Wrinkles
“Da, did Mathair write to Quel’thalas about this?”
Sam Auroran looked up from the scattered papers on the desk, brows knitting as he regarded his younger daughter. Karinlyyn stood a few feet away, an unfolded letter in her hand, the envelope tucked between her fingers bearing the seal of the Argent Crusade. If she had been in a dress instead of the gray leathers, it would have been like looking at both of his daughters at once. “No,” he said slowly. “Your mother hasn’t written to anyone there since—hell. I think since your cousin’s wife had their last child.”
She nodded slowly, frowning at the letter in her hands, violet eyes skipping over the page again as she read it a second time, then again.
Sam drew himself up straighter. “Why?”
“Do you know if the Crusade reached out to anyone that might have served with them?”
He didn’t like the strange note in her voice. The elder Auroran rounded the table, moving toward where his daughter stood just shy of a patch of sunlight that streamed through the windows at their townhouse in Dalaran—their primary home these days, with Lordaeron long lost and Theramore gone. “Lyyn.”
Her gaze flicked up from the letter, regarding her father with a quiet, probing gaze. “Do you?”
“Everyone I’ve spoken to—everyone that you and Anthus have spoken to for that matter—have been fairly firm about keeping it quiet and refusing to send another contingent for fear of panic. Three units in a matter of weeks without warning? There hasn’t been anything quite like that since the war.”
She didn’t ask which war. It didn’t matter. Her gaze drifted back to the page. “If no one is supposed to know and no one reached out from the Crusade, then why are there being inquiries made by someone else?”
“Who?”
She relinquished the letter to him, starting to pace as he scanned the missive, getting the gist. His mouth soured, stomach twisting.
“Do you know these names?” He asked.
“Yes,” she said, leaning against the windowsill and staring out at the courtyard below where her husband did his best to keep their nieces and nephews distracted from everything going on. Her daughter’s laughter echoed off the walls, cheering on her eldest cousin as he squared off against his uncle with practice swords.
Sam waited, but she didn’t seem inclined to elaborate. He exhaled. “Lyyn.”
“You know them, too,” she said.
“Not quite the way you do, I imagine,” he said quietly. “You serve with them?”
“That is a complicated question, Da.”
The ghost of a smile curved his lips for a second before it was gone. “I meant in the Crusade.”
“It was the Dawn, then,” she said. “Grimstryke and Brightborn, yes. Cieltus I knew by reputation. It was at Light’s Hope, mostly.”
“Strike forces?”
She shook her head. “Usually not but every so often they’d deploy a combat medic with us.”
Sam nodded slowly. “But that doesn’t solve our mystery, does it?”
“If Mathair had written—”
“But she didn’t, like I said, not since his wife had their son. Grimstryke must have found out another way.”
Sam sank down into one of the heavy leather reading chairs near the window. “Then how?”
“I don’t know,” she admitted. “I know Anny hasn’t written to anyone in Quel’thalas. I haven’t had contact since the incident here a couple of months ago, but that was before any of this happened. I hadn’t heard even a whisper since.”
Sam frowned, glancing toward the window. “Then how would they know to make inquiries?”
“Perhaps it’s nothing,” she murmured. “Perhaps it’s—hell. Coincidence. Grimstryke’s well-placed, it could just be something he caught a rumor about and pressed on. The other two are associates of his. It would track.”
“Does it really feel like it’s nothing?” Sam glanced up at her with an arched brow.
Karinlyyn exhaled a sigh and leaned against the sill. “No. No, it doesn’t.”
Sam simply nodded, gaze drifting toward the window. “Then I’ll leave it to you.”
“Another wrinkle,” his daughter murmured, taking the letter back.
“There always is,” he said, smiling reassuringly, the expression lingering for only a few seconds before it faded. “We’ll find them.”
“Of course we will,” she said softly, folding up the letter and tucking it into her leathers. “We don’t have a choice.”

Nostalgia
Lumeal sat across the table from a hooded stranger. His eyebrows raised as he exhaled a plume of smoke. “You wish to know how I met those closest to me?” He snorted. “For what?”
“I’m doing a... research.” The voice whispered. Soft, melodic. A dainty hand had pulled free a quill towards some parchment.
Lumeal sighed and inhaled another drag from the cigarette. “Alright - you asked for it.”
“Amaris Cieltus. I met her briefly. Once before. It was in passing. I don’t think we had a single private conversation but now - she’s turned into one of my greatest and longest friends. We met through the father of her child, and my closest friend, Anandor. Since we both left, however, we’ve grown closer and I am extremely blessed to see her grow.”
“A dingy bar in Northrend brought me my best friend. Phaeith Ven’torum. The bar was a reprieve we both sought out during the war. We drank and drank until the sun came up - often getting in trouble. We would dance, and vent and it was like that little bar in Northrend was just our little hideaway. Frozen in time. There, nothing but the two of us existed. No pain. Nothing. She is the brightest star, tainted by darknesses like me.”
“I was within Silvermoon City when I met Anandor Goldenflame.” Lumeal smirked. “He’d approached me. Not out of the blue. I was speaking to a friend. We got along well. Aging men, with gripes and scores to settle. I assume he wanted a friend. I don’t blame him one bit.” Lumeal inhaled from the join once more. “We quickly grew as brothers in arms. He married another of my friends... Anathem.”

