Produced by Farhan Akhtar along with Ritesh Sidhwani of Excel Entertainment, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara has been extensively shot at locations in Spain. So today in Why Did I Bother to Watch This, we have Yeh Kaale Kaale Ankhein, which for some reason I don’t understand I marathoned yesterday. Then again my insomnia has been flaring up and I haven’t slept much this week.
Anyway. It’s a Hindi thriller series on Netflix which follows a guy who becomes the obsession (kinda?) of the daughter of the local crime lord, and how his life spirals out of control.
It’s not good imo for a lot of reasons; the tone of the series is really uneven for one, jumping from trying to be tragic to trying for horror vibes, or even worse trying for comedy and tripping over the transitions. Plus as far as being a thriller, there’s not really any stakes. There is quite a bit of gore and violence, but it never really affects the characters we know. There’s several cheap fake-outs that really kills the tone. There are also no consequences for any of the main character’s actions and by the end the main tension comes from whether anything he does will have any consequences.
The characters are also muddled, with the biggest offender being Purva, the mob princess. She’s supposed to be this dangerous obsessed femme fatale, but most of the time she comes across as…well not reasonable, but kinda normal. You get the impression that if Vikrant, the main character, would just sack up and talk to her frankly, she probably wouldn’t be happy but she’d get over it. Which isn’t the impression you should get if all your marketing is based on how dangerous this character is supposed to be. The really dangerous characters are her brother and father, but it’s a danger that comes from stupid brutality. Vikrant is a dishwater character who just bumbles into the stupidest option for any scenario. Everyone else is varying levels of insufferable, over-acting their character’s one defining characteristic (over-wrought father, over-excited little sister, meek mother, stupid comic relief bestie etc.)
Perhaps unfairly, I suppose my expectations were set a bit high because of the works the series seems to draw inspiration from; yeh kaale kaale ankhein is from a song in Baazigar after all, where Shah Rukh Khan played a character who spirals into villainy due to his thirst for revenge - he’s manipulative, charming, and deeply terrifying by the end. I can feel the series trying to mold Vikrant’s character into something similar but unsuccessfully imo, even more so because they’ve invited comparisons to one of the most complex characters, and one of the best acted, in Bollywood cinema. And because they have me thinking of Shah Rukh Khan, I can’t help but think of Chaahat, where Shah Rukh Khan plays an innocent musician who becomes the object of obsession for Ramya Krishnan’s character, who - get this - is the sister of the local crime lord. And she is honestly terrifying in her role, as is Naseeruddin Shah as her brother. They are indulgent, broken, arrogant characters who are capable of anything. The stakes are high and the tone is tragic, because the movie had a focus and themes it wanted to portray. Nothing in this series has anything that comes close to these movies, which makes the series seem even worse by comparison.
To be honest I’m not sure who would enjoy this series, especially because the first season ends on a deeply stupid cliffhanger. Still, I watched all of it so I guess that counts for something? Maybe I was just waiting for something to happen in a weird sunk-cost sort of way. At the end, I should have cut my losses and watched something else.

3. Naseeruddin Shah and Vidya Balan

The Dirty Picture had three male leads. Yet, the on-screen couple that stole the spotlight with the brazen “Ooh, la, la” song was that of Vidya Balan and Naseeruddin Shah. Naseeruddin Shah was featured perfectly as the macho, egoistical veteran of the movie industry while Vidya Balan plays the starry-eyed novice item dancer who was sadly hired to amplify the heat-factor in movies at the time.
Loosely based on the life of Silk Smitha and other such actresses who were stuck to being typecast as item girls in various movies, The Dirty Picture, speaks of the exploitative nature of the film industry towards women. In one instance, the movie highlights the time-honored tradition of casting old male leads opposite young, novice actresses; while the actresses the same as the age of the hero is downgraded to the role of mothers or aunts.
Therefore, one can say that the significant age gap of 28 years between Shah and Vidya Balan was a plot necessity that worked to the advantage of the film while leaving the audience wanting more of this amazing on-screen couple. The duo has worked together before and also had successful on-screen chemistry in Vishal Bharadwaj’s Ishqiya.
4. Shahrukh Khan and Deepika Padukone

“Ankhon mein teri, ajab si, ajab si adayein hain” is what we hummed when all the media could focus on was Shahrukh’s newly gained six-pack abs. Who can forget the iconic scene of the die-hard fan (Shahrukh) fainting as the dream girl (Deepika) walks by in a fuschia colored ensemble?
Considering it was her debut into Bollywood, Deepika Padukone did a fantastic job of fulfilling not one but two different roles in the movie Om Shanti Om when casted opposite Shahrukh Khan. The duo with an age gap of 20 years was well-received by the audience. We hoped and received the winning combination of this duo in many movies over the years— Chennai Express, Happy New Year, and Billu.
5. Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

It was quite a stir when the release of Enthiran (Robot) was announced. Not only did the movie feature a futuristic theme, but it also featured the never seen on-screen duo of Rajinikanth and Aishwarya Rai.

The very best of the Showman
Subhash ghai has been one of the most commercially successful directors in the last quarter of the previous century.  From Meenakshi to Madhuri to Manisha to Mahima, he had a penchant for M for his leading ladies.Jackie Shroff, Anil Kapoor and Dilip Kumar have been the actors he collaborated the most with.
 Nine of his best films (since its is 72nd bday today) in my opinion:
9) Saudagar(1991): The film brought back two legends of Bollywood together after 30 years. It was a silver jubilee hit and gave the Nepali beauty Manisha, a perfect Bollywood platform. Ilu ilu and Imli ka boota were chartbusters for weeks. It was the showman’s take on Romeo and Juliet. It got ghai his only filmfare for direction.

8) Kalicharan(1976): After being rejected seven times by different producers, ghai’s script was liked by NN Sippy, despite him telling the producer that it has been rejected by lot of people. The rest, as they say, is history. It was such a blockbuster that it was made into all four South Indian languages.

