I doubt she’ll ever let me drive her anywhere again. Problem solved, ‘kay? Is that all?”
He stood and stared at you as he waited for you to say something or leave, but you just buried your face in your hands with an exasperated laugh before shaking your head at him again.
“God. You’re so… aggravating!” You blurted out, your teeth clenched.
“I’m aggravating? I’m aggravating?” He raised his voice back at you, his eyes wide with astonishment. “You’re standing here at my door yelling at me, looking that pretty, telling me that I’m aggravating? Jesus Chri-”
Before he could finish his sentence, you bolted forward and kissed him on the lips, both of your hands on either side of his face. He was shocked at first, but it didn’t take long for him to remove his arm from the screen door, letting it smack against him so he could wrap it around your waist. Then you pulled away to look at him, your hands still on his cheeks.
“I’m so sorry. I was an idiot,” You began to ramble. “I didn’t mean any of the things I said. I was just scared, and I can explain all of that to you if you want but I don’t need you to save me, Eddie. I don’t want you to. I just… I just need you in my life. Like this. Exactly like this. Because you were right. I don’t want to just be friends either. I want to be with you, so badly. But I know I don’t deserve it, and if this has all been too much for you, if I blew it for the last time, I would completely understand if…”
He shook his head vigorously to silence you, then clamped a hand to the back of your neck to pull you in for another kiss. You couldn’t help smiling against his lips before letting yourself melt back into him.
“No more running away?” He whispered after finally pulling away, his forehead resting against yours and his hand in your hair.
“No more running. I promise,” You said, shaking your head against his. “You’re not gonna be able to get rid of me now. Hope you won’t regret it.”
He pretended to think about it, his lips pursed in mock contemplation before he dropped the act quickly and said, “Yeah. I think I’ll be okay.”
You both grinned, and he wrapped his arms around you to pull you into a tight hug, swaying you back and forth contentedly.
“Nope. I’m definitely never letting you go,” He mumbled and pressed a soft kiss to your temple.
You wanted it to be true so badly.

Priscilla Trailer Dives Into The Epic Love Story of the Presleys
Tumblr media
Cailee Spaeny and Jacob Elordi come together as young Elvis and his wife in the new film Priscilla which will be released on November 3. The trailer looks stunning as it captures some of the most intimate moments of the couple from the beginning to the end of their relationship. Just take a look at it. https://youtu.be/DBWk6BohVXk?si=Nc7SD2S34PW0bsYy   A big involvement in the production of the film is Sophia Coppola who serves as the writer, co-director, and producer of the movie. The trailer seems quite Coppola-coded. Her signature soft-feminine aesthetic stays prominent in the trailer and reveals her significant influence on the project. She revealed that "the of women of that generation to be completely fulfilled with having a successful husband, a beautiful home and a child. If they wanted some expression outside of that it was a struggle and it wasn’t expected", was what stuck to her about Priscilla's character. Another impactful contribution to this movie is by the real Priscilla who is the executive producer. Because the movie is based on her 1985 memoir called "Elvis and Me", her views are important. Overall, she seems pretty satisfied with the project and appreciates Coppola for her extraordinary direction.  “I think Sofia did an amazing job, she did her homework."  Thoroughly, Priscilla looks promising as it received a seven-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival this year. The lead actor, Cailee Spaeny who brought Priscilla to life, shined through the event winning the best actor prize.  Our young Elvis, Jacob Elordi, is embracing the true essence of his role. As we've already witnessed Austin Butler playing his life-changing (and voice-changing) role, it is now time for Jacob to bring his much-talked-about charm to the viewers. While talking about him, Coppola quoted "Yeah, he has that kind of charisma that I imagine Elvis had." We already have an Oscar-nominated film that revolves solely around Elvis. This makes Priscella's perspective of him, and his life story, an absolute treat. We're hoping for some empowered feminist views trapped within the societal constraints that prevailed throughout history. The film will feature Priscella as the focal point of the story. The story features everything wrapped in the sweet romance along with other impactful life events. Comment and let us know what you expect from the movie.   Read the full article

ok this got a few likes so i guess there’s interest so here it is. This definitely reflects my interest and bias so do ur own research! get lost in anilist’s really thorough filters! Get weird with it!
in no particular order:
- Lensman (1984) is the second ever anime to use CGI in a bit at the end where the protagonist gets lost in some kind of demonic cyberspace. The entire movie is on youtube and the bit im talking about (which is all ive watched lol) starts at 1:25:45
youtube
- Pop Team Epic (2018) if you havent seen it already uses a variety of mediums including different types of stop motion (with paper, fabric dolls, clay etc) to animate its shitpost sketches and its truly a delight
youtube
- Heike Monogatari (2021) looks like a traditional Japanese painting come to life. No surprises that its amazing since it comes from science saru, the studio savant director yuasa masaki (who will appear again on this list) established to experiment with bleeding edge technology.
youtube
- FLCL (2001) Look, you knew this was coming, i knew this was coming, we all knew this was coming. But come ON. this shit was made with 2d digital animation in the YEAR TWO THOUSAND and it STILL looks better than most stuff from today. do you even remember what computers were like in the year two thousand??? this is an anime KNOWN for being insanely creative with animation, famously letting all its animators do whatever they wanted in their scenes. some of the scenes weren’t even story boarded by the director. They animated MANGA PANELS for chrissake. they did a SOUTH PARK bit. i will not rest until all of my followers have seen this anime idc. just pick any moment from this video and its guaranteed to blow your socks off.
youtube
- the tatami galaxy (2011) if you haven’t seen this show WHAT are you doing. im not even gonna say anything ill just drop the trailer here and let it speak for itself.
- Pingpong the animation (2014) i know, i KNOW. an anime about ping-pong? but seriously, just LOOK at it. after tatami galaxy this is our third and final yuasa joint of the night. The man is a genius.
youtube
- akira (1988) you know this had to be on the list. im not even gonna drop the trailer because if you follow me theres no way you havent seen at least a gif of this movie. You’re welcome.
- sonny boy (2021) hey so do you guys remember this little anime, it was sort of popular a while ago, kind of niche, it was called “one punch man”? yeah so the guy who directed that basically did such a banger job that studio madhouse handed him a bunch of money and resources to write and produce his own original anime (NOT adapted from anything) and he made one of the great philosphical treatises of our times, no lie
youtube
- Keep your hands off eizouken (2020) i was really trying to keep this list free of links to cr*nchyroll yt but there are no other uploads of this scene and I really need you all to see it. Not only is this anime GORGEOUS, its story is really good, the humor is funny and the characters are SO endearing. Very much an “anime for people who dont like anime”, the girls have realistic (and therefore unusual) designs, theres not a bit of fanservice in sight, just a feel good story about three friends making anime for passion and fun.
youtube
- angel’s egg (1985) okay so theres not a lot of cel animation in this list and you may be thinking, hey m.a., dont you always say cel animation is your favorite kind (you insufferable hipster)? but theres a reason for that. Because of how time consuming cel ani is, most cel anime that I would consider visually appealing (eva, rgu, kite, etc) do so by using their resources very smartly and creating evocative, striking, atmospheric imagery through a mixture if photography and direction. some of the most memorable images in evangelion are barely if at all animated (the holding cell shinji misato and ritsuko alternatively end up in, the escalators down into the bowels of NERV hq, the infamous elevator scene, and of course the still of shinji in unit 01 holding kaworu). Tldr cel animation is VERY pleasing to the eyes when its actually animated (see akira) and its unique limitations push directors to be especially creative and talented (the opposite of whats true for digital but that’s another rant) but most cel animated stuff is… well its pretty and its nostalgic but its not technically impressive from a pure animation perspective. but there are some exceptions. lo and behold: the entire angel’s egg movie by visionary director oshii mamoru, on youtube dot com.
youtube
- mononoke (2007) this is another one where i dont even need to say much. Just LOOK at it. the fact that this exists is a marvel.
youtube
- samurai champloo (2004) HA! you thought i was gonna put bebop on this list didnt you? well jokes on you. one day maybe i will write my “champloo is better than bebop, YES really, NO im not just being a hipster” rant but that day is not today. the trademark watanabe swagger and swashbuckling and the inventive and brilliantly animated fight choreography that characterizes his stuff are in their full glory here. this truly feels like looking at a real life fight between swordmasters - youre legit gonna have to watch at .5x or go back a bunch of times to catch everything they do. its glorious. also i want mugen and jin to sandwich me who said that.
youtube
ok im kind of tired of typing and i think I managed to cover at least my favorites so heres some honorable mentions: panty and stocking, kill la kill regrettably plus trigger needs at least a little shoutout, devilman crybaby yes its good yes i stand by it you can fight me on this but it wont go well for you, mars red, bocchi the rock but you’ve probably already seen it, mob psycho if you havent seen this yet what are you even doing, sayonara zetsubou sensei but im warning you its very anime, urotsukidoji if you’ve got the stomach for it lol.
Maybe I should make a list of anime with good and interesting animation so more ppl can get taste lol

Book: The Color Purple
   By Alice Walker
Film:   The Color Purple (1985)
The Color Purple is a 1982 epistolary novel by American author Alice Walker which won the 1983 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction and the National Book Award for Fiction. It was later adapted into a film and musical of the same name. The novel has been the frequent target of censors and appears on the American Library Association list of the 100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2000–2009 at number seventeenth because of the sometimes explicit content, particularly in terms of violence.
The Color Purple is a 1985 American epic coming-of-age period drama film directed by Steven Spielberg and written by Menno Meyjes, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning 1982 novel of the same name by Alice Walker. It was Spielberg's eighth film as a director, and marked a turning point in his career, as it was a departure from the summer blockbusters for which he had become known. It was also the first feature film directed by Spielberg for which John Williams did not compose the music, instead featuring a score by Quincy Jones, who also produced. The cast stars Whoopi Goldberg in her breakthrough role, with Danny Glover, Oprah Winfrey, Margaret Avery, Rae Dawn Chong, Willard Pugh, and Adolph Caesar.  Filmed in Anson and Union counties in North Carolina, the film tells the story of a young African-American girl named Celie Harris and shows the problems African-American women experienced during the early 20th century, including domestic violence, incest, paedophilia, poverty, racism, and sexism. Celie is transformed as she finds her self-worth through the help of two strong female companions

Friday, October 4, 1985
You were awakened by the bright sunshine coming in from the curtains. You groaned, wishing it would stop but at that moment, you remember where you were: at Eddie’s trailer in his bed with him. You turn and see him next to you, sleeping peacefully with his arm around your waist. You smiled at the serene moment and nuzzled back in. The moment you did, Eddie pulled you in closer, rolling to pull you back into his chest. You stay like that for a few minutes, almost ready to fall back asleep because of how warm he is and how comfortable you feel like this but you remembered something unfortunate: It was Friday and you had to go to school. You groaned lightly as you moved, causing Eddie to stir.
