Song Review(s): Metallica with Avi Vinocur - “It’s Killing Me” and “Borderline” (Live, Dec. 16, 2022)

Metallica plays covers, James Hetfield says, “because it’s fun.”

When a band is having a good time, it’s easy for listeners to do the same. And it’s particularly simple when Metallica performs UFO’s “It’s Killing Me” and Thin Lizzy’s “Borderline,” as it did at its Dec. 16 All Within My Hands benefit with Goodnight, Texas’ Avi Vinocur on acoustic guitar and backgrounds.

Hetfield, too, plays acoustic while his bandmates remain amped. And the result is two covers that sound neither like Metallica nor like the groups that originally cut the tracks.

It’s jarring how comfortable Metallica sounds in this setting with Hatfield actually singing - particularly on “It’s Killing Me” - and Kirk Hammett playing subtly through an amp turned down to what for him equates to minus-11.

Out on professional video, the videos are for people who respect - but don’t necessarily enjoy - Metallica and the music they usually make. And if age ever does start to mellow the members, it seems Metallica is in a position to switch gears with little difficulty.