7) Taal(1999): As a producer he introduced film insurance policy in bollywood first time with his film 'Taal' and first one to initiate banks to finance movies. Anil Kapoor, AkshayeKhanna, Aishwarya Rai, Amrish Puri, Alok Nath, AR Rahman, Anand Bakshi: with so many As, I believe this is the reason he called his film’ A Subhash ghai film’ instead of his earlier version Subhash ghai’s.
6) Karma(1986): Subhash Ghai made Karma at the time when Bollywood was going through one of its worst phase as business was hitting at low due to lack of content, low production value and video piracy. It was first movie where Dilip Kumar and Nutan worked together and only movie where Dilip Kumar and Naseeruddin Shah worked together. But it was Anupam Kher who stole the show in Karma as Dr. Dang, one of the most remembered villains of Bollywood. Anupam Kher achieved star status with Karma and critics praised him the way he acted in front of the legend like Dilip Kumar.Karma did not win any Filmfare Award because Filmfare Awards were not organized in that year.
5) Hero(1983): Its  another brave attempt of Subhash Ghai because in the era of action movies he made a love story with newcomers in his first production. Subhash Ghai used Pakistani folk singer Rehsma’s voice for the song ‘Lambi Judai’ and made a huge publicity of it on radio channels which also attracted the attention towards movie. Anuradha Paudawala also earned recognition for her song ‘Tu mera hero hai’ from Hero and was nominated first time for Best Female Playback Singer in Filmfare Awards. With Hero, Subhash Ghai got the status of ‘Showman’ for the way he launched the newcomers like Jackie Shroff and Meenakshi Shehshadri and made them stars.
4) Meri Jung(1985): Subhash Ghai directed courtroom drama Meri Jung for producer N. N. Sippy who produced Subhash Ghai’s directorial debut Kaalicharan. Meri Jung was the first hit of Anil Kapoor as a solo hero which also gave the confidence to other producers to sign him as a leading actor. Anil Kapoor once said in an interview that it was after the success of Meri Jung when he decided to settle down and proposed his girlfriend Sunita and got married.

 3) Karz(1980): Karz is one of the finest films of Subhash Ghai’s career as he took the risk of making a movie on the theme of reincarnation which was not a love story but a revenge drama inspired from Hollywood movie The Reincarnation of Peter Proud.  A semi- hit when first released, Karz is a movie considered ahead of its times by many. It, however , was once of the most inspired films for a generation of filmmakers altogether. It has been remade into all four South-Indian languages as well. The legendary duo Laxmikant-Pyarelal’s music is definitely one their top 5 albums and rightly won them the filmfare award despite having won consecutively for the previous 4 years. Simi as the vamp was nominated for the Fimlfare Award of Best Supporting Actress. Simi Garewal was reluctant to do the role of Kamini but she did that role after the persuasion of Subhash Ghai. Prem Nath needs a special mention  despite not having a single dialogue.
2) Ram Lakhan(1989): It  was a typical Subhash Ghai masala entertainer which has all the ingredients of a typical Bollywood entertainer like drama, emotion, romance, comedy and music. It was the first movie where Anupam Kher played a comic role and won Filmfare Award of Best Comic Actor alongwith Satish Kaushik. Rakhee gave power packed performance in a well written role and won Filmfare Award of Best Supporting Actress. Subhash ghai released an 8-page ad in Movie magazine before Ram Lakhan released.

1) Khal Nayak(1993): The popular pairing of Anil Kapoor and Jackie Shroff that featured in the director’s previous films, “Karma” and “Ram Lakhan” was abandoned and Ghai, instead, chose Sanjay Dutt to essay a role that normally would have been done by Anil Kapoor.  The audiences ran in their droves to witness some of the Madhuri Dixit screen magnetism. In every scene, she holds you captive with her stunning beauty, demanding screen presence, expressive acting and excellent dancing skills.The song "Choli ke Peeche Kya Hai" picturized on Madhuri Dixit in Subhash Ghai's Khalnayak' was a runaway hit, but as many as 41 political parties created a storm when they opposed the lyrics.

Every new year there are much-anticipated movies coming our way which already builds the excitement in the people and eventually lays down the foundation for the movie to be successful. There are numerous factors on which the success of the movie depends upon. The actor and actress in the leading role, the star cast of the movie, the plot of the movie are few of the several things which can determine the result of the movie at the box office. It was the year 2012 when Paresh Rawal along with Akshay Kumar and Mithun Chakraborty released this very underrated movie - Oh My God (OMG). It was a satirical comedy-drama movie and was the official remake of The Man Who Sued God. The movie was directed by Umesh Shukla and was produced by Ashvini Yardi. The credit for the songs of this movie goes to Himesh Reshammiya, Sachin-Jigar and Meet Bros Anjjan. The movie got a lot of love and appreciation from the people of the country. A movie based on religion, Omg featured a bit of comedy as well. Despite having no actress in its main lead role, Oh My God managed to back around 82 crores at the Bollywood box office.
 2) A Wednesday!
One of the best Indian thriller movies, A Wednesday was released in the year 2008. Written as well as directed by Neeraj Pandey, the movie features renowned veteran actors such as Naseeruddin Shah and Anupam Kher as well. Despite being made at a small budget, A Wednesday ended up being a sleeper hit at the box office but still ended up grossing over 340 million worldwide. Not involving much into the promotional activities the movie was a success, thanks to the critical acclaim. The movie was declared a hit by the Box Office India and was praised by the critics for its twisting and unpredictable ending as well as its highly effective storyline. Despite not featuring an actress in the lead role, the movie did well and managed to bag some awards as well.
 3) Dhamaal
Released in the year 2007, Dhamaal is one of the best Indian comedy movies and shall remain to be one for a long period of time. The amount of humor and comedy scenes in the movie is just too high. It is without any doubt, one fo the movies which one will enjoy no matter how many times they have already watched this movie. Dhamaal featured Sanjay Dutt, Ritesh Deshmukh, Arshad Warsi, Javed Jaffrey in its lead role. The movie earned a great number of positive reviews as well as responses and did pretty well at the box office as well. All this despite having no leading actress in its main role.

