A young vigilante - dubbed “An Emerald Dagger” by her supporters - is on the run with a group of detectives after her. Fast as the gusts of wind, sharp as the blades of knives, it is impossible to catch a hold of this girl. All the while these detectives try to figure things out with no success, more and more kills are occurring. Tired of this, a rookie intern decides to take matters into her own hands and figure out who this “Dagger” actually is. What Nyra finds however, leads her down a ruthless and bloody rabbit hole of forgotten conflicts, a slew of betrayals and an all too familiar face.

Ornette is the only one who has one parent confirmed to be dead.
Moxie's father is alive, and her mother left to the city. So did Cleo's parents, and Jake's.
Pip and Squeak's father is "sick," while it's implied that he's dead, it's never actually stated or confirmed. Their mother is never mentioned. Neither is Kellar and Lizzie's father, and their mother is alive and well.
Well, actually, if you include Ellington in the Stain'd-by-the-Sea children, Ornette's not the only one anymore, because her father is dead too...

The Auteurs - New Wave (1993)
New Wave faz 40 anos este ano.

Alternative readings for The Body Keeps the Score
hi, i'm a practicing mental health therapist and a writer here on tumblr dot com. the body keeps the score by dr. bessel van der kolk has a couple issues with it, primarily in the author's very much cishet male eurocentric approach to trauma and the graphic nature of the book. here's a list of some books about trauma that i've found preferable to the body keeps the score in addressing trauma and how the body holds onto trauma. i've included pdf links for ones i could find:
HEALING TRAUMA by peter a. levine. this one is a far less denser read than the body keeps the score while still providing solid education on trauma symptomatology. it even comes with mp3 access to exercises to address somatic symptoms.
MY GRANDMOTHER'S HANDS by resmaa menakem. this one discusses how racism in america is ingrained in our society and how intergenerational racial trauma is ingrained in our bodies.
INFLAMED by rupa marya & raj patel. this was written in response to the COVID-19 pandemic and the structural injustices in medicine that caused so many racial disparities in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, and how trauma caused by our political systems affect the different systems of the body.
THE POLITICS OF TRAUMA: SOMATICS, HEALING, & SOCIAL JUSTICE by staci haines. a great read on how trauma is not just an individual problem but a societal problem, and how to integrate trauma work into society at large.
TRAUMA & RECOVERY by judith l. herman. this is a classic in the therapy field and really set the tone for our modern approaches to trauma treatment. the pdf linked is the first edition of the book but it has since been updated as we learn more about complex trauma.
THE BODY NEVER LIES: THE LINGERING EFFECTS OF CRUEL PARENTING by alice miller. what it says on the tin: this book covers the effects of trauma inflicted by parents on the body and the brain.
cheers, and happy reading!

Moxie’s mother leaving, and her father falling into melancholia.
Like Kellar’s mother allying with Hangfire.
Like Ellington’s father being Hangfire.
Like whatever happened to Pip and Squeak’s father.
Like Ornette’s mother dying and her father being unable to raise her (or afraid for her safety?) and so sending her to live with her uncles.
Like Jake’s parents, and later Cleo’s, leaving town without them.
And all that, of course, is without getting into Lemony’s parents, whom he hadn’t seen in so long that Gifford and Ghede were reasonably certain that they could pull off a good portrayal of them...
Tumblr media
This is the recurring theme of the series: Parents abandon or betray their children, forcing them to fend for themselves. 😭

the fact that an alicent stan made a post barely an hour ago about how book! alicent is a good character and people who hate her are pussies (well written, yes. do i like her? no). she is an interesting character and some of y’all have the mindset of scrungly english people living in the fourteenth century and too much invested in the anti alicent tag for being her stans like...
idgaf what y'all think about show! alicent but f&b! alicent is that one insufferable pickme relative from your dad's side in a desi household who would probably degrade you for even breathing wrongly for a second and in the same breath shamelessly drag praises for her children (it doesn't matter if that kid is really that great or like the most useless creature to walk on this planet, she would still do it and repeat them tbf) to the point you want to stuff your own head into the pillow and to make your mother divorce your father.