“Mmmmm….too early…” Eddie grumbled, tightening his grip on you.
“Eds, we gotta get up. We've got school today.” you said, slightly shaking him.
“Noooo, I don’t wanna,” he said defiantly.
“Not even if you have Hellfire tonight? You know you have to go otherwise your sheep will be disappointed.” you say teasingly. He opened his brown eyes, looking you over.
“Only if you wear a Hellfire shirt to show your support. I mean you ARE the Queen of the Freaks,” he says with a yawn.
“Fine yes, I will wear this exact shirt if you get up already,” you say with a giggle as Eddie groans, letting you go.
“Do you know how to roll a joint?” Eddie asks, wiping the sleep from his eyes.
“Yeah why do you ask?” you counter.
“I’m too tired to roll one for us and I trust you enough to let you into my shit,” Eddie says bluntly. He’s got a good point, you think as you grab the bag of weed from his dresser and a few papers. You hadn’t rolled in months so it took you a while for muscle memory to kick in but a few minutes later, Eddie returned to his room changed into his jeans, a Hellfire shirt and a fresh pair of socks while you held up your artwork on display with pride before lighting it up and inhaling.
“Don’t we have a quiz today?” Eddie asks you as he grabs his keys, wallet and lighter.
“Yeah a pop quiz in O’Donnell’s over what we read in class this week.” you say, exhaling your hit and handing it to him.
“Which was what?” Eddie asks
“Chapters five and six of The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald.” you state like its the most obvious thing.
“Greeaaat. Thanks for the heads up,” Eddie said with a sarcastic laugh at the end.
“Oh anytime Eds.” you retort.
“Wanna give me a run down on the drive to school?” Eddie asks, passing you the joint.
“Yeah alright but we have to get my car today after school because we BOTH have things to do after school today.” you warn, taking a hit.
“Yes ma’am. Whatever you say boss.” Eddie says as he goes into the bathroom. You took another hit and looked yourself over in his bedside mirror. You weren’t gonna lie: you loved the way you looked in his Hellfire shirt. You fluffed out your hair, giving into the bedhead today because you didn’t have the time or products to fix it. You took another hit as Eddie returned from the bathroom with his hair a little more tamed, taking the joint from you.
“If I’m driving with you, can we stop by my house on the way so I can grab my bookbag please?” you ask.
“Yeah sure,” Eddie said, taking his own hit. You finish messing with your hair and wipe off the access sleep from your face as Eddie finishes the joint, putting it out in the ashtray. “You ready Princess?”
“As I’ll ever be,” you say with a sigh as Eddie leads the way through the trailer. His uncle wasn’t home yet so the trailer was eerily quiet. You grab the tapes, making a note to return them later today before heading out the door with Eddie. The drive to your house was filled with you explaining the first part of the Great Gatsby’s plot to Eddie, who nodded along and asked basic questions.
“So this Gatsby dude is in love with this Daisy chick and she’s like the lost love of his life and these extravagant parties are a literal beacon of light calling out to see if she’ll show up?” Eddie asks as you arrive at your house.
“Yep. I read this book last summer so I’ve got you when it comes to the quizzes. I’ll be right back,” you say getting out of the van and running into your house. You were greeted by a very confused and concerned Mother.
“Y/N M/N L/N, where in the hell were you? I was about to come looking for you myself when you weren’t in bed! No phone call, no note, nothing?!?” Your mom rambled as she hugs you with a sigh.
“I’m sorry Mom. I was at Eddie’s last night watching movies and he didn’t want me to drive home tired after passing out on his couch,” you say. Your mom sighs, giving you a disappointed look.
“And you just forgot to call? I’m going to kill you one of these days, child. You can’t be doing that to me! I thought you’d be the next missing girl to some serial killer,” your mom said. Oh that’s where I get that from, you think to yourself as you hug her.
“I’m okay Mommy. I’m late for class and have a pop quiz but I’m okay.” you say.
“Okay baby hurry up and get going. Don’t forget about your shift tonight.” your mom says.
“I won’t mom! Love you!” you yell as you race up to your room, grab your school and race out the door again to get into Eddie’s van.
“Everything okay?” Eddie asks, seeing how you’re out of breath.
“Yeah, sorry. I forgot to call my mom so when I wasn’t in bed last night, she went into Code Yellow panic thinking I was a murder victim or something.” you say as Eddie takes off.
“Shit I’m sorry” Eddie says.
“It’s okay. She gets like this sometimes if I don’t tell her my every move or whereabouts. Sheriff Hopper has had to come find me a time or two last year.” you recall with a laugh, which causes him to laugh too. You look through his tapes and put in his Defenders Of The Faith album from Judas Priest. You listened on as the album played through your journey to school, putting you in a good mood as the Sentinel played over the speakers while he parked. Eddie turned off the car and you both got out, walking by a few different groups as you entered the grounds. Before long, you passed the jocks and one of Misty’s friends scoffed, taking one look at you.
“Ewww look guys: Y/N has officially joined the Devil’s Cult!” she said loudly, garnering everyone’s attention towards you. You refused to give her the time of day as you and Eddie passed.
“Aww maybe she can be the Queen of The Freaks” Misty said, loudly grabbing your attention. You took a deep breath and grabbed Eddie’s hand before turning around, facing the source of your problems over the last year dead in the eyes.
“I would rather be The Queen of The Freaks than played a fool by people such as you, you disgusting humans.” you spat, “So unless you have anything productive to add, keep my name and Eddie’s name out of your mouth or I’ll show you exactly how your precious Rob felt last Halloween” you say strongly.
“Are you…threatening me Y/N?” Misty asks, shocked at who you think you’re talking to.
“Oh no Misty…I’m promising you.” you say sweetly as you flip her off and walk away with Eddie still attached by the hand.
“Told you you were the Queen of the Freaks,” Eddie said as you were out of earshot.
“Yeah well you trademarked it; couldn’t let her think she had an original thought, could I?” you say as you walk to your locker.
“Very true, my Queen,” Eddie says as you spun in your combo, “I figured out where the campaign is going,” he announced proudly.
“Oh pray tell Master?” you say, opening your locker.
“The Cult Of Vecna,” Eddie whispered darkly after looking around for any listening little sheepies. It takes everything in you not to give away the fact you had played a campaign or two with the kids while babysitting them over the summers. But you decide it’s best to play dumb.
“Cult of Vecna? You’ll have to explain that one to me later.” you say coolly.
“With pleasure,” he said as the bell rang, “See you later?” he asked as you nod, grabbing your books as he walks away. You smile and head into your first class. Everything seemed to pass by slowly and was unable to hold your attention. Perhaps it was the stress of senior year in general or your stress from Life. Whatever the case, it felt like Chemistry dragged on. You tried your best to focus on the chemical reaction demonstration but Mrs. Click couldn’t hold your attention so you found yourself daydreaming about Eddie and the possibilities of what to do when you hang out soon. You had last night fresh in your mind and didn’t want it to leave.
Ever since you woke up this morning in Eddie’s arms, it was like you’re a whole other person. You feel warm and fuzzy on the inside. You couldn’t remember that last time you genuinely felt like that. Most of the day passed like this: you attempted to pay attention and your mind will pass its way over towards Eddie. By lunch time, he was all consuming your mind. You were grabbing lunch from the food court while Robin and Ali were discussing the finer points of their argument. You spotted Eddie at his usual spot, animatedly talked to his group about something that probably had to do with tonight. Oh shit, speaking of tonight…  you thought as you had almost forgotten about your sleepover with Ali and Robin.
“What time are you off tonight Y/N?” Robin asked, pulling you out of your daydreaming.
“I think I’m off between 8 and 9 so I’ll be coming over right after work,” you say as you stop and pay for your lunch.
“Oh man! She’s gonna miss West Side Story. If I’ve gotta sit through it, so should she!” Ali whined.
“Shut up! It’s a great movie. Romeo and Juliet storyline set in New York. Forbidden love, young love, disapproving parents.” Robin says as you follow them to their usual table.
“Robin there is a great reason you work at a movie store and it’s because you have an amazing, niche taste.” you compliment as you sit down in one of the chairs.
“Thank you Y/N. Now, Ali, now that we have all gathered around, are you finally going to tell us what happened with Steve yesterday?” Robin asked, turning towards Ali.
“No, she’s gonna leave us dying with antici–” you started to say dramatically
“Okay okay I’ll tell you, you drama queens.” Ali said with a laugh
“Pation!” you finished with a triumphant laugh.
“So he drove us to the corn maze and it felt like it took forever to even get there. Probably an hour or so in the car just talking the entire drive up there and everything felt normal. Once we got to the corn maze, we ran through it a few times and drank some cider before we were ready to leave. But…before we did leave, he stopped and kissed me!” Ali gushed as you and Robin squealed in excitement.
“Oh my god finally!!” Robin gushed.
“He asked me to go steady with him yesterday so I guess I’m now Steve Harrington’s girlfriend,” Ali said proudly.
“I’m so happy for you dude. It finally happened and you deserve to be happy with the guy who makes you feel that way,” you state.
“Thanks Y/N” Ali says.
“At least now that we know they’re together, instead of beating around the bush for months.” Robin says with a contented sigh.’
“Now to get you two dinguses significant others” Ali says with a raise of her eyebrows.
“Fuck right off, I don’t need it.” you lie.
“Oh please you do too.” Robin snapped back.
“Just let us help you find happiness Y/N” Ali said with a pout. You knew they wouldn’t stop until their mission was complete so you sigh.
“Fine but ONLY when I give you the okay to actually help me. None before. “ you state.
“Scouts honor,” they say in sync
“Besides we can talk more about it tonight at Robin’s sleepover extravaganza with fewer wandering ears.” Ali said, glaring at someone as they passed by.
