The Ultimate Guide to the Red Star System! (AKA: What the Fuck are We Doing?)

Hello, everyone! It’s been quite some time since we’ve made something ourselves, and we figured that it’s high time we try to do that. Today, we saw a post about how someone should post a thing about how their system works, how their headspace looks, etc.. So I, the host, wanted to do just that. It may be mostly me typing this up, but the others may chime in from time to time. I’ll have to color the paragraphs accordingly whenever we reach the final stages of editing this massive wall of text.

(Note: There may be a new face appearing in this document-- I’m not sure if he’s ready to talk yet, but he is here as we type this.)

So, where should we start? Ah, I know!

System Structure

The structure of this system is somewhat based on a sci-fi space crew; think Star Trek. Internally, there are only two sets of ranks so far, but there may be more in the future. These ranks include: Medical Officers, and Security Officers. These rank sets divide further, depending on the headmate’s purpose. For example: if someone has the rank of Chief Medical Officer, it means that their primary job is to make sure that my physical needs, medical or otherwise, are met. They can also ask other Medical Officers, or Security Officers to check in on me whenever need be. Now, let’s look at who’s in what rank in the system!

Members & Ranks

    • Knockout is, as stated in our pinned introduction, the Chief Medical Officer. As I said above, his job is to make sure my body’s needs are met. And, he also counsels me on what actions to take in regards to my health.

(Note: Since he isn’t human, he can’t truly discern what the human body requires to function; aside from organs. So, he always tells me to contact my doctor.)

    • Breakdown is simply a normal Medical Officer. This basically means that he’s a nurse of sorts. His job, like Knockout, is to monitor my physical state, and help me do things to better my health-- mostly through suggestion. He also doubles as a Security Officer, meaning that he protects me from certain things; mostly emotional stressors.

  • Starscream is a Security Officer. However, unlike Breakdown, he protects me from confrontation. If there’s any sign of aggression, he steps up to the front to handle it. Or, he advises me through it while he’s co-conscious. He’s also a Boundary Enforcer, meaning he helps me set hard boundaries on whatever makes me uncomfortable.

    • Nanaki is a Councilor, meaning that he offers advice in times of turmoil or distress. He aids mostly in helping me deal with my anxiety.

    • Cloud is, like Starscream, a Security Officer. However, his duty is to protect me whenever I’m in social situations that involve crowds. So, think crowd control. Whenever I start getting nervous in crowds, he fronts.

    • Miguel is Head of Security. Whenever there is a perceived threat, physical or otherwise, it’s his job to handle it. He’s a lot more aggressive than the other Security Officers, so he may come off as nasty to some.

    • ???: Given what he does in his universe, I’m willing to say he’s a Security officer. (That’s me! Heyyo! :3c)

Are There Any Differences Between Your System Members & Their Canon Selves?

For some, yes. Others, no.

Knockout, Breakdown, and Starscream aren’t all that different from what’s seen in Transformers Prime. However, the one difference with them is that they joined the Autobots’ side some time after the events started.

Cloud and Nanaki are the same as their canon depictions.

Miguel, on the other hand, is a stark contrast to what we see in ATSV. He has a ton of differences, both physically and in regards to personality. For starters, his defining physical characteristics are that he has gray hair on the back of his neck. On his face, are two scars. One over his left eyebrow, and one going kitty corner-- left to right, across his lips. His eyes are red, and he wears a black, white, and red suit. Personality wise, he’s a lot calmer, and a lot sweeter when you get to know him. He’s also not as willing to resort to violence (So no, he didn’t hurt Miles.). He’ll only get aggressive if he has to. He’s also very accommodating to others’ needs (See the Headspace section!).

??? is very similar to what we see in his canon depiction. However, he still has his wings in their entirety.

System Type

Our system is Endogenic in origin, meaning we do not stem from trauma. However, that doesn’t mean we aren’t disordered. As you’re about to read, Shane has some disorders of his own that may have resulted in our arrival here.

The Host

Hi there! I’m the host-- you know, the one typing all this up! You can call me Shane or Sylum. I’m physically disabled-- Muscular Dystrophy, to be specific. I’ve had it since I was born, meaning I can’t do any physical activities without assistance; aside from typing, of course. Aside from that, I also have diabetes. On the mental side of things, I have both anxiety and depression. And, on the developmental side, I have Inattentive Type ADHD, formerly known as ADD. So, as Knockout said up there, I’m disordered. Fun stuff, huh?

So...What’s it Like?

Well, as someone who’s usually really bad at descriptions as it is, I find it really hard to describe my experiences. Compared to able-bodied system hosts, there are so many differences. If I were to list them all out, we’d likely be here forever. Overall though, I think I can say it’s fairly boring.

For able-bodied system members, like me, and well...Everyone else here, it’s kinda unnerving whenever we front sometimes. Knowing what Shane’s body needs, and not being able to physically meet those needs can be upsetting. So, we usually just give him a mental poke when something’s off. Or, we’ll co-front until he does what he needs to. Like now! Most of us are up here, adding our two cents, or watching him work.

Literally everyone’s up here, and it’s making my brain fuzz out like an old, overused VHS tape.

So, you kinda know what my experience is like, but there’s another question to ask:

What Does Your Headspace Look Like?

Ah, the headspace. The place where you and your headmates/system mates go to hang out and do whatever the hell they do when they’re not busy. For some folks, the headspace either doesn’t exist, or they’re hyper specific and detailed to the Nth degree. For me, it’s somewhere in the middle; it’s there, it might be a tad specific, and it’s somewhat detailed.

Due to my tendency to hyperfixate on certain pieces of media, it tends to change from time to time. Most of the time, however, it stays in one form. If you’ve seen the movie Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, then you may be familiar with Miguel’s gargantuan base. The tower that’s several miles high, and hella expansive. Well, imagine that, but slightly different. And I mean slightly. The only key difference is that the corridors are painted different colors so that I can find my way around. (I get lost easily in a Walmart for fuck’s sake. Don’t @ me. Lol) The main space, where I tend to hang at, is Miguel’s lab. And yes: He has that raising platform you see in the movie. And yes: It’s as hilariously dramatic as depicted.

