OCTOBER 3 2018 - "Israeli settlers flooded Khan Al-Ahmar with waste water, storming the Palestinian Bedouin village and confronting residents."
"The settlers came from the illegal Israeli settlement of Kfar Adumim, located east of Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank. They stormed the village of Khan Al-Ahmar but were confronted by international and local activists, along with residents of the village, the Palestine Chronicle reported. However, the settlers “managed to flood the area with wastewater before activists and residents were able to stop them,” the report added."
"Local Palestinians shared images of the flooding on social media, with the waste water clearly visible against the otherwise arid landscape."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Khan Al-Ahmar has been slated for demolition this week, after an Israeli court gave the residents of the village until 1 October to evacuate their homes. The demolition is expected imminently, with the delay thought to be due only to Jewish holidays taking place earlier this week."
"Israel’s policies of settling Israeli civilians in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, wantonly destroying property and forcibly transferring Palestinians living under occupation, violate the Fourth Geneva Convention and are war crimes listed in the statute of the International Criminal Court." - Amnesty International
Amnesty added: “Since 1967, Israel has forcibly evicted and displaced entire communities and demolished more than 50,000 Palestinian homes and structures.”
Situated east of Jerusalem in the occupied West Bank, Khan Al-Ahmar is home to Al-Jahhalin Bedouins who are refugees from the Negev desert. They have lived in the area since their displacement by the Israeli army in 1967. Israel has refused to recognise Al-Jahhalin Bedouin communities or grant them building permits, a strategy often used by Israel to term any Bedouin home illegal.

