The More I've Looked Up On Irene Cara, The More She Reminds Me Of Michael Jackson:
I had already posted this on Reddit. But, I'll post it here too.
-Both Came From A Musical Family: Joseph had his own band, The Falcons, while Katherine wanted to be a country singer. Plus, on Katherine's side, Michael's related to Stevie Wonder. Then there's Irene's family; her father, Gaspar, was said to have brought merengue to the States thanks to being a saxophonist. Not only that but (according to Discogs: https://www.discogs.com/artist/6491165-Gaspar-Escalera ) he was also part of a record; Dioris Valladares's "Pa Bailar Na Ma". As for Irene's mother, Louise, she wanted to go into show business but her own parnets (Irene's grandparents) forbade it. Irene also had a brother who performed opera.
-Both Joseph And Gaspar Worked In Steel.
-Both families were of a struggling background.
-If Irene Really Was Born In 1959 (Her Birthday's Been Up For Debate Over The Years), She Would've Been 6 Months Younger Than Michael.
-They Were Child Prodigies: As small children, both Michael and Irene had showed their musical talents. Irene was able to play the piano by ear (like Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes did in her own childhood), went to classes for dancing and music. Meanwhile, Michael would show off his singing voice and join the Jackson 5 at around 5-6.
-The Wizard Of OZ: While Michael played The Scarecrow in "The Wiz" film adaption, Irene had played the role of Dorothy on the stage. Speaking of Diana Ross...
-The Supreme: As Michael was known for his relationship with Diana Ross, Irene had starred in "Sparkle", where the main musical group was loosley based off of The Supremes. Irene would also spoof the said trio in her "Girlfriends" video.
-A Connection To "Fame": While Irene's known as "Coco" from the original film, Michael's sister, Janet, was a part of the TV adaption, playing the character of Cleo.
-They Had Many Friends/Coworkers/Peers In Common: Andy Gibb, Stevie Wonder, Dom DeLuise, Sammy Davis Jr., James Earl Jones, Louis Armstrong, Donna Summer, Luther Vandross, Mr. T, Debbie Allen, DJ Bobo, Molly Meldrum, Laura Branigan, Tatum O'Neal and many more!
-We Are The World/Cantare, Cantaras: When, in 1985, Michael was doing "We Are The World" with Diana, Stevie Wonder, Cyndi Lauper and other known singers for charity, the performers of Latin America wanted in too. So, gathering at the very same studio as "We Are The World", A&M, they performed the song, "Cantare, Cantaras" ("I Will Sing, You Will Sing"). Jose Feliciano, Julio Iglesias, Cheech Marin, Menudo, Ricardo Montalban, Pimpinela, and Yuri were among the singers for this. Along with Irene, of course. Just to be clear, both songs were in 1985.
-Both Fell Victim To The Media: With Irene fighting for her royalties that her record company had withheld from her, she was ultimately blacklisted. Lies had spread saying she was a drug-addicted (while Irene did do cocaine brought upon by her proucers to help with her energy, she did kick the habit) diva who was difficult to work with. Then there's Michael who had the worst slander done to him. With all of this along with their respective court cases, both had seemed more tired, world-weary and arguably reclusive. That said, they still didn't lose their love for music.
-Shared Interests: Charity work, Old Hollywood/Old Movies, drawing, swimming, and song-writing. They also had interests directing their own films and writing stories.
-Shared Personalities: Shy, reserved, kind, down-to-earth, spiritual, silly, independent, creative, hard-working/(arguably) workaholic, private, stubborn and (in TVTrope terms) "adorkable".
-They Were Included In The 1985 Documentary, "That's Dancing".
-Both Were Nominees In The 1984 Grammy's.
-Were At The Top Of The 1983 Billboard Charts (Link: https://djrobblog.com/archives/17370 ).
-They Could Both Pull Off The Moonwalk!: Ok, with Michael, we all should be fully aware of his famous move. But Irene can pull it off too (and in heels!) as seen in her "Solid Gold" performance of "Breakdancing":
youtube
And in her performance at the '84 American Music Awards (attended also by Michael):
youtube
-As Mentioned By DJ Rob Blog: Michael Jackson’s death, June 25th, 2009, was on the 26th anniversary of “Flashdance” beating out “Thriller” on the Billboard Charts. Coincidently, Irene Cara’s own death, November 25th, 2022 was a week after “Thriller 40” album was released to the public.
-Snow White: It's no secret that Snow White was one of MJ's favorite characters. He even had her an the 7 Dwarves visit him back in the 80's:
youtube
Fast forward to 1989 where Filmation had made their (technically second) sequel to "Snow White" in the form of "Happily Ever After". There, Snow White was voiced by Irene.
That's all I can gather so far. Though, I want to added some disclaimers--
*I was going to include their ALLEGED eating disorders but I've left it out due to not being entirely sure if either of them had suffered from those ailments.*
*I was also going to bring up DJ Bobo's song "Man In The Mirror" (which, judging by the lyrics, seemed to have been about Michael). But I'm unsure if Irene was among the vocals. I could've sworn I heard her singing: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eEqMfk-xwks . *