“Okay so I gotta ask: What’s up with the Hellfire shirt?” Robin asked a few minutes later. You looked down at the black and white shirt and smile at the hand drawn design.
“Truth? I stayed at Eddie’s after we finished those movies last night and didn’t wanna show up in yesterday’s clothes. Plus it’s nice to support your friends like I did with you two last week during that pep rally at SEVEN AM,” you note.
“Okay those are really good points.” Robin said.
“So is that one his or yours?” Ali asked with a devilish smile.
“I’m not sure I understand nor like your line of questioning,” you joke.
“If it’s his, then that means something way different than if it’s your that he gave to you for keeps sake.” Ali said, overanalyzing the situation.
“Look at her, one day dating King Steve and she’s suddenly Dear Abby dishing out nuggets of wisdom left and right,” Robin jokes.
“It’s his shirt that I’m borrowing. I’ll give it back when I go get to my car,” you state as both of their eyes are on you.
“Carpooling already? My what a gentleman he’s turning out to be.” Ali says.
“I can’t lie there. He really is a gentleman.” you admit, thinking about how you have barely touched a door handle when in Eddie’s presence. Your uncle has always instilled in you that unless a man can open your doors for you, pull out your chair for you, wait on you to order first or a plethora of other checklist items he’s added over the years. But according to the list, Eddie Munson is a gentleman.
“Is it just me or is today dragging more than usual?” you say, toying with a french fry.
Y“Yeah..it can do that when you have a Boy on the brain.” Robin said.
“Shut up I do not,” you reply.
“You do too! I bet if we had different lunches, you’d be eating with Eddie and the Hellfire Club.” Ali retorted, shaking her head as she talked.
“Okay you’re not wrong.” you say as the bell rings, all of her thoughts clearing out as you get up to go to photography.
“My house after work Y/N!” Robin yells as she and Ali disperse. You head to your locker and open it, grabbing your camera as you hum to yourself. You notice a note and smirk to yourself, wondering who it is from. You shove all the big books into your locker and head to the art hall. The last bell rang and your teacher started her lecture about framing and how to properly set up a photo with an interesting point of view. As much as the lecture actually interested you, the note was burning a hole in your jean pocket. You slyly took it out and read it to yourself.
You look amazing in my shirt. We should make a habit of it ;) -Eddie
You giggled to yourself and tucked the note away before you got caught. You thanked your deity for the lights being off so no one could see the blush on your face. Fuck, Eddie really knew what the hell he was doinng when it came to you. You almost had to ask yourself: Is this just you imagining it or did you have some feelings for Eddie Munson? Yeah perhaps but would you ever admit it to another living soul? Fuck no!
The last two periods passed with your head in the clouds. Even with Eddie doing his best to distract you, you couldn’t help but semi obsess over the last few weeks and feel super happy with him. The quiz was super easy (since you read the book already) so you spent the rest of the period trying to help Eddie with his quiz on the down low while making dumb jokes and hearing Eddie talk about how excited he was for Hellfire tonight. Once the bell rang to release you from class, you stopped at your locker with Eddie in tow.
“Are you excited for your sleepover tonight?” Eddie asked as you grabbed your camera and History book.
“About as excited as you are for D&D tonight,” you say with a laugh.
“So very,” Eddie said, joining in on your laughter.
“What are you gonna do after D&D?” you ask, closing your locker.
“Probably go to Gareth’s and jam for a while or go back home and do some experimenting,” Eddie said, raising his eyebrows.
“Sounds fun, just please be careful with your experimenting,” you say softly. Eddie coos at your concern and wraps an arm around you.
“Oh I promise Princess. I’ll call your house as soon as I wake up tomorrow for proof of life,” he says, offering his pinky as you take it in yours, making a secret oath.
“So what do girls do during sleepovers? Is it like manicures, pedicures and pillow fights or more like ritual sacrifice and hive mind worshiping the Queen Bee?” Eddie asked, his tone getting more outlandish by the second.
“Mostly the first part plus movies, junk food, gossip about school and boys, give and receive advice. Play dumb games,” you say plainly.
“I’ve just never had female friends before so you’ll have to forgive my curiosity,” Eddie says sarcastically.
“No no it’s okay really. We’re pretty normal. It’s like a movie night but more feminine,” you say gently as you exit the school.
“Some might start to call you a Coven before long,” Eddie points out.
“Oh nooooo” you gasp sarcastically before breaking out into a witch-like cackle. “Too late Munson.” At this point, Eddie is laughing too as you walk around to his van.
“You are my best friend Y/N L/N,” Eddie states, almost like he had just figured it out for himself.
“Awww I’m flattered, Eds; truly. I know what that means coming from you and I appreciate you. You’re my best friend, Edward Munson.” you say, going to give him a hug as he opens his arms waiting for you. You collapse into him like you’ve done a thousand times before, his arms wrapping around you as you sink deeper into him, the leather jacket hiding your face as you arms wrapped around his back up to his shoulders. He took in a deep breath while hugging you close, one of his hands massaging your left shoulder while you embraced. After a few moments, you broke away and smiled at each other before continuing towards his van. The walk was spent in silence apart from the occasional giggle out of you from catching him looking at you. Once you got in the van, Judas Priest blasted picking up the mood from this morning.
“So can we hang out tomorrow?” Eddie asked.
“Don’t you have band practice?” you counter.
“Fuck…you’re right. Why don’t you come with me?” Eddie asked, pulling out of the parking lot and heading towards his trailer.
“Because I have a paper due on Monday I haven’t even started on the French Revolution and Chem homework to catch up on?” you say.
“Boooooo. Come on. Please? I’ll make sure you have snacks if you come.” Eddie tries
“How am I supposed to study with you playing metal?” You ask.
“You haven’t done it before? It’s crazy good. Like the fast tempos make the boring stuff go so much faster,” Eddie notes. You thought for a moment before sighing.
“Okay fine but it’s because I know you’re not gonna give up anytime soon,” you note.
“You know me too well m’lady,” he says laughing as you drive on, singing along to Love Bites and Eat Me Alive. You think to yourself that maybe you could make him a mixtape at some point for drives you accompany him on. You’re deep in thought as he pulls up to his trailer.
“Do you need anything from inside?” Eddie asks. You think for a moment but think against it.
“Can I grab my pumpkins tomorrow? I don’t wanna make you late for Hellfire.” you say.
“Of course Princess. You’ve got your car keys, house keys, camera, bag?” Eddie asks, going over a quick list of your things and you try to ignore the fluttery feeling in your stomach about it.
“Got it all Eds,” you say with a smile.
“Okay I’ll see you tomorrow?” Eddie asks.
“Yeah Eds, I’ll see you tomorrow” you say with a wave as you take the steps necessary to get to your car. You hop in and turn it on, Tears For Fears playing on the radio as you put it in reverse, wave bye to Eddie, who was watching your every move. You backed up and drove towards downtown. You debated going home to change but with your uncle as a boss, he was super chill as long as you showed up dressed appropriately, he wouldn’t say anything to you. The man was basically like the father you needed as opposed to the one you got. In the months since the separation, Uncle Dave has been the steady male presence at home that was very much needed. He was over every Sunday for Family Dinner, every birthday and graduation he was there with the cake and presents ready to go. He was the one who saw your brother Leo off to college; not your father.
You pull up next to his Impala and giggle, remembering how proud he was of Brandy, taking you out on the highway the day he got her for a day out on the road with his “two favorite girls”. You walked into the store and luckily it was just your uncle in the store behind the counter with Hall and Oates playing in the background. He always dedicated Fridays to pop songs and top 40 chart toppers since it was our busiest day of the week and you had to admit it was a solid strategy.
“Oh hey there Peanut! How was school today?” Dave asked with a gentle smile as he walked around the counter to hug you. You smiled, accepting the warm embrace.
“It was okay, I had a quiz in English and a paper due on Monday that I completely spaced out but other than that, it was fine.” you say, putting your bag behind the counter.
“So I need to let you off early tonight then,” Dave said with a nod.
“What? No. Don’t be silly. I can close tonight, I’m only missing out on West Side Story anyways if you really wanna help me out, you could let me off at like 8 and close up an hour early.” you say with a pout and your best puppy eyes. He sighed, knowing he can’t say no to you.
“Okay fine. I’ll close for you. You’re lucky my hot date isn’t until after your bedtime,” Dave jokes as he makes some funny movements as you throw a pick from the counter at him.
“Okay gross! I didn’t need that imagery in my head, you perv! Also I’m not 12? I don’t have a bedtime anymore,” you say as you shiver.
“Yet you sometimes still act 12?” Dave says cheekily as you throw another pick at his head. You spent the next hour bantering as you got settled into your shift. You stocked the new albums and walked around, moving albums back to their spots. The tape was already playing stopped so you put on some of Whitney Houston’s self titled album as the store started to pick up business wise, everyone looking for what’s new for their Friday night activities. You recognized most of them from school so you tried to be nice and professional. When a group of two couples left, your uncle came up to you.
“Not to pry but what’s going on with all the weird energy coming off you today? Normally you’re able to talk with kids your own age but today it’s like you’re putting up a wall. What’s up kiddo?” Dave said, putting his hand on your forearm and squeezing.
“I don’t know; I feel anxious for some reason but I thought I was hiding it well,” you say.
“Sure you were Peanut,” Dave said sarcastically as you hit him in his inked arm, hard.
“Listen you old fucker, I may or may not have said something to my ex’s girlfriend because her and her friends said something to Eddie and I first,” you say with a blush, knowing theres a lecture coming..
“Alright out with it. What did you say?” Dave said, removing his hand from your forearm and instead pinching the bridge of his nose.