The base itself acts as a hub of sorts, where the others can come and go as they please.

So, How Does All of This Work?

Well, there isn’t really a set method to how we do things here. Usually, whoever’s free gets to look after me. It goes down the chain:

Is Knockout busy? Breakdown watches me. Is Breakdown busy? Then, Starscream watches me. Etc. Etc. on down the list.

Who’s the Most Active?

Sometimes, it’s hard to gauge who’s active on any given day; especially when I’m not feeling well. However, going off the short time we used Simply Plural, I’d say both Nanaki and Miguel are the most active. Nanaki’s always free, so he’s usually up front with me. Whereas Miguel briefly fronts to check in and make sure I’m okay. He sometimes sticks around if something triggers my fear response. His presence is very soothing for me.

Recently, the new guy’s been very active, so he’s definitely on par with Nanaki and Miguel already.

Do You Have A Relationship Beyond Systemhood?

Shane’s a little nervous about writing this bit, so I’m taking it from here. He has a relationship with me, Knockout, Breakdown, Starscream, and the new guy. The mechanics of it are complicated–too complicated to really go into here. What I can say is that it’s a very close relationship.

exotics make the noise, boys, but legendaries do the work.

After so many posts celebrating Destiny’s exotics I feel compelled to pay tribute to the other, far larger portion of the weapon pool: the legendary gear that pulls its weight all day every day. These are my top five all-arounders, the weapons I infuse up first, the ones I go to when I don’t know what I’m going up against. These are:

Blast Furnace / Hammerhead

Type: Pulse Rifle / Machine Gun

Slot: Kinetic / Heavy (Void)

Perks: Outlaw+Rampage / Dynamic Sway Reduction+Rampage

Kills: 16827 / 8697

Two of the Black Armory’s pieces, the Blast Furnace pulse rifle (shown here with the Verdigris shader) and Hammerhead machine gun (Amethyst Veil shader) still pull their weight a year after their introduction. Falling squarely on the scifi end of Destiny's scifi-fantasy spectrum, Black Armory weapons are easily recognized by their sleek-but-practical look, not flashy but new and designed and manufactured with great care. They have open straight-edged cowlings with visible internals and usually show traces of the Black Armory’s signature moiré-pattern animation.

Blast Furnace superseded Forsaken’s Go Figure pulse rifle (another of my go-to kinetics) with better stats in pretty much every column. The pulse rifle archetype is already one of Destiny’s best and Blast Furnace’s great stats, great perk pool, good chatter, and friendly sights - not to mention the ease of farming for the roll you want by completing Black Armory weapon frames instead of hoping for a random drop - plant it squarely in most Guardians’ top 10 if not 5. My chosen roll is Outlaw (reload much faster immediately after a precision kill) and Rampage (damage increases with each kill, stacks up to 3x), a classic top-tier perk set.

Hammerhead was one of the first non-exotic machine guns introduced and its decent range (here extended by Ricochet Rounds), 59-round clip, and fast-but-not-too-fast 450 RPM fire rate put it right at the sweet spot where it performs well against both large numbers of weaker enemies or a handful of powerful ones. It also fares well in PvP where heavy ammo is very rare and Hammerhead’s ability to put paid to a Guardian in 5 or 6 solid hits means you get more effective bang for your heavy ammo crate buck. My Hammerhead features Rampage and Dynamic Sway Reduction (holding down the trigger boosts accuracy over time) which doesn't come up much when firing short bursts but helps a lot when pouring an entire clip into a boss’ crit spot. Whenever I’m running an Energy-slot exotic or if I just don’t want to think too hard about my loadout, it’s a good bet I’ll throw on one or both of these weapons.

Subtle Calamity

Type: Bow

Slot: Energy (Void element)

Perk: Dragonfly/Archer’s Tempo

Kills: 11806

Subtle Calamity (Clouds At Sea shader) has no great lore or storied manufacturer behind it; it’s a general world loot drop added in Forsaken. And it’s great. I was already pumped for the addition of bows and Subtle Calamity ended up hitting the sweet spot for daily use. With bows the key stat is draw time; longer draw times equal more power but also, well, longer draw times. Hence why I went for the perk Archer's Tempo, which decreases draw time as you land precision hits. It also has the Dragonfly perk, a flashy ability I like probably more than it deserves, which causes enemies killed with precision hits to explode into AoE elemental damage. Bows are a lot of fun, occupying the middle ground between Auto Rifles and Sniper Rifles that Scout Rifles were supposed to fill, and given how lousy I am with snipers if I need to land precision hits I'll usually go for a bow instead.

In-universe, what's the explanation for Guardians suddenly getting into bows? It's because of the events of Forsaken and the Guardian push into the Tangled Shore and Dreaming City i.e. into more regular contact with the Awoken, for whom it's a culturally-significant weapon - something like a claymore to a Scot or a katana to the Japanese. More pragmatically when the Awoken first returned to our solar system and settled in the lashed-together space derelict habitats of the Reef they faced the problem of using weapons inside said space habitats as well as launching cables and small satellites. Their solution was bows: strong enough to fly far, carry payloads, and deal damage, but unlikely to pierce a hull and far easier to manufacture than firearms. Awoken Corsairs still use bows as near-silent precision weapons in actual combat, relying on technologically-advanced payloads to deal the real damage. Or not so advanced - Sjur Eido puts a broadhead arrow through an inch of Guardian plate armor with little more than determination, skill, and the properties of whatever magical material Wish-Ender is made from.