Mahanati (2018)
Directed by Nag Ashwin, Mahanati  is a film based on the life of actress Savitri, said to be the first female superstar of the Indian film industry.  Keerthy Suresh brought to life the title character, Dulquer Salmaan, who made his Telugu debut with the film played Gemini Ganesan, Samantha Akkineni  essayed the character of Madhuravani (BA Gold Medal), a journalist who is the narrator of sorts for the film, Bhanupriya, Vijay Devarakonda played Vijay Antony. The who’s who of the South industry were part of this prestigious project. Some of the cameos included that of Akkineni Naga Chaitanya who played his grandfather Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Mohan Babu played S. V. Ranga Rao, Prakash Raj played Aluri Chakrapani, Krish was K. V. Reddy, Srinivas Avasarala was L. V. Prasad, Sandeep Vanga was seen as Adurthi Subba Rao, Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam was Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and Sai Madhav Burra played Pingali Nagendra Rao. N. T. Rama Rao was brought to life using special effects and a body double. The film opened to rave reviews. Talking about her role in an interview, Keerthy reportedly said that it was a life lesson to play the role of a real-life character like that of legendary actress Savitri. She said after playing Savitri, she understood the importance of relations and friendships and added she would never make the mistakes Savitri made with her life and career.

The Dirty Picture (2011)
Directed by Milan Luthria, the film was reportedly based on the life of sex symbol Silk Smitha belonging to the South industry, who was known for her raunchy numbers. The film depicted her life from that of being an extra in the film to that of being one of the most sought after and popular actresses around. Vidya Balan was unconventionally cast against type as the central character and to the surprise of everyone wowed both the masses and the critics alike. The film opened to packed houses and Vidya also won the Filmfare Award for her powerhouse performance. Speaking about her role during the promotions of the film, Vidya had this to say, “I have never enjoyed being a woman more than I did while shooting for The Dirty Picture. I wasn’t uncomfortable doing bold scenes because I knew I was in trusted hands.”

My Week with Marilyn (2011)
My Week with Marilyn is a 2011 British drama film directed by Simon Curtis and written by Adrian Hodges. It stars Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Dominic Cooper, Julia Ormond, Emma Watson and Judi Dench. Based on two books by Colin Clark, it depicts the making of the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl, which starred Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier. The film focuses on the week in which Monroe spent time being escorted around London by Clark (Eddie Redmayne), after her husband, Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), had left the country. The film is based on Colin Clark’s The Prince, The Showgirl and Me and My Week with Marilyn; two diary accounts, which document his time on the set of the 1957 film. Monroe and Olivier, who is considered the most gifted Shakespearean actor of all time, didn’t reportedly get along during the shooting of the film in 1956. At that point of time, Monroe found a sympathetic ear in form of British writer and filmmaker Colin Clark. Kenneth Branagh played Olivier in the film. Celebrated actress Michelle Williams was lauded by the critics for her true to life depiction of Monroe and won an Oscar nomination for it. In an interview given at the time, she mentioned she was kind of apprehensive of the whole thing and spent around six months trying to talk herself out of it. “But, in the end, there was a kind of inevitability. The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004)
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers is a 2004 British/American film about the life of English comedy actor Peter Sellers, based on Roger Lewis’s book of the same name. It was directed by Stephen Hopkins and starred Geoffrey Rush as Sellers, Miriam Margolyes as his mother Peg Sellers, Emily Watson as his first wife Anne Howe, Charlize Theron as his second wife Britt Ekland, John Lithgow as Blake Edwards, Stephen Fry as Maurice Woodruff and Stanley Tucci as Stanley Kubrick. Though the film met with positive reviews, both Britt Ekland, Sellers’ second wife and Lord Snowdon, a close friend criticised it for different reasons, though both agreed that the Sellers they saw on screen wasn’t the Sellers they knew in real life. Film critics were more generous in their praise and Rush won the Emmy for his performance. Geoffrey Rush reportedly tried on 38 wigs and 40 voices to get his impression of the dark genius right. Parallels with his own life were drawn at the time but Rush refuted them saying his own life wasn’t as dark and troubled as Sellers’. It was a tough challenge for Rush to be Sellers as the script by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus had Sellers inhabiting the various characters who shape his life. It must have been tough both physically and mentally but Fry somehow overcame the difficulties and gave a wonderful performance. “Some people find the idea of the Sellers character playing various people in the film weird or disconcerting,” Rush said in an interview. “I always found it terrific.”

Iruvar (1997)
The film was loosely based on the life and times of MGR and Karunanidhi, though Mani Ratnam never officially commented on that. MGR was brought to life by Mohanlal in one of his most sublime performances while Prakash Raj gave his career’s best performance as the poet-politician Tamizhselvan and won a National Award for the same. Aishwarya Rai made her big screen debut through this film and played the dual role of Jayalalitha and Mohanlal’s wife.  Talking about the role in an interview with a daily, Mohanlal commented Iruvar offered him an entire lifespan of a character. He liked the role as it had a lot of variations. Prakash Raj, who was trying to make a mark outside of Kannada films, too said Iruvar helped him take the next big step in his career. The film is described by some to be the finest film directed by Mani Ratnam.

Chaplin (1992)
Chaplin is a 1992 British-American biographical comedy-drama film about the life of British comedian Charlie Chaplin. It was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Marisa Tomei, Dan Aykroyd, Penelope Ann Miller, and Kevin Kline. It also features Geraldine Chaplin in the role of her own paternal grandmother, Hannah Chaplin. The film was adapted by William Boyd, Bryan Forbes and William Goldman from the books My Autobiography by Chaplin and Chaplin: His Life and Art by film critic David Robinson. It was a role of a lifetime at the time for Downey, who is known today as Iron Man. He was a no-name actor with allegedly no professional training who reportedly aced the screen test in a field consisting of 30 known actors. Director Richard Attenborough described him thus at the time – “This little Brat Pack gadfly with virtually no discipline.” The film opened to mostly positive reviews and Downey was praised for his sensitive portrayal of the troubled genius that was Chaplin. He was nominated for the Oscars but like Chaplin himself, who never won an acting honour at the Academy Awards,  he too didn’t win. But he did win the BAFTA in the Best Actor category.