Author’s Note: Part two of Baby Primarchs being raised by the Emperor AU! Previous. Next
Warnings: dehumanization of primarchs, dehumanization of infants, manipulation
Tagged: @egrets-not-regrets
Summary: Erda inquires about the visions that two of the baby primarchs were so distressed by. The Emperor explains, after some cajoling.
"Neoth it's been a week and a half, and you've yet to tell me what the contents of the visions that Eight and Nine had that caused you to decide to pull all of the primarchs from their incubation chambers until they were infants, like we had previously agreed. Don't think I haven't noticed the increase in security in and around the gene labs, as well as the entirety of the palace as a whole. You're preparing for something. Let me help. The only psyker stronger than I am on Terra is you. But I can't prepare for what I don't know is coming." Erda demanded, staring directly up at Neoth, hands on her hips as the two of them were overseeing the final touches being done to the Primarchs' nursery. All twenty of them would be sleeping in a single, heavily fortified room within the Imperial palace. The room in question was itself a secret known to herself, Amar, Neoth... And the entirety of Neoth's hand-crafted Custodes. This room had been repurposed from a large storage room to a multi-bed play and sleeping room. This room was positioned within one hallway of the throne room and Erda's own personal rooms. The room had one active Gellar field protecting it at all times, and had two separate back-up Gellar fields ready to activate, should the first fail or waver for the slightest moment.
Neoth briefly looked at her before staring at the last of the preparations - several of his younger Custodes were carefully setting up the last of the infant beds with deft and steady hands, though the small furniture looked almost comical in their large hands. He sighed before saying "If we left them to continue to grow within their maturation pods, within a year... Chaos would take them."
Erda froze for a moment, her eyes widening in horror and confusion "But... But how, the Gellar fields keep The Enemy at bay!"
Neoth looked down at her, a troubled expression furrowing his brows "The visions were overlapping and unclear, but The Enemy sent agents that destroyed the Gellar fields protecting their pods, and -" He hesitated, looking searchingly at her. He still does not see or feel any Chaotic taint within her. "... For reasons I do not know, you were the one to rip open a warp portal, and cast the primarchs into that infinite abyss. You were trembling with rage and sorrow, and many died in the ensuing rampage of The Enemy's servants rampaging around the palace, as the gene-labs were collapsed as reality temporarily collapsed."
"I...  I would never cast our beautiful children away! Especially not into the Warp, the domain of The Enemy, to corrupt their souls and twist their brilliant little minds to cruelty... If they wouldn't kill our children out of spite." Erda spluttered, taking a half-step back in shock.
Part of him wanted to correct her, remind her that the Primarchs weren't their children, not truly. They were weapons, tools for galactic conquest and to bring the disparate colonies of humanity back under one unified banner. The rebuke was on his tongue, but caution stayed him. He would let her cogitate on her future self's potential betrayal - let the utter foolishness of such an act, no matter how well-intentioned she may have thought it to be in a moment of wrathful sorrow, before reminding her what the Primachs, which they had spent over a thousand years in genetics research, testing and experimenting, in order to create. "I am glad to hear that, Erda. I cannot say what drove you in their visions to such an act... But-" He deliberately hesitates, looking her in the eyes before letting his gaze sweep around the room, to the twenty-one bassinets arranged in neat if uneven rows around the room "I... Have a request to make of you, Erda."
She tensed at that, trying to catch his gaze "What... What request is that, Neoth?"
He lets her catch his gaze. He slowly reaches out to her physically, one hand coming to rest lightly on his hand, the other cupping her cheek. "You are a dear companion of mine, Erda. In these long, endless days and nights, and your keen mind and insights have been invaluable beyond words. I see you now, untouched by The Enemy, and I want to believe that-" Carefully, gently now. A light squeeze to her shoulder, allow his eyes to soften as his face shifts to a look of worry that he does genuinely feel. His gilded companions shift a little, ready and listening for the command.
Good.
Hopefully he won't need to give it, but for the future he sees for mankind, and the necessary sacrifice and bloodshed that must be spilled for it to become a reality, he cannot allow his Primarchs out of his grasp. For eleven of them to become corrupted in one way or another by The Enemy or filthy xenos... No. He will not allow that to happen. He's keenly aware of the power she wields. Which is why this conversation is happening here, well before The Enemy's servants invade the palace and far from where his little generals are slumbering in their pods. "- whatever reasons your potential future self did that, you believed it was for the best. But the glimpses into their futures that I saw... Seventeen lands on a world of chaos worshippers and is slowly corrupted from decanting. Eight lands in a world of literal - and figurative - darkness and is forced to survive on it-his own, killing animals to feast on their flesh. Twelve is beset by Xenos upon decanting, and is then thrown into gladiator pits, with neural implants forced into his brain that torture him into madness. Fourteen lands on a world ruled by necromancers, found by the dread lord of that world and cruelly experimented on until it-he escapes. Twenty-A and Twenty-O are separated during the warp trip and Twenty-O is raised by pirates. Sixteen-"
she raises a hand and pressed her fingers to his lips, shaking her head, tears threatening to fall from her eyes "Please... No more. I can guess what you are going to ask of me. You want me to leave the Primarch project? Perhaps even leave the palace entirely. To avoid whatever temporary madness, or Enemy-fueled temptation I somehow fall for, yes? There is much I can do outside of the palace. Or would you rather I leave Terra entirely? I can assist in dealing with the tech-priests of Mars, or the Jovian shipyards."
Neoth kept his face and body posture gentle, regretful, though he allowed a small smile to lift the corners of his lips. "That I am, I am glad that you understand why I am asking this of you. Which would you prefer? To interact with the tech-priests, or wrangle the disparate forces of the Jovian shipyards? For security purposes, I would not be able to inform you of their growth and development until they are ready to be introduced to Terra and the Sol system at large. For their own protection."
"I... Of course, that makes sense, though I will demand that you take plenty of pictures and keep a log of how each of them grow and develop! Despite not being able to be there for their childhoods, I still want to have some evidence of them growing into the strong, handsome beings I know they will one day become. I would rather deal with the Jovian shipyards and deal with the Negotiator clans, rather than the worshippers of the Omnisiah. No offense meant, Neoth." Erda decided, a small and teasing smile appearing on her face.
Neoth rolled his eyes and huffed, grumbling "While it's convenient they decided I am their Omnisiah, it is not something that I encourage them. Of course I will be having their growth and development well documented by trusted people, which I will share with you once they are ready." The promise came easily to his lips. Whether or not he kept that promise depended on whether or not Erda turned to the Enemy in the ensuing years or not.
"Very well. I’ll start to pack." Erda responded with a nod "I should be ready to leave by the end of the day."
Neoth hummed, nodding and said "I'll have Constantin help you pack, and see you on your way to the shipyards."
She chuckled a little and swatted at him playfully "As if that boy doesn't have enough to do! You don't need to have him fussing over me while I pack my things."
"I insist. He's currently at loose ends, and you know the mischief he can get up to when bored, Idle hands and all that." He responded, keeping his voice and body posture light and playful.
"Oh, alright. Send him to my rooms, and I'll get packing. Don't bully Malcador too much! Goodness knows that boy is entirely too serious as it is. Or Constantin! The lad thinks the galaxy of you." Erda hummed before she headed off.
"I know. I'll keep that in mind, Erda." Neoth responded, suppressing any wayward emotions behind the mask of calm he was projecting. It wouldn't be a true victory until she was off Terra.
Six hours later, and he got the confirmation from Constantin that Erda was well on her way to the Jovian shipyards, none the wiser of the two shadow keepers sent on the same ship to monitor her and report back to him.