Tigerspite / Age-Old Bond

Type: Auto Rifle / Auto Rifle

Slot: Kinetic / Energy (Void)

Perks: Outlaw+Kill Clip / Rampage+Fourth Time's The Charm

Kills: 14623 / 11863

Though they come from different sources in-game, I’ve grouped these two together because they’re both Awoken weapons. Age-Old Bond (Circadian Chill shader) drops from the first encounter of the Last Wish raid while Tigerspite (Night’s Chill shader) comes from activities in the Dreaming City. I love both of these weapons and use them all the time even when they’re not ideal for the situation at hand. Tigerspite, like the rest of the Dreaming City weapon set, has an elven high-fantasy style featuring cloth wrappings (?) and long, sinuous curves. The Last Wish raid set has a similar aesthetic but goes for a combination of carved-bone paneling and animated celestial diagrams that recall Awoken tech displays.

Fun lore note: Tigerspite is one of the few non-exotics to be mentioned by name in the lore. Sjur Eido selects a Tigerspite for one round of her duel with Uldren Sov back in the Distributary. It gets referenced again as a standard Awoken weapon after their return to our solar system, so it’s had quite the service life. Tigerspite’s stats were superseded a while ago by newer auto rifles but I love its sights and feel and keep using it anyway. Outlaw (faster reload on precision kill) and Kill Clip (increased damage immediately after reloading after a kill) are a classic weapon perk combo that’s always in season. Also I’m pretty sure a cat gave me this gun. Not a cat-cat, a Dreaming Kitty, one of the nine adorable stone cat statues hidden in the Dreaming City. While doing Dreaming City activities you’ll sometimes pick up an item called “A Small Gift,” a dish of something that “smells faintly of mint.” Since catnip is a member of the mint family, that’s your hint to bring that gift to your nearest Dreaming Kitty. Doing so rewards a weapon and causes the chosen statue to disappear. I’m pretty sure the first or second kitty I ever found gave me this specific gun, which just seems appropriate given its name.

Age-Old Bond is a special weapon to me. It comes from the first fight of the Last Wish raid, an encounter with the Taken Techeun Kalli, the Corrupted, and was the first fight I ever completed with my informal raid crew named “World’s Worst Fireteam.” Last Wish released at 550-590 light at a time when most Guardians were still trying to crack 530 and thus could barely handle redbars on raid day one. We were like most Guardians. But we were unlike most Guardians in being stupid and stubborn, and so we went into the raid anyway, because if we couldn’t get World First, we could still get World’s Worst. We never had a chance at the full raid, but after great struggle and great teamwork we finally managed to bring down Kalli and net ourselves our first Last Wish raid drops. For me that drop was this specific auto rifle - which is not just sentimental, but actually special. Some legendary weapons in Destiny have “curated” rolls, perk and stat combinations chosen by Bungie to be top-tier if not the best possible. Anytime you get a weapon drop you have the chance to get a curated drop instead, which comes fully-masterworked with those chosen perks. Age-Old Bond’s curated roll was the only one at the time with the new Fourth Time’s The Charm perk; when you land four rapid precision hits (they don't have to be sequential) it refunds two rounds directly back to the magazine. This does more than you might think for the weapon’s versatility, since if you’re pouring fire into a single target’s crit spot (i.e. a boss) it effectively gives the weapon 50% more clip i.e. a solid 48 rounds before you have to reload. It won’t replace a Heavy or high-DPS weapon anytime soon, but it’s pretty handy in a tight spot. The other perks on the curated roll max out Age-Old Bond’s range stat compared to other auto rifles, one of the dump stats of that archetype, and with a Counterbalance Stock mod to reduce recoil it’s practically a trace rifle.

I do favor these five weapons, but I also try to mix it up - I picked these five based on my top kill counts, but that biases it towards Y2 guns that have been in service longer. Plenty of newer weapons routinely turn up in my loadout these days: the pleasant chatter and Demolitionist perks of Outlast, Full Court/Field Prep Love and Death, the delightful new kinetic bow Accrued Redemption, Shaxx's broke-ass Crucible pinnacle weapon The Recluse, last season's snappy Patron of Lost Causes, the 600 RPM bullet-hose Arc Logic, and of course the reliable, venerable Y1 IKELOS shotgun. But in the end the only wrong loadout is one you don't enjoy, and the best choice is whatever you find the most fun.

So did you see the "ice popsicle" teaser? It's supposed to be foreshadowing one of the darker moments of Season 7. Do you have any theories on what it could mean? There are people who think it's foreshadowing that Pidge will betray the team, but I can't bring myself to believe that's true.

I saw the ice pop thing, and the version I saw was hypothesizing that Pidge would be captured, which I find far more likely than Pidge turning traitor.

Let’s just, for the moment, take every other reason Pidge wouldn’t- solidarity and teamwork and friendship and how much Pidge loves her friends and loves her family and would have every reason to resent anybody still fighting for Zarkon’s cause- clear the table of all that, and just poke at the practical.

What’s the empire got right now that Pidge wants bad enough to sell out her second family for it?

‘Cause just from where I’m sitting... not much.

Earth’s safety? Oh, pshyeah, like Sendak and Haggar are gonna actually keep their word and not get itchy fingers for the keys to Voltron. Pidge specifically has been around that song and dance especially when it comes to her family, and what she learned from that was that Zarkon is a dirty liar and it’s fair to assume his lovely wife and the person he practically raised as his own are gonna be about the same.

Heck, that kinda puts a damper on Pidge even seriously considering any olive branch Haggar or Sendak might wave at her- because the last time Pidge even considered taking them up on an offer, it was baited with probably the most valuable thing Pidge could ever imagine, and they burned her, bad. That makes me pretty sure the only time Pidge would really go for an offer Haggar would seem to make would be if she’s also seeking to fulfill an unspoken term of “and in return you will conveniently put your back in my taserin’ range”

Especially if the empire tries to pull a hostage situation with Earth... that’s not gonna be surprising or shocking to any of the team. They’ve been taking it as a given since season 1 that the empire is factually going to come for Earth. The word Allura uses in the very first episode is “inevitable”. Pidge hugged her dad goodbye and sent him home because everybody’s on the same page that the empire’s gonna attack Earth. And if they try to suggest hostage swaps... again, Pidge is the last person who’d look seriously at that bait because s5e2 is basically a case study in “Zarkon is a double-crossing cheat”.

