I had no idea Sai was 16 until a couple months ago.

I had been going off of his dub voice which sounded MUCH younger and when I recontextualized him as 16 his shenanigans with Argo and Natasha threw me for a loop.

There's a lot to unpack here.

The fact that A: Allenby knew how Rain felt about Domon B: This caused her to feel a sense of kinship with Rain because she shared those same feelings towards him C: In her maddened state, she still managed reveal these feelings TO RAIN D: She's scared and literally asking Rain not to leave her alone E: The fact that she confesses her feelings about Domon TO RAIN FIRST

Idk where I'm going with this it was just a really good moment.

rotating a fic of some kind where Allenby and Domon have a light role swap but not in the traditional sense of they swap plot points entirely, instead Domon is the one forced by his country into his super mode that becomes progressively unstable as time goes on and Allenby can tap into her berserk mode whenever she wants but by learning to control her emotions she gains a better version of it.

This is mainly for the parallels I see between the two that were definitely intentional but I can’t lie after seeing Domon nearly go out on the islands against the devil gundam and Asia I WANT to see Domon fall into the darker side of his super mode a little LOL.

I've realized that the scene where Allenby is introduced is actually kind of interesting for my "Allenby is nonbinary" headcanon. We first see her with a helmet on, and when she takes it off, Rain seems to react with surprise about her being a girl. I'm not entirely sure if the intent was for this to be a "you though he was a boy, but she's a girl!" reveal for the audience as well, but it seems plausible.

(Of course, from the Rain/Allenby shipping perspective, it's also funny to imagine that this was Rain's lesbian awakening. "Oh, that boy is pretty cute... Wait, that's a girl? Girls can be cute?!")

I don't know, this just seems like it's saying the quiet (and dare I say under-done) part of Rain's anime characterization out loud.

Even before Allenby shows up she projects a lot of... weird motivations onto Domon (insinuating that he intended to creep on Gina during her examination in Neo Mexico after we see him covering her up with a blanket is one that stands out in my memory).

With the exception of the Seatte episode, which flips the script, she's also kind of weirdly possessive of Domon despite them not actually being together? She puts a lot of uncommunicated expectations on to him, and while it's normal to have a lot of relationship things go unsaid (instead implied by actions) in Japan, she knows Domon well enough to be aware that he's kind of socially oblivious, which means it really is on her to voice her expectations before getting mad about them not being met.

(Honestly I have some thoughts about how the communication theme is mishandled in relation to Rain as well (90s sexism), but that would be going off-topic)

I think Rain's jealousy issues are an intentional part of her character, even in the anime, and that this is something the manga writers picked up on.

It makes sense- it gives her that narrative parallel with her father's greatest flaw, which would also make the fact that she blames herself for her father's actions much more understandable if it had been sufficiently prominent; it would give the "my father's sins are my own" sentiment an undercurrent of "because I am just like him."

Given that Dr. Mikamura is the parent who raised Rain, it also makes a lot of in-universe sense for her to take after him in this way - she would have been exposed to his sentiments and how he processes his feelings, either explicitly or inferred from his behavior.

In that way, since we see Rain's jealousy issues crop up in the anime before we find out about Dr. Mikamura's betrayal, it even serves as foreshadowing for both the reveal and Rain's departure.

I see a lot of criticism of the manga for this choice, but I think it was absolutely a step in the right direction to make Rain's character flaws more explicit. I'd still argue she needed further development in both, given that her beliefs and emotions are critical to the ending, but the manga's attempt to bring this element of Rain's character more into view ultimately displays an understanding of her that is extraordinarily easy to miss, but important for her motivations.

While I know the manga made by Kōichi Tokita made Rain stupidly tsundere, it's kind of funny to watch in post, especially with the really OOC-styled expressions she gets here and there + little bits of more involved expressions~

The severe lack of Rain x Allenby content has left me shocked and disappointed with this fandom.

This show’s been out for thirty years. How the fuck was I only able to find ONE piece of fan art for them across like, 4 websites and it's from last year!

We're a yuri fandom now, I demand we do better.