Made Marion Mini-FAQ, Sept. 23
Just a few bits and bobs that I can talk about at this point in development!
Q: Players commit to their route ending at the end of Chapter 3 and then experience one of two different Chapter 4s. Does that make each chapter 4 choice-free?
There are still choices in the Chapter 4s! Many of the game's major love scenes are in the relevant character's Chapter 4, so you'll have the love scene choice if you have explicit text on. The rest of the choices are for the purpose of role-playing and making decisions about Marion's future. They won't make major changes to the ending, but they'll let you put a personal stamp on your endgame experience.
Except, of course for that choice. The one that leads either to victory or to a bad end. Which choice is it? You'll find out!
Some of your earlier choices can also cause minor changes in Chapter 4. For instance, in Sherwood Common Marion can write either an angry or a diplomatic letter to her father. This may affect whether he appears in the epilogue segment at the end of a Sherwood character's route.
Q: What kind of experience does the option to turn off explicit text provide? Does it allow for asexual relationships?
Because one of the main goals of the Made Marion project was to provide mature-rated love scenes for adult otome/amare fans who were interested in them, we don't have the option for asexual relationships in this game. Marion is allosexual by canon and it's obvious from the way she views the world from the very beginning of the game.
When explicit text is off, the player reads a shortened, non-explicit version of scenes that involve sexual activity. I try to get across the emotions that the characters are feeling without getting into the nitty-gritty of things, but it's still stated that the characters are having a sexual encounter.
Explicit text is ON by default in Made Marion, so players who do not wish to read such text should turn it off in the Options menu ASAP. Once a scene with explicit text has begun, turning the option off won't work until the next explicit scene (not that we're loaded with them, it's just how the script flow of the game works). I may be able to program a "break-out" button later on, but it won't be available as of the first Early Access release.
Q: Characters in Made Marion drink "tisane." Is that tea or something else?
A tisane is a hot drink with an herbal infusion. Many tisanes, also known as herbal teas, do not contain actual tea leaves. Tea is a very specific beverage, and its history in Europe is tied up in colonial-era violence. Instead of trying to work that into my alternate-magical-Europe history, I decided that it made the most sense for Avalons to simply drink non-tea-containing tisanes. Considering that plant druids are all about making magical hybrid plants, they probably have some delicious ones! They are caffeine-free but may contain other types of stimulants.
When Avalons aren't drinking alcohol, there's a good chance that they're drinking tisane. Thanks to druidic knowledge and the environmental protections inherent in the Pact, Avalon drinking water is way cleaner than the water was in Medieval England. But as Avalon science doesn't yet have a working knowledge of microorganisms, boiling your water is still the safest way to go.