And Sendak? Sendak’s literally named his faction the most blatantly white supremacist sounding bullshit ever- the “purity” he’s touting is no non-galra, no mixed race galra- and definitely no galra who ideologically disagree with Sendak’s game plan, either. There’s nowhere in this ideology that even the most fawning sycophant who’s not a “pure” galra could survive. And Pidge is the furthest thing from a fawning sycophant. She’s done a lot of damage to the empire and to Sendak personally- he’s not going to forget for a second how much of a threat she is. Even if he had any intention of genuinely negotiating, he’s not going to be satisfied until Pidge is muzzled and defanged in every conceivable way.

Pidge betraying the team isn’t a plot twist, it’s a stupid mistake. Her selling out Lotor in s5e2 was understandable because Zarkon was demanding someone she didn’t trust or care about and threatening the safety of someone who’s been half her driving motivation since the first episode in exchange- and that made her desperate enough to overlook how obviously likely it would be that Zarkon would double-cross them. If you’re not convinced she wouldn’t make the same mistake twice, I’d rewatch s5e2 and the way Pidge screams when she passes through the hologram of her father.

Pidge is going to do things that work or that at least seem reasonable from where she’s sitting. She’s gonna do something that she has a reason to believe or at least hope it’ll work out in her favor.

Right now? Empire’s got nothin’ on her.

Now, it is possible Pidge might cut an under-the-table deal with someone else, however.

The generals can nicely dodge a lot of the problems that Pidge would have with the main empire- namely the one where “I have no reason to believe you’re not immediately gonna double-cross me within point five seconds because you hate my entire existence and I’m your number one enemy.”

The whole of Team Sincline dances an interesting line of antiheroics- unlike Zarkon, Sendak, and Haggar, Sincline is able to prove reasonable to the heroes’ sensibilities, and depending on how the situation is, and where everybody stands? We’ve seen that long-term alliances between members can hold pretty strongly- at least, strong enough Allura, who’s nobody’s idiot, actually tried to start a relationship with Lotor.

And the Generals actually have some pretty good rep at this point- because when Lotor went hog wild attacking the paladins, the Generals disengaged. They backed off where he didn’t- and that’s something they could point to, if they had to thaw the heart of someone holding Lotor’s actions against them.

The generals could also have an easier ratio of offering Pidge something she couldn’t otherwise get, something really worthwhile- because they’re all about procuring unusual resources through sneaky channels.

Of course, the other side of this is it could be the Generals involved... but they might not be asking. Or offering.

It’s canon that magical entities, like the Black Lion, to save someone from death by taking their spirit into themselves. Presumably Black could do this for Shiro because he was right with them when he died and they had a mind-to-mind connection.

When Narti was killed, the camera lingered heavily on Kova, to the point that it returned to showing him next to Narti’s body at a point when every other character had abandoned the cruiser and was far away from it.

Kova also has a mind-to-mind connection with Narti and was right there with her when she died.

Narti is pretty clearly Pidge’s opposite number out of Team Sincline- the infiltrating, stealth-based “hacker”. This is something I’ve found suspicious for a while- since they obviously went out of their way to invoke her with Sincline’s final assembled form, and set her up parallel to a paladin, but her arc “seems” incomplete- which I don’t think is a testament to bad writing since no other dead character in the series, even ones who could have had interesting potential like Trigel, Gyrgan, and Blaytz feel unfinished in this way.

Especially because, again- Shiro’s return raises significant implications on Narti.

Double especially because the ships that shoot tethers at the paladins in the s7 trailer are a specific, recognizable party: both the opening that fires the grapple, and the tether itself, are obviously from the rotating-wing fighter ships used only by Lotor and the Generals.

Since the four surviving members of Team Sincline took the Sincline ships with them when they fled in s4e3, they left those ships behind on the cruiser. We haven’t seen them since- just like we haven’t seen the cruiser, implying it wasn’t retrieved.

This would imply that in order to get those fighters again, the generals would have had to return to the ship, finding Kova.

Kova, who has a decent chance of being a living phylactery for Narti, now that we know that’s possible.

So, okay, you might be saying, but what does this have to do with Pidge?

Well, I’ve already aired my theory the generals are going to be trying to steal the Lions and use them to enter the rift to retrieve Lotor. This would be emphasized if they’ve got Narti back- because Kova was specifically shown reacting with what looked like kitty concern to Zarkon declaring Lotor an enemy of the empire. If Narti’s in there, the implication is she’s worried about Lotor, even after he cut her down.

Pidge loves little cute animals. Her dog at home, the bunnies on the Green Lion’s planet, the fluffballs from the trash yard- she even adopted a few of them! She’d at least be likely to drop her guard around Kova.

And in s4e2, a repeated emphasis was placed that the Holts trust their minds, more than anything else- because as Matt smugly tells Pidge, you can hack a computer, but not a mind.

This always stuck out to me as a piece of dramatic irony... because before that episode, we’d seen Narti do just that.

Throk didn’t have the passwords for the Ulippa system base written down anywhere, or stored in a computer. He kept them in his mind. Narti used that. Because as Pidge’s counterpart, Narti is the specialist of Team Sincline when it comes to getting information- but she cracks brains the way Pidge cracks computers. And all she needs is a touch.

The paladins, of course... have no idea Narti can do that. During their allegiance, Lotor would have no reason to warn them about the powers of a woman who he personally knows died, and we don’t have much evidence he talked about the Generals at all.

