you know, The Hill of Swords was my favorite piece of literature for a few years

a bit of backstory for those unfamiliar:

there is a light novel/manga/anime series called The Familiar of Zero. it takes place at a magic school in a fantasy world, where our main heroine, Louise Valliere, is a failure of a mage. all of her classmates mockingly call her The Zero because she has “zero skill”- every time she attempts to cast a spell, something explodes. the first spell she ever successfully casts is the Summon Familiar spell, and even then, it doesn’t work quite right. instead of summoning some sort of magical beast like a dragon, or even just an animal like a dog, she summons a human. specifically, our main protagonist, Saito, who is summoned from modern-day Japan. one could thus consider the story an isekai, but some people say that it’s only an isekai if it came out after SAO and is based on video game tropes, and neither of those is true for FoZ.

anyways, there is a popular genre of FoZ fanfic. mostly crossover fanfic, but not always. the genre? replacing Saito. having Louise’s summoning go... differently than it does in canon. some popular ones include one where she summons Napoleon Bonaparte, Yuuka from Touhou, and even the servers for Halkegenia Online from the second half of SAO’s first season- and in summoning the servers, she ends up fusing the worlds of HGO and FoZ, and stranding all of HGO’s currently online players in this new world. some other examples i’ve seen- Grimlock from Transformers, the Jabberwock from Alice in Wonderland, and just a smarter version of Saitou (this one also falls under the banner of “Rational Fic”, the genre of fanfic inspired by Harry Potter and the Methods of Rationality, which is just “what if the protagonist was really smart?”).

but the most popular one, the one that popularized the genre and is often mistakenly believed to have started it, is The Hill of Swords, where she summons Shirou from Fate. post-Fate route F/SN (though with elements of the UBW route, too).

it is a lot of fun, and i’ve reread it several times. it does help that i actually downloaded it onto my kindle several years ago.

A story of daily life, love & marriage and death & eternity in a small American town nestled in at 42°40′ north latitude and 70°37′ west longitude.  This production is directed by John Trainor and runs May 18, 2018 through June 3, 2018.

Set in the fictional town of Grover’s Corners, Thornton Wilder’s masterpiece is narrated by a Stage Manager and performed with minimal props and sets as the audience follows the Webb and Gibbs families, as their children fall in love, marry, and eventually – in one of the most famous scenes in American theater history – die.  

The Ghent Playhouse is thrilled to present the playwright’s definitive version of Our Town, described by Edward Albee as “… the greatest American play ever written.”  Winner of the 1938 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.

The cast includes Eric Washburn, Joe Kelly, Susan Dantz, Meaghan Rogers, Quinn Haley, Tula Haley, Bill Shein, Amy Hausknecht, Clyde Drake, Ely Loskowitz, Kathy Marin Wohlfeld, Sam Reilly, Gene Fox, Mark Lant, Bob Walker, Karen McNulty, Randi Lant, Julie Valliere, Amy Loskowitz and Alice Roth.

This production is produced by Playhouse President Kelly Mackerer.  Artistic Director Cathy Lee-Visscher is the set designer.  Arielle Lant is the stage manager.  Costumes by Joanne Maurer and Lighting design by Izzy Filkins. 

Friday and Saturday performances are at 8 pm and Sunday matinees are at 2 pm.  Tickets are $22 each, $17 for Members of the Playhouse and $10 for Students with ID.  Tickets may be reserved by calling 1-800-838-3006 or going to the website at www.ghentplayhouse.org.