Seen in ’23: Annual Roundup
Tumblr media
Top new-to-me films of ‘23
(in the order I saw them, not preference)
The Blizzard / Gunnar Hedes saga (1923) [imdb | letterboxd]
The Rafter’s Bride / Koskenlaskijan morsian (1923) [imdb | letterboxd]
Funeral Parade of Roses / 薔薇の葬列 (1969) [letterboxd | imdb]
Dorian Gray in the Mirror of the Yellow Press / Dorian Gray im Spiegel der Boulevardpresse (1984) [letterboxd | imdb]
Drylongso (1998) [letterboxd | imdb]
The Cruz Brothers and Miss Malloy (1980) [letterboxd | imdb]
The Burning Crucible / Le Brasier ardent (1923) [letterboxd | imdb]
Let’s Scare Jessica to Death (1971) [letterboxd | imdb]
Merry-Go-Round (1923) [letterboxd | imdb]
Dream Demon (1988) [letterboxd | imdb]
Mazel Tov / Ost und West (1923) [letterboxd | imdb]
The Signal Tower (1924) [letterboxd | imdb]
The Second Track / Das zweite Gleis (1962) [letterboxd | imdb]
Restless Blood / Levoton Veri (1946) [letterboxd | imdb]
The Man Without Desire (1923) [letterboxd | imdb]
Revolutionary Girl Utena: The Adolescence of Utena / 少女革命ウテナ アドゥレセンス黙示録 (1999) [letterboxd | imdb]
---
Honorable mention:
Ritratto di donna velata (1972) [letterboxd | imdb] (because it’s technically a mini-series)
Spirits of the Dead / Histoires extraordinaires (1968) [letterboxd | imdb] (because it would make the year-end list for “Toby Dammit” alone TBH)
So, according to letterboxd, only 33% of the films I watched in 2023 were rewatches. In an unexpected bit of consistency, that’s also my proportion of rewatches for ‘22 and ‘21. Sometimes crunching the numbers teaches you potentially meaningless things about yourself.
On my letterboxd, I put together a list of my top new-to-me films of ’23, in case you want an easier way to check if there’s anything you might want to add to your own watchlists!
READ ON BELOW THE JUMP!
Tumblr media
As I continued my tradition of watching films as they turn 100, the 1920s was my most-watched decade as it was in 2022.
Tumblr media
I was startled looking at the stats that the 1930s were so underrepresented! To ward that off in 2024, I think I’ll binge some pre-codes. Maybe we should all watch pre-codes in March 2024 to dishonor Will Hays on his birthday?
My top individual years were:
1923
1987
1986
1920
1911
1971 (unexpected!)
1988
---
Tumblr media
In another bit of unexpected consistency, I seem to have watched roughly 60% American-made films every year for the last 3 years?
Tumblr media
Regardless, I think my MVP for this year was Finland. Teuvo Tulio is quickly becoming one of my favorite directors and the silent films from Finland that I watched this year were highlights too!
---
Tumblr media
My most watched actors for 2023 were:
Alice Howell
James Finlayson
Stan Laurel
Snub Pollard
Katherine Grant
Marie Mosquini
Christopher Lee
Jackie Cooper
Lois Weber
Mabel Normand
Noah Young
Oliver Hardy
Richard Smith
Can you tell that I watched a ton of silent comedy in 2023? Of course Marie and Snub are making a return appearance here from last year, so I suppose I watched plenty of comedy shorts in ‘22 as well.
If you were only to count the feature films that I watched, Christopher Lee, Boris Karloff, Douglas Fairbanks, Vincent Price, and William Haines would top the list!
---
Tumblr media
My most watched directors were:
Alice Guy
Dave Fleischer
George Jeske
Arthur Rankin Jr. & Jules Bass
Charley Chase
John G. Blystone
Lois Weber
Richard Smith
Maya Deren
Phillips Smalley
Another affirmation that I watched a whole lot of silent shorts, but this time because of the fantastic Pioneers: First Women Filmmakers set. I highly recommend picking up a copy (or checking it out of your local library). Not only is the set well curated, but there are so many great extras to put the films in context.
For Christmas ‘23, I got the Cinema’s First Nasty Women set and I’m very excited to marathon those and be influenced into a year of behaving badly.
Maya Deren makes the list because I re-watched her films in advance of my cosplay/profile of her. If you haven’t dug into Deren’s short but fascinating filmography yet, I highly recommend it!
