Alterous Air Time #2

Our previous song on Alterous Air Time was a bit more of a commentary on seclusion, and in contrast we have this very upbeat song about being bonded with someone! Especially celebrating queer non tradional love. This can definitely apply to our queer platonic siblings but due to this being AAT I’ll mostly be looking at this song with that fresh Alterous spin. I’d love to hear any queerplatonic takes on this song, or anyone in the community who identify with this song no matter the context!

Two Best Friends is a song about two best friends (from a 3rd person perspective) who are in love with each other, live together, write love letters, but aren’t “dating” / don’t acknowledge their relationship to others has anything but Best Friends.

One day my friend, they left the house

They met this girl, they told me about the fun they had, and in the end

She said "Hey, can we just stay friends?” But they don't care, it's totally fine

They fell in love with the quality time spent together, and all along

They'll just stay friends like nothing's wrong

I don’t have much to comment on this first verse as it sets up their relationship but! I think it says a lot about their relationship that from the start of them attempting to see if they like each other that they find comfort in their own grounds outside of dating. I think there’s a lot of fears in the alterous community of the idea of this situation ending horribly if they tried to do this. It’s nice to see a situation that works out very sweetly.

One braids her hair, picks out her outfits, the other one loves to drive them around the town

Everybody thinks they're meant to be and yeah they know but honestly who cares?

Guys loving alterously can be soooo sweet and fulfilling. The idea of two people finding such fulfillment in each other like this is so tooth aching to me. The way these two people are able to compliment each other’s lives while staying comfortable not defining things how conventional people would suggest. It’s such a great chorus that gets repeated like 3 times at the end with small interjections.

Everybody talks about all the rumors

I heard they met online like computers

I heard they walk with their hands close together

And somebody said they share the same bed

They hug and kiss and cuddle so close, they love handwriting love letter notes

And they share clothes— they're not the same size

But they don't care and no one knows why.

AND GOOD FOR THEM. I feel as though this speaks so well to how much everyone else cares. So those of us who are seeking a label will be unwillingly pushed into the “romantic” label. Which is hard when the relationship is mostly non-romantic. Meanwhile if there’s no label and you’re “friends” people put air quote around it and speculate on all the “more than friends” things people think are strange to do with a “friend”. Often times this is all very amatonormativity pilled. But I love the illustration here of how much the two don’t care how others see them because they are happy together.

I love this part and it goes on to repeat the “Put one foot in front of the other/two best friends in love with each other.” which I feel like speaks to this very, yes we don’t care about the “label” but we care about the love and happiness that is built off of the non traditional way the relationship comes across whether that’s a public detail or a private one.

They look each other in the eyes

And never leave each other's side

I heard that one of them proposed

But honestly nobody knows

I think something that raises the level of this song to me for an alterous perspective is the way it addresses this relationship. People complain about us “not understanding” how we feel or “you’ll meet someone eventually” type mentalities reject us fundamentally. But this song embraces ambiguity and is okay with the commitment people make to each other outside of expectations. The only reason these people are being looked at peculiarly in this song is because of their relationship where they are happy together and care for one another. This assumption from the masses that this relationship Has to be Something. And it probably is Something to these people, just not what those others would expect it to be.

This is a very nice song that can be interpreted as alterous joy! Which I really enjoy as it rejects some things that I think we can really struggle with (labeling ourselves, talking to others about our relationships, how others view and comment on us) and embraces a lot of joy despite that! Plus it’s a very fun song.

The attention to detail in your art, especially with anatomy and shapes is genuinely so inspiring. Seeing you enjoy these things so much reminds me to slow down and enjoy my own art process more which is something I didn't even know I was struggling with. Hm… I feel like maybe what happened with Fang and Aster is that Fang split into a fragment, partially fused with Kel (?) and then fused with the factive fragment. And… maybe Aster also split into a fragment and partially fused with the factive fragment to make Aspen/Scarlett? you know, wolf 359 is not really meant to be analyzed from a worldbuilding perspective, but, from a character perspective, one of the more interesting things about its alternate timeline is that line where hilbert says to minkowski,"there's something about a peacetime army that attracts people who want to know what it is like to kill someone but do not have the nerve to find out." the implication that minkowski, a career military woman in her 30s, joined the united states air force during peacetime and presumably has never faced real threat of active combat. it doesn't absolve her or any of the other characters with military history, but it is an interesting mitigating factor, and i think... while eiffel is absolutely not cut out to be a military man for a myriad of reasons, and while i think his history with the air force only really makes sense if you consider he joined because he didn't go to college and didn't have a whole lot of other options... it does make a little more sense he would consider it morally permissible with a history of and reasonably expected future of peacetime.

Terapagos Real Power?

A lot of people have been subscribing to the “Terapagos, wish granter” theory, and while I do think the idea is a really cool one, I think the truth is a lot more simpler actually. In fact, it’s even been spelled out for us, dangled right in front of our faces.

First off, there is this quote by AI Sada/AI Turo:

“Alter...optimize...terastilize...” Notice a common theme here?