“First her friend said I joined the Devil’s Cult because that’s what they call Eddie’s club,” you start saying as you signal to your Hellfire shirt. “Then Misty called me Queen of the Freaks since that’s what they always called Eddie so i told her I would rather be the Queen of the Freaks than a fool like her and that if she ever had Eddie’s or my own name is her mouth, I would be happy to remind her of what happened last Halloween.” you ramble nervously as you scratch your neck. He sits there for a minute or two, processing before he spoke again
“Your word choice could’ve been a lot smarter but I am proud of you for standing up for yourself and your friend,” Dave said as another pair of patrons entered the store. You sat back and let him take the lead on assisting them as you browsed through the tapes on your own, trying to come up with a playlist for the night. You found yourself in the soul and R&B section, debating on a Lionel Richie album for yourself as the store bell rang above the door. You saw a group of kids wearing Hawkins green walk in and you felt a pit in your stomach. Great, they’re here to harass me at work, you thought as they started to look around. You figured it would be best if you watched them from afar and let Dave deal with them once he finished with the couple. You spent the next few minutes looking between albums and the group of teens, making sure they weren’t gonna try to steal any of the merchandise. You decided to go behind the counter and wait as you kept any eye on the teens. One of them departed from the pack and started walking towards you. She was one of the nicer ones from your memory back when you were with Rob; always trying to make you feel included and safe at events where the girlfriends were required to show up.
“Um excuse me miss. Do you happen to have a copy of that new Billy Joel album?” she asked, blue eyes sparkling under her matching eye shadow.
“Oh yeah. Are you looking for Pressure or Uptown Girl?” you ask nicely with a sweet smile.
“Oh definitely Uptown Girl. I like totally can’t get enough of it,” she said with a smile.
“It’s called An Innocent Man and it should be in the pop charts or the rock section,” you try to recall.
“Oh my god, thank you so much. I had no idea what the album was called. You are a lifesaver,” she said, looking so relieved as she went back to her friends. You smiled as you saw your uncle’s customers come up to the counter for you to cash them out.
“Hi there. Anything else we can help you find?” you ask as they shake their heads no. You tell them the total and make their change, thanking them for coming in as they left and your attention was pulled back to the jocks, many of whom had already left, leaving the cheerleaders, including the nice blonde. You looked through the Rolling Stone magazine on the counter while you waited for them to make their decisions. You were reading through Sting’s interview when you heard sneakers squeaking, which caused you to close your magazine. You looked up at the girls and smiled as normal as possible, trying your hardest to be genuine and not fake.
“Hey I see you found your Billy Joel track! Want a bag to carry it out?” you ask, ringing up the price of the tape.
“Oh no thank you on the bag. You…um aren’t working next weekend are you…” the cheerleader asked, trying to come up with your name.
“Y/N and no, I’m off next weekend. Why what's up?” you ask as she grabbed her cash.
“I’m having a party for Homecoming and it’s sort of a Halloween party. Wanna come?” she asks as she hands you the cash. It dawned on you exactly who you she was in that moment: you were being invited to a party by The Chrissy Cunningham and she was a Billy Joel fan. This was the party Eddie was talking about earlier this week.
“Uh yeah sure I’d love to. Would it be okay if I bring a friend or two?” you say nervously as you hand her back her change.
“Sure sweetie, the more the merrier. Just be sure to be in costume.” she said with a sweet smile.
“Great! Uh thank you Chrissy for thinking of me. I appreciate it. Let me know how Billy Joel turns out for you,” you say with a smile.
“I will! See you next weekend Y/N” she said smiling. You waved her goodbye and almost collapsed as soon as they were out of eye shot.
“Oh my god! What!” you exclaim loudly with a laugh.
“So you’re definitely not working next Friday then,” Dave said, joining in on the laughter.
“Yeah apparently I’m gonna go to a party,” you say incredulously.
“Yeah, just be careful. Call me if anything happens. Good or bad, I’ll answer the call.” Dave said as you nodded and he went back to the storage room for a minute. You took the opportunity to dance like a fool out of excitement and then take a moment to collect yourself, your mind running wild with imagination of what would happen at the party.

Tolkien Adaptation Directory
I’ve recently returned from a there-and-back journey into watching every Tolkien adaptation I could find- mainly film, tv, and theatre- but I was more surprised to discover a corner of the fandom interested in watching them too! And more than anything, I want to share what I’ve found, and draw some attention to these amazing works. I firmly believe that every adaptation adds something to Middle Earth- whether it’s as big as a different character or plot interpretation, or as small as a new art style, they all make Tolkien’s stories just a little brighter.
This page has everything from the Peter Jacksons to Born of Hope, and from the Hobitit miniseries to the Finrod rock opera, and always room for more! I’ll absolutely keep updating as I find things, or if I’m sent anything!
Good luck on your adventures!
Tumblr media
For my own safety and sanity, this list is limited- if loosely in places- to film, television, and theatre. For an extensive music directory, please visit the Tolkien Music List or this wikipedia page. For other adaptations (i.e. radio dramas, video games), this wikipedia page is a good starting point.
Adaptations are listed by story, then country/language, and then year. Titles marked with a star (*) are my personal recommendations.

Dune 2021 it’s ... ok, but it should have been a series
I have listened to the audiobook so I might talk about spoilers or possible spoilers for the book and part 2.
Technically, it’s a masterpiece. The set design, the costume design, the cinematography is breathtaking.
Lady Jessica shines in those dresses, ugh the yellowish-orange one she uses when they arrive at Arrakis 😍. She looks so regal even when she’s not a noble-born nor a wife. You know when she steps into a room. Which is also part of Rebecca Ferguson’s acting. All the female costumes are extraordinary. The Bene Gesserit looked so intimidating! The men were ok too 😅, didn’t bother me, didn’t strike me. Like most male fashion, it’s alright.
I have my issues with the casting of Chalamet but it’s not about his acting. I’ll write about that in another post. But, he does an excellent job. He carries this regal air, proper of a duke’s son very well. And, although it’s clear he’s in his 20s, he has this innocence still with him. I love how he runs to greet his friends, breaking protocol 😆. I imagine the Gom Jabbar scene to be one of the most difficult scenes for him, cause how do you imagine that?
The soundtrack is superb! Even the seats vibrate because it was so loud. My only problem is that they chose high parts of the music at the same time people are talking. And then, people whisper a lot in this film. Like why?
I loved the attack scene. That was amazing and I saw it in a regular screen. In IMAX it must have been even more impressive. The shield visuals are really cool too. Much better that the 1985′s ones 😆.
The opening was great. I loved to see the Fremen POV, even though I missed Irulan. But I’m hoping (praying) that the sequels a lot of the Imperial family.
Now, the story is where it is flawed IMO. The trailers were misleading cause they didn’t say it was gonna be an incomplete story. No adaptation will ever live up to the original book, nor is it possible to put everything in a movie, even 2. However, I think Denis Villeneuve sacrificed too many important things. Many criticism against the movie is saying it’s too much exposition, world-building...I think we needed more of that exposition and world-building. And that’s why I keep saying this should have been a TV series. It could have been the next Game of Thrones!!!
There are so many important things that the movie takes for granted or just doesn’t even try to explain. For example, why the Duke didn’t marry Lady Jessica? First the Reverend Mother calls her “his wife” and then Leto is telling her “I should have married you.” Maybe they will address it in the next movie but I still would have liked a conversation about that here. Moreover, a big part of the set up is that they tried to make the Duke think Lady Jessica was conspiring against him. Here, they don’t do that and he is somewhat weary of her. Maybe I don’t remember that part.
When the Reverend Mother reminds her she was only suppose to bear daughters, it seemed she only wanted Paul to be the One. It might be implicit that she did it out of love. But in the book, the fact that she disobeyed because she loved the Duke makes her a heretic which is another important theme in the sequels (Irulan!). That better be in part 2. Because here it seems she did it for her own ambitions and much in accordance to the Bene Gesserit plan.
They also could have talked more about the rivalry between the Harkonnens and the Atreides. And how Jessica’s selfish decision fucked up any chance of peace through marriage. Also, what about Lady Jessica’s parentage? That’s a big deal! But again, maybe they will discuss that in part 2.
Speaking of Lady Jessica, why is she breaking apart all the time? I don’t really get why she was crying after Paul told her she was pregnant. Between her crying, the music and her whispering, it’s hard to understand the litany. I did like though that as she recite it, she became calmer. As far as I remember the only time where she cries is when they realize Leto is gone and she lets out a tear. Then she quickly stops cause it’s a waste of water. But here both Paul and Jessica are letting the tears fall. At least they did have the tent absorbing all of that so I guess it’s alright.
The movie also is not emphatic enough about the lack of water in Arrakis. I like the bit about the palm trees, but I don’t think it was enough. Everything about the Fremen revolves around water. I did like that they mentioned that the whole messiah is a fraud. “They see what they’re told to see.” That was a great line.
Also, it really bothers me when adaptations include elements just to have them there. Just to show they read the book, but stripping those things from its context and meaning. I’m gonna sound like such a book purist, but whatever. Like the late Duke’s portrait. In the book there’s a dialogue between Jessica and Leto where he knows she hated his father and doesn’t even want to put his painting on the dining room. And it’s even used to talk about her status as concubine in contrast to a wife. But here, the portrait is where Jessica and Paul are having breakfast. Which leads me to the biggest problem I have with this movie.
I hate that the victimized the Atreides! Of course, anyone against the Harkonnen would seem ok. But the reality is that the Atreides are like any other royal family with good propaganda. In Jessica’s words, the Duke is
cold, callous, demanding, selfish—as harsh and cruel as a winter wind. That’s the man shaped by the father.
In the movie that are loved because they’re the good ones? This makes me very doubtful of the sequel, cause Paul is not gonna be the hero. I wonder how DV will touch upon the billions of casualties in his holy war. What about the way Paul treats Princess Irulan?
Lastly, Chani. She is supposed to be a sweet woman. At least that’s what I remember. But here, Zendaya portrays her as a know-it-all, mean person. Why can’t Chani be strong and kind? Why does a woman need to act like a man, a very annoying one, to be seen as strong? Even with Irulan, there’s a bit in Dune Messiah were she kind of defends her (obviously before knowing she is poisoning her). When Paul insults Irulan’s writings, she defends them.
If I were the Academy, I would wait for part 2 to see if DV really told the story complete. Meanwhile they can praise the technical points.

Theories for Who These New Characters in the Season 5 Trailer Are
Tumblr media
We’ve seen this part of the trailer, and I thought to do some research and speculation. Now these are just loose guesses open for speculation based on the original 1985 series, so take this with a grain of salt. They could be new characters.
