Turkey detains 282 suspects in extensive operation targeting Kurdish insurgents

Turkish authorities detained 282 suspects over the past five days in a sweeping operation aimed at combating the outlawed Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya announced.

The suspects were apprehended across 51 of Turkey’s 81 provinces, Yerlikaya stated in a post on the social media platform X.

According to local media, those arrested include members of small political parties, an artist, and at least three journalists. The detentions come amid renewed efforts between Ankara and the PKK to resolve a long-standing conflict that has resulted in tens of thousands of casualties. The efforts are anticipated to involve a call by the PKK’s imprisoned leader, Abdullah Öcalan, for the group to disarm.

Yerlikaya stated that the detained individuals are suspected of providing financial support to the PKK, recruiting members, engaging in propaganda activities, and participating in violent street protests. During the raids, police also seized two AK-47 assault rifles and other weapons, he added.

In recent months, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s government intensified its crackdown on opposition groups, leading to the arrests of journalists, politicians, and others. Several elected Kurdish mayors have been removed from office over alleged ties to the PKK and replaced with state-appointed officials.

The most recent such dismissal occurred on Saturday, when the mayor of Van municipality in eastern Turkey was ousted and replaced by the provincial governor.

The PKK, which has waged a decades-long insurgency in Turkey, is designated as a terrorist organisation by both Turkey and its allies.

Hotel fire at Turkey ski resort kills at least 76

The number of victims of a fire at a ski resort in Turkey’s Bolu province has risen to 76, the country’s Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya said on Wednesday.

The Turkish minister told reporters that nine people, including the hotel owner, had been detained as part of the investigation into the accident. The cause of the fire has not yet been determined. Investigators are looking into the details of the construction and operation of the hotel from the beginning to the tragedy.

According to Turkish media, the hotel, built in 1974, is clad in wood, which contributed to the rapid spread of the fire. According to one of the rescued guests, there were no smoke detectors or fire extinguishers in the building. A total of 237 people lived in the hotel.

At night on January 21 there was a fire in the Grand Kartal hotel in the Turkish ski resort of Kartalkaya. Initially it was reported about 10 dead, later their number rose to 60, dozens more people were injured.

428 rescuers and 156 pieces of equipment were involved in extinguishing the fire. According to the Daily Sabah, the extinguishing was hampered by the location of the hotel, which is in a mountainous area and firefighters had a harder time reaching it. On Tuesday evening, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared a day of national mourning over the tragedy at the resort.

The Kartalkaya ski resort is a popular holiday destination located in the Keroglu Mountains region about 270 kilometres from Istanbul and a 2-hour drive from Ankara.

Turkish police have detained 1,113 people across the country over five days of protests as President Recep Tayyip Erdogan blames the main opposition party for the unrest sparked by the detention of his main political rival. Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya confirmed the total number of arrests on Monday after a fifth night of the largest anti-government protests the country has seen in more than a decade. Turkish authorities have arrested more than 1,100 people including journalists, while bombarding the social media platform X with requests to block hundreds of accounts after tens of thousands took to the streets in the largest anti-government protests in years. One journalist was detained while covering demonstrations that took place outside Istanbul city hall, while nine others were detained in dawn raids. The Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, speaking after a cabinet meeting in the capital, Ankara, called the protests a “movement of violence”. He said the country’s main opposition Republican People’s party (CHP) would be held accountable for injuries to police officers and damage to property, adding that they should stop “provoking” the public. The sweeping arrests came the morning after the Istanbul mayor, Ekrem İmamoğlu, was arrested on corruption charges and sent to a high-security prison on the outskirts of the city, on the same day he was named the opposition’s candidate for president. Mass demonstrations triggered by İmamoğlu’s detention amount to the largest in Turkey in more than a decade. The protests have resulted in increasing pushback from the Turkish authorities, with police now readily deploying pepper spray, teargas and armoured water cannon trucks against crowds gathering in Istanbul as well as other major towns and cities across the country. On Monday evening, crowds of students filled streets in the Beşiktaş neighbourhood, but were quickly hemmed in by lines of riot police. The Turkish interior minister, Ali Yerlikaya, said 1,133 people had been detained in five days, starting with the dawn raid in which İmamoğlu and tens of municipal officials were taken into custody. Many of those detained in the days since were arrested for breaching a city-wide ban on protests in Istanbul. The city’s governor also restricted entry to Istanbul over the weekend in an attempt to curb the demonstrations. Yerlikaya added that “some circles have been abusing the right to assembly and demonstration, attempting to disrupt public order, inciting street events and attacking our police. Such actions are aimed at disrupting the peace and security of our people.”. Turkish authorities deny that the charges against İmamoğlu, a rival of the president, are political. Even so the crackdown on the Istanbul mayor as well as the protests have proven costly to the Turkish state, as economists estimate the Turkish central bank spent up to $25bn (£19.3bn) propping up the lira in three days last week.

Turkey’s war on journalists (or really anyone anti-Erdoğan) has ramped up in recent days, and that’s due to protests against the arrest of İstanbul Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu. İmamoğlu would be favored to potentially beat Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, hence, the politically-motivated arrest to throw him off the ballot.