It’s fair to assume if Narti escaped death by fleeing into Kova’s body, then she took her powers with her. So you have a cute, harmless looking cat, you have Pidge who is unlikely to look an unexpected friendly kitty in the mouth, and- just that easily you could have a paladin controlled. Which I think would be a much more effective shock because rather than “oh no a paladin’s being Tempted To The Dark Side” which they’re not really gonna get far on because these guys are basically tethered together to the waist by the Power of Friendship and there’s only so far you can toddle away from the group before you get bungee’d back, it’s “oh no our heroes are not as invincible as we’re comfortable believing they are and we have no idea how generous the responsible party is feeling.”

The Criminals Regret

Summary: No many people think criminals have any human feeling. After all, they are criminals, they are known to steal, murder and kidnap. But that is not for Catherine Robertson, a member of the most wanted gang in New Mexico, she has feelings, she didn’t choose the life she has, she is a criminal that regrets being one.

Catherine Robertson sat the cement concrete of the floor, listening to her leader babbling on about their next mission. She rolled her eyes, they have been told nonstop about this next mission. Her leader’s waffling wasn’t really noteworthy. Catherine lifted up her head and her gaze fell on her best friend, Sebastian Ricardo, a nimble-looking Hispanic man. Alexander’s gang became the most dangerous gang of all time.

One cause is, of course, when a social problem arises, and a particular demographic is systemically marginalised and oppressed. ‘Members of minority groups experiencing economic or cultural discrimination’, among other groups, are usually at high risk of cluster suicides [x]. 

Another cause is when the media spreads what is known as a suicide ‘contagion’.  According to studies launched by the Centre for Disease Control, a suicide ‘contagion’ is ‘a process by which exposure to the suicide or suicidal behaviour of one or more persons influences others to commit or attempt suicide’. This study lists out certain aspects of media coverage that can promote suicide contagion:

Engaging in repetitive, ongoing, or excessive reporting of suicide in the news

(The headline reads: ‘Boy, 18, kills himself inside sports centre’ [x])

MARGARET PATTERSON (tearfully as she reads from her statement): My husband was a happy man who lived life to the full. He loved his family and his work – and that he should have taken his own life in this way is a mystery and a shock to all who knew him. [x]

As seen above, some of the coverages done by the media at the beginning of ASiP is precisely what is named problematic in the CDC study. When this kind of underinformed/glorified/sensationalised coverage reach high risk groups, an imitation effect could easily occur, ending up with more suicides. And John Watson very easily could have been similarly affected.

John has been following the news of the serial suicides. Just the day before meeting Sherlock, he made a blog post about it:

John is in the high-risk group. He is suicidal to start with. He follows the coverage of the serial suicides enough to make a note of it on his blog, just ~48 hours before Sherlock invites him on a case. The media could very easily have had an unintentional but fatal influence on John.

Media’s blindness to social problems

When the media is obsessed with the sensational in serial suicides and oversimplify the reasons, they are also turning a blind eye to (the possibility of there being) a/the overarching cause. Or sometimes, they just do not think such a cause could exist:

LESTRADE: Well, they all took the same poison; um, they were all found in places they had no reason to be; none of them had shown any prior indication of ...

REPORTER 1 (interrupting): But you can’t have serial suicides.

LESTRADE: Well, apparently you can.

REPORTER 2: These three people: there’s nothing that links them?

LESTRADE: There’s no link been found yet, but we’re looking for it. There has to be one.

…

REPORTER 2: But if they’re suicides, what are you investigating?

LESTRADE: As I say, these ... these suicides are clearly linked. Um, it’s an ... it’s an unusual situation. We’ve got our best people investigating ... [x]

The reporters believe that these deaths are suicides, on the basis that they are not/cannot be linked. As I said in Part 1, the Cabbie’s victims do not die of suicide. They are technically murdered. When the reporters obsess over them being suicides and dismiss the possibility of linkages, they are turning away from the social problem that could be existing, the social problem that is pushing people to commit suicide one after the other. In the case of BBC Sherlock and A Study in Pink, we can read it as the media’s blindness to homophobic violence in the country, obsessing over only the visible effect—deaths by suicide, but ignorant of the causes. 

It also means a lot that Sherlock is the one who insists that these are not just linked suicides.

REPORTER 1 (interrupting): But you can’t have serial suicides.

LESTRADE: Well, apparently you can.

REPORTER 2: These three people: there’s nothing that links them?

LESTRADE: There’s no link been found yet, but we’re looking for it. There has to be one.

(Everybody’s mobile phone trills a text alert simultaneously. As they look at their phones, each message reads:

Sherlock is gay, and he is aware when ‘people who are different’ are being targeted, marginalised, and attacked, and he hates these oppressors:

MYCROFT: I’m glad you’ve given up on the Magnussen business.

SHERLOCK: Are you?

MYCROFT (stopping): I’m still curious, though. He’s hardly your usual kind of puzzle. Why do you ... hate him?

SHERLOCK (turning back to face him): Because he attacks people who are different and preys on their secrets. Why don’t you? [x]

As a member of the oppressed group, Sherlock is aware of the problem at hand, the problem that the hegemonic public, including mainstream media, are unaware of.

(This also puts Lestrade in the position of a mildly clueless straight ally. He believes that these are suicides, but there is also definitely a connection. Lestrade senses there is a larger problem at hand, but unlike Sherlock, he is unable to pinpoint what exactly is the problem.)

How does the Daily Mail, of all new outlets, recognise it as murder?

Ah, the Daily Mail. I am no expert in British media, but as far as I know, the Daily Mail is notorious for being unreliable, homophobic, xenophobic, and fearmongering. Their credibility is so bad that even Wikipedia banned Daily Mail as a source for the website. 

Let’s take another look at what the Daily Mail reporter actually said during the press conference: 

DONOVAN (to the reporters): One more question.

REPORTER 3: Is there any chance that these are murders, and if they are, is this the work of a serial killer?

LESTRADE: I ... I know that you like writing about these, but these do appear to be suicides. We know the difference. The, um, the poison was clearly self-administered.

