Asian Readathon 2024
[ID: A black cat laying on purple patterned sheets in front of a stack of four books: Bliss Montage by Ling Ma, This is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone, Light from Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki, and The Night Parade: A Speculative Memoir by Jami Nakamura Lin. End ID.]
Even if I wanted to be an aesthetic blogger I couldn't. Not with my baby boy, Lito, taking every opportunity to lay on me.
It's AAPI month and I'm participating in the Asian Readathon! (See withcindy on YouTube for more details). I wanted to share some of the books I'm reading and talk briefly about my thoughts so far.
Sidenote: You should be reading Asian authors year round. If you aren't already, I recommend checking out Cindy's blog, looking at the kickass spreadsheet of books, and expanding your horizons.
Bliss Montage, Ling Ma
Features eight reality-bending stories about relationships with oneself and other people. Character-driven. Less than 250 pages. Check trigger warnings.
I chose this one to fit the prompt of a book that feels timeless based on the vibes of Ling Ma's first book, Severance (a personal favorite). She goes back and forth between past and present often, at times seamlessly between mere paragraphs, and it gives the feeling of time being stretched and almost uncertain. I greatly enjoyed it in Severance and suspected similar vibes in this book, and I'm not disappointed! I'm wondering if this is autobiographical fiction (it isn't advertised as such, but I can spot some of the shared events of Ma's actual life and the MC). This book is deeply intimate and, at times, very heavy. I'm only halfway through, and I already know it's going to be another favorite.
This is How You Lose the Time War, Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone
Adult Sapphic science fantasy about two rival agents on opposing sides of a war. Less than 200 pages (can you tell I like novellas?)
I've started this twice now, once on audiobook and once on ebook, before realizing neither format worked for me and buying a physical copy. I'm only two chapters in, but wow, if you enjoy competitive flirting, these two are incredible at it! I'll say more when I'm further along, but this is some quality writing.
Light from Uncommon Stars, Ryka Aoki
Sapphic science fantasy. A woman makes a deal with a demon to sell her soul for fame in the violin world and must convince seven other violin prodigies to sell theirs in order to get hers back. She finds number seven in a trans girl who runs away from home, and unexpected love with an alien woman who comes to Earth to escape a galactic Endplague. Check the trigger warnings!
I'm 300 pages in (out of almost 400) and this book makes me fucking feral. Apart from the main three characters stories, there are so many side characters with their own stories, and every single one weaves together in some way and packs a punch. I was sold on this book the moment I heard Queen of Hell, and it's just sucked me deeper and deeper. There are so many unexpected events in this book, so many moments that make me go "holy fucking shit?" You think you know what kind of book it is, then some off the wall shit happens and you have to reassess. This is such a deeply trans narrative (written by a trans woman), and as soon as I finish it I'm never going to shut up about it. Probably one of the best books I've ever read and I'm not done yet.
Once more, check the trigger warnings! Aoki is very good at making it super clear what's happening, while also not doing too much on-page (usually by either going light with the details, or fading the scene). But of all the talk about this book I've encountered, no one ever mentioned triggers and I foolishly assumed that meant that there weren't any major ones. There very much are. I'll start you off: transphobia, internalized transphobia, racism, sexual assault, self-harm, parental abuse (the book opens with this one, so mentally prepare yourself).
The Night Parade: A Speculative Memoir, Jami Nakamura Lin
A memoir that users the yōkai and various other figures from Japanese, Taiwanese, and Okinawan folktales to talk about grief in the face of the author's father's cancer and her struggles with Bipolar Disorder. Features amazing illustrations by her sister, Cori Nakamura Lin.
This sentence from the blurb took me out at the knees: "...Jami Nakamura Lin shines a light into dark corners, driven by a question: How do we learn to live with the things that haunt us?"
This is just fucking cool. It's a memoir that basically ripped up the rule book and does it so well. You're never certain if what you're reading really happened (and this is intentional). Stories that show the complexity and humanity of people with Bipolar Disorder are few and far between, so this book has a special place in my heart. It challenges the current narrative of mental health recovery in a way I've yet to see.