LK 107: Green M&M Bois
(pt1)(pt2)(pt3)(pt4)(pt5)
Wait hold up. Y'all get jumped, bound, gagged, and kidnapped, you demand to speak with the manager, and as soon as you have the opportunity the first thing you ask about is real estate??? Sarah. Honey. You were briefed about this.
James you ADHD impulse-control-deficient ass, read the room.
You gotta correct him like a puppy.
She. Has. A. Point. Y'all.
"...are we the baddies?"
That doesn't... that doesn't make it better, bro.
Dude. Creepy.
Failed the sleight of hand check.
Buddy that is a 15/16 year old girl you're taking out all this frustration on. Do you feel like a big man now?
James quit being an ass, yes your sarcastically written notes will probably be very funny in hindsight but your friend is getting creeped on.
I... I really don't like LK Ethan Allen. This feels real smarmy, appealing to an impressionable teenager in order to sow division in this friend group of, and I repeat myself, teenagers.
"How are the Grants homes?"
"Oh them? Yeah. They're fine I guess."
oh now he protecc?
Sounds like someone is real into Sovereign Citizen rhetoric.
Kidnap and arson. The usual.
God I hate him. Can I punch him?
Fucking hell bro, this is some Neegan shit.
lookit the balls of steel on this girl omg. Don't fuck with a Phillips.
... well, no, you built the house for shelter, but go on, I guess.
Its unclear to me how that quite works, also are y'all gonna like, spray down the surrounding area to keep the housefire contained and not start a forest fire, or....
Look at this fanboy. James the hunky designer furniture in the shape of a man with undeniable charisma talking about political philosophy is a shithead please stop ogling him like that.
Ah now he's starting to see?
oh no. Impressionable teenage boy with misplaced anger gets swayed by charismatic tough guy. A tragedy as old as time :(
You are. Arguing with. A Teenager.
god I keep forgetting teenagers can be such assholes.
I'm just gonna hop in here and let y'all know that not only did this show introduce me to OTP with Sarah/James, it also introduced me to NOTP with Sarah/Arnold. If its your otp I'm not gonna yuck your yum but it rubs me VERY INCORRECTLY and I will have a visceral reaction every time anything borders on it.
That being said I can also see where themes can be spun from her having a misguided crush on who she would likely see as an older man that occupies a very specific niche of Proper, Organized, Effective Military Leader Of Men. Something something redcoat dad issues incarnate. I'm pretty sure that's the point of why the LK team chose to present it in this fashion and though its my NOTP, I can dig it from this perspective.
That being said James' crush on Ethan Allen mirrors her crush on Benedict Arnold. They both are crushing on terrible older men lol. Huh, I see what you did there, writers. I see you.