REPORTER 3: Yes, but if they are murders, how do people keep themselves safe?

LESTRADE: Well, don’t commit suicide.

(The reporter looks at him in shock. Donovan covers her mouth and murmurs a warning.)

DONOVAN: “Daily Mail.”

(Lestrade grimaces and looks at the reporters again.)

LESTRADE: Obviously this is a frightening time for people, but all anyone has to do is exercise reasonable precautions. We are all as safe as we want to be. [x]

Yes, the Daily Mail reporter may insist that these are murders, but pay attention to their words: ‘the work of a serial killer’, ‘how do people keep themselves safe?’ The reporter is attempting to generate panic among the readers, convincing them that no one is safe. They are also eager to identify a lone, anti-social, alien, threat—a serial killer—and pin the blame on them. Even if they call these murders, the Daily Mail reporter is not identifying the nature of the problem, but going off on a tangent, creating a whole new smearing campaign.

The representation of news outlets in ASiP are also very much in line with what the show has been saying about the media—they lie, they manipulate, and generally horrible towards LGBT people. Kitty Riley in TRF, for instance, sneaks into a space not meant for her and claims she will ‘set things straight’ for Sherlock: 

KITTY: You and John Watson – just platonic? Can I put you down for a “no” there, as well?

(She stops him from opening the door and gets in his way, stepping well into his personal space. He breathes loudly and angrily.)

KITTY: There’s all sorts of gossip in the press about you. Sooner or later you’re gonna need someone on your side ...

(Reaching into her pocket, she holds up her business card and then tucks it into his breast pocket.)

KITTY: ... someone to set the record straight. [x]

And as Sherlock finds out, not only does Magnussen ‘attack people who are different’, he also has no qualms about lying in his news outlets:

MAGNUSSEN: Proof? What would I need proof for? I’m in news, you moron. I don’t have to prove it – I just have to print it.

(Sherlock’s gaze is lowered and his expression suggests that he is fully aware of how badly he has miscalculated.)

MAGNUSSEN (standing up and buttoning his jacket): Speaking of news, you’ll both be heavily featured tomorrow – trying to sell state secrets to me. [x]

We would not be strangers to these news stories. Just think of all the fake news, and all the entertainment news that insist on calling the relationship between John and Sherlock an ‘epic bromance’ (urgh).

Mop Dub

I had a pretty good weekend with  @dommestic, but we didn’t get to connect much until Monday.   We have routines - she has family to visit, I have rounds to make, and sometimes we don’t make the best use of our time.   But we did on Sunday night - we saw what I assume was the end of Showtime’s great experiment with subscription acquisition hijacked by an enthusiastic man with very white and very high hair, and Monday we got to do some more important personal activities.  In the bedroom.  In the bed.   (If you know what I mean.)

We had to make our rounds which involved food for us, food for our pets, and food for the furnace that is my endless curiosity about things related to my non-kink activities, but we had time in the afternoon to tackle something we didn’t get to do for a few days.  

Since we aren’t using the Nova Pro 100 as often as we used to, I’m having a hard time identifying if a setting is new or not.  There are little variations in the sounds, and during the opening salvo of beeps and bloops I often sit there trying to figure out if I can recognize any of it, including when we ran something Monday afternoon.  This is when her words get to me, because I might not have been listening too closely, and whatever anxiety I had is replaced by a sort of spaced-out feeling that can last quite a while.   I was told some brainwashing started, and since I didn’t notice it I assume it’s working.   There were more overt demands (kneeling, where my head or mouth may go, and so on) which generally just seems like a sensible thing to do.   Or so it seems, maybe that’s new, but probably not.

We also chatted briefly about Google Cardboard, the VR things that are going around (see @mind-fucked-megan and @kyle-is-kinky) which, at this point, we’re not sure quite how to exploit.  Do you embed videos into a Powerpoint?  Is there an app for that?   I’m not saying I need to be saran wrapped and put in a VR thing and maybe other things added to the mix... but you have to admit, it sounds like a good way to spend some time when it isn’t obscenely warm and/or humid.  Whatever it is we do, I tend to have a pretty good time and I hope we do some more before the next time I have to leave for a few days.

You can probably skip the part after the break.  It’s a bit of a bummer, so you can keep scrolling to the kitty pictures or the next series of horrors we as a people have inflicted upon ourselves.

You read this, but you don’t know me - I hope and pray, based on what can be discussed here.  I am not much of a participant but I do lurk in a few online communities, and a longtime member of a group I float around in and out of passed over the weekend.  I found this out after all the stuff I wrote about above.   They’re still logged in - I can see this person right now.  We weren’t close, and I was surprised to actually hear that someone was gone.  Normally online people just vanish.  Maybe they found religion, or their partner found them, or they just had a phase that ended, or maybe they found something better to do.  This was more of a lifelong interest for many of us, and the roster is small and very gradually shrinks.   It’s up to the ISP, or perhaps phone company, to turn this person’s last glimmer of life out - I can still see them.  I could send a message.  They are unlikely to hear it.   It’s really easy to lose touch and hear about things long after they took place, so I still consider myself fortunate to know now instead of in a month, or a year.

I did reach out to one of my best pals about something kind of dumb earlier on Monday, as this is how I generally start to connect with people and I should probably say hello to a few others this week.  It’s been a while.  It’s not the growing up or old part that gets to me quite so much as the gradual, almost imperceptible growing apart that happens to even the best of friends as you depart the education system for whatever comes next.

Hey, you made it this far.  I just heard about this 1970s/1980s post punk? new wave? group from Berlin called Neonbabies.  Here’s their cover of Jumpin’ Jack Flash, since we weren’t on the topic.  Look, if we’re going to talk about nuclear annihilation and conflicts inherent from incompatible systems of governing, let’s at least pull up some music out from the Cold War.

Idol: Jihyun (Former 4minute member).