1. The girl on the right is Sweetbee
Tumblr media
Sweetbee has been mentioned once on the show while Adora was preparing for the princess prom, but I won’t rule her out since we still are on Etheria in season 5. Sweetbee’s origin story is basically her people needed a place to live, they were attacked by the Horde, Mermista saved her, and now she fights with the rebellion. I could not find any information as to what her powers are (besides flying).
2. The girl on the left (or maybe middle) is Peekablue
Tumblr media
Peekablue was mentioned to be dating Sweetbee so it would make sense they show up together. I couldn’t find much about Peekablue’s origin story, but according to the wiki she can use her powers to see to see to the edge of the universe (it’s described as an “all seeing” power, where she can see what something is doing at a time and where it is.) In one old episode she was kidnapped by Hordak to use her powers, so what if Horde Prime was using princesses from Etheria to get info?
3. These three are the Star Sisters
Now this one is debatable because (according to the wiki) we’ve SEEN them, but they’ve never said anything.
Tumblr media
In the 1985 series, they were sent away to Etheria and imprisoned because an evil sorceress was jealous of their beauty. Jewelstar could use gems to make armor, Tallstar could stretch her body, and Starla can detect danger (with the help of Glory Bird) and use light spells.
Adora has mentioned them while she was preparing for princess prom, as they were friends of Mermista, but not friends of Sweetbee.
According to the wiki, they appear at both the princess prom for a moment and appear in the war room mural. I believe these are different people due to the haircuts, but perhaps their design changed witht time. If they come back, I think their powers would be useful to the rebellion.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These are just theories so don’t hate, but either way this season will be as amazing as the trailer suggests. (But what happened to double trouble-)

Four Eighths
Pairing: Four x Eight (Reader) Word count: 6K+ Warnings: Language, drinking, teasing, smut. I told you we would be getting to the smut, just gotta have some patience is all! *Disclaimer.  I’m so sorry there has been such a long break between chapters for this story. Some of you may be aware, I’m a healthcare worker, and with Covid-19 at the moment, work has gotten extremely intense and busy as of late. And I just haven’t had the chance to write as much as I would like too!
Catch up on Chapters One Two Three Four Five Six
Chapter Seven: Sex on the beach
Tumblr media
The scent of Four’s mint toothpaste washes over you, the warmth of his breath caressing your lips. If either one of you were to lean in just slightly, your lips would touch, and heaven knows just how amazing that would feel! You can barely keep your eyes open, your lids fluttering on their own accord every few seconds. Slowly, as if he were doing it just to spite you, Four leans in, your already impossibly close lips now a mere hair width apart. It’s happening, he’s going to kiss you surely, you just know it! “You’re wasting the hot water.”
You blink your eyes open rapidly, pupils widening in shock at the words Four had just uttered. You had expected something sweet, maybe a term of endearment before the main event, but oh no, why would anything go your way?! “I beg your pardon?”
He’s grinning now, that damned infuriating cocky smirk that seems to be reserved solely for you. “I said, you’re wasting the hot water. You’re not the only one who will want a shower today.” He steps back from you, leaving the space he had occupied feeling cold and empty.
You can hear his words echoing around inside your skull but you can’t seem to quite understand them, your brain far too frazzled from the daydream it had conjured up. Soft lips locked with yours, fingers gripping curled blonde locks as your bodies press against the bathroom wall….. “Hot water?”  You sound like an idiot, and with the glazed far off look in your eyes, you certainly look the part too.
Four shakes his head, shaggy hair swaying as he does so, his sparkling eyes meeting yours one last time. He knows exactly what he’s doing to you, and he’s loving it. “Have a shower Eight.” He takes a few steps backwards, watching you intently before turning on the spot and marching out of the women’s bathroom.
You feel all the air leave your lungs the moment Four exits, your brain beginning to unscramble itself slowly. “That mother fu- I’ll kill him one day, I’ll bloody do it!” You mutter as you untangle your towel and step into the steady stream of water feeling the now lukewarm spray surround you. He was right though, not that you would admit it, the water was far less warm than it was when you had started, and it was only growing progressively colder.
*****
“Are you guys actually taking me to a bar, or am I about to be murdered in the desert?” You hiss under your breath, turning a sideways glance to Five as she walked besides you. Ahead of you, bunched together were Four, One and Seven, and just behind you were Two and Three.
“Now why would I answer you truthfully?  If we were going to murder you, where would the fun be in having you know the plan?” Five smirks, patting you on the shoulder lightly, her nails scraping against the faded denim jacket you had hoisted on, on your way out of your trailer.
There’s no stopping your eyes rolling, a snort of a laugh breaking the silence which had settled over the ragtag group. Five grins at the sound just as the men ahead of you look behind themselves to see who had made the noise. Your hands fly up to your face, clasping over your mouth and nose, there’s no questioning who had snorted. “Real lady like Eight.” One grins, the look only broadening as a blush creeps up your face.
“Fuck you! I’m very dignified I’ll have you know!”
“Well clearly! I mean, with language like that I don’t see how there was ever any doubt?” Four jumps in, his eyes meeting yours instantly. His left hand it balled into a loose fist by his chin, with his thumb resting against his lower lip. The pose only causes your attention to be drawn to his lips once again, and if the gleam in his crystal eyes was anything to go off of, Four knows exactly what he was doing. Your mind is back in the bathroom, you can practically feel the steam of the shower surrounding you, and the heat is only slightly less than that of the heat you could feel from his body.
“Hey, to get to the bar you actually need to walk.” Five raises her brows at you, now a fair distance ahead of you, even Three and Two had surpassed you. Blinking rapidly, you look behind you to ensure that the couple had in fact walked past you, when had that happened? When had you stopped walking?
“Sorry, I – I actually have no excuse for that…” You shrug, power walking to catch up with Five once again. No one else seemed to have noticed your sudden inability to walk, or at the very least they all had the good grace to not mention it directly to you, which was perfectly fine by you, it meant that the silence which had fallen over the group allowed you time to plot. If this was how Four wanted to play things, then fine, so be it! Two can play at this game.
*****
The bar was quite literally in the middle of nowhere, and despite the fact that you had driven past it on numerous occasions, you had never known it to be anything other than an old farmhouse. It certainly looked the part, but you had never seen it at night, and the appearance had changed entirely when you finally arrived. It appeared to be a popular spot for truckers to stop for a couple of rounds, before retiring to their trucks for the night, then starting their journey once again come daybreak. A large green neon sign sat in one of the windows, flashing ‘Open’ to any passersby, and you found after staring at the sign for too long you had begun to form a migraine.
“If you’re finished looking around, we can actually go inside.” Four was behind you, standing close enough that you could actually feel him pressed against your back, as his voice whispered against your ear.  The gentle breath of his voice was enough to cause your hair to tickle the shell of your ear as he spoke.
You turn on the spot, your resolve growing rapidly by the minute, he’s not the only one who can tease. The look of surprise on his face was almost enough to cause you to grin, but you school your features before he can catch on. Your tongue darts out to wet your lips, and you carefully monitor as Four’s eyes follow the motion intently, his eyes growing dark at the simple movement. “I was just about to head in. I’ll see you in there.”  You practically purr, making a show of moving just a fraction closer to him, so your chests were pressed together for just the briefest of moments. Moving away you swear your heart is about to leap out of your chest, given it was beating so rapidly. There’s a part of you that considers turning back to look at Four, but you think better of it, and considering you can’t hear him moving yet you can only assume he was struggling to process what had just happened. As if to add insult to injury, you add in just a little extra sway to your walk, your hips moving in an overtly sexual manner.
The interior of the bar was exactly how you would imagine, varying shades of brown bricks lined the walls halfway, meeting with gray corrugated steel before tapering off into chocolate brown skirting boards. The floor matched that of the skirting, but had obvious sun stains from where the hot desert sun had streaked in through the large windows. Sitting against the furthest wall was the bar itself, with shelves upon shelves packed with all assortments of liquor, and surrounding it were dark gray bar stools, with faded maroon cushions. A pool table sat in one corner, with a small congregation of people milling around, some with a pool cue, and others not. Hanging on the wall above the pool table was a decently sized television, which appeared to be airing the top ten touchdowns of the last decade. In the opposite corner was a jukebox which had definitely seen better days, though still managed to play a crackly version of 1985.  Small circular wooden tables were scattered around the bar, the chairs surrounding them were similar to those at the bar only the cushions were a navy-blue fabric. Finally, set up along the opposite wall to the bar were multiple booths, made of the same chocolate wood as the floor, and covered in maroon cushions.
Taking up one booth sat the Ghosts, all cramped together like a tin or sardines. On one side sat Two pressed up against the wall with Three beside her, and Seven on the edge. The opposite side had One against the wall, Five in the middle, and space for you to sit beside her. “Took you long enough, where have you been?” One smirked, peering at you from over the top of Five’s head.
You shrug lightly, dumping your small purse on the ground and sliding into the seat beside the Doctor. “Just looking around is all, I’ve never been here before remember.” You chew on your lower lip for a moment, opting to keep your next words silent, though it doesn’t stop you from thinking them –‘May never come back either, depending on how the mission goes.’
“Lay off, besides if you’d care to notice, Eight isn’t the only one who’s late to arrive.” Three chuckles, jerking his head towards the blonde who was striding over to your booth. Once stood at the head of the table, you watch carefully as his eyes passed over your group, irises growing dark as they fall and linger on you. You very nearly blush under his intense gaze, but your willpower holds up, and soon enough Four is averting his gaze from your heated one.
“Sorry mate, you’ll have to drag a chair over from another table.” Seven shrugs, drumming his calloused fingers against the sticky tabletop.
Four does as suggested, but not before making his complaints known. “We never used to have to bring extra chairs around, six people fit just fine at one booth.”  To the others, Four appeared totally serious in his grumbling, however you knew differently. As he walked over to another table, his shoulders remained slightly slumped, a sure way to know he was feeling comfortable and relaxed, if he were truly put out by the need of grabbing a chair, his entire body would’ve tensed up.
Once Four had situated the chair at the head of the table, two things happen. Thing one, his chair is closer to your side of the booth, and you realise that you only have to move your leg slightly to touch him, and thing two comes in the form of One making an announcement. “Who’s getting the first round then?”
Your eyes grow wide at his words, and they dart around at the others at the table frantically. No one seemed surprised like you, or if they are, they are far better at hiding it. “I – I didn’t bring any money with me….” You whisper to Five, who only smiles softly in response.
