Philippines Bans Online Casinos Linked to Scam Centers: An In-Depth Look
In a decisive move to curb criminal activities, Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the shutdown of a vast network of online casinos that have been implicated in numerous illicit operations. These online casinos, known locally as Pogos, short for Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators, primarily serve players in mainland China, where gambling is prohibited. However, Pogos have increasingly been used as fronts for a range of criminal activities, including telephone scams, human trafficking, and other serious offenses.
Tumblr media
A Troubled Industry
Under the presidency of Rodrigo Duterte, Pogos flourished as part of his administration's efforts to foster friendly relations with China. However, President Marcos, in his annual address to parliament, called for an end to the "desecration of our country." He criticized Pogos for masquerading as legitimate entities while engaging in financial scamming, money laundering, prostitution, human trafficking, kidnapping, torture, and even murder.
On Tuesday, the Philippines' gaming regulator announced plans to cancel the licenses of Pogos and phase out the sector by the end of the year. According to government estimates, the Pogo industry comprises over 400 licensed and unlicensed operations, employing around 40,000 people directly and indirectly. Despite generating an estimated 166.5 billion pesos ($2.9 billion) in annual revenue, the industry's economic costs are estimated to be much higher at 266 billion pesos annually.
Criminal Links and National Spotlight
The alleged connection between Pogos and criminal rings came under national scrutiny after a Pogo in a small town was discovered to be a front for a scam center. The town's mayor, Alice Guo, is accused of being a Chinese spy and is currently in hiding. Additionally, clandestine hospitals linked to Pogos were found to be offering plastic surgery services to fugitives and scam center workers to help them evade arrest.
Geopolitical Implications
Since assuming office, President Marcos has reversed the Philippines' pivot towards China, initiated by his predecessor Duterte, and has moved closer to the United States, the country's historic ally. Analysts suggest that the ban on Pogos could be interpreted as an effort to further distance the Philippines from China. Both nations are embroiled in a territorial dispute over the South China Sea, with tensions escalating in recent months.
"Pogos' presence has ceased to be a mere law and order problem. It has been linked to China's creeping 'occupation' of the Philippines for ordinary Filipinos," stated Jean Encinas-Franco, a professor at the University of the Philippines Diliman. She added that Marcos' decision could be seen as a rebuke to Duterte's open Pogo policy, potentially boosting his approval ratings ahead of the crucial mid-term elections in 2025.
Local Reactions
The ban on Pogos has been welcomed by various sectors within the Philippines. Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual told local media that the decision makes the country more attractive to those seeking leisure, as Pogos have created a negative impression associated with violence. George Barcelon, chairman of the Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, expressed his approval, stating that Pogos attract undesirable individuals and endanger the moral fabric of the nation.
The Path Forward
As the Philippines moves to dismantle the Pogo industry, the government faces the challenge of managing the economic and social impacts of the shutdown. While the ban is expected to improve the country's image and reduce crime, it will also require addressing the displacement of thousands of workers and finding alternative sources of revenue to compensate for the loss from the Pogo sector.
The bold decision by President Marcos to shut down Pogos marks a significant step in addressing the intertwined issues of crime and international relations. As the country navigates this complex transition, the global community will be watching closely to see the long-term effects on the Philippines' economy, society, and geopolitical standing.