Humans are weird: In the line of duty
( Please come see me on my new patreon and support me for early access to stories and personal story requests :D https://www.patreon.com/NiqhtLord Every bit helps)
The bulkhead slowly rose and Feneci walked on to the command bridge with her film crew. It wasn’t the most ideal of jobs she had been tasked with over the years but it was proving to be one of the most taxing.
She was never fond of interacting with humans and when she had been told by her editor that she would be covering the evacuation convoys from the Temeril homeworld onboard the human cruiser “Queen Ann” she had rightly protested. Humans were known to be suspicious and untrusting of new comers and she had felt as much when she and her crew had first set foot on the ship as it escorted Temeril ships to their refugee locations.
The human’s never said anything openly to her or her team. They treated them with respect and answered all of the questions they were able to; yet there was always a lingering presence in the air that radiated off the general crew that Feneci couldn’t help but summarize to be a general disdain. To them this ship was their home and she was an outsider that had been forced upon them to raise awareness for the ongoing crisis. This feeling thankfully was not shared with the ship’s captain who Feneci had finally been able to secure an interview with.
“Welcome, Ms. Feneci.” An old human in a captain’s uniform stated as the bridge crew parted to let him through. Unlike the other humans he radiated no such ill intent and his smile appeared genuine. He held out a hand for Feneci who took it to shake in standard human greeting rituals.
“Captain Amar, thank you for sparing the time to meet with us.” Feneci replied. “I know you must have your hands full with the evacuation efforts.”
Captain Amar released his hand and straightened out his uniform before motioning Feneci and the camera crew to follow him to the captain’s chair. The chair was situated at the back of the bridge so that the captain could observe the on goings of his entire crew but not higher to give the impression he was lording over them.
“You give me too much praise.” Captain Amar replied as he sat down in his chair. Feneci sat opposite him as the camera feed went green to show the recording had begun. “The real praise should be given to the Temeril’s for organizing an evacuation so quickly.”
“There are those, including some within the Terran government itself, that have stated that the entire evacuation process is unnecessary; that the Temeril homeworld could have been saved had the adequate tectonic stabilizers been deployed.”
Feneci looked down at her data pad for the notes she had written for this interview. “They say the cost of the stabilizers would have been a fraction of what this fleet of ships is now running.”
Captain Amar rocked side to side in his chair as if debating internally how to respond to this statement. After a moment to collect his thoughts he replied. “It is not for me to question the policies of my government, but I can assure you that having seen the Temeril homeworld from orbit adding a few tectonic stabilizers would have only delayed the inevitable.”
“You are an expert in seismic theology?” Feneci countered, hoping to catch the captain in a trap of words.
“I’m afraid I never had time for such studies,” the captain admitted, “but from high orbit I saw a lake of fire the size of a continent appear in the span of three days; consuming everything it touched like a gapping maw of some great beast of old.”
The captain shook his head regretfully. “The Temeril homeworld would become their tomb had we not come to assist with the evacuation and soon to be relocation effort to a new homeworld once we have finished establishing a colony on Techlon V.”
Feneci waved her hand around the bridge. “Since when does evacuation and relocation efforts require military escorts?” She held out a pad for the captain to see. “By our recent count there are at least five military grade vessels in this convoy alone, including this ship we’re on right now which is a cruiser class no less.”
For the first time the captain looked uneasy. “We have received recent reports of marauders operating in the area; preying on isolated ships or small convoy’s to steal either their ships or the passengers onboard.”
This was an actual shock to Feneci. Not only had she not heard any of these reports before, but she was surprised that the human captain would reveal it so freely.
“Was this information made public to the Temeril’s?” she asked, to which the captain shook his head.
“At the time there was a concern that many would instead seek to remain on the planet when faced with the potential danger in space that the marauders posse.” Captain Amar admitted. “As such it was felt that only after the trip was underway would this information be released.”
“Do you have any idea how deceitful that is?” Feneci pressed. “You intentionally withheld vital information from these people!”
Before the captain could reply alarm bells rang out around the control room. Bridge crew that had been ideally listening to the exchange scattered back to their terminals and sounded off their findings.
“Unknown cluster of contacts approaching from the rear of the convoy,” the scanner officer sounded off, “twenty minutes until they’re on us.”
In a flash the captain was up from his chair while Feneci bade her camera crew to continue filming. This would only further highlight the mismanagement the humans had over the convoy as a result of her report.
“Unidentified vessels this is Captain Amar of the Terran Alliance,” Captain Amar stated with authority, “you are approaching a evacuation convoy from the planet Temeril under our protection; identify yourself.”
There was no reply save the resounding pings from the scanner terminal indicating the unknown ships location. The communication officer shook his head and looked back at his captain.
“Full spread across all channels.” Captain Amar stated and the communication officer replied in kind.
“I repeat, this is a Temeril evacuation fleet under the protection of the Terran Alliance; you will identify yourselves at once.”
Once more silence.
“They’ve increased speed, ten minutes to contact.” The scanner officer called out.
“Escorts two and three, break off from the convoy and intercept the approaching vessels; and send word to Terran command we will need reinforcements.” A tactical hologram appeared above the bridge showing not only the formation of ships in the convoy but the approaching craft as well. At the captain’s command the two mentioned escort vessels began pulling away and set course to meet the unknown vessels.
“Escort three is asking for permission to engage if provoked.” The communication officer called over his shoulder looking at Captain Amar. The captain paused to consider his next steps before replying “Permission to engage only if fired upon first; we don’t know if these are the raiders we heard about or some convoy ships that were late to the party.” The officer nodded and relayed the order to the escort ships.
Feneci watched as the two opposing forces drew closer until finally they were right on top of each other when suddenly the coms channels were alive with chatter.
“This is escort two, contacts are not friendly! I repeat, they are not frie-“
The transmission was cut off half way as Feneci watched the marker for the second escort ship vanish. Captain Amar slammed his fist into a nearby terminal leaving an indentation.
“Escort three break off and rejoin the Queen Ann;” Captain Amar barked, “escorts four and five form up on us as well. Keep them away from the convoy at all costs.”
This time Feneci felt the entire ship lurch beneath her feet as the engines powered on and the ship began to turn around. Another round of pings came from the scanner terminal.
“Another twelve contacts just appeared and they’re heading right for us.”
“Clever bastards.” Captain Amar remarked as he took up his command chair once more. “They sent a small force ahead to gauge our numbers. They must think we’re easy pickings if they’ve fully committed now.”
“How far until the convoy reaches the jump point?” the captain called to his scanning officer.
“They need thirty minutes to reach the edge of the system before they can make the jump.” was his answer. Feneci added the time in her head and the raider fleet would easily reach them before they could escape to the jump point. The convoy would either be captured or destroyed dealing a crippling blow to the Temeril people.
“Ms. Feneci, I believe you should make for the hangar bay, get on your shuttle and head back to the convoy at once.” Feneci turned to see Captain Amar addressing her directly. “I can no longer guarantee your safety and this ship is about to enter into combat; we will buy as much time for the convoy to escape.”
“You’re not seriously going to fight them are you?” Feneci found herself asking despite herself. From the tactical hologram it looked like a swarm of red angry dots was rushing them while a thin blue line of Terran ships stood between them and the convoy.
“We were entrusted with the safety of this convoy and the Terran Navy has never shirked its commitments before.”
With that the captain turned from the reporter to focus on the battle at hand while a pair of naval guards stepped forward to escort the crew to the hangar. The last sight Feneci had of the captain was of him directing targeting orders as the first barrages of incoming fire impacted the shields. -------------------
On this day during the stellar year of 2573, a small Terran fleet under the command of Captain Amar Jabal protected an evacuation convoy of defenseless Temeril’s from a horde of marauders.
Outnumbered three to one, Captain Amar did not hesitate to engage the enemy fleet to buy the fleeing Temeril’s enough time to escape the system safely. The battle was fierce and uncompromising as both sides dueled it out in the void of space with the brave human captain using every trick in his book to keep the enemy focused on him.
Moving his ships in close to threaten the enemy carriers, the vile fiends were forced to keep their fighter wings close at hand to defend their carrier ships rather than chase down the fleeing innocents.
When presented with the overwhelming power of his flagship, the cruiser “Queen Ann”, the raiders found that alone they could not pierce through the mighty shields of the vessel and were likewise pinned in place engaging it lest they be picked off one by one.
But as the battle unfolded the Terran fleet lost many of its ships as they heroically held the line until only the Queen Ann remained.
With her decks breached in a dozen places, weapon systems damaged beyond repair, and her communications cut from the rest of the rescue fleet that was already on their way at max jump speed; the Queen Ann defiantly rammed the enemy flagship and detonated her jump drive in a final act of defiance. The resulting explosion and shower of debris crippled the few marauders that remained leaving them unable to continue their barbarous hunt against the Temeril’s which had safely made it to their own jump points and fled the system.
When the Terran relief fleet finally arrived in system they found a dozen survivor pods from the Queen Ann that had jettisoned from the vessel moments before the captain had initiated the ramming maneuverer.
The surviving crew stated that the captain had ordered all hands to abandon ship and that he alone remained to initiate the final act against his enemies stating: “It has been an honor to serve alongside each and every one of you. You have done the Terran Navy proud, so hold your heads high in the days to come.
As for myself, it makes a poor captain that does not go down with their ship; and I will be damned if I let these bastards make my Ann into another trophy in their motley fleet of vagabonds and cowards.
Look for me on the horizon when you reach the solar seas of the afterlife.”
In honor of his sacrifice, it has been announced that the new Temeril colony known previously as “Techlon V” is to be renamed to “Amar Prime” and that the Temeril people have already put forward an application to join the Terran Alliance.
Reporting live from Amar Prime this is Feneci Jubal. -----------