She turns her head to whisper her reply against your ear, and in the moment you look to Four, lifting one brow and smirking at the blonde. He can’t keep his eyes off you, and you suddenly realise that perhaps by taking control outside just before, you had turned him on more than initially intended. “Oh no, he doesn’t mean it like that. One always pays, we just all take it in turns of going up to the bar to order.”
You breathe an audible sigh of relief, brushing your hair back behind your ear as you do so. “I’ll go, if no one else will offer?” You smirk, already starting to stand from the booth, pressing both palms against the table to push yourself up.
One slides his card across the table, a move that would’ve looked undoubtedly cool if it weren’t for the fact that it got caught on a dried ring of soda on its way across to you. Resulting in Three picking the card up and passing it to you instead. “Does anyone have any orders in particular?”
“You get to order for the table, that’s one of the rules with these final briefing drinks. Whoever goes up to order, gets to decide on what we all drink. At least for that round.” Two smiles, the harsh lines around the corners of her lips softening for a moment. There’s no stopping the grin which slides across your lips, your eyes casting across the people you had begun to call your friends. Finally, they land on Four, who was doing an excellent job of pretending to be engrossed in a conversation with Seven. A plan was forming in your mind, a plan which if all went well, would result in Four doing practically anything for you.
Sliding away from the booth, you pocket One’s card, being sure to brush your arm against Four’s shoulder as you walk by him, heading over to the bar.  In the few short minutes you had been sat with the Ghosts, the bar had grown progressively busier, most tables now occupied, and a small crowd gathered around the bar itself. You wait patiently for your turn to order, grinning at the woman who serves you. “What can I get ya lovey?” She smiles, deep set lines around her eyes and mouth showing she seemed to have spent a great deal of her life smiling.
You know exactly what to order, and the woman nods her head, brunette ponytail swinging behind her, as she turns to work on your order.  When the drinks are finished, she sets them down on a black plastic circular tray. “You guys going to be ordering a lot tonight?”
“Hm? Oh, yeah we’re going to be here for a pretty long time I think.”
“Keep the tray then, just bring it up each time you order so we can use it again for ya.” She grins at you, picking up the card reader from bellow the bar and handing it to you, where you tap One’s card and await the ‘beep’ of approval.  “Enjoy sweetie!”
You can’t help but return the woman’s infectious smile, awkwardly picking up the tray and balancing it over both hands. The tray was full with three different sizes of glasses, had you gone slightly overboard with the first round of drinks? Maybe… But to be fair, whenever you would go out with your friends when you were alive, they used to always complain that you ordered boring drinks for the first round. Arriving back at the booth, you stand beside Four, bending over to place the tray on the table. Perhaps you were being over the top with your blatant teasing, but when your hip brushes against the side of his torso and you feel his entire body stiffen against you, you know you’re doing the right thing… Or at the very least, the fun thing!
“Fuck yeah! Look at you little Miss life and soul of the party!” Three cheers, clapping his hands together twice as the conversations at the table fall silent, all eyes watching as you distribute the drinks. Seven shots of tequila are passed around, until one rests before everyone, then comes the main event. A glass of Kraken rum and coke for yourself, two glasses of Wild Turkey American Honey on ice each for One and Seven. Corona with lemon for Three and one with lime for Two, and a glass of Malibu on ice for Five. And finally, the piece de resistance, one sex on the beach for Four.
Four stares at the peach coloured cocktail, the slice of orange, and maraschino cherry seeming to mock him from their decorative position. “I- uh… What?”
“Don’t be shy Padme! We all know how much you like peach flavoured things! And besides, you mentioned a while ago that you’d never tried sex on the beach, and well, you’re missing out…” Your voice grew low as you sat back down, and you pay no mind to everyone’s eyes watching you and Four’s interaction.
“I don’t believe cocktails were the topic of that particular conversation…” He whispers, biting down on his lower lip, as his eyes gloss over.
There’s no use in saying anything else, words were pointless at this stage, you had Four exactly where you wanted him. His mind was somewhere far away from the bar, likely somewhere on a beach… Once settled back down, you smile to yourself, turning your attention to the others at the table as Four remains silent. “What shall we drink to?”
The others do a good job at pretending they hadn’t witnessed what has transpired between you two, though you were positive Five had some questions for you, though you knew she would pick what would likely be the most inconvenient time to ask them. “How about we drink to a good mission? Seems appropriate?” Seven offers, his eyes darting between the dazed Four, and the grinning you.
One nods his agreement as you pass him his card back, his head nodding in thanks as he pockets it. “Sounds like a good reason to drink to me!”
“As if you need a reason.” Three smirks, quirking his brows.
“What’s that supposed to mean?”
“Children please, this is a public place. One of the few public places in the area we are still welcome in might I add. If you want to fight, save it for when we get back home. But just so you are both aware, I refuse to patch either of you up if you hurt yourselves!” Five warns, her deep brown eyes cast in a firm, almost maternal glare.
Both men stop their bickering, looking like scorned children. “So, to a successful mission then?” Two pipes up, raising her shot glass into the air.
Five other glasses rise into the air, all eyes turning to Four, who had not yet raised his glass. “Psst, Skywalker, we’re making a toast.” You mock whisper. The blonde blinks rapidly, shadowed eyes meetings yours as he reaches for his shot, before raising it up.
“Let us drink to a successful mission. Eight, I know we’ll get the Lushnick’s, I promise you we will!” Two nods, a half smile tugging the corner of her lips.
“To killing the Lushnick’s!” You chime in, keeping your voice low enough so only your group could hear you.
“To killing the Lushnick’s!” Six voices echo, before you all down your tequila shots.
*****
From the first round onwards, the joke of buying Four a sex on the beach had stuck, the only time he was allowed to drink anything different was when it was his turn to order, and he had returned with an Evan Williams over ice. It was adorable to see what he returned with for you, it was almost as if he was trying to get back at you by placing a fruit tingle on the table. The lilac and blue cocktail a stark contrast to the various glasses of whiskey which sat before the other Ghosts.  “Oh Four! How did you know?” You cooed, batting your lashes up at him.
“Know what?” His lips were parted in a perfect ‘o’, and the look of confusion on his features was to die for.
“That I love fruit tingles!” You lean forward, creeping your hand across the table so you could rest it over the top of his knuckles, clasping your fingers around his for a few seconds. “In fact, if it weren’t for a fruit tingle, I never would’ve gotten laid… Hmmm, James, now he was something special.”
Just as quickly as you had placed it there, you pull your hand away from Four, before anyone else at the table could notice. At this point however, you would hardly care if someone did mention your actions, they were having the desired effect on Four, and that was all that mattered. Four had barely been able to sit still from the moment you had first returned with the drinks, he would squirm in his seat, and flush whenever he caught your eyes lingering on him for longer than would usually be considered appropriate.
One returned with a new round of drinks a short while later, once again depositing the same cocktail before Four, who no longer wore a look of disgruntlement when he looked at the peach drink. In fact, he went straight for the straw, taking a deep drink immediately. A small smirk quirks your lips as you watch him, and beneath the table you rub your foot against his ankle, kicking your shoe off awkwardly to achieve a small amount of skin to skin contact. “So tell us Eight, how exactly did One find you?” Three asks, clasping his fingers together, and locking them under his chin.
Your eyes drag away from Four, casting across the table before finally settling on One, a wicked grin tugging at your lips. “Oh, I was robbing One’s bank account for a while. So basically, he hired me so I would stop stealing from him.” You shrug.
There’s an eerie silence which befalls the table, suddenly all eyes are focused on you with a great deal of interest. “Hold up, that was you who was draining his account?” Two gasps, her eyes shining bright with glee.
“Heh, yeah, it was! So now instead of stealing his money, he pays me to be here.”
“Eight, you’re my fucking hero!” Five squeals, wrapping one arm around you in a side hug.
“What? Why?” There’s no hiding the look of confusion which crosses you features at Five’s outburst.
Seven, as always was the voice of reason, his soothing voice carrying over the laughter which was chorusing over the table. “Do you have any idea how confused and upset One was? The entire time you were taking his money, he would write up on the board in the briefing room his bank balance each week. At first, it was only going down by a little bit, but then I guess you got a little too bold, because the next thing we know, One’s going around accusing us all of having stolen his card and buying useless shit!”
Now it’s your turn to laugh, bowing your head and resting your chin against the table. “I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again! In my defence, technically One’s dead! I didn’t think a dead man would miss his money!”
“Well this dead man, really missed his money.” One grins affectionately at you.
“So, you’re part of the team now so One can more or less babysit you, and stop you from taking any more money from him, is that right?” Three chuckles.
Your shoulders shrug half heartedly, as you slowly pick yourself up from the table. “I suppose so, not that that will necessarily stop me however.”
“Hey, what’s that supposed to mean?” One cries, sloshing the amber liquid in his glass as he places it back on the table with too much force.
Beneath the table, you drag your foot further up Four’s leg, your toes brushing against his calf as you go up. “Never you mind. What I spend your money on without your permission is between me and my online shopping.”
As the conversation returns around you, you focus back on Four. Perhaps it was the copious amounts of alcohol you had consumed which made you so bold, though you would never be positive. “Do you wanna see a neat trick?”
Four’s brows crease in the middle, and he tilts his head to the side. “What are you on about?”
“You heard me! Do. You. Want. To. See. A. Trick?” You repeat, punctuating each word with your foot climbing ever further up his leg, now resting against his thigh.
You watch him gulp, his adams apple bobbing as he once again stirs in his seat. There was a blush creeping steadily further up his neck, it had started somewhere beneath his collar, and was now nearing his chin. “Sure, what’ve you got for me love?” You can see him desperately trying to regain control over this situation, but nothing was working for him, he was entirely at your mercy.
Reaching forwards, you pluck the cherry out of his glass, popping the entire thing in your mouth, stem and all. You make quick work of eating the actual cherry, before working your tongue around the deep red stem. Four can’t keep his eyes off your mouth, that is until…. You slide down your seat until you are able to reach new areas with your foot. It’s a risky move, at any moment someone either at your table, or another patron of the bar could clock on to what you were doing. But you were feeling bold, and so far, Four hadn’t voiced any complaints. Your foot creeps higher, until your toes press gently against the bulge in his trousers, an audible groan slipping from his lips. You had never done anything like this before, and you were honestly not sure what you were supposed to do next.  However, with your little trick now complete, that at least brought you some time.