Bhumika (1977)
Bhumika is a 1977 film directed by Shyam Benegal. The film stars Smita Patil, Amol Palekar, Anant Nag, Naseeruddin Shah and Amrish Puri. The film is based on the memoir, Sangte Aika of the well-known Marathi stage and screen actress of the ’40s Hansa Wadkar, who led a flamboyant and unconventional life. The film won two National Film Awards — Smita Patil won the National Award for her power packed performance and it also won the Best Screenplay Award. It won the Filmfare Best Movie Award as well. It was invited to Carthage Film Festival 1978, as also to the Chicago Film Festival, where it was awarded the Golden Plaque in 1978. The story moves back and forth across flashbacks to the early life of Wadkar. Apart from the non-linear narrative, the film also employed the film within a film device. The film was lauded by the critics and Smita Patil’s performance continues to get praised. Some say it’s her career best performance. In an interview with Filmfare, this is what Shyam Benegal said about Smita’s role in Bhumika. “Initially, I had considered Shabana for Bhumika (1977) too but Smita’s body language and dialect seemed culturally apt for her Maharashtrian character. Bhumika, based on the life of Marathi actress Hansa Wadkar, required Smita’s visual presence from the beginning to the end…”

Dilip Kumar born on 11/12/1922 (By Sanjukta Sharma) An inspiration to some of India’s greatest actors, Dilip Kumar is unmatched in craft Grief swelled between his lines. The Dilip Kumar characters that occupy every fan’s mind are from the films he did from the late 1940s to 1960. Dilip in Andaz, Ashok in Babul, Vijay in Jogan, Shamu in Deedar, the eponymous Devdas, Devendra/Anand in Madhumati, Ganga in Gunga Jumna—they are self-conscious, egotistic and rebellious characters, but what sets them apart is an intricate self-pity. The great actor found his energy in this doomed combination; in their being wronged. Indians love sad stories. The sweet, sorrowful film song is sweeter after two pegs. There is veneration and solipsism in the way people say in casual conversation, “Dilip Kumar is the ultimate tragedy king.” A random search on Google Trends revealed Devdas’ angry alibi for dipsomania in Bimal Roy’s 1955 film—“Kaun kambakht hai jo bardaasht karne ke liye peetaa hai…”—was more searched (between 2005 and 2011) than Manmohan Singh. So Yusuf Khan from Peshawar (now in Pakistan), besides being one of our greatest actors, is perhaps also one of our drunk-surfing favourites. Statistics can’t prove that. Then there is the unquantifiable oeuvre spread over more than 60 films. That number is thin compared to most male superstars of Hindi cinema. Dilip Kumar chose to work less, and work immersively. After his films with Mehboob Khan in the 1940s (Andaz, Aan) and Bimal Roy in the 1950s (Devdas, Madhumati )—two directors who shaped a lot of what he was to mature into—Dilip Kumar progressively became involved in every aspect of film-making. “Nitin Bose, who directed Gunga Jumna, was a proxy director almost,” says Sanjit Narwekar, author of the book Dilip Kumar: The Last Emperor, which came out in 2002, the year the actor turned 80. For Gunga Jumna, Dilip Kumar himself cast a teenage boy to play the young Ganga. He rehearsed with the boy for months. For him, it was an exercise in acting. By sculpting the young Ganga, he made the character more convincing and detailed for himself. In later films, he would often ask directors to shoot his back to the camera because he wanted to test his voice as an emoting tool. Dilip Kumar’s films are free of the obsessive attention that the camera often gives to a star’s face making close-ups meaningless. Journalist Udaya Tara Nayar, who is writing Dilip Kumar’s autobiography with him—due to be released soon—recalls what she saw on the sets of Subhash Ghai’s Saudagar (1991)—one of Dilip Kumar’s last roles, a patchy phase beginning with Manoj Kumar’s Kranti (1981), when he came back to films after a six-year hiatus. Nayar says: “He has the habit of observing what is going on while a shot is being set up. So a shot was ready to be taken, Subhash Ghai called him to the set. Dilip saab said with the lighting that was set up, his moustache would not be visible.” Ashok Mehta, the cinematographer, retested, and lit up the shot differently to ensure it was visible. By the 1960s, Dilip Kumar was trapped in his own image—tragedy was in his veins. Around 1966, he frequently visited a psychiatrist in London who helped him overcome a short but intense bout of clinical depression. The doctor prescribed staying away from the melancholic roles. He took the advice seriously and forced a change of template. The buffoon in films like Gopi (1970) backfired—ill-chosen, slapdash and devoid of soul, some of these films were box-office whimpers. But during that period, another film won the fan back. Abdul Rashid Kardar’s Dil Diya Dard Liya (1966) is a petered down Wuthering Heights. As Shankar, he had to find Heathcliff’s dark beats in Naushad’s music and Shakil Badayuni’s lyrics (Koi sagar dil ko bahalata nahin ; Phir teri kahani yaad ayi ). Dizzy in love with Waheeda Rehman’s gorgeous Roopa, Dilip Kumar gave the battered lover’s role all the gravitas. Satyajit Ray had famously called Dilip Kumar “the ultimate method actor”. A few years older than Marlon Brando, who is considered the greatest method actor ever, Dilip Kumar’s obsession with over-rehearsed histrionics made him an idol for famous Indian actors who have followed the kind of dramatic pitch that they saw in Dilip Kumar. They are actors who have largely been arbiters of their own careers. Amitabh Bachchan, Naseeruddin Shah and Kamal Haasan talk profusely about imitating the Dilip Kumar of 1940s and 1950s—they have moved through some of their own best work, aware of Dilip Kumar’s record and potential. Acting was Ashok Kumar’s gift to him. After he took up a job at Bombay Talkies in 1940—for the money, as he has said in interviews—he watched Ashok Kumar on set every day. Devika Rani christened him in the early 1940s at her Bombay Talkies office, then in Pune, because then a Muslim name was anathema to producers. Ashok Kumar even gave him formal lessons on acting. In 1944, when Dilip Kumar’s first film Jwar Bhata, a musical romance, released, the critics were largely indifferent. In the late 1940s, Mela and Andaz swung his career around. Raj Kapoor was already on the rise and Dev Anand was to arrive two years later. The charismatic matinee idol in Hindi cinema was born at this time, as was the steely, sensitive and mindful Nehruvian hero. Lord Meghnad Desai overstretches this idea by deconstructing Dilip Kumar as the epitome of the Nehruvian man in his book Nehru’s Hero: Dilip Kumar in the Life of India (2004). Women loved Dilip Kumar. Up to his 30s, he was tall and wiry but he always looked older than his age—the ingrained seriousness shadowing his high forehead. Sometimes a clump of hair covered the forehead. The smile deepened his eyes. Rinki Roy, director Bimal Roy’s daughter, recalls with glee: “We lived in the same area in Bombay and every time we saw his car pass by, a blue Impala, we would swoon. I remember the car number; 2424.” Dilip Kumar’s love affairs with Kamini Kaushal and later Madhubala were long, much publicized and heartbreaking. In his early 40s, he married actor Saira Banu, 20 years younger than him. His early life was fairly humdrum. Soon after he graduated from college, the fortunes of his family of fruit merchants in Mumbai’s Crawford Market ebbed. Yusuf had to quickly find a job. The 17-year-old set up a sandwich stall in Pune’s Wellingdon Club, a British army club. A passionate cook already (film journalists of that era say that while Dev Anand picked on one roti and a bowl of salad for a meal, Dilip Kumar’s sets had a wide spread, usually his favourite Awadhi style of kebabs and biryani, for everyone), Yusuf learnt how to make sandwiches the English way. The stall became popular. A group of ladies who used to visit the stall would fondly call him “chico”, a “lad” in Spanish. Saira Banu often still calls him “chico”. Pakistan made Dilip Kumar their own—it’s a country he has never lost despite having shifted from there when he was a young boy. But Mumbai remains his home. Through the 1980s, he faced unfair public scrutiny from the Hindu right. A friend of the Congress party and a former nominated member of the Rajya Sabha, he was never in electoral politics. His secularism, questioned on many occasions, is in the broadest sense of the word—a philanthropist, he has fought against the censorship establishment, and for freedom and human dignity. In Gunga Jumna, the censors wanted the last words of his character, “Hey Ram”, cut—how could Dilip Kumar, a Muslim, use the same last words as Mahatma Gandhi, even if it was only on screen? In the 1980s, he was accused of being a Pakistani spy based on some bizarre grounds. He was the target of the late Shiv Sena leader Bal Thackeray’s ire when Pakistan bestowed its highest honour, the Nishaan-e-Imtiaz, on him. By then, he was in his 70s, and unwilling to fight. Now, on rare occasions, the 90-year-old actor appears in commemorative photo shoots or visits celebrity parties with Saira Banu by his side. Most of the time, says Nayar based on her close interactions with him, he loves watching sports on TV or reading newspapers and books. His blog is a casual chronicle of the people who visit him, or friends he has lost over the years. “When it comes to films, Dilip saab does not miss a Rajkumar Hirani film even if it is on TV,” Nayar says. His clipped, halting manner of speech, in proficient Hindi, Urdu or English, gives away much of him. He has chosen his passions mindfully, and chiselled them to exemplary standards.