What's happening in Bangladesh...
I just wanna put a brief post to say I stand in solidarity with the Bangladeshi students who are losing their lives to government corruption and are being cruelly censored.
As a Bangladeshi, though I'm part of the diaspora and not completely knowledgeable of the politics of Bangladesh, I want to say this isn't coming out of nowhere. This is from longstanding corruption. It's tragic to look at Bangladesh, the country that fought for its freedom and promised to do better, have people in the ruling class fall back into the trap of greed and corruption that our colonisers revelled in.
My country of pain. My poor, poor country of pain.
For a lot of Bangladeshis, this is a really difficult time for us. For anyone seeing my post and finding what's happening in Bangladesh (and I'll be honest, with Palestine as well, certain feelings and generational trauma due to colonialism can arise and surmount one another) painful, just know you're not alone.
Even if you can't do much, talking about it, thinking about it, seeing what is happening, and acknowledging it are still good things to do.
I'll say it again, my country of pain.
My grandparents are going to be heading back to Bangladesh soon and I worry for them, but I also know they're strong and they'll be alright. They have us too, should they need me and my family.
Regardless, it's dreadful.
A poor transliteration here of Bangla, but here we go:
Amar duhkhee desh. Tomar ki hollo.
[My poor country. What happened to you?]
It makes me cry because we had vowed to do better once we reclaimed our home and our language.