"Tis better to have loved and lost Than never to have loved at all." - Julius Caesar "My name is Ozymandias" - Ozymandias "It is possible to commit no mistakes and still lose. That is not a weakness. That is life." - Eminem “Steam rollers run shit over to make sure it's good. Like if they want to test a product, they'll run over it with a steam roller. How do you know the steam roller's good? Who ran over the steam roller?” - Emily Brontë These are some of my favorite historical and literary quotes. What are YOUR favorite quotes by great figures?
I can't think of many from famous people, though I do like the lines you picked. My favorites tend to be from obscure books or movies, which makes this an awkward question. But if I were to answer, I might say:
Only it is not clear that you need to travel to build a tower of Babel. Since we all now live in a tower of Babel, maybe we just did it ourselves.
(anonymous, from this book, which I thought was fascinating in high school and still do, but can't seem to find anywhere for free online. Anyhow, it consists mostly of unattributed excerpts from sci-fi/fantasy, in a single table of contents with no organization, so it's kind of like delving in a well of uncategorized randomness to see what you can find. The quote comes from "The Church on the Mount," from the anthology "Space Tales" by Allen M. Steele)

ELF
Buddy Returns in A Raucous Musical.

By Robert M Massimi. ( Broadway Bob).Published about 13 hours ago • 3 min read

Robert M. Massimi.
"Elf" at the Marquis Theatre is the best show on Broadway this season! Although the plot has varied a little from the movie, the laughs and thrills remain the same. What makes this show so great is the blend between the music, songs and the pace of the musical. "Elf" is never slow and the songs only enhance this raucous comedy. The musical entertains the adults and the children alike; it never favors one age group or the other.
Grey Henson as Buddy the elf has such a great presence on stage, his delivery and energy is very much a main attraction onstage; in fact, all of the characters in this two hour show are fantastic. This falls squarely on superb direction by Philip WM. McKinley and brilliant choreography by Liam Steel. The combination of the two keep the audience locked in tight throughout the evening, and makes the entire production fun to watch!
"Elf" is what a big musical should look like. With its massive staging (Tim Goodchild- he also did the costumes), great glam lighting by Patrick Woodroffe, resonating and booming sound by Gareth Owen/ Peter Fitzgerald and wonderful orchestration by Doug Besterman. Bob Martin for the most part did an excellent job with the book; Matthew Sklar's music and lyrics by Chad Beguelin complemented this behemoth musical.
The only problem with "Elf" was the projection at times. In the many backdrops of the production, the projection was out of focus leaving us to try to focus in on the different parts of the north pole as well as various parts of New York City. The story too had some different spins from the movie, sometimes the changes were engrossing, and sometimes they didn't work so well. Even with these mild flaws, "Elf" is a must see for children of all ages.
As Buddy goes through his blissful life like Will Ferrell did in the movie, Henson too spreads his goodwill on his fellow man. Realizing he is not an elf, but a human, he seeks out for his natural father (his mother died after he was born). His innocence makes even the hardest of New Yorker's soften their tone around him. From the comical store manager (Kalen Allen) to the no non-sense Mr. Greenway (Sean Astin), who owns Greenway publications, (Astin also plays Santa) they are all either put-off by Buddy at first sight, or they think he is mentally unfit. His father, Walter Hobbs (Michael Hayden) wants him out of his families life.
Whereas the movie focused more on Buddy and his half brother, the musical brought the many great actors here to the forefront. To me, this was brilliant because it opened the show up for more comedy options... the store manager, the hot dog vendor and the policemen. Henson had a great blend with all the characters, but I thought that he was at his best with Santa, his new found love, Tiara, the store manager, the saleswoman and the fake Santa.
Like "Music Man", "Back to The Future", "Elf" is a pleasant show, one that the audience can sit back and escape too. With the shows pleasant music, easy to watch dance moves and the great direction that went behind this show, it too will be one that you will remember for a very long time!
"Elf", Broadway, Tony Awards, Hollywood, Will Ferrell, Sean Astin, Grey Henson, Marquis Theatre, Alladin, Harry Potter, Hamilton, Hadestown, Wicked, The Great White Way, The Lion King, Once Upon A Mattress, A Funny Thing Happened on The Way To The Forum, Left On Tenth, The Roommate, Patti Lupone, The Oscars, James Caan.