I’ll be honest that I’ve been dreading OK Jaanu because I love OK Kanmani so very much.  I went to an A. R. Rahman concert in Chicago and I heard the song Mental Manadhil for the first time, and I was completely blown away.  Rahman played this video while he sang the song, and I just had to see this movie.
OK Kanmani is a Mani Ratnam Tamil movie about two young people who are working in Mumbai, and thrilled to find another Tamil speaker.  I didn’t know at the time that Dulquer Salmaan is actually from Kerala and known for his Malayalam films.
So Adorable!
I’ve become like all those people in South India — the Southern original is so much better!  There is an undeniable magic to the Mani Ratnam original.  The chemistry between Dulquer Salmaan and Nithya Menen is amazing.  And it’s one of my all time favorite A. R. Rahman soundtracks.  I listen to it all the time.  O Khadal Kanmani is the movie that started me on my journey of watching Malayalam films, because I just had to see what other films Dulquer and Nithya had done, which led me to Bangalore Days and on and on.  It all started with OK Kanmani, which I have watched multiple times.
So, I had trepidation about OK Jaanu.  I like Aditya Roy Kapur okay, and Shraddha Kapoor.  I saw Aashiqui 2, and they do have decent chemistry together.  Then the Humma song came out, and I got excited.  The song from this scene in the original movie is cute, but one of the weakest of the Tamil soundtrack.  This is waaay sexier.
Then, something happened a week ago.  My father became very seriously ill and he has been in ICU at the hospital for this entire past week.  It’s been incredibly stressful, but he seems to have come out of the crisis.  I’ve been exhausted and spending all my time at hospital with my parents.  When I’ve had a moment to wind down, I’ve turned to Bollywood song videos as my sort of comfort food.  And tonight, I decided I deserved a break, and went with a neighbor to OK Jaanu.  It was just what the doctor ordered.  It took me away from all my cares and worries for a few hours.
I think this is the best movie I have seen Aditya Roy Kapoor do.  He was truly adorable.  Because I know Dulquer’s performance in the original so well, I could tell when he was even trying to match Dulquer’s mannerisms, but he made it his own.  Shraddha is no Nithya but she was good enough.   Aditya was good in Aashiqui 2 and, not horrible in Fitoor (that movie had other problems), but I like him so much better quirky and cute like this than brooding and angry.  I’m also one of the few people who liked most of Daawat-e-Ishq.  (Not Aditya’s best look, but I still love this title song!)
The plot of OK Jaanu is basically identical to the original.  Adi (Aditya Roy Kapur) is a young video game designer who has just arrived in Mumbai, and is staying in a room of the house of his brother’s former boss (Nasureedin Shah).  Nasureedin’s wife has Althzeimer’s.  Adi meets Tara and a torrid romance begins, but they both vow they never want to marry.  He’s determined to move to the US, and she wants to study architecture in Paris.  They convince Adi’s landlord to let them live in sin together in his room.  All comes to a head when they both have to leave to follow their careers — will they choose love or their career?
Some of what made the original special is lost in the Hindi translation.  Part of what drew Adi and Tara together was that they were two Tamil speakers alone in the big city of Mumbai.  That plot point is gone. Naseeruddin Shah is of course his excellent self, but I so adored the big hulking Prakash Raj, who so often plays the big villain, being the tender devoted husband to his ailing wife in the Tamil OK Kanmani.  The sets are certainly bigger and more expensive looking.
One thing that is a welcome addition are the new songs.  Enna Sona, sung by Arjit Singh is gorgeous, and the film turns black and white during this sequence as Adi is missing Tara while she’s away on a work trip.
My neighbor thought OK Jaanu was better than the original.  But she doesn’t really speak Tamil (her husband does) and watched it without subtitles.  She said Dulquer Salmaan’s accent was so thick she couldn’t understand him.  The original will remain one of my favorite films, and if you live in the US, I urge you to watch it on Netflix.   But, the Hindi remake is quite enjoyable.  It’s partly my frame of mind with all I’ve been going through but, this movie allowed me to forget my worries for a few hours.   Thank God for Indian Cinema and that it is there whenever I need it.  I told my husband what a comfort it is to me in times like this.  I think I’m being more generous than some other reviewers may be, so sue me.  It’s no hardship to watch Adiya being this adorable for a couple hours!