Olga de AmaralColombian, b. 1932
Olga de Amaral weaves horsehair, wool, linen, cotton, gesso, and precious metals—most often gold leaf—into abstract tapestries and sculptures that blur the lines between art and craft. At a distance, many of her pieces evoke glistening mosaics, adobe walls, medieval chainmail, and baroque churches, dramatically reflecting the light that surrounds them. By using gold, Amaral invokes the material’s religious and ceremonial uses in pre-Columbian society—and its plunder by the Spanish and presence in colonial art. Amaral studied architectural drafting in Colombia before completing graduate studies in fabric art at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan.
At age 22 with a degree in architectural design, Olga de Amaral moved from Bogotá to the United States where she studied fiber art at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Michigan. She returned to Colombia in 1955, and in 1956 she and her husband, Jim Amaral, opened a workshop of hand-woven textiles. De Amaral's distinctive large-scale abstract woven pieces are often covered in gold and silver leaf, lending them a shimmering, almost sculptural quality in contrast to the feeling of a tapestry. Her richly textured pieces evoke the varied natural landscapes of Colombia as well as ancient pre-Columbian gold artifacts. The artist's architectural background is evident in the precise sculptural quality of her works, but de Amaral says her craft is driven by emotion and that she does not plan for particular patterns to emerge.

Do you know where I could find some accessible and not overly ..bowlderdized? Colonialized?? Basically without the "they were just close friends"-ing that they do to most of the acessable summaries of other cultures? Or anything a layman could read about the ramayana that won't leave them with a horrifically racist aftertaste?
There are a lot of versions of the myth, so I can't promise any particular version, especially as translated into English, isn't "altered for the audience" so to speak. Overall, I think it's more helpful to look for summaries that are most accessible to you with awareness of their biases, than try to look for something free of biases.
I got a lot of my initial introduction to Hindu mythologies through Amar Chitra comics - a very popular comics producer in India focused on Indian history and Hindu mythology. That said, the comics are largely aimed at children, and the company/comics line is a bit on the nationalistic side. They have a U.S. distributor, and of course 🏴‍☠️ knows no borders.
There's also the 1992 anime Ramayana: The Legend of Prince Rama, available for free on YouTube. It's also aimed at kids, but does a good job of covering all the major beats of the story. If you go in with the awareness that this was a somewhat politicized project (it was co-produced between Japan and India, and at a time of political controversy related to Rama in India), then it's also a pretty good introduction to the myth.
(Edit: rewatched the movie for the first time in like 25 years and I underestimated how much I forgot. 😅😓 I should clarify that it's good for the action "plot" of the myth, but the surrounding story and context, not so much. So it's a good intro to the overall beats of the legend and important symbols, imagery, etc., but the underlying philosophy, not so much. I'd compare it to how Disney movie can provide a decent intro to the imagery and main characters and plot beats of a story like Cinderella or Hercules, but the details and context are flattened or removed to make it palatable to child and international audiences.)

From ferret electricians to landmine-sniffing rats – meet the extraordinary animals that work for a living
Sometimes the right person for the job isn’t a person at all …

Our relationship with animals is deeply peculiar, spanning the spectrum from besotted to breezily exploitative. Whether they are friends, pests, assets, dinner or catnip content creators, the relationship tends to be heavily skewed in our favour. We might look after our pets devotedly, but most animals aren’t so lucky in their encounters with us.
There are a few instances, however, where human interests and animals’ natural behaviours and inclinations more or less align. Most aren’t technically “mutualistic” interactions between two species that benefit both, like a clownfish hiding in and cleaning up its sea anemone. Even so, there is a cheering amount of win-win in a handful of our relationships with the natural world. Let’s take a look at some of that mutual back-scratching.
Bat librarians

The baroque Joanina Library at the University of Coimbra in Portugal is well known for its exquisitely detailed gilding and woodwork, but also for what its deputy director, António Maia do Amaral, calls its “honorary librarians”: bats. Amaral explains that there are two small colonies – free-tailed bats and pipistrelles – living in Joanina. They have been there for centuries: 18th-century library paperwork documents an order of large leather sheets from Russia; these sheets, known as “moscovias”, are still unrolled at night to protect the huge embossed tropical wood tables from bat droppings.