Prompt: “You won’t leave, right? You’ll stay with me, right?” Jihyun tightened her grip over your hand. How could she leave your side? She was the only nurse you allowed to be around you without being harmed by you. Sometimes you forgot who she was, her name or where you were, but your body didn’t act by itself, full of unknown rage, if she was around you. As far as Jihyun knew, your visits stopped several months ago, making you one of the few that seemed to be forgotten there. And she didn’t have the heart to answer that she’ll leave soon the asylum to get married and work overseas.

Warnings: Swearing, violence and the character I made as the reader is a little twisted (obviously cause asylum) so be warned about that.

Darkness closed in on you. The silence in the ward was deafening; not a single sound was made.

You sat on the edge of your small bed and stared at the wall straight ahead of you.  The beige unpainted wall made your vision blurry after time.

A guard walked past to do her periodical checks. Making sure everyone was in their cells and still alive.

“Where’s nurse Jihyun?” you asked as the guard walked near your cell. She huffed and stood in front of your bars.

“Get to sleep.” she said without looking at you. I walked up close to the bars.

“Where is she?!” I raised my voice. I gripped tightly onto the bars trying to pry them apart. The guard rushed over to me.

“I told you to get to sleep.” She pointed her finger at you through the bars. Before she had time to react, you clenched your teeth around her finger, biting hard.

“You little bitch!” she screamed, pulling her arm away from your cell; blood dripping from her finger. “I am sick of you! You’re going to solitary.” She ran off to go grab more guards to move your from your cell.

“NO, PLEASE.” You quickly backed away into a corner. “I’LL BE GOOD, I SWEAR.” You shouted but it was no use, they had already begun to unlock your cell. “Please, please, please.” you begged them, tears flowing down your cheeks.

The female guard grabbed you roughly and held your arms out while the male guard slipped a straight jacket around you. They tied it all together and pushed you from your cell. Your body writhed around in the straight jacket, trying desperately to squirm free.

“I need to see my nurse. Please!” You continued to protest against them but it was no use. They dragged you to an empty padded cell and threw you in.

“You’ll see the nurse in the morning.” The male guard said locking your  cell. “Crazy bitch.” he said under his breath as he walked away.

You sat down on the floor, your back against one of the padded walls of the cell, and stared at the dull white light till the morning. This is what you did every time you came to solitary. You couldn’t fight and you could just about move, so you just sat there.

This was your own fault. Anyone that wasn’t nurse Jihyun you fought against. You almost killed nurse Yubin. That’s why all other nurses refused to go in your cell, they were afraid of you. All except Jihyun.

“Guard!” you shouted. The male guard sighed ‘what the fuck does she want now?’. He walked over to your cell and looked through the small barred window.

“What?” He asked clearly pissed off.

“I need my nurse.” you said pouting. “Where is she?” you asked as nicely as you could.

“Its 5:52am. She get’s in at 6am. You can see nurse Gayoon if you want.” You grimaced. 

“I don’t want that bitch near me. But I bet you do.” You said giggling. You had caught his attention. You enjoyed messing with the guards. Being in this hell 24/7 meant that you saw and heard everything.

“You like nurse Gayoon.” you said teasing him. Your mouth became a twisted smile.

“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” He said loosening his collar. 

“Oh I’ve seen you. You like to stare at her and talk to her...” You stood up and walked over to the door. “hmm and what about the pictures you take of her? You know when she’s not looking.” You could see the fear in his eyes.

You walked away from the cell door and around in circles.

“I...I...Don’t you dare tell anyone. Who am I kidding, no one would believe you. You’re fucking nuts.” He said scoffing. You walked back up to the cell door and leaned in close.

“I’d rather be nuts than a fucking pervert.” You chuckled at him and sat back down against the back wall. 

“Trust me, if I told my lovely nurse; she’d believe me.” You chuckled once again.

“What time is it?” You asked cheerily. He frantically looked at his watch.

“She’ll be here in a minute.”

A beautiful blue sky could be seen out of nurse Jihyun’s window. Unfortunately it was ruined by the ugly, tall wall that surrounded the asylum. 

“Why were you in solitary?” Jihyun asked, snapping you out of your daze. You looked back at her, she wasn’t angry but curious. 

“I bit a guard, she was being rude and she stuck her finger through my bars.” you said annoyed. “All I did was ask where you were.” 

You looked around her office. She kept a clean working space, with bright white walls and white tiled flooring; it was almost as if this office wasn’t in an asylum. Her solid wooden desk had a few small trinkets and a photo of her and her boyfriend. He seemed like a kind man, she had told you many things about him.

“This medication does not seem to be working. I’m seriously running out of options.” She tucked her hair behind her ears and looked down at your charts.

“Maybe I’m untreatable.” You looked back out of the window.

“I wish I could go outside. I...I can’t remember the last time I...” You trailed off. You didn’t even know how long you’d been in there.

“What’s the date today?” You asked looking back at Jihyun.

“3rd of June 2017.” she said gently, writing down notes on a piece of paper.

“That would make me... 26?” You asked her. She nodded, looking back up at you smiling.

“I’m surprised you can remember these things. Maybe some of this medication is working after all.” she said smiling at you.

“Lately I have remembered many things. But I don’t remember coming here or even why I am here.” you said getting frustrated.

“I’m not supposed to tell you what happened or why you’re here.” She said carefully. “But no one ever checks on you so I may as well. 5 years ago you were found in the mountains, covered in blood with no idea where you were. They brought you here and mentally assessed you finding that you were mentally unstable. It turns out that you had run away from home about three days prior to being found. They had no idea where the blood was from. Your family had been searching for you but had no idea how you got in the mountains.” she explained gently.

“Family?” you asked confused. You had forgotten about them, they hadn’t been in years. 

“They stopped visiting a while ago. They gave no reason, I’m sorry.”Jihyun said sincerely.

“You won’t leave me right? You wouldn’t leave me like they did, would you?” You asked searching for an answer in her eyes. You couldn’t find an answer so you hoped it meant she would never leave you.