Other things I'll be reading:
The Garden of Delights by Amal Singh - Doesn't come out until mid-May, so I'll be waiting impatiently to enjoy it.
Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts. If you've read any of these books, come scream at me!

The Short Story Reader #47 - Island Circus by Amal Singh
Previous | Previous by Amal Singh | Next Like the last short story I read, “Island Circus” has a complex sibling dynamic at play, one the reader only experiences from the point of view of one sibling. Singh’s protagonist exhibits resentment and a forlorn sense of abandonment, but also love–much more so than Mona West’s protagonist did in “You Me and the End”. Where West’s story was apocalyptic,…

Mystic Hymn of Sant Tulsi Sahib: Dil ka Hujra Saf Kar - Light and Sound on The Path
“The original copy of ‘Ghat Ramayana’ written by Saint Tulsi Saheb kept in a glass case in the ashram of Saint Tulsi Saheb in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh.”
(Photo Courtesy of Pujya Satya Prakash Baba [and Pravesh K. Singh])
Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras had some Sufi or Muslim disciples. Sometimes he composed hymns for them, the most well-known of these being a hymn addressing Sheikh Taqi. The one below seems to be in this category. It was published in Ajaib’s Grace magazine, May-June 2003.
Param Sant Tulsi Sahib of Hathras, India:
Chorus:
Dil ka hujra (1) saf kar, jana ke ane ke liye,
Dhyan gairo ka utha uske bithane ke liye.
Translation:
Cleanse the chamber of your heart, so that the Beloved may enter,
Remove all the foreign impressions, so that He can take His seat there.
Verse:
Chashme dil se dekh yaha jo jo tamashe ho rahe,
Dilsita kya kya hai tere dil satane ke liye.
Translation:
See with the heart's eye the astonishing spectacle of this world,
Oh heart -- ravishing scenes appear there to entice you.
Ek dil lakho tamnna us pai aur zyada havis,
Phir thikana hai kaha uske tikane ke liye?
One heart, with many desires, and always the lust for more,
Where is there any place for the Lord to come and reside?
Nakali mandir masjido me jae sade aphosa hai,
Kudarati masjid ka sakin dukh uthone ke liye.
It is a great pity that, going in the false [imitation] temples and mosques,
The indweller of the true mosque [the human body] is made to suffer.
Kudarati kabe ki tu maharab me sun gaur se,
A rahi dhur se sada tere bulane ke liye.
We should listen with attention in the prayer niche of the true Kaaba, (2)
The Sound is coming from the Court of the Lord and is calling you.
Kyo bhatkata phir raha tu e talashe yar me,
Rasta shah rag me hai dilvar pai jane ke liye.
Why are you wandering around lost in search of the Beloved?
The way to reach the charming one lies through the shah rag (3)
Murshade kamil se mil sidak aur saburi se taki.
Jo tujhe dega faham shah rag ke pane ke liye.
O devotee, meet the Perfect Master with sincerity and patience.
He will give you the secret to find the shah rag.
Goshe batin ho kushada jo kare kuch din amal.
La ilaha allahu akbar pai jane ke liye.
If you do the practice for a few days, the inner way will open before you.
It is the path to reach Allah, the One God, the Most High.
Yah sada Tulsi ki hai amil amal kar dhyan de.
Kun kuran me hai likha allahu akbar ke liye.
This is the call of Tulsi: O practitioner, do the practice with concentration.
The kun [Shabd] described in the Koran, will take you to Allah, the Most High.

NOTES:
______
(1) A hujra is a small room for solitary meditation attached to a mosque.
(2) The Kaaba is the most holy place of Muslim pilgrimage in Mecca and the maharab or prayer niche indicates the direction facing the Kaaba in a mosque. The maharab or prayer niche of the true Kaaba is the third eye on the human forehead above and between the two eyes, alternatively called the Shiv netra or tisra til.
