Before I go into Redcliffe, here’e some thought about Theron’s relation to leadership and the early dynamic between him & Alistair.

A short time before I started this playthrough there was a lot of meta on my dash about Alistair shoving off the leadership on the player character despite being the senior warden, which I definitely credit for this being on my mind. And this would result with a different dynamic with eg. the Circle mage origins but what I noticed with Theron is that he, well, he didn’t notice that happening, because he already had an instinct to take charge. This is just sort of the tendency he has as a person, that if something needs to be done he is immediately actionable about it, but also compounded by some specific things here. One, his impression of Alistair, well, the first time they meet is Alistair talking to that Circle mage and honestly, seemed to Theron a bit immature. That actually changes fairly quickly, when they start interacting about warden business he realizes Alistair just tends to talk shit, but when it comes down to it he seems responsible and takes things seriously when it’s needed. But at the same time, Alistair is younger than him, not that much, but Alistair is freshly twenty, Theron is 25, and while Alistair has seniority as a Grey Warden, Theron does have the impression Alistair has less Life Experience In General. So he does defer to Alistair when he’s the senior warden and Theron a recruit because the dynamics of the Order call for that, but the ‘seniority’ is specifically in this context, when they fight through the Tower together they feel on even ground.

Now, a very interesting shift in dynamics is actually from something else. Theron does have a tendency to take charge, true, but so far in life there was ultimately an authority figure he deferred to. He was actionable, but someone pointed him to that action first. Most of his life that was of course the Keeper. And then, Theron has no reason to trust some shem he just met, but Marethari seems to know Duncan to some degree and the matter of him joining the Grey Wardens seemed to be talked over between them, so when he goes with Duncan, he sees this as sort of an extension to listening to the Keeper. He listens to the Keeper, she points him to listen to Duncan, Duncan points him to the duty of a Grey Warden. And then Duncan dies. What Theron has left is the ‘direction’ he’s been pointed in last. There is no longer someone ‘more above him’ who can tell him if he’s going the right way. Honestly, Alistair being that person didn’t even cross his mind. When they wake in Flemeth’s hut, Alistair is clearly shaken by what happened, and we’re back to Theron’s personality, it’s just natural to him to take action - so he makes sure the other survivor is fine, gets information from Flemeth and Morrigan. Morrigan joins them, and they leave. The topic of leadership gets brought up once they reach Lothering. I went for all the dialogue options about where is x and y and only at the end decided to ask ‘Why are you leaving it up to me?’. Alistari just deflects that well, he thinks we should do this, but he’s not sure if that’s where they should go. Alright. Pretty soon after that I got the banter between Alistair and Morrigan where she points out he’s the senior warden. Honestly, overhearing that is probably about where Theron remembered about that. Alistair ‘prefers to follow’? That is just as well, Theron will continue to lead then. He’ll look to Alistair for information about the Grey Wardens and shemlen politics, since he has more experience there. But he wasn’t expecting him to take charge, neither of them was ‘supposed’ to be in charge really, nothing could have prepared them for being the only ones left. 

And I think, from there on, Theron crafts a role for himself, and a lot of his actions are him consciously acting as that role.

Hi, dragon age origins ending question. What would you say about the 'Alistari and Anora ruling together' option? How do you think that would work out? You mentioned that you didn't like Anora. But, as much as I also hate her, she has the resources, popularity, and politic skills(yea I am counting manipulation and such). And Alistair, no matter hardened or unhardened, probably is far from a king material then.

Well we know how that works out thanks to DA:I, but if you asked me about what I feel the details were, I would say that either he ends up growing in skill to be able to play at her level (which is arguably bad), she completely works around him and actually runs thing (bad), or he somehow convinces her to be less real politik (debatably bad).

Never Just: accent description writing practice
