2 more great new shows to report on... Last Sunday afternoon I attended the world premiere of Rochelle Perry’s touching and well written new drama Unforgettable at  Write Act Repertory Theatre located at The Brickhouse a cozy venue in North Hollywood.  This poignant powerful piece is about an Asian family dealing with a grandmother  affected by dementia.  Randi Tahara is terrific as Grandma Keiko.  Her granddaughter Rita well portrayed by Tracy Lee is assigned to be her caregiver while her doctor Mom is away on a much needed break.  Rochelle Perry has written a very moving new piece inspired by a true story  striking  many chords for those who have a loved one dealing with the disease or have a friend with a loved one struggling with the disease.  Ms. Perry artfully weaves in colorful and romantic flashback scenes of the young alluring Keiko well portrayed by Ami Shimada and her dashing beau soon to be husband/love of her life Joseph well  played by George Infantado.  Adding to the drama are Diane Chernansky and Godfrey Flax who are both double cast.   I highly recommend Unforgettable.   It  is well directed  by Cassie Soliday and well produced by the award winning duo of Tamra Pica and John Lant.  Kudos to lighting designer Mark Baker, costume designer Isabel Gallegos, associate producer/production stage manager Jonathan Harrison.  Unforgettable runs til October 13th.  For more info visit www.brownpapertickets.com/event/4334653 and enjoy this touching show!
Next up at Theatre 40 in Beverly Hills also making it’s World Premiere was the searing and thought provoking new drama The Surveillance Trilogy written by talented Leda Siskind and well directed by Amanda Conlon who are both Theatre  40 members.  The cast in all 3 pieces are wonderful and the intriguing suspenseful trilogy deals with artificial intelligence in the  world spanning from the   1950s to the present time.  The trilogy is well produced by Theatre 40 artistic director David Hunt Stafford.   Act 1 consisted of 2 stirring short plays -  Until All of This Is Over starring  Landon Beatty and Jocelyn Hall as a mismatched married couple followed by The Havana Syndrome starring Warren Davis and Stacey Moseley in a startling and strong piece about a deeply troubled woman in therapy.  After intermission we were treated to Are You Listening a modern family drama starring Charlotte Evelyn Williams, Sequoia Granger and  Max Pescherine.  Great work by all the cast members.  Kudos to costume designer Michele Young, sound designer  Joseph “Sloe” Slawinski, set designer Jeff G. Rack, lighting designer Brandon Baruch and stage manager Don Solosan.   The Surveillance Trilogy plays til Oct. 14 -  visit www.theatre40.org for more information or call 310 364 0535.  Get your tickets soon for this must see production.   Thank you Sandra Kuker PR for the invitations to see Rochelle Perry’s Unforgettable and Leda Siskind’s The Surveillance Trilogy - I enjoyed both productions immensely!

NPP’s Performance On Sports Development Is Unprecedented
Just within 3 and half years in office, the Nana Akufo Addo’s government in the development of sports infrastructure and promotion is unprecedented.
When he appointed one of his young appointees to man the Youth and Sports sector, many were anxious if the gentleman could bring any positive change in the area of sports infrastructure. The infrastructural angle has been the cry of many sports persons in the country.
The youth are found in every nook and cranny of our country. The talents are scattered all over but the absence of the infrastructure to unearth those talents are not readily available.
So the government through its sector Minister, Issac Kwame Asiamah decided to use the party’s manifesto as a guide to implement what some people termed abstract and unattainable vision. The Minister took up the challenge.
He marshalled his team. Within some few months approvals were given and immediately all the ten construction of the FIFA approved stadia across the then ten regions of the country began. These stadia have other sporting facilities for other sports such as basketball courts, lawn tennis, swimming pools, tartan tracks, etc. The interesting angle is that these stadia are not only in the regional capitals but scattered to the other hamlets.
For instance, some can be found in Yendi,Navirongo,Axim,Dorman Ahenkro, Dunkwa on Offin etc. These are not regional capitals.
Also included in the stadia are computer training centers and restaurants.
I was saddened and disheartened when a former Sports Minister in the previous government and his party’s chief communicator struggled to ‘defame’ this laudable translation of a vision into tangibles or actions.
Football people, sports personalities, sports media, budding youth are applauding the government for this wonderful gift. That at long last,a government had demonstrated a true commitment to salvage or fill the lacuna of sports infrastructure in the country.
It was very gratifying to listen to a senior sports journalist who also doubles as the President of the Sports Writers Association of Ghana,Mr Kwabena Yeboah commending the Hon Minister and his government for such an initiative.
The government has also announced that, the six newly created regions would soon benefit from this project. I am informed that, most of the ten under construction would be completed before December, this year.
No wonder Ghanaians condemned the partisan angle by NDC, led by its unperformed Minister,Nii Lante Vanderpuye for the party’s criticism of these gifts to the good people of our country, especially the sporting public.
In 2008,when the country hosted the Afcon tournament under the leadership of President Kuffour, two of our stadia were renovated, that is Accra and Kumasi and two more were constructed in Tamale and Essipong to host the tournament.
What happened to the stadia when NPP Government was removed from office after the 2008 elections,?
The poor leadership of over 5 NDC Ministers left these investments to rot.Ten solid years of total neglect. It took the visionary leadership of Isaac Kwame Asiamah to see to the renovations of three of the stadia.
Accra sports stadium is back to life as it hosted AFCON Women’s Tournament in 2018.Today, league matches and other sporting events are held during day and night.
Local economies are booming and talents are being unearthed.
Essipong and Kumasi stadia are also being renovated. Tamale will follow suit.
When leaders failed, they are not honest to appreciate their successors who are correcting their failures. Every rational person will continue to commend the government and the Minister for this implementable vision.
The government is determined to change the phase of sports especially sporting facilities so it can unearth many talents across the country and participate all competitions and also win laurels to the nation. It is rare for sports to develop without infrastructure. Provide infrastructure and sports will develop.
Ghana is big.The vision is to give every region of the country a bit of sporting feeling by providing such edifices.
Very shameful to watch Sammy Gyamfi struggling to disown and fault such investments even when the host of the programme, ‘Good Morning Ghana’ ‘Randy Abbey was educating him about the existence of the projects.
There is hope for sports development and promotion as a determined government and its Minister are filling in the gaps and providing the tangibles.
Well done Nana Addo.
Well done Isaac Asiamah.