Whether the bat librarians are actually helping is a moot point. The assumption is that they feed on book-eating insects that could damage the library’s precious collection, but their droppings have never been analysed to check. “As far as I know, it has always been a peaceful coexistence, even if their role in pest control is maybe marginal,” says Amaral. “We cannot trust bats alone to preserve the books from flying insects. For that purpose, we have a six-cubic-metre anoxic chamber for cleaning the books.”
The bats are part of the library anyway, even if they are only occasionally spotted (usually at evening events, when they flutter out from the shelves to entertain guests). Visitors are intrigued – you can even get a baseball cap with a Joanina bat on it – but opinions within the library vary. “My first director was always very annoyed when asked about the bats’ existence,” says Amaral. “He felt that bats were the least important thing in the library, because he was such a cultured man. Nowadays, people are more often benevolent and amused with the bat story. Personally, I’m very happy with the bats and pray for their good health.”
The bats weren’t the only honorary librarians in previous centuries, Amaral adds. Historical library records included an annual sum in the budget for feeding Joanina’s mouse-hunting cats; you can still spot “cat doors” cut into the woodwork.
Ferret electricians
youtube
The cutest cable guys … ferrets strut their stuff on Channel 4.
“Ferrets are, if you want to be polite, inquisitive; if you want to be blunt, they’re nosy little devils,” says James McKay of the National Ferret School. “When you put them in any opening, they want to go through and see what’s at the other end.” Their curiosity, shape and sinuous flexibility mean they can get to places and do jobs no human could manage. Felicia the ferret became a furry pipe cleaner for the Fermilab particle accelerator in Illinois in 1971; ferrets wriggled under the floor of St Paul’s Cathedral to enable TV transmission of the royal wedding in 1981 and cabled the Millennium Dome (the work of three called Beckham, Posh and Baby).
Tumblr media
Naturally inquisitive … ferrets can squeeze into spaces that humans can’t. Photograph: Farlap/Alamy
How does the cabling work? The ferret wears a harness attached to a long, light nylon line. Once it has threaded the line through a duct, the line is attached to a heavier pull rope to thread the cable. Although there is some training involved – the school has a training area with a range of vertical and split pipes and cul-de-sacs – it is really a case of capitalising on the ferrets’ natural inclination to investigate holes. A bit of salmon oil at the far end of a long pipe as a reward can help them find their way. The furthest one of McKay’s ferrets has travelled is about 250 metres: “We’ve never had one get halfway and decide to come back.”
The school’s business (the delightful collective noun for ferrets) numbers about 50 and McKay usually takes half a dozen along on a job in case someone isn’t in the mood. The hobs (males, which are larger) can pull lines longer distances, while the smaller jills (females) are better at wriggling through the narrowest spaces. Does he have a favourite ferret? “They’re all as good as each other.”
Winemaking ducks and spiders

How winemaking ducks help Vergenoegd Löw vineyard – video
At the Vergenoegd Löw winery in South Africa, pest control on the vines is the responsibility of a flock of more than 1,000 Indian runner duck “soldiers”. They emerge in a cacophony of honks every morning and spend the day eating aphids, snails and worms, keeping the vines pest-free and healthy. They circulate in a 14-day loop around different areas of the vineyard, with their droppings providing a bonus fertiliser. The ducks take a break only during harvest – grapes are just too tempting – when they get a holiday to swim in a nearby lake, forage on farmland and, er, work on producing the next generation of vineyard soldiers.

Meanwhile, at the R López de Heredia winery in La Rioja, gigantic cobwebs drape the cellar walls and yet more cover the bottles. They aren’t Halloween props or atmospheric decor: they are home to the spiders who help the López de Heredia family keep their barrels and corks free from cork-eating moths – “the mortal enemy of long‑ageing wine”.
Diagnostic technician and demining rats
Tumblr media
Another fruitful endeavour … one of Apopo’s rats gets a tasty treat for identifying an inactive mine in Cambodia. Photograph: Taylor Weidman/Getty Images
The 300 African giant pouched rats employed by the NGO Apopo are multitalented. Not only have they worked on mine clearance in south-east Asia and Africa, but they also sniff out positive tuberculosis sputum samples.
Why are they so good at the job? “They’ve very smart; they’re sociable; they have an excellent sense of smell,” says Lily Shallom of Apopo. “In the past, we’ve found that they can smell a picogram of TNT – a trillionth of a gram.” The rats are “very motivated by food. They like to stuff their cheeks; they have a sweet tooth and they love anything that’s got a really high fat and protein content.” Peanuts and bananas are particular favourites.
The rats signal when they have found a mine by scratching at the surface of the ground. (Weighing a maximum of 1.5kg, the rats are much too light to set off a mine; none have been hurt in the field.) A TB sample, meanwhile, is flagged as potentially positive if a rat hovers over it for three seconds.
youtube
Reporting for duty … Apopo’s life-saving rats.
It’s a nice life for these highly sociable creatures. Training (which takes nine months on average) or work make up a tiny portion of the rats’ day: mine detection sessions last about 20 minutes, building up to half an hour. Assessing 100 TB samples – the standard batch size – takes a maximum of 20 minutes, but could take a human technician up to four days. The rest of the rats’ day is devoted to free play, hanging out with other rats, snacking and napping.
Apopo is always exploring potential uses for the rats’ special skillset at its training and research centre in Tanzania. Projects include searching for survivors of natural disasters, detecting illegally trafficked pangolin scales and decontaminating land, with the rats deployed to detect specific concentrations of hydrocarbons in soil.
Honey-hunting birds
Tumblr media
Birds of a feather … a honey hunter studies a greater honeyguide at the Niassa national reserve in Mozambique. Photograph: Claire Spottiswoode/AP
Humans and greater honeyguides have a genuinely mutualistic relationship: the small, brown‑ish African relative of the woodpecker flutters in front of people, tweeting to guide them to bees’ nests in hollow tree trunks. The humans then smoke out the potentially dangerous bees and take the honey. The honeyguide watches and waits until they have finished, then enjoys its preferred food: beeswax.
youtube
On song … how honeyguides talk to people.
In 2016, a research team at the University of Cambridge discovered that communication between honeyguides and humans goes both ways. They learned that honey hunters from the Yao community in Mozambique have a better chance of attracting honeyguides, and finding honey, if they use a specific sound: “A loud trill followed by a short grunt: brrr-hmm.” The call increased the overall chance of finding honey from 16% to 54% compared with control sounds. “The ‘brrr-hmm’ call more than tripled the chances of a successful interaction, yielding honey for the humans and wax for the bird,” reported Dr Claire Spottiswoode, who led the project.
Hawk bouncers
Tumblr media