Mahanati (2018)
Directed by Nag Ashwin, Mahanati  is a film based on the life of actress Savitri, said to be the first female superstar of the Indian film industry.  Keerthy Suresh brought to life the title character, Dulquer Salmaan, who made his Telugu debut with the film played Gemini Ganesan, Samantha Akkineni  essayed the character of Madhuravani (BA Gold Medal), a journalist who is the narrator of sorts for the film, Bhanupriya, Vijay Devarakonda played Vijay Antony. The who’s who of the South industry were part of this prestigious project. Some of the cameos included that of Akkineni Naga Chaitanya who played his grandfather Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Mohan Babu played S. V. Ranga Rao, Prakash Raj played Aluri Chakrapani, Krish was K. V. Reddy, Srinivas Avasarala was L. V. Prasad, Sandeep Vanga was seen as Adurthi Subba Rao, Tharun Bhascker Dhaassyam was Singeetham Srinivasa Rao and Sai Madhav Burra played Pingali Nagendra Rao. N. T. Rama Rao was brought to life using special effects and a body double. The film opened to rave reviews. Talking about her role in an interview, Keerthy reportedly said that it was a life lesson to play the role of a real-life character like that of legendary actress Savitri. She said after playing Savitri, she understood the importance of relations and friendships and added she would never make the mistakes Savitri made with her life and career.

The Dirty Picture (2011)
Directed by Milan Luthria, the film was reportedly based on the life of sex symbol Silk Smitha belonging to the South industry, who was known for her raunchy numbers. The film depicted her life from that of being an extra in the film to that of being one of the most sought after and popular actresses around. Vidya Balan was unconventionally cast against type as the central character and to the surprise of everyone wowed both the masses and the critics alike. The film opened to packed houses and Vidya also won the Filmfare Award for her powerhouse performance. Speaking about her role during the promotions of the film, Vidya had this to say, “I have never enjoyed being a woman more than I did while shooting for The Dirty Picture. I wasn’t uncomfortable doing bold scenes because I knew I was in trusted hands.”

My Week with Marilyn (2011)
My Week with Marilyn is a 2011 British drama film directed by Simon Curtis and written by Adrian Hodges. It stars Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Dominic Cooper, Julia Ormond, Emma Watson and Judi Dench. Based on two books by Colin Clark, it depicts the making of the 1957 film The Prince and the Showgirl, which starred Marilyn Monroe and Laurence Olivier. The film focuses on the week in which Monroe spent time being escorted around London by Clark (Eddie Redmayne), after her husband, Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott), had left the country. The film is based on Colin Clark’s The Prince, The Showgirl and Me and My Week with Marilyn; two diary accounts, which document his time on the set of the 1957 film. Monroe and Olivier, who is considered the most gifted Shakespearean actor of all time, didn’t reportedly get along during the shooting of the film in 1956. At that point of time, Monroe found a sympathetic ear in form of British writer and filmmaker Colin Clark. Kenneth Branagh played Olivier in the film. Celebrated actress Michelle Williams was lauded by the critics for her true to life depiction of Monroe and won an Oscar nomination for it. In an interview given at the time, she mentioned she was kind of apprehensive of the whole thing and spent around six months trying to talk herself out of it. “But, in the end, there was a kind of inevitability. It was the kind of part I was born to challenge myself with…”

The Life and Death of Peter Sellers (2004)
The Life and Death of Peter Sellers is a 2004 British/American film about the life of English comedy actor Peter Sellers, based on Roger Lewis’s book of the same name. It was directed by Stephen Hopkins and starred Geoffrey Rush as Sellers, Miriam Margolyes as his mother Peg Sellers, Emily Watson as his first wife Anne Howe, Charlize Theron as his second wife Britt Ekland, John Lithgow as Blake Edwards, Stephen Fry as Maurice Woodruff and Stanley Tucci as Stanley Kubrick. Though the film met with positive reviews, both Britt Ekland, Sellers’ second wife and Lord Snowdon, a close friend criticised it for different reasons, though both agreed that the Sellers they saw on screen wasn’t the Sellers they knew in real life. Film critics were more generous in their praise and Rush won the Emmy for his performance. Geoffrey Rush reportedly tried on 38 wigs and 40 voices to get his impression of the dark genius right. Parallels with his own life were drawn at the time but Rush refuted them saying his own life wasn’t as dark and troubled as Sellers’. It was a tough challenge for Rush to be Sellers as the script by Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus had Sellers inhabiting the various characters who shape his life. It must have been tough both physically and mentally but Fry somehow overcame the difficulties and gave a wonderful performance. “Some people find the idea of the Sellers character playing various people in the film weird or disconcerting,” Rush said in an interview. “I always found it terrific.”

Iruvar (1997)
The film was loosely based on the life and times of MGR and Karunanidhi, though Mani Ratnam never officially commented on that. MGR was brought to life by Mohanlal in one of his most sublime performances while Prakash Raj gave his career’s best performance as the poet-politician Tamizhselvan and won a National Award for the same. Aishwarya Rai made her big screen debut through this film and played the dual role of Jayalalitha and Mohanlal’s wife.  Talking about the role in an interview with a daily, Mohanlal commented Iruvar offered him an entire lifespan of a character. He liked the role as it had a lot of variations. Prakash Raj, who was trying to make a mark outside of Kannada films, too said Iruvar helped him take the next big step in his career. The film is described by some to be the finest film directed by Mani Ratnam.