Left on Tenth
During the show, "Left on Tenth" at the Jones Theatre, Delia (Julianna Margulies) tells the 4th wall audience that in her life "she takes two steps forward and one step back". Indeed her life seems this way. As a high strung, comical figure, Delia is a writer; her mother and father were writers too. Based on sister Ephron's memoir, "Left" is autobiographical. From the writers of "You've Got Mail" comes this warm, charming and heart- ripping new play that has many great things going for it!

Dear Peggy
Dear Peggy, I would’ve titled this story “Dear Mama” but I know Peggy annoys you more. From me to you I guess you’ll remember the season of Thanksgiving as one of the main events when I come by your house and eat up all your food, especially banana pudding, but as shocking as it may be, Thanksgiving is also the time when I reflect on how thankful I am to have you as a mother.

NINETEEN
He started up the car after his crying spell quit, put in the address of his apartment in the city and moved on. His spirit lifted as he got onto the highway and listened to something beside country; however he had learned to love country with Allen. He moved his tongue across his lips, a nervous habit of his and he tasted residue of the lemon meringue pie. He’d miss Miss Myrtle at the Crapaud Diner; there was so much to like about the Cajun Prairie.
He arrived home in record time. Lifting his suitcase from his truck he realized he was home; it was real, the lights of the city were not the dark nights of the Cajun prairie. Turning the key walking into his apartment felt eerily modern and antiseptic. Living in the city meant he was out a lot; staying home was not something he had practiced, and it felt strange. He missed the earthiness of the country and the textures of real materials used in homes versus stainless steel and granite.
Cal decided to head out for a drink at a local brew pub; it had always been a favorite place of his. It was crazy wild, music playing and lots of chatting going on with friends. He decided to get a place at the bar; sitting next to a nice looking guy.
“Hmmm, you never know if he’s gay, but might be fun to chat him up catching up on what’s happened in the city while I was in the country,” thought Cal.
Cal and the guy had a beer together and made small talk. The guy was nice and married, definitely not gay. He was having a beer before a business dinner. That’s translates as supper on Allen’s Cajun prairie.
Everywhere he went he thought of Allen. It was love, no denying the relationship had begun with a slow start as friends and then love had begun to develop and now it was stuck. Trying to tell himself he didn’t love the Cajun boy, but the city boy really cared for the Cajun boy.
After the guy moved on to his dinner business meeting, Cal thought, I”m miserable; I should head home and be miserable alone; it’s what I’m feeling here, very much alone. I miss my Cal, my Cajun guy.”
He opened his door and and headed to the liquor cabinet. He poured himself a glass of red wine. He’d missed his red wine, something Allen wouldn’t touch. He didn’t miss it when he was with Allen. But tonight he was feeling moody and an expensive glass of French wine was just the mood he was in. Classy, dry and warming. In a bit he would feel a buzz to take the sting off of missing Allen. Maybe he would dream of Allen tonight; that would be better than nothing. At least he’d see Allen through a dream.
That night he dreamed a beautiful dream of Allen and him swimming nakedly in the bayou behind Allen’s house. Allen had swum to him and hugged him sealed with a kiss. And Cal supported Allen in his arms while they soaked in the cool waters under the shade of an oak tree.
Afterwards the boys dried off, dressed and headed home through the fields. After a whiskey on the porch they retired to the coziness of Allen’s simply whitewashed
bedroom. They slept in each other’s arms spooning the night through.
The next morning Cal awoke with a slight headache. Wine did that to him sometimes. He awoke with a smile on his face; he’d dreamed of Allen, and it was real. And they spent the night in his favorite place, Allen’s simple bedroom with a background palette that was perfect for anything placed before it. It was meant for Allen and him, and he wouldn’t change a thing.
How he missed his Allen and wished he hadn’t fucked up, but his dishonesty had been the villain that only he could take responsibility for.