The truth was Jihyun was leaving, she was getting married and leaving to work overseas. But she didn’t have the heart to leave you. In the asylum you may as well not exist, no one cared about you. 

There had to be something she could do.

Jihyun knocked firmly on the warden’s door. 

“Come in.” A deep, sour voice spoke. Jihyun pushed open the door and stepped into the bright office.

“Warden, I’ve come to discuss the future of one of my patients.” Jihyun spoke sternly. The warden looked up from his papers at Jihyun and gestured to a seat in front of his large oak desk.

“This is about Miss Y/F/N Y/L/N.” 

“Patient number Miss Nam, I don’t care to know their names.” The warden rubbed his forhead, running this place had really worn him down.

“Patient 02740.” She knew your number off by heart. The warden searched in his brain for what patient it was but he had no clue. He searched for you on his system, to see who you were.

“Ah I see. What about her future? I see she’s improving well, If we can get her to control her emotions she could be discharged. However according to her notes it’s very unlikely.” 

“I want her transferred.” He looked at Jihyun, removing his spectacle glasses.

“Why? And to where?” He asked confused.

“As you know I’m moving overseas... And umm... The treatment here isn’t working anymore, I figured maybe I can find her better treatment.” She wasn’t completely lying, she just didn’t want him to know it’s because she cared about you. Patients and Nurses aren’t supposed to form such strong bonds, but you wouldn’t let anyone else near you so what else could she do?

The warden squinted at her, wrinkle lines formed across his forehead. 

“I’ll think about it.”

“Guard!” You shouted. The female guard walked over to your cell.

“What time is it? Is it almost time for lunch?” You asked sweetly. The guard nodded. You smiled at her and continued reading your book. The guard started to walk away but came back to your cell.

“I don’t understand you. All the other patients, you can tell what’s wrong with them but you... I just can’t. Sometimes you’re nice, other times you’re murderous.” You looked up at the female guard and raised an eyebrow.

“I can’t help it. It’s just how I am.” You shrugged.

“And why do you only let nurse Jihyun near you?  Anyone else get’s abuse from you.”

“I like nurse Jihyun. She treats me like a real person, not a crazy person. She listens to me and doesn’t judge and she genuinely cares for what I have to say.” You explained.

“God I feel bad for your next nurse.” The guard said chuckling. You put down your book and walked over to the bars cautiously.

“Next nurse?” you asked confused.

“Nurse Jihyun is leaving. The next nurse covering you is called nurse Bora. She’s new I believe.” 

You felt panicked, nurse Jihyun promised she’d never leave. Rage and anger soared through your body.

You reached out between the bars and grabbed the guards uniform, pulling her close against the bars.

“NO NURSE JIHYUN IS NOT LEAVING.” You shouted pushing the guard out and pulling her hard against the bars. Skin on her forehead began to bruise. 

“GET OFF OF ME NOW.” The guard tried prying her uniform out of your grip but you were too strong. You pulled her in again, causing skin on her forehead to cut, blood began to dribble out of her wound.

“SOMEONE HELP ME!” The guard cried out for help. Guards came flooding into the hallway. You turned the guard around and wrapped your arm around her throat. 

“GET ME NURSE JIHYUN NOW OR I WILL CHOKE HER.” You screamed.

Jihyun pushed through the guards to your cell. 

“Y/N let her go now.” She tried calming you.

“YOU PROMISED YOU’D NEVER LEAVE. YOU LIED TO ME.” Tears streamed down your face.

“Listen, me and you can talk but only if you let her go.” You thought hard and decided to let her go. 

“Do you need the jacket nurse Nam?” one of the guards asked her. She shook her head and waited for them to unlock your cell.

She took you down to her office so she could explain everything.

Once again you found yourself staring out of Jihyun’s window at the sky. It was no longer blue like it was earlier, instead it was dark and muggy. Large gray clouds were swirling above the prison. 

“Are you leaving me?” You asked still looking out of the window.

“Yes I am.” Jihyun said sighing. You felt the lump in your throat tighten.

“You’re leaving me alone in this place. You’re the only person that cares about me.” You said still refusing to look at her.

For a few minutes you were both silent until you spoke up.

“Whenever I’m in your office and I look out this window I always want to throw myself out of it.” You said pointing at the window.

“Why haven’t you?” She asked curiously. “You’ve had plenty of opportunity to do it, there was no way I could stop you.”

“I didn’t do it because of you. I know you’d be upset and disappointed with me.” You looked her straight in the eyes. “You treat me more likely family than my actual family do. That shows how much you care.” You looked back out of the window.

“You’re right. I would be distraught. I truly do care about you, which is why I’m trying to get you transferred. I can’t make any promises that it will happen though.” She said gently.

You looked at her and studied her face.She was a beautiful woman; small plump lips, a long slender nose, deep dark eyes, wavy blonde coloured hair. You made sure to remember everything about her face in case you never see her again.

Over the past 5 years you’d taken a liking to Jihyun, not romantically but you just loved her and didn’t know why. It was almost as if she was a sister or a mother you never had.

The door to her office opened abruptly. 

“Sorry to interrupt Miss Nam. Would I be able to have a words with you outside please?” The warden said sternly, his voice thick and gravely. Jihyun smiled at you and left the office.

“I am afraid she cannot be transferred. There are multiple reasons as to why but let me give you my main reason. You are leaving to start a new life, so you need to move on from Miss Y/L/N. I know you care for her but I cannot allow this relationship to carry on.” The warden bowed and left Jihyun standing alone in the corridor. 

She walked back into her office and sat back down opposite you. She looked down to the ground; tears welling in her eyes. 

You had heard every word the warden had said. These walls were not sound proof.

“When you leave please don’t forget about me.” You looked out the window into the sky, the clouds were clearing revealing a dazzling yellow sun. 

Jihyun looked up and gripped onto your hand tightly. “Never.”