Gather What They May
The sun was well put of sight as the moon peeks from being the looming clouds onto Kul Tiras. Citizens of Drustvar had returned to their homes and hearths even before dusk had fully settled in. The time since the Cieltus' arrivals had allowed them to meditate or rest before Ayame and Dithaya would venture into the darkened forest. It was suspposed to be only a scouting mission, but when had things actually gone according to plan for the archer as of late? Two dead subordiants and one now cowering back at the Inn was what she had to deal with. If anything this was a chance for fresh air even if the situation was dire.
Even after a night of rainfall, the hoof marks in the mud and road could be seen that led the two elves to the previous perch. Dismounting their horse, they leave the steed tied at a post to prevent it fron running off. And with slinging the rifle around to her front, the archer readies for anything that may try to jump out at them. Gods did she despise using a gun, but it got the job done nonetheless.
"Keep close and dim your gaze, we wouldn't want them to see us just yet," Dithaya's voice remaining low for only the two to hear as they tread onward. "Unless necessary, do not engage unless they are truly lost."
What Dithaya had described to Amaris was mild to what they would find this time. The witches had decided to gather all their remaining captives into the center of the clearing. Some sway to each side in a mindless manner, other rigid in movement of a risen corpse. Even amongst them were the Straus, Maria sickly looking with darkened ichor that decorated her front, Thomas with his head back and mouth slacked to the side. The wound in his chest wide enough that the two elves could see right through to the other side. Some of the villagers that hadn't been tainted by the witches held one another and cowered in the center. Beings made of wicker and bone skulking around the area for any intruders. Their creators within small groups around the blue flame pits for incantations, a total of six by the look of it. At the far end, a large effigy adorn with skulls, spines, flesh, and brambles looming over as if their deity watched over their labors.
"What do you suggest? We do have the element of surprise here, but for how long is uncertain," she whispers to the sister, but never turning her eyes away from the scene before them.

Shedding Light On The Situation
(Continued from ‘Gather What They May’ )
Slowly but surely, the pain that radiated throughout her entire form began to recede as Amaris poured Light magic into her. For once she was able to take a deep breath as she tilts her head back. “Mind the ribs,” she mutters with a slight wince from doing so. At least without pain clouding her thoughts, she could begin to recall all that had occurred while her and Ayame were out there. After a moment, she looks up to Amaris and sighs.
“Believe me, I have no intentions on heading back out there if I can help it,” she shifts her legs a little to stretch them as they grew stiff. “Your sister was amazing out there, I’ll have to thank her when she’s up and about. As for the rest out there, it may be wise that you two do go out there,” she adds while glancing over to Jera. “So long as you’re not too drained to do so. Ask who you need to, but I’m not sure you’ll get that many answers out of them right away. From what I can tell, the Light and fire would be your best weapons to get rid of them. There were six there tonight, no telling just how many actually lurk in the woods.”
“Six witches and they were able to do this much damage?” Jera rubs her hands while watching the healing process from the side, the Light’s presence alone was enough to make her jittery and uneasy.
“Possibly more considering we had gotten there when they had converted possibly more villagers than I had initially thought. And that thing, they created felt like one of the Scourge’s constructs back in Northrend. Screaming souls, lichfire, bones, all of it.”
Jera steadies herself as she takes a deep breath to exhale through her nose nodding along with Dithaya’s words. A hand soon coming up to her mouth while crossing the other arm across her chest in thought. “Fire and Light..” she murmurs. “We could manage that, I haven’t been able to just yet because the situation hasn’t needed it.. If Lady Cieltus is able, I think we could do it.”

The Ren'dorei takea a deep breath still wringing her fingers while looking open Amaris. It was true, the woman's very presense made her skin crawl. Not because of her personality, but more so what she embodied, something that could easily snuff her out in an instant.
"I understand Lady Cieltus, really do. What am I makes it almost painful when exposed for prolonged periods of time to someone that exudes it. I-I made my choice in exile and have to deal with it, I do what I have to so I can help people. It's what I want to do, it's something my father would have wanted," her voice growing quiet toward the end. "I'll follow behind."
Dithaya looked over to Jera for a moment trying to place just who the girl's father was. If anything it made her curious if she may had known him at one if not just in passing. Shaking her head, she watches the two leave to investigate. Hopefully she'll get her answer once all of this was done.
The couple embraced one another, tears streaking down their faces, rocking each way. The husband being the one caked and covered in whatever filth he had accumulated while out there. Upon seeing Amaris approach, his hold on his wife never ceased, but he looked more than thankful to see two of the four elves approach. "We can't thank you all enough..this was blessing. We never hoped to return."