Why do pigeons need to be deterred? According to Citihawk’s Leigh Holmes, they represent a twofold health hazard: “Pigeon fouling contains horrendous amounts of bacteria and parasites – and when wet it becomes very slippery,” she says. The hawks aren’t there to attack or eat the pigeons – that never happens, according to Holmes. They would rather fly back for chicken pieces held by their handlers. The aim is to scare them off and discourage them from returning. The theory, says Holmes, is that “pigeons see a natural predator that they are in-built to be fearful of … They disappear to find somewhere safer to roost, nest and feed.”
The hawks fly free, exploring wherever they like on the day’s site. “They love the exercise; they love getting out and flying,” says Holmes. She thinks they particularly relish working in urban areas. “They really enjoy some of the hustle and bustle, because they fly exceptionally well.” That freedom does mean they sometimes go awol. “They can be quite childlike at times and see a pigeon a street away or on another roof. They will literally just go to scare off other birds.” The hawks are fitted with trackers, so the handlers can follow their movements in real time.
Harris’s hawks are good at this work because they are naturally gregarious and used to hunting collaboratively in the wild, says Holmes. When trained by humans, they view their falconer as part of their hunting team. “They learn to read each other,” she says. “It’s incredible. It’s an amazing feeling for the staff members.”
Another big part of the falconer’s job is interacting with amazed and delighted members of the public: “The amount of photographs taken, the amount of interest and the amount of love for birds of prey … People just love it.”

MANIPULACION MEDIATICA COLONIAL

No. Teide (or Echeyde in its pre-colonial name) is not "one of the ten highest peaks in Europe". Teide is one of the ten highest volcanoes in Africa and one of the fifty highest peaks on the African continent with a prominence equal to or greater than 500 meters. Considering this geographical formation as "European" is part of a (symbolic) looting of Africa and is also clear proof of the colonial conception of a territory (Canary Islands) that is denied its own continental geography. Maps like this one, created by Amar Andalkar, a famous professional climber, pinpoint Teide alongside some of its continental "brothers."

Unfortunately, due to our illegal colonial situation in the member countries of the European community, Spain among them, they have stolen not only our geography, but also our dignity, identity, etc... as a people, among other important things. , which has seriously damaged the great social extruder of the Amazigh Canary Islands Africa. With a syndrome of brutal complexity, for which the recovery of a people subjected to domination, in all senses from a very early age under a regime of indoctrination, is not easy at all, for which it is still worrisome and at the same time a task difficult to restore, the naturalness of the African Amazigh canariedad.
For this reason, the FLNAC and other people individually or collectively continue to work despite the obstacles, the manipulations, the attempt to confuse the Amazigh Canarian public opinion, especially in false theories, editorials, documentaries, press conferences, false manifestos. , supposed groups and independence policies, etc... that tend to create messages of immobility, to follow that European colonial decline in the Amazigh African canaries, for this sense our duty and principles our road map will never go in the wrong decline of keep the Amazigh Canaries as part of Europe or Spain, the Amazigh Canaries must be in their place and continent of origin, which is Africa.
