𝐀 𝐁𝐨𝐱 𝐎𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐑𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐞𝐰:
-𝐉𝐨𝐤𝐞𝐫: 𝐅𝐨𝐥𝐢𝐞 à 𝐃𝐞𝐮𝐱
My Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ☆
❗️spoilers ahead❗️
-I’d like to preface this review before starting, this is my own personal opinion and experience with viewing the movie-
This series is possibly one of my favorite DC series. From the cinematography to the devotion from the actors, right down to the color theory. Almost everything about both movies were gorgeous. The underlying message of mental health is also such a hard hitter. Watching all of these characters deal with their own issues is like watching real life at times.
The first Joker film introduces us to Arthur Fleck as a man. Throughout this first movie we get to see Fleck slowly becoming this alter persona of Joker he has created. While the first movie is full of deep metaphors for mental illness along with cinematic experiences; it also plays to Jokers mindset. Violence, gore, insanity. The second joker film however, flips this script entirely. Instead we get to see how the audience never really perceives Arthur for who he believes he is: sick and helpless. Instead we see the jury turn him into a fool, his supposed supporters make him into this performer, and even Harley uses him to her own advantage.
We start with Fleck where he left off in the first movie. In a mental institution under heavy medication while also working through the murder trial of the 5 people he’s killed. The entire movie starts with the dark blueish green color palette we are used to from joker however, the opening scenes include a shot of Arthur walking through this institution with guards as it rains. When we see this initially the guard’s umbrellas are black. Then once we see Arthur look up and get a Birds Eye view the umbrellas match the colors of the Murray show. Almost a homage to the first movie and a redharring to the rest of this movie. Which includes Arthur creating this fake version of his own show in his mind, solidifying him switching between Joker and Arthur. Just a small example of the things to look for when his mindset switches between reality and delusion.
The biggest gripes I’ve noticed with other reviews of this movie is that it’s a musical and the lack of action(gore) so to speak. My biggest issue with these arguments is this is how they set up the entire premise of this series. When Arthur hears and feels music it’s like flipping the switch to his alter ego. Without the music we wouldn’t see the struggle he goes through of just maneuvering his own mind. On the side of the gore you have to understand throughout this movie that Fleck does not really WANT to be Joker. It is him coming to terms with the fact Joker is essentially the embodiment of his trauma into a character. Although there are quite a few action packed moments and even some deeply disturbing moments. This is the story of Joker becoming Arthur Fleck not the other way around.
With all of that being said, the ending to this movie is the only reason I’ve decided to keep this movie off my 5 star list. At the end of it all when Arthur has lost nearly everything we are surprised to find that Arthur gets murdered in the same institution he began in. While it’s just as beautiful and cinematic as the rest of the movie it didn’t quite make sense in my head. Who is the man that stabs him? Is there an ulterior motive or just an end to the game? Lots of questions left to answer. After discussing with fellow friends that are much deeper into the DC fandom they seemed just as confused. I’m excited to see what they do with the rest of the series or if they continue it in any fashion at all. Personally I would have liked to see this version of Joker in the newer Batman universe with Robert Pattinson, as it seems to fit the narrative they were building. If you have any more ideas or input let me know!

⭕️❗️wait wait wait it would be so interesting if after getting away from nightmare and living with color for a while they either split or rediscovered an “apparently normal” type alter
Like if they worked like a CDD system it would make a lot of sense that such a huge change in their life would end up with someone new showing up, but it doesn’t necessarily have to literally be someone new. Like maybe once they’re starting to recover they have an old host come out of dormancy and he’d have to figure out what the fuck is going on and how to cope with sharing a SOUL with these crazy assholes that took over his life for who knows how long. He’d want to just go back to his old life but they can’t really do that anymore, and he’d probably have a *really bad time* coming to terms with everything that happened since he went dormant (probably around the time their SOUL first started changing). Ugh there is so much potential for angst here god I wish I was a fanfic writer rn
Even if it was a totally new person forming because of the changes in their life though I’d be so interesting cause the new person might end up looking down on the others and seeing them as a problem and trying to force them out because they aren’t suited to their new life, the new person might be so focused on just trying to live a normal life that they end up stunting their healing process and just suppressing everything. And like it’s entirely possible that the others would think that’s a good thing too and it might end up just being completely up to color to remind them that all of them deserve to live and heal and they don’t need to disappear just because they aren’t as useful anymore?? God I love this idea so much it’s gonna be stewing in my brain all day hhhhhh I wish I was a fanfic writer I wish I was a fanfic writer 😭
If Killer were to gain another alter/stage what would you think about it or how would you think Color would take it?
Either one of being more unstable in need of comfort type of stage or more disoriented violent stage etc.
Well, if we’re going with the interpretation that killers stages are something like alters or that it’s possible for him to develop other stages, then I’m assuming it’d have something to do with tampering his soul or codes. Or in the case of systems, stress or trauma.
Or just something that killers other stages aren’t able to handle, so his mind/soul work to develop another—in this case of being similar to an alter, it’d be “split,” but in case of something like OSDD2 (not OSDD-1B, they are different) it may be moreso something killer feels he needs to develop to survive or someone convinces or coerces him into thinking he does. (which is likely to involve very abusive and violent things, such as torture, gaslighting, and perhaps drugging.)
Of course disclaimer that I am not a system, so don’t take my word for all this. Systems are welcome to share their thoughts and opinions, or just add some information or correct me, however you please.
If it were a more scared, or angry stage, it may be the results of something that pushed killer more than he was capable of handling in terms of trauma. such as a specific moment during a punishment or while out on a mission, maybe. we’ve seen how dangerous killers stage 2 can be, stages 3 and 4 even more so. color may have to focus on preventing damage to himself, killer, and others, and attempt to switch him back to a lower stage. so he and killer can come up with ways to navigate this new situation.
if it were a more unstable, in need of comfort stage, I suppose it matters on what exactly triggered this, and if color would be recognized as someone comforting and trustworthy.
even “simple” things can cause splits for systems, I’ve heard. every system has different stress levels and coping mechanisms and splitting frequencies. perhaps this type of stage could be formed from the unbearable stress and anxiety and uncertainty of trying to navigate a life with color. A “normal” safe life.
perhaps this stage is either better equipped to handle it, or this stage holds all the emotions about it so other stages can handle the situation. if it’s the latter perhaps color wouldn’t be a source of comfort exactly, because the stress comes from things around color or perhaps color himself (unknowingly, unintentionally, not colors fault), but he may feel familiar. so perhaps just sitting with this killer in this new stage, talking to it, letting it come to him when it’s ready would be a better approach.
Now if we go with the idea that this new stage is here because of tampering with his soul and his codes, that begs the question. Who did it? Why did they do it? Was it intentional? Was there a purpose? What was the circumstances surrounding what’s basically the equivalent of reprogramming or adding on to killers existing codes.
If there was a purpose, then this stage is likely to do whatever it has to, in order to carry that out. whatever it may be.