Chaplin (1992)
Chaplin is a 1992 British-American biographical comedy-drama film about the life of British comedian Charlie Chaplin. It was produced and directed by Richard Attenborough and stars Robert Downey, Jr., Marisa Tomei, Dan Aykroyd, Penelope Ann Miller, and Kevin Kline. It also features Geraldine Chaplin in the role of her own paternal grandmother, Hannah Chaplin. The film was adapted by William Boyd, Bryan Forbes and William Goldman from the books My Autobiography by Chaplin and Chaplin: His Life and Art by film critic David Robinson. It was a role of a lifetime at the time for Downey, who is known today as Iron Man. He was a no-name actor with allegedly no professional training who reportedly aced the screen test in a field consisting of 30 known actors. Director Richard Attenborough described him thus at the time – “This little Brat Pack gadfly with virtually no discipline.” The film opened to mostly positive reviews and Downey was praised for his sensitive portrayal of the troubled genius that was Chaplin. He was nominated for the Oscars but like Chaplin himself, who never won an acting honour at the Academy Awards,  he too didn’t win. But he did win the BAFTA in the Best Actor category.

Bhumika (1977)
Bhumika is a 1977 film directed by Shyam Benegal. The film stars Smita Patil, Amol Palekar, Anant Nag, Naseeruddin Shah and Amrish Puri. The film is based on the memoir, Sangte Aika of the well-known Marathi stage and screen actress of the ’40s Hansa Wadkar, who led a flamboyant and unconventional life. The film won two National Film Awards — Smita Patil won the National Award for her power packed performance and it also won the Best Screenplay Award. It won the Filmfare Best Movie Award as well. It was invited to Carthage Film Festival 1978, as also to the Chicago Film Festival, where it was awarded the Golden Plaque in 1978. The story moves back and forth across flashbacks to the early life of Wadkar. Apart from the non-linear narrative, the film also employed the film within a film device. The film was lauded by the critics and Smita Patil’s performance continues to get praised. Some say it’s her career best performance. In an interview with Filmfare, this is what Shyam Benegal said about Smita’s role in Bhumika. “Initially, I had considered Shabana for Bhumika (1977) too but Smita’s body language and dialect seemed culturally apt for her Maharashtrian character. Bhumika, based on the life of Marathi actress Hansa Wadkar, required Smita’s visual presence from the beginning to the end…”

She may have wedded the superstar of the ’70s, Rajesh Khanna. But Dimple Kapadia’s life has been no less phenomenal. Married to both the arc-lights and a megastar in the same year she chose to give up one for the other. But Dimple Khanna soon grew up to some sinister home truths. She yearned for the view outside… never mind if it meant walking down alien alleys. From there began her tryst with herself – as an actor, as a woman. A bunch of formula films later, she broke into the parallel orbit and asserted her credibility as an actor. Aitbaar, Kaash, Lekin, Rudaali, Krantiveer, Angaar, Luck By Chance, Being Cyrus, Finding Fanny… Dimple’s rise as an actor has coincided with her growth as a person. While Mrinal Sen compared her to Sophia Loren and described her face as ‘a landscape of desolation’, Feroz Khan called her a woman ‘who’s just dying to be herself on screen’. Like her character Shanichari in Rudaali, a professional mourner who draws from the torment of her soul, Dimple’s performances resonated the angst within.
Love and loss have been her close allies. Be it the death of relationships or the demise of her loved ones, she’s survived it all.  That year – 1973!
Amidst a line-up of a hundred young girls, Raj Kapoor singled out the older daughter of Gujarati entrepreneur Chunilal Kapadia and Betty to be launched opposite his son Rishi Kapoor in Bobby (1973). In fact, her introduction scene in the film was inspired from Raj’s first meeting with muse Nargis decades ago… where an unsuspecting Nargis had opened the door to Raj… running her flour smeared hands through her hair!
But before Bobby could win over the audiences, superstar Rajesh Khanna wooed a 15-year-old Dimple to be his child bride in March ’73. While this unexpected twist left his thousand female fans shattered – some even committed suicide – it was a fairytale wedding for Dimple. For someone, who often strolled past the superstar’s sea-facing bungalow Aashirwad in Bandra to someday walk in as the empress of his castle was a surreal moment.  “I came to know him precisely seven days before the marriage. We were together in a flight to Ahmedabad for a show. He sat next to me but did not utter a word. Just as the flight was about to land, he turned towards me, looked hard into my eyes and said he wanted me to marry him,” Dimple once recalled the whirlwind romance. She was 16 to his 31.
 Blockbuster Bobby
Six months after her marriage, released RK’s love tale Bobby. “Mujhse dosti karoge?” asks Bobby Braganza in the iconic scene. A cleft on her cherubic face, sherry eyes, a natural naiveté and loads of untouched sexiness… Dimple became a teen icon. She helmed the Bobby cult – the dotted and knotted Bobby blouse and the earphone-hairstyle, the Bobby clips, Bobby sandals… were feverishly followed. She won the Filmfare Award for Best Actress (along with Jaya Bhaduri for Abhimaan). But that was the magnificent anti-climax of her nipped-in-the-bud career. The mehndi on her hands, visible in the last portions of Bobby, was a grim reminder that she was now Kaka’s possession. 
The rocky marriage
One can never fathom the reasons behind Rajesh’s impulsive decision to marry Dimple. Some dubbed it as ‘attention seeking’, some called it an ‘ego boost’ for the superstar, who wanted to spite his ex-ladylove, actor/model Anju Mahendroo. But sadly, by the end of 1974 when their first daughter Twinkle Khanna was born (she shares the same birthdate, December 29, with her late father) the cracks in the marriage were evident. Rajesh’s slipping stardom and his alleged alcoholism and abusive ways left his adolescent wife traumatised. Still in her early 20s, in 1982, Dimple, reportedly, moved into her parents’ home with daughters, Twinkle and Rinkie, aged eight and five then. She began working with Ramesh Sippy for her comeback film Saagar. “Right from the beginning of my marriage I knew it wouldn’t work out. My biggest failing is I don’t take a stand. I let people stomp all over me. Finally, when I do put my foot down, it’s too late,” she had told Filmfare in July 1983.