(3) The shah rag or "royal vein" is the central, subtle vein on the forehead that leads to Trikuti. It is also called sukhman nari.

it is the first of july and my second issue of clarkesworld magazine has dropped into my inbox, so let's go!
"every hopeless thing" by tia tashiro
3/5
our protagonist, elodie, is scavenging on an uninhabited and irradiated earth when she discovers that it IS inhabited after all -- people have been living underground this whole time. this one's pretty cute, it's about choosing to live on your own terms (and supporting others to do the same), and an extra cookie for a sassy AI. :)
"i will meet you when the artifacts end" by amal singh
4/5
initially seems to be about the romance between noori and jai on a dating app but goes a bit deeper as things go wrong on the ship (which is taking them to a new planet, sonagrah prime). very good at eliciting emotion and the feeling of uselessness you feel as an ordinary person when stuff is going on around you with the higher ups and it’s all just happening TO you and i enjoyed the indian perspective and worldbuilding (of the ship – shipbuilding???) – biomes in the ship have names like delhi and mumbai and the main character tries to replicate the temperature of a delhi winter with little success. i did find it a bit confusing to follow though and found myself a bit lost at times, though otherwise thought this was a very vivid piece.
"the best version of yourself" by grant collier
5/5
brb crying. need to walk around the block after this one. crying sobbing. not quite sure how to explain this one except that a company called eudaimon has invented this nanobot procedure that makes everybody into the ‘best’ version of themself and the person who they want to be and eventually go into a state of nirvana. the protagonist, maria, lives on a preserve, one of the few places in the world that hasn’t been taken over by the joyjelly. i don’t want to say too much tbh because i really think this deserves to be read, i found it dystopian and scary but also very deeply emotional and impactful and asks the question what does it really mean to be the best version of yourself and is that really what you want.

Taliban and others who exploit people in the name of religion, a shirt that you can change any time but not your tribal father are Shaitan Al-Djmar Al-Aksa, a very powerful Satan against Allah and his people. Bhindranwalla, Lala M.K. Gandhi, a Bania, Lala Tara Singh Malhotra Khatri, Lala Mohd. Ali Jinnah, Babla Bhatia, Ayatollah Khomeini, President Morsi, etc. are typical examples. Enter into the House of Allah. Then, this Satan cannot harm you. How do you enter the House of Allah where your soul and Amall count and not your tribe or riches? Here are the two Hajjs; one of Shariatt in which Eros unites you with your tribal people that Moses created in the wilderness called “lifting up of the snake”, the tribal rifts for Unity and is for 12 to 16 years old boys to establish their covenants with their Ilahs, their tribal fathers by keeping Kabah to their right-hand side for Ba-Ilah. Kabah is the Temple of Adam called Shiv or Shua, and Allah has nothing to do here. The Temple of Allah is One and that used to be the Mosque Al-Aksa where the Holiest of Holy existed. It used to have a Curtain around it and that Curtain was removed by Christ = Satguru Jesus by Preaching the Oral Torah, His Word, in Parables so that only the people of discerning intellect seeking the Gospel Truth could grasp them or Jesus didn’t throw Pearls before swine as His Two Saints in Genersate were doing and they were locked in the silence of the graveyard with heavy chains that the Messengers of our Father Allah broke but the local people could not perceive the Power of Allah; for harbouring the sons of Satan, the swine. Now, this Holiest of Holy exists in Amritsar. What does gold have to do with Allah? The word Allah is from Ilahs, our tribal fathers such as Jatt, Pathan, Gujjar, etc.; it is Al-Ilah, the One Supernatural Spiritual Father of our souls, the Fountain of NOOR AWALL ALLAH NOOR OPAYIA; KUDRATT DAE SABHH BANDAE. AIK NOOR TAE SABHH JAGG OPJAEYIA; KON BHALLAE KON MANDAE You cannot enter the House of Allah unless you kill your tribal ego called “Khudi”. The tribal “seed” is to be destroyed as you grow a plant, then the seed is destroyed but its identity is in the plant or in the House of Allah, the tribal identity becomes implicit whilst the spiritual identity in Allah becomes “EXPLICIT” Holy spirit, common sense, shatters the fetters of the dead letters, the Holy Books If we have One God, our Supernatural Father of our souls, then there should be one Faith Greatest Blasphemers and Killers Blair and Bush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9qHdTpTXHvE&list=PL0C8AFaJhsWz7HtQEhV91eAKugUw73PW1 Christ Jesus was killed by the hypocrite Temple High Priest. 2023 Short Stories
OK, I'm pretending I use this for anything other than clicking like on wry tumblr comments or reposting artists. But I'm still reading short stories, and tracking my favorites, and these are the ones that struck me the most in 2023, in order of reading from January onward:
Rabbit Test by Samantha Mills (Uncanny)
Samantha Mills is writing a dystopian future that is a little too close to home; I could barely stand to read it because it was so sharp.