Slowly, you open your mouth, pressing your tongue out slightly and presenting a carefully knotted cherry stem. This time, Four’s gasp is loud enough for the entire table to hear. “Ungh….” The knotted stem along with the gentle caress of your foot, was enough to have Four about ready to jump the table to kiss you.
“You alright there mate?” Seven asks, a genuine look of worry crossing his features. While Five simply turns to you, a knowing look dancing through her eyes.
“Ugh, yeah. I’m fine.” Four stammers out, raising a hand to brush through his hair.
Seven nods his head, though he doesn’t look entirely convinced by Four’s strained answer. Beneath the table, Four creeps his hand down to his lap, carefully wrapping his fingers around your ankle, and helping to guide your foot.  He was doing little to lessen the ever growing bulge, but he was certainly bringing himself closer to release, which was all he could really think about now.
“Oh god, this is a bit of a depressing song don’t you think?” Two sighs as cat’s in the cradle auto plays on the jukebox
“I wouldn’t go that far. Sure it’s kinda sad, but it’s pretty good…” You shrug, allowing Four to use your foot as he saw fit bellow the tabletop.
“I’m with Eight on this one, it’s a classic.” Four agrees, though his voice is strained, and there’s a guttural quality to it.
“Thank you, see great minds think alike!” You giggle, your breath hitching in your throat as Four brushes his finger along the arch of your foot.
“Great minds, or young minds?” Three smirks across at One, who both chuckle.
Five folds her arms across her chest, watching you and Four intently, before turning her gaze to One, Two and Three. Seven remained team Switzerland, though Five would settle this once and for all. “It truly is an excellent song! Come on, this is the best part too!”
All eyes are suddenly on Five, who had closed her eyes and was swaying along to the song. “And the cat’s in the cradle and the silver spoon-”
You bite down on your lip, slowly sliding your foot out of Four’s lap and back do the floor. “Little boy blue and the man in the moon-” You join in with her.
Four shakes his head, whether it was in disappointment to the sudden lack of your contact, or the fact that all roads in his life had lead him up to this point, you would never know. He lifts one eyebrow, cocking his head to the left as he regards Seven with a half grin. “When you coming home Dad, I don’t know when-” Both men chorus in with you and Five, the four of you grinning broadly at each other.
With a defeated sigh, One, Two and Three finally give in, joining with you all for the end of the chorus. “But we’ll get together then. Yeah, you know we’ll have a good time then…”
There was something bitter sweet about singing all together, the niggling thought of what tomorrow would bring slowly worked its way to the forefront of your brain. Tomorrow you would have your final briefing, and then, it would be into the lions den for all of you. For all you know, you could be about to send everyone into a suicide mission. But for now, for now there was happiness, there was signing, and if the look in Four’s eyes had anything to say, there was also lust.
There was an odd silence which fell over the group now, almost as if no one quite knew where to go next, or how to continue on from what had just happened. Ever the lady, you stand abruptly from your seat, stripping off your denim jacket, and folding it onto your seat. “I’ll be back!” You declare too loudly, shuffling away from the table and making your way through the bar.
“Is Eight only wearing one shoe?” Seven queries, frowning at your lopsided walk across the bar.
Five peers under the table, spotting your other shoe by your purse. “She sure is!”
“I’m going to get some air, I’ll be back.” Four mumbles, pushing away from the table himself, before following the same path as you a few minutes later.
Behind the bar was a door which lead to a corridor, one you hadn’t notice on your first inspection of the building. Inside stood four doors, two for the male and female bathrooms respectively, one for the cleaner’s cupboard, and another leading to apparently nowhere, at least that was your assumption, given the lack of signage. You make your way into the bathroom, taking a few minutes to check yourself over in the mirror above the sinks.  Your hair and makeup had remained relatively pristine, though there was a wild look in your eyes, one you hadn’t seen there before. Shaking your head twice, you finish off in the bathroom, before stepping out into the corridor once again. You can’t help yourself; the idea of an unmarked door was just too good of an opportunity to pass up, you simply had to find out what was behind there.
Reaching out, you pull the door open, and suddenly you’re met with a gust of cool night air, the smell of rain filling the air around you. The sky however was perfectly clear, void of any clouds, and instead, covered in a blanket of sparkling stars. Mixed with the scent of rain, was something you hadn’t smelt since you had ‘died’, the smell of cigarette smoke. Casting your gaze around at the few outdoor tables and chairs, you spot a lone figure, the puff of smoke coming from them. Stepping closer, you easily spot who it was, even in the dull light of the moon his blonde curls were easily recognisable. “Oh, how ironic. Behind door four is Four!” You laugh way too loud, especially for how terrible the pun was. But in your drunken state, to you it was the funniest thing anyone had ever said!
Four turns to look over his shoulder, a broad grin slipping across his lips as he plucks the cigarette from between them, exhaling a deep puff of smoke. “You’re missing the party inside. I think one more round of shots, and we’ll be able to convince Three to perform karaoke.
Shaking your head no, you strut over to Four, the same hip swaying you had done on the way into the bar earlier, now far less sexy, a lot more drunk. However, you made it to your destination none the less. “I think I like the party out here better.” You purr against his ear, straddling his lap as you feel Four’s hands automatically come up to rest against your waist.
Immediately, you can feel what little control he had over himself come crumbling down. His cock is pressed against the front of his trousers once more, and you grin to yourself as you make a point of circling your hips against him gently. The groan that slips from his throat is entirely pornographic, and it leaves you aching for more. “Ei-Eight…”
“Yes Four?” You giggle, circling your hips twice slowly, and once firm causing the blondes eyes to roll back in their sockets, and his head to tilt backward.
Leaning forward, you trail your tongue along his exposed throat, using the tip to follow every line carefully, until you reach his chin. “Should I go further?” You whisper, your breath fanning across his lips, just as his had back in the bathroom. The bathroom, the snake… It all felt like such a long time ago now, though it had only been hours, and not the weeks it felt like.
“God yes… Don’t stop. Please, keep going.” Four whines, his lips parting into a pout, as you press your palms against his chest, fingers clutching into the fabric of his shirt.
A wicked smirk overtakes your features, and ever so slowly you pull away, using your grip on Four’s shirt to pull him up with you. “You know, I don’t think I will actually…” With that, you carefully peel yourself off his lap, straightening yourself up, and taking a few steps away from the panting man.  “You should take a few minutes to cool down before you join us inside again.” You giggle, before turning on your heel and flouncing back inside the bar.
*****
“Why do we always insist on walking?” Five whines from the back of the group, dragging her feet through the dust as she walks.
“Well how else are we s’posed to get home? UBER doesn’t service this far out.” Two mutters, her fingers locked with Three’s as they walk at a slow pace. No one would dare say anything about their blatant display if their relationship, the only person who would was One, but he was far too drunk to even notice.
“Well somebody could drive next time!” Five suggests, her voice growing less powerful and drowsier by the second.
You look over your shoulder to the Doctor who was only a small ways behind you. “And who do you suggest stays sober to drive? Surely not you, Miss watch me do eight shots of vodka in a row!”
“Well obviously not me! How about Four? He could drive!”
Four, who had been awfully quiet since your little encounter outside, turned to look back at Five, his lips quirking as if to respond, before thinking better of it. Instead, he turned to face the front once more, picking up his pace so to arrive at base faster.
After another ten or so minutes of trudging, you a eventually make it back to base in one piece, though your aching ad blistered feet beg to differ. “Good night everyone!” Five calls out, as she hangs out of her trailer door, with one foot planted on the stairs and the other on the ground.
“Go to bed you looney!” Seven grins, waving goodbye to her.
“Sweet dreams Five.” You smile, blowing her a kiss, to which she pretends to catch.
After that, Five closes the door behind her, the lights in her trailer all turning off almost immediately. Next, Two follows Three into his trailer, neither being subtle about what was about to happen in the slightest. One stumbles into his own trailer, just as Four and Seven do the same, leaving you to find your own.
Once safely inside, you strip off your jacket and shirt, shuffling around your drawers in search of some fresh pyjamas. The door to your trailer remained open, allowing the pleasant night air to clear out the musty old air which had accumulated there. Just as you find a night shirt, you hear a voice clear behind you.
Whirling around on the spot, your hands instantly ball into fists ready to strike, only lowering to your sides when you see Four standing by your mini bar fridge. “If you thought you would tease me like that all night, and not have this coming…. Oh baby, you’ve got another thing coming.
^^^^ I’m not going to say sorry for yet another cliffhanger... Besides, I think we all know where we’l be headed in chapter eight (If you’re expecting anything other than smut, you will be sadly mistaken)

Girls Just Want to Have Fun (1985)
Tumblr media
Dir. Alan Metter
Classic 80′s dance movie. Now story wise, it’s only okay, but it’s still a great movie to watch when you feel down. Sarah Jessica Parker in this is such a little cutie, she really is an amazing actress.
trailer: https://youtu.be/dMYPLHH1r28
trigger warnings for the film: Over bearing parents, slightly heavy making out, 80′s bullying, some mentions of poverty

If you are ever so inclined - I'd be very interested in your horror recommendations.
This got…probably more involved than you intended. :D It was a good procrastination tool/distraction from A Thing I didn’t want to do though, and I had fun revisiting some of these old trailers.
This ended up really long. I’m sorry. I don’t know why I’m like this.
“The New Golden Age”
[These are what I’m talking about when I talk about us entering in a new golden age - really genre bending, specifically out to subvert tropes, make social statements, and empower people who have been shut out by horror in the past.]
Jordan Peele - Get Out (2017) and Us (2019)
Ah, Jordan Peele. The master of the comedy to horror turn. Get Out was the most fun I’ve had watching a horror movie in a long time. I love how it really fits itself to classic tropes but subverts them by flipping the genre and race dynamics. (Daniel Kaluuya’s character embodies the ‘Final Girl’ trope.)
Us fucked me up. Like, woke up at 3am thinking about it, couldn’t really look at Lupita Nyong’o for a while. The remix of the song that plays over the trailer literally gives me goosebumps. It freaked me out, so much. That one is a genre bender - you think you’re watching one thing (a classic home-invasion type trope with some weird mystery to it) and then the final scene basically upends everything you thought you were watching. Fucked. Me. Up.