9 books
I was tagged by @suseagull04 and @happiness-of-the-pursuit :D
Call this the list of books I won't shut up about. In no particular order because I can't go that far to pick favourites
1. The Way of Kings - Brandon Sanderson. This brick of book had me feeling emotions I had not experienced in years, I stubbornly decided to start the Cosmere here and I fully don't regret it.
2. The Inexplicable Logic of my Life - Benjamín Alire Sáenz. I have read this twice, and both times I cried. Real genuine tears as I was reading. I cannot explain in any sort of coherent words what this books means to me.
3. Angels Before Man - rafael nicolás. Do yourself a favour an read this book, please, a queer retelling of Lucifer's fall from heaven and it will be one of the greatest things you've ever read. I love it so much. This book paints a picture that it's so clear and immersive and you feel like you're experiencing everything just as Lucifer is. (rafa si estás viendo esto holi c:)
4. Un beso de Dick - Fernando Molano Vargas. If you speak Spanish please read this book. It had me laughing out loud, crying, and it's such a good reflection on the thoughts of a gay teenager just as they come. I love it.
5. Loveless - Alice Oseman. My favourite Alice Oseman book, a big thing to say because I like all of them. Georgia is a little too relatable and I love her. Also Pip Quintana mi mujer.
6. Like Real People Do - E.L Massey. The MOST fun book ever, ate it up in a day, reads like fanfiction and this is the biggest compliment ever.
7. Six of Crows - Leigh Bardugo. You know when you say "God I wish I could experience this for the first time" that is this book, it's so easy to faill in love with it, with the characters, with the world. It's fun and intense and read it. Just read it.
8. Red, White and Royal Blue - Casey McQuiston. I don't have to state the obvious but I love this book. I read it back in 2019, after many years of not reading, it was one of the first books with queer characters I read and one of the first books I read in English that had a character who was Latino and spoke Spanish, really meant the world to me.
9. Anne sin Filtros- Iria G. Parente y Selene M. Pascual. Once again, if you read in Spanish read!! this!!! book!!! as a matter of fact read everything Iria and Selene write. This is a book inspired by Anne of Green Gables where she is a fic writer, with LGBTQ+ rep, the cutest cover ever and just a very fun time. I have not stopped thinking about this book.
I think everyone has been tagged in this by this point so if you see it and want to do it you're welcome to!

This is the 2005 Christmas Station ID of GMA. The Station ID was themed “Kapuso, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko”
The Christmas Station ID Theme was sung Martin Nievera, Jolina Magdangal, Sam Concepcion, Yeng Constantino, Erik Santos, Ogie Alcasid, Sharon Cuneta, the Christmas Carollers from GMA and the original cast from the TV5 sketch comedy show Goin’ Bulilit. Somehow, The Christmas Station ID Theme Song was shortened due to the video. Somehow, Starting in December 1, 2005, The song “Star ng Pasko” can be heard in DZBB Radyo 594 and various radio stations nationwide.
The Christmas Station ID contains Martin Nievera who is riding on a Jeepney, Heart Evangelista, Dimples Romana, Bea Alonzo, Gabby Concepcion with his daughter KC Concepcion, Eddie Gutierrez and Ruffa Gutierrez, Chad Kinis, Albie Casiño, Janice de Belen, Arcee Muñoz, Alice Dixson, Tuesday Vargas, Ritz Azul, Eula Caballero, Paolo Bediones, Sharon Cuneta, Mike Enriquez, Henry Omaga-Diaz, Jessica Soho, Mel Tiangco, Karen Davila, Amelyn Veloso, Cheryl Cosim, Alvin Elchico, Anthony Taberna, Alex Vincent Medina, Erich Gonzales, Beauty Gonzales, Christian Bables, Ogie Diaz, Piolo Pascual, Rodolfo “Dolphy” Quizon, Albert Martinez, Gerald Anderson, Luis Manzano, Matteo Guidicelli, Patrick Garcia, AJ Perez, Terence Baylon, Carl Cervantes, Martin Escudero, Derek Ramsay, Paolo Ballesteros, Pooh, Pokwang, Edu Manzano, Jericho Rosales, Christopher de Leon, Richard Gutierrez, Raymond Gutierrez, JC de Vera, Jayson Gainza, Zanjoe Marudo, John Prats, Ces Oreña-Drilon, Carmina Villaroel, Eugene Domingo, Nora Aunor, Leandro Muñoz, Kristine Hermosa, Meg Imperial, Gelli de Belen, Empoy Marquez, Mark Lapid, Cherie Gil, Raymart Santiago, JM de Guzman, Jessie Mendiola, Wendell Ramos, Pen Medina, Ping Medina, Janine Gutierrez, Rene Hawkins, Solenn Heusaff, Eric Quizon, Epy Quizon, Richard Gomez and his wife Lucy Torres-Gomez, Janno Gibbs, Polo Ravales, John Lloyd Cruz, EJ Falcon, Roxanne Guinoo, Joyce Jimenez, Valerie Concepcion, Shawn Yao, Keempee de Leon, Eula Valdez, RK Bagatsing, Ian Veneracion, Claudine Barretto, Jose Manalo, Wally Bayola, Kim Atienza, Judy Ann Santos, Cherry Pie Picache, Neil Ryan Sese, Tito Sotto, Vic Sotto, Joey de Leon, Jess Lapid Jr., Mico Halili, Hayden Kho, JP de Guzman, Vhong Navarro, Mel Martinez, Long Mejia, Jolo Revilla, Bong Revilla, Jhong Hilario, John Estrada, Oyo Boy Sotto, Gian Sotto, Ryan Agoncillo, Maine Mendoza, Catherine Bernardo, RJ Padilla, Aga Muhlach, Bembol Roco, Geoff Eigenmann, Gabby Eigenmann, Bernard Palanca, Mico Palanca, featuring child actress Angelica Panganiban who is an original cast member of Goin’ Bulilit, the Spice Girls, the supergroup Group of 30, the SexBomb Girls and DJ Lance the Dinosaur from Sesame Street. The Christmas Station ID features the pre-debut of South Korean boy band BigBang and Wayne Allwine, the voice of Mickey Mouse and Russi Taylor, the voice of Minnie Mouse and president Gloria Macapagal Arroyo who turns on the Christmas Lights and hugs Angelica Panganiban at the very end. Sadly, Fernando Poe Jr. and Mark Gil don’t appear in the 2005 Christmas Station ID because Fernando Poe Jr. died in September 11, 2005 of leukemia and Mark Gil died in November 11, 2005 due to a respiratory failure.
But eventually, This was the only Christmas Station ID to feature the crew from ABS-CBN, GMA and TV5. But somehow, The clips are used from the 2005 ABS-CBN Christmas Station ID in 2005 which is “Sabay Tayo sa Pasko, Kapamilya!”
Somehow, Arcee Muñoz, Alice Dixson, Tuesday Vargas, Ritz Azul, Eula Caballero and Aga Muhlach may have moved to TV5 in 2005, although Ryan Agoncillo has moved to ABS-CBN in 2005.