The Big Glass Box and the Boys Inside by Isabel J. Kim (Apex)
Essentially everything by Isabel Kim is my favorite, but this one concerns the uncanny transformations of legal work.
The Museum of Erased Things by Maria Hossein (Translunar)
Haunting story about a museum of banned objects where any citizen who enters never emerges again, and despite the dictator's attempts to destroy it, it always reappears.
Unusual Times by Gail Ann Gibbs (Translunar)
A school building has to defend some of its students.
Professor Strong and the Brass Boys by Amal Singh (Apex)
Robots start a protest band.
A Girl is Blood, Spirit, and Fire by Somto Ihezue (PodCastle)
A novice rebels against the hierarchical system of her order.
Discreet Services Offered for Women Ridden by Hags by Stephanie Malia (Beneath Ceaseless Skies)
A doctor takes on her sister's soucouyant.
How to Stay Married to Baba Yaga by SM Hallow (Baffling Mag.)
Exactly what it sounds like, but it's also very poetic.
If You Find Yourself Speaking to God, Address God with the Formal You by John Chu (Uncanny Magazine)
I like ACAB superhero stories sometimes.
The God of Minor Troubles by Megan Chee (Strange Horizons)
A small god makes a big difference.
One For Sorrow, Two for Mirth by Tina Zhu (Strange Horizons)
Two pairs of estranged siblings cross paths over shadow magic and a murder.
The Relationship of Ink to Blood by Alex Langer (Apex)
A fascist clerk faces consequences for his role in disappearing people.
Measure Twice, Cut Once by KR March (Apex)
Capitalism, but the inhumanity is filtered through the magic of sewing a dress.
The Fox Roads by Nghi Vo (Tor.com)
Prohibition-era bank robbery, magic, and more than I can really summarize in one sentence.
Also, two short story collections and an anthology absolutely delighted me:
No One Will Come Back For Us by Premee Mohammad
I really love Mohammad's take on cosmic and eldritch horror.
White Cat, Black Dog by Kelly Link
Spot illustrations by Shaun Tan. The titular story nearly killed me because I was laughing while eating. What more do I need to say? But seriously, read it for White Cat, Black Dog alone.
Out There Screaming edited by Jordan Peele and John Joseph Adams
I knew I was going to pick this up for a lot of reasons: I can't remember if the first was the fact that a sheet of tin foil has been rendered terrifying, or because Jordan Peele is attached, or because it contains stories by NK Jemisin, Nnedi Okorafur, and Tananarive Due (and more), but anyway, pick it up I did and sleep restfully I did not.
All in all, I have read a grand total of 221 short stories and (not counted in that number) five collections and anthologies. I subscribed to Apex, Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet, and Apparition Lit.
Next year I'll be subscribing to Uncanny Magazine, renewing my Apex subscription, and picking up FIYAH, which I meant to do this year but honestly my bandwidth starts to taper off after two subscriptions. I read everything except the books I have, as one does.