The eventuful ‘80s
Though Saagar was to be her comeback, Dasari Narayana Rao’s Zakhmi Sher (1984), opposite Jeetendra released first. Saagar premiered in August 1985 and was controversial for the scene where she was seen topless for a split second. Her easy performance as Mona D’Silva, torn between her friend (Kamal Haasan) and beloved (Rishi Kapoor), won her the Filmfare Best Actress Award. “Certainly, marriage brings security… I was Mrs Rajesh Khanna. It takes guts to leave all that. But now that I’m earning and fending for myself, I feel more secure. There’s a hell of a difference in spending your time playing cards and acting,” she said to Filmfare in October 1984.

Mukul Anand’s Aitbaar (1985), a Hitchcockian thriller (apparently based on Dial M For Murder) with Suresh Oberoi and Raj Babbar, had her play the beautiful wife of a sadistic husband. The film had soulful music by Bappi Lahiri. The songs Kisi nazar ko tera intezar aaj bhi hai and Awaaz di hai have great recall value.

Rahul Rawail’s actioner Arjun with Sunny Deol added to her reliability just as it sparked off rumours of a liaison between the lead pair. Feroz Khan’s stylised Janbaaz (1986) presented her in a sexy and glamorous avatar and is still remembered for her steamy lovemaking scene with Anil Kapoor in the barn. Dimple’s moment of epiphany came with Mahesh Bhatt’s Kaash (1987). The narrative that dealt with the decline of a superstar (Jackie Shroff) had perhaps a familiar echo for the actress, who was also evolving as a person. Her act of a disillusioned wife and a distraught mother had flashes of brilliance. In fact, Bhatt was then quoted saying, “I couldn’t differentiate between Dimple and Pooja her character… She has gone through so much in her life that… she only has to be herself.” Dimple and Jackie shared a great chemistry as their bond traversed through love, conflict, abuse and estrangement… only to come anew.
The dramatic, though coarse, Zakhmi Aurat (1988) had her play a police officer, who gets gang-raped. After the judicial system fails her, she joins forces with other rape victims to castrate the rapists. The film was a bold statement, hitherto unseen in our films. Another notable film was Mukul Anand’s Insaaf (1987). Her pairing with Vinod Khanna was a beauty meets brawn encounter with the song Sulagti hai aankhen… celebrating it to the hilt. Subhash Ghai’s Ram Lakhan (1989) was another commercial success in her diary.

The offbeat ’90s
“When I do glamorous roles, people say I look haggard. Why can’t directors conceive me in a realistic set-up? Why can’t directors like Mahesh Bhatt and Shyam Benegal sign me?” asked Dimple in a Filmfare interview in September 1985. And the ’90s threw open the floodgates of arthouse cinema for her. Govind Nihalani’s Drishti (1990) had Shekhar Kapur and her as a married urban couple, trying to find meaning in a dithering marriage.
Based on Rabindranath Tagore’s short story, Gulzar’s Lekin (1990), set in Rajasthan, revolved around Vinod Khanna who’s entranced by Reva (Dimple), a spirit. Apparently, to make her character truthful, director Gulzar asked her to refrain from blinking and give a ‘fixed gaze’ for a surreal effect. Another milestone was Kalpana Lajmi’s Rudaali (1993). Also set in Rajasthan, the film was based on Mahasweta Devi’s story about professional mourners. Dimple played Shanichari, a woman who has never cried despite a sad life but is compelled to weep for a living. It won her the National Award. “I was proud; I’d proved that an actress from mainstream cinema could win an award,” she told Filmfare in October 1993.
Mrinal Sen’s 1995 Bengali drama Antareen had her play a woman in a loveless marriage. In Mehul Kumar’s Krantiveer (opposite Nana Patekar), she played a journalist, who becomes a rape victim and received her fourth Filmfare Award as the Best Supporting Actress. Other notable films were Shashilal K Nair’s Angaar (1992), where she played an orphan and Priyadarshan’s Gardish (1993), where she played a prostitute.
The magical millennium
Not averse to playing her age, the 2000s had her dabble with an array of characters. They include Farhan Akhtar’s directorial debut Dil Chahta Hai (2001), where she played Tara Jaiswal, a middle-aged alcoholic divorcee. Her amorphous relationship with much younger artist Siddharth (Khanna) here was a poignant portrayal. Leela (20012), directed by Somnath Sen and co-starring Vinod Khanna, followed her unconventional relationship with a student. The year 2005 saw her unite with Rishi Kapoor in Pyaar Mein Twist. They played two middle-aged single parents, who fall in love. Her part of ex-superstar Neena Walia in Luck by Chance (2009), referred to in the film as ‘a crocodile in a chiffon saree’ was applauded. In 2006, she co-starred with Saif Ali Khan and Naseeruddin Shah in Being Cyrus (2006), directed by Homi Adajania. She essayed Katy, Shah’s neurotic wife, who has an affair with a younger Cyrus. Cocktail (2012) and Finding Fanny (2014) tapped her reserves of fun even as they completed her trinity with Adajania.

The golden years
Through time, her equation with estranged husband Rajesh went through an overhaul. The two, somehow, never divorced and the initial resentment gave way to a newfound mutual respect. This was more than evident, when he was detected with cancer. The family, along with son-in-law Akshay Kumar, rallied around Rajesh, stepping wholeheartedly into Aashirwad once again, giving him the support and care that perhaps only a family could shower. When he passed away on July 18, 2012, he was given a farewell, which was a reminder of the phenomenon he once was.
Today, Dimple seems to be in a peaceful phase. “Rinkie is my child and Twinkle is my mother. Twinkle looks after us all. She tries to make my life as comfortable as possible,” she one shared with Filmfare. Fond of painting and surfing the internet, she’s enjoying the mellow moments that life has thrown her way. “There has been a lot of pain in my life but I don’t find myself going into that area…This could be wrong because people say it’s cathartic to go through the process. I’m scared of losing myself even for a few minutes. It’s too painful. I don’t know whether that’s going to work for me or hit me all at once. But so far life has been kind,” she had once shared with Filmfare. A deep thought indeed!