Faut dire qu'elle était malade là. Malade mentale.
Anais (Virginie Fortin) stealing “fake French” Guillaume Vidal’s thunder at his show, and making a beautiful point in Trop. (translates to “too much”.)
I’ve discovered this French-Canadian series this week, and watch the whole first season, and laughed so much. I’m in love with it! And not only because Evelyne Brochu plays Isabelle, Anais’ sister who tries to adjust to life when the latter comes to live with her in Montréal, and her bipolar disorder is diagnosed soon after. I love it, because it’s brilliant, funny, dealing with mental illnesses in an authentic manner. And also, French-Canadian is an altogether different language from French, and I’ve fallen in love with it, too!
I definitely will need to travel to Montreal and visit Quebec when we can travel again. In the meantime, I’m so glad there are two more series of trop. !
“That is, she was ill. Mentally ill. But she was fine with it, okay? It’s the others who have a problem with it. ‘Normal people’, other people, they’re afraid of everything! But can’t we just, can’t we just help each other, and make life more beautiful, everybody together? Eh? Some people try, but then we tell them it’s upsetting. Some people don’t have a penis, wished they had one; but that’s upsetting. Some people just want to be free, but that, that’s upsetting! What does it matter?”

The 25th edition of the International Literature Festival, which will take place from September 20 to 29, 2019, will pay tribute to women who are more than just natural creators. Among the highlights of the program are the opening show Nelly and Sylvia (September 20 and 21, 8 p.m., Cinquième Salle de la Place des Arts) featuring Evelyne Brochu and Alice Pascual. It was the host Claudia Larochelle who had the idea of having Nelly Arcan and Sylvia Plath's texts discuss themes such as creation, motherhood, passionate love and death.

The Christmas Station ID also contains child actor CX Navarro who is a member of Goin’ Bulilit from TV5 replacing Angelica Panganiban who is now adolescent. At the very end, The book closes with sparkles coming out and the text “The End” at the end cover appears similar to the 2010 Station ID of GMA with the 2005 ABS-CBN logo and the text at the bottom that says “Maligayang Pasko, Kapamilya!”
This is the second Christmas Station ID to feature the crew from ABS-CBN, GMA and TV5 after “Sabay Tayo sa Pasko, Kapamilya!”
But eventually, The scenes were originally combined from the 2005 Christmas Station IDs from ABS-CBN and GMA which are “Sabay Tayo sa Pasko, Kapamilya!” from ABS-CBN and “Kapuso, Ikaw ang Star ng Pasko” from GMA.