Merci.
Prêt à montrer vos clichés au monde entier ? Créez un superbe portfolio avec Wix !

Every generation, it seems, must have its “Chalk Garden.” Major revivals pop up every decade or so like crocuses sprouting in spring. And then there’s the popularity the 1955 Enid Bagnold play enjoys in regional theater, perhaps owing to its meaty dialogue and eccentric characters.
Is it any wonder that the Ghent Playhouse’s new production of “The Chalk Garden,” under the direction of artistic director Cathy Lee-Visscher, took an exceedingly dark tone with this British dramedy? That’s about right for this #MeToo generation. But it’s a pity that some of Bagnold’s wit and satire couldn’t shine through more.
In actuality, “The Chalk Garden,” for all its actorly chops, fits awkwardly against contemporary America—both more relevant than ever and oddly disconnected—hailing from a time of nascent feminism in England weighted down by postwar norms and still viewing liberated women as upstarts and eccentrics. (Trigger warnings and spoilers ahead.)
The story revolves around a triangle of “troubled” women: Mrs. St. Maugham (Wendy Spielmann), who tends her country estate garden and looks after her granddaughter, Laurel (Elisheva Malfatto); and a mysterious governess, Miss Madrigal (Sally McCarthy), who answers an ad to take care of the teenager.
Each of them bears a kind of moral burden, though an ambiguous one: Mrs. St. Maugham may have driven away her daughter, Laurel’s mother Olivia (Lee-Visscher); Miss Madrigal may have murdered a stepsister; and Laurel may have been “violated” (Bagnold’s explicit term) as a preteen.
The heart of the drama turns on the question most often associated with #MeToo: whom do you believe? In 1955 England, the answers are complicated by other questions regarding women’s ability to distinguish truth from fiction and whether anyone can see through to their “true” natures.
This slideshow requires JavaScript.
Also hovering around for the unfolding events are Maitland (Steve King), a reluctant servant; an unseen, unwell butler living upstairs, named Pinkbell, who represents something like the old order; his nurse (Jewel Winant); and “The Judge” (George Filieau), a friend of Mrs. St. Maugham’s whose arrival for a visit sparks an unraveling of stories.
The Chalk Garden, incidentally, is a literal description of the estate’s garden, where the soil is limestone and everything planted by Mrs. St. Maugham, with advice from the unseen butler, dies. You would be hard-pressed to overlook the metaphorical meaning, just as Miss Madrigal’s healing touch with the garden symbolizes this play’s belief in second chances.
There was ample ramping up of tension as the third act’s confrontation between The Judge and Miss Madrigal drew near, and some riveting mother-daughter showdowns between Olivia and Mrs. St. Maugham, courtesy of some excellent acting by Lee-Visscher and Spielmann.
What was missing from this production of “The Chalk Garden” was the sense of hope and possibility, not to mention just plain carpe diem zaniness hidden underneath each character like a seed needing watering. The actor who came closest was Malfatto, the youngest, who imbued Laurel with a mischievous sparkle. Spielmann had moments of inspired battiness as called for by Mrs. St. Maugham’s character.
Unfortunately, as Miss Madrigal, the heart and soul of the play, McCarthy sustained an overly angry and emotional demeanor—though as I said at the outset, as a directorial choice it may not be entirely inappropriate to our time. It was also difficult to draw a bead on King’s Maitland; he too seemed alternately angry and confused. Filieau was fine as The Judge, if a little stiff, and Winant serviceable as the nurse in a part that is admittedly marginal.
Sam Reilly’s set was gorgeous, Joe Sicotte lighting luminous, and Joanne Maurer’s costumes lovely.
Part of me feels like it’s time to retire old chestnuts like “The Chalk Garden,” and yet as long as there are literary and challenging plays like it, they will forever grow again in half-decent soil.