Ari Aster - Hereditary (2018) and Midsommar (2019)
I’ve been talking a bunch about how much I loved Midsommar. It’s gorgeous visually, Ari Aster is so great at just letting things hang and letting tension build and build - and it was the first horror movie I think I’ve ever felt weirdly empowered by. Like, similar to when I saw Captain Marvel, I walked out of the theater like “is this how men feel all the time?” Hereditary is probably a better movie overall, not counting the fact that it was practically made for me. At its core it’s a grief drama, a phenomenal portrait of mourning…and it’s also really fucking scary. Those slow-tension building scenes are really used effectively in Hereditary.
I also think it’s interesting because Ari Aster is keeping pace with Jordan Peele, but did it in the opposite order. Hereditary is the genre-bender - you kind of think it’s a family drama/psychological horror for most of it, and then it takes a hard turn and makes you question everything you were watching. Midsommar is more on-genre norms - it’s essentially the classic ‘bunch of terrible people getting picked off one by one’ trope (I don’t know if there’s a better name for that), but by applying folk horror and really centering female characters as both pro- and an- tagonist, it does a lot of unexpected things.
Robin Aubert - Les Affamés (”The Ravenous”) (2017)
It’s a zombie movie, but it’s more than that. This movie is so layered. I saw it at a festival when it first came out and then we watched it again this year on St. Jean-Baptiste (Québec national holiday) because we wanted to be #OnTheme. (And to celebrate St. Jean-Baptiste without having to interact with crowds) and it kind of clicked what it was doing. It’s really about the absorbing of difference into the dominant, hegemonic culture and the struggle for marginalized individuals to survive. Robin Aubert has a couple others I haven’t seen yet, but have heard good things about and are on my list. I saw a critic call his main brand ‘pastoral terror’ (terreur pastorale) which I absolutely love as a concept.
Alex Garland - Annihilation (2018)
Some people might argue with me if this is horror or not, if it’s sci-fi, but I think it’s body horror. And it’s beautiful body horror! See this is what I’m here for. Body horror is not just gore - there’s not a lot of blood in this movie. Body horror is about distortion and the grotesque. There’s this one scene that still gives me chills when I think about it and Tessa Thompson’s final scene is beautiful body horror at its finest. (There was also a really similar scene in Midsommar, so I clearly know what I like.) The soundtrack is also phenomenal.
[I had a whole rant about the book series, which I hated, here, but it was getting long and derailing so I cut it out. the tldr is I hated the book.]
“Classics I actually Enjoy”
[I don’t always love what appears at the top of the like ‘essential horror’ lists, but these are the ones I think are worth it.]
Dario Argento - Deep Red (1975)
I really, really wanted to like Suspiria more, because the concept and Goblin’s score for Suspiria both appeal to me a lot more. But I had a lot more fun watching Deep Red. So far it’s my favorite of the giallos.
Richard Donner - The Omen (1976)
Classic. It’s so good. “It’s all for you, Damian!” Plus, I love any movie that comes with rumors of a curse.
Alfred Hitchcock - Psycho (1960)
I would classify most of Hitchcock as ‘thriller’ rather than horror, but Psycho is firmly psychological horror, and The Classic.
Stuart Gordon - Re-animator (1985)
I couldn’t really decide if I wanted to put this one. Especially because on a long drive my friend and we basically covered how this was really ripe for a remake because it’s flaws…did not age particularly well, especially re: gender and race. (But it could be so, so good. It could be an amazing commentary about consent and the use of marginalized bodies…but the original …is…not.) But I’m putting this on here because of body horror. They clearly hired dancers or choreographers to do the reanimated movements because they really lean into it and it’s great. It gets…heavily derailed at the end by an absolutely ridiculous gore climax and missing the opportunity to actually have a coherent storyline or a message of any kind…but they got the grotesque movements down.
Honorable Mentions: The Amityville Horror, The Exorcist, Rosemary’s Baby, *sigh* Cannibal Holocaust (like…I don’t actually recommend anyone watch it. I’m glad I did, because it’s really important for how the ‘found footage’ genre developed, so it’s a piece of film history but like. Don’t actually watch it.), The House on Haunted Hill
“Random Others In Between”
Adrian Lyne - Jacob’s Ladder (1990)
You might recognize Jacob’s Ladder as the movie that more heavily inspired the first chapter of ‘dark underground//violent sky’ more than I had originally thought. I had originally been basing a lot of the tone and style on current trends in horror TV, but then I happened to watch Jacob’s Ladder while I was in the middle of writing the second half and was like…oh. Like, I knew I had been heavily influenced by Jacob’s Ladder and the ending, but I had forgotten about how the film differentiates between ‘reality’ and ‘dream’ - in that it doesn’t! And that was an effect I was specifically striving for when I was writing ‘dark underground’. It’s also just a really weird, trippy late-80s/early-90s movie set in New York when New York was still really dirty and that’s fun.
Hideo Nakata - Dark Water (2002)
This is my favorite Japanese horror film. I think it gets a little bit looked over in favor of some others (Ringu, Ju-on, Audition), but it’s my favorite. (Has a terrible American remake, so be sure to avoid that one. It comes up first when you google. -_-)
James Wan - The Conjuring (2013)
I did really like this first entry - the sequels are kind of aggressively meh.
Scott Derrickson - Sinister (2012)
THE DANGER IS IN THE VIEWING!
Honorable Mentions: Session 9, Se7en, The Ritual, It Follows, The Descent, The Hills Have Eyes (I just really like bright horror movies), The Exorcism of Emily Rose (for fun bonus pretension, you can also watch Requiem, and then when people ask you if you’ve seen The Exorcism of Emily Rose, you get to be like “Yeah, have you seen the German original?” though, technically, it’s that they’re both based off of the same true-story. it’s still fun to say), Hard Candy, Ils (Them), THE VVITCH (should only ever be pronounced ‘The Va-Vitch’ lol)
“The Parody Films”
[What is there to say? They’re great, so much fun.]
Joss Whedon - Cabin in the Woods (2012)
Remember back in 2012 when Avengers 1 came out, and then Cabin in the Woods came out, like, immediately afterwards, and we all loved Joss Whedon? We were so innocent back then.
Eli Craig - Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)
This movie is so pure. I love how they both play into and subvert the rural hillbilly tropes with the two main characters. They just want a vacation home! These kids keep killing themselves on their property!
Honorable Mentions: Shaun of the Dead, I was googling to confirm the year of Tucker and Dale vs. Evil and I saw What We Do In The Shadows listed as horror paraody, but I would count that more as a Gothic mockumentary, but I listed it here because I love it so much.
“Documentaries”
Xavier Burgin - Horror Noire: A History of Black Horror (2019)
This movie was so interesting! Highly recommend. I think Shudder is planning on producing more of these documentaries, about marginalized groups in horror, and I am Here For It.
Honorable Mentions: Cropsey/Killer Legends, Best Worst Movie
I think I’ll stop here and maybe someday do a separate one for books. And maybe TV series, but I’m having a hard time teasing out the line between mystery and horror because of how popular and kind of unique Nordic Noir is right now. It’s just hard to draw the line for TV.
But I’ll end by summarizing reading thoughts (in a more disorganized manner):
-I have two separate ‘complete tales and poems’ editions of Edgar Allen Poe - one to look pretty and one to annotate.
-If you come for my girl Mary Shelley I will come @ you. Once a kind of asshole-y friend once was like ‘Frankenstein is terrible because it was written by a teenage girl’ and, I swear to God, I almost fought him right there in the bar. The Last Man is also great.
-I also almost forgot how much I loved Dracula. The Harkers especially. (I once tried to read League of Extraordinary Gentleman and gave up with a rage-headache 15 pages in because of what they did to Mina.) (Ah yes, let’s make her a “Strong Female Character ™” by having her divorce Jonathan and almost be raped in the first 15 pages.) (Couldn’t deal with it.) (I’m sure I would in general like that series but I just had too much attachment to Mina Harker to get over it.)
-I physically cannot get through Lovecraft. I can’t do it. I’ve tried so many times, I know how important it is but I just. Can’t. Don’t want to. Won’t. Sorry.
-A lot of adapted books I tend to prefer the books they were based on. Some are kind of obvious, like I Am Legend by Richard Matheson, which is a way, way better book than the movie. (They changed the ending which undercut the actual message.) But others are still decent movies, I just tend to prefer the book. Like, everyone always puts Let the Right One In on ‘essential horror’ lists, but I actually liked the book by John Ajvide Lindqvist a lot better.
-Similarly, you may have noticed I put no Stephen King movies on this list - there are a few I really like, but I think they work better as complements to the novels. Misery and the original Pet Sematary (haven’t seen the new one yet) are my two favorite movies-based-on-king. The Shining is visually stunning by character-wise, wildly disappointing, so point to the novel for this one. (King also hated the adaptation for what Kubrick did to Wendy.) My general King recommendations are: Carrie, Misery, The Shining, The Mist, Insomnia
I’m having a bit of an issue with how male-dominated this list is. It’s partially my problem that I’m working on correcting (I’m at the point where I’m actively trying not to read horror books by white men anymore) and partially a general problem in the industry. It’s hard to get into an industry that for a long time unquestioningly based itself on violence against women and other marginalized peoples’ bodies. -_-  But yeah, I have a list of contemporary horror novels by women that I’m working my way through, and I’m trying to catch up on some older staples like Shirley Jackson, Angela Carter, and Octavia Butler.
UPDATE: After I finished compiling this list, I googled ‘Horror movies directed by women’ and there are a couple that I would recommend, I think they’re just not as visible. (Did not realize they’d been directed by women until this Google.):
Mary Lambert - Pet Sematary (1989)
Karen Kusama - Jennifer’s Body (2009)
Mary Harron - American Psycho (2000)
Lynne Ramsay - We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011) (though I liked the book better)
This list was probably incomplete and I’ve probably forgotten a bunch of things I really like! It’s also only made up of things I’ve already seen/read (though it’s not comprehensive). If something’s not on here and you think it should be, lmk! It may be that I haven’t seen it yet and I’ll add it to my to-watch list. Always taking suggestions, especially for more horror (films or books) from underrepresented groups.