Terapagos energy, in my opinion, doesn’t create something (eg. the wish theory) so much as tweak with something that is already there.  We already have examples of regional variants like Alolan Raichu or Persian or even convergent species like Wugtrio that look similar but are biologically different. I theorize that living in such close proximity to the crystals triggered a similar mutation in the Pokemon (eg. Donaphan) that were already living in the crater, to the point that they became almost different species altogether with different stats and abilities. The Paradox Pokemon are divergent species, ones that share a similar ancestor and genes as their counterparts but evolved differently. Heath even looks similar to famous naturalists like Charles Darwin or J. T Gluck, who chronicled various animals they saw and jotted down their physical and genetic variances.

That is how the Professors were able to build the time machine (they already had the blueprints), create the AI (with their own mind as a template to copy), as well as the creation of the Tera Orb (which alter the typing of a Pokemon, much the like Paradox Pokemon themselves are differently typed then their base counterparts). Their new powered up STABs bear a lot of similarities to the PP’s Protosynthesis or Quark Drive, in which both are boosted under specific conditions that are tailored to their “energy”. I theorize that sunlight or electricity under the right conditions can facilitate the power of a Tera Orb, explaining how they can temporarily power up without necessarily needing one (though they can still Terastilize if you so choose).

Sada and Turo harnessed this energy to create Paradox Pokemon. They already knew they existed via Heath’s journal, they just managed to direct the energy to create/copy more. I don’t know if they knew the “time machine” was fake or real (for all we know they could have been lying to the AI, considering it didn’t know about the PPP), but the portal seems to be more of a focusing lens-a Pokemon passes through the disk inside it’s specilzaied Master Ball, it’s genes are altered from the Terastilization energy, voila. The only question we don’t know is where exactly they are coming from.

Edit: I would also add that the first DLC coming in fall has hints of this to: we see Ogrepon hding it’s face, and it is specifically based on the Oni from the Momotaro myth. What if some incident made it so misshapen, it requires a mask with Tera crystals in order to function or hide itself?

Alterous Air Time!

Alterous radio tuning in to give you Valerie by TV Girl!

I got into TV Girl a few years back and listened to their whole discography and this was one of the ones that drew me back some time later to add to a playlist of mine. And it really fits well! I give music the good old queer interpretations through specifically the alterous lens!

Valerie describes a 22 year old girl who struggles opening up to others and relating to relationships the general public shows her she “should” have.

And sick of people telling her to grow up

It just gets worse the more you wait

And you could easily find a date if you only wanted to

You're such a pretty girl

From your lavender hair down to your combat boots

She tried hard to get that feeling

That comes easy to you and I

I think additionally this song is really interesting as it would come from an allo’s perspective on an alterous person’s world? Which you can feel the amatonormativity she has faced through his (narrator’s) wordage. The expectations society and people close to you have on your life. And she tries to relate to what others are really saying but it isn’t “easy” to her.

This hints to larger aromantic/arospec or aplatonic/apl spec themes she seems to face.

And if you never knew nobody

Then how'd you ever know that you were lonely?

She'd known someone who had

And if that's the case then what's the point in knowing

These lyrics are weird but I think they paint this interesting picture on the plight here. This contemplation about loneliness and what people need. And the futile feeling of what the world tells her vs what she knows. The complex dynamic of “I don’t want to get close with someone like that” vs. the pull that says “but maybe I want Some kind of relationship…”

She stood there in the open for everyone to see

Too proud to ask for anybody's help

She had this revelation

The sheer amount of work that it would take to be like everybody else

But she didn't want them anyways

She's no damsel in distress, she just sipped her daiquiri

And wished she wasn't easily convinced

I like seeing this section in the kind of push and pull of the aro spectrum at times. In a very aroflux way. Being self confident while also feeling as though you’re missing something! And that resulting in confusion as she tries to figure out how she actually feels.

there’s a reason why the entire story of avatar the last airbender begins and ends with katara. there’s a reason why we are introduced to katara first before we are introduced to any other character. there’s a reason why katara is the narrator. there’s a reason why the creators have emphasized over and over again that katara is just as titular to the story as aang - she’s the other main character.

when you water down katara - remove her compassion, her ability to connect with others, her nurturing role, her ANGER and RAGE and DRIVE - you water down the very fundamentals of the story. you drastically and severely alter the core dynamics of the gaang, because katara was so important to the development of every single one of them. she was the rock and glue that held team avatar together.

katara was unlike any other character to ever appear on television; she was a young brown girl who took no shit from anyone, yet at the same time remained kind and compassionate and nurturing. katara was a force of nature; proud of her heritage and culture, burdened by the responsibility of being the last southern water bender of the water tribe, angered over the death of her mother and everything that the fire nation took from her, determined to help every single person in need, determined to change the world, angry and resentful because old men and rules and laws kept telling her what she could or could not do, thus, she was determined to restructure thousands of years of patriarchy that stood against her from accomplishing her goals and dreams.

watering down katara into at most 2-3 tangible characteristics, stripping her away of all her motivation and agency and nuance, telling the audience that she wants to help and change the world only to have her stand in the background with an air of grief, demonstrates that the writers of the live action fundamentally misunderstand the spirit of avatar. and that’s something so unforgivable. no matter how many changes they decide to make, or how much they decide to stay true to the original story in other areas, no matter how many flashy VFX fight scenes we get - if you fail to properly understand katara, you fail to understand the heart and soul of avatar the last airbender, everything that makes avatar such a timeless classic.
