Heya! What are your favorite Bollywood films?
Hello anon. Most of my fav Bollywood movies are actually just SRK movies. I'll tell you my top 5 -
Main Hoon Na (will forever be my no.1. Love the chemistry btw srk and Sushmita and just everything about this movie. Music album is also a banger)
Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (I will forever defend this movie. I believe that years of friendship can later on turn to love as well {people believe in the love like WHEN HARRY MET SALLY but reduce Rahul and Anjali's love to "she got hot so he fell in love". WHY? fuck people}. Album is once again a banger)
Om Shanti Om (what can I say about this movie that hasn't already been said and dissected at length. Best Farah Khan movie. Everyone should watch it once in their lifetime. My all time fav song is also in this movie. SUCH A GOOD MUSIC ALBUM, kisses kisses kisses)
Chennai Express (my fav rom-com of bollywood. Love the recreation of the iconic srk train pose. Love the dynamics btw Deepika and Srk in this one)
Happy Bhaag Jayegi (abhay deol *muah* just the amount of pinning by him knowing he loves someone who's in love with someone else and even if she wasn't there was no way in hell they'll be allowed to be together. Overall loved it for its comedic aspect, ALI FAZAL and JIMMY SHERGILL)

It took me four months to write this post even though i used to do it monthly. The last post was for January, this one includes films watched between February and May 2022. Eighteen films in total. I used to watch twice as many films per month. The war took its toll, I guess... 1. Favourite movies: Smilin' Through (1932), The Batman (2022), Scandal Sheet (1952), The Big Combo (1955), Rebecca (1940) 2. Decent movies I liked / appreciated but not loved: Woman in Hiding (1950), Lost Horizon (1937), The Thrill of it All (1963), The Blob (1988), Sleepy Hallow (1999) 3. Best scenes: the flashbacks (Smilin' Through, 1932); the car chase / Bruce and Alfred at the hospital / goodbye between Batman and Catwoman (The Batman, 2022); the final shootout / at the opera (The Big Combo, 1955); the final boss battle (Uncharted, 2022); explaining what happened to the builders in The Thrill of It All (1963); confronting Maxim (Rebecca, 1940). 4. Favourite genres: romance, drama, fantasy, noir. 5. Favourite directors: Matt Reeves (The Batman, 2022); Joseph H. Lewis (The Big Combo, 1955); Tim Burton (Sleepy Hallow, 1999); Alfred Hitchcock (Rebecca, 1940). 6. Favourite actors: Johnny Depp, Chritina Ricci (Sleepy Hallow, 1999); Doris Day, James Garner (Move Over, Darling, 1963; The Thrill of It All, 1963); Norma Shearer, Fredric March, Leslie Howard (Smilin' Through, 1932); John Derek, Broderick Crawford (Scandal Sheet, 1952); Robert Pattinson, Colin Farrell, Zoe Kravitz, Andy Serkis, Paul Dano (The Batman, 2022); Cornel Wilde, Richard Conte, Jean Wallace (The Big Combo, 1955); Tom Holland (Uncharted, 2022); Ida Lupino (Woman in Hiding, 1950); Ronald Colman (Lost Horizon, 1937); Lawrence Olivier, Joan Fontaine (Rebecca, 1940). 7. Least favourite performances: Armie Hammer (Death on the Nile, 2022). Not only was it incredibly uncomfortable to watch him due to his off-screen behaviour but the performance was so over-the-top I couldn't take it seriously at all. It was really hard, close to impossible. 8. The most wasted cast: everyone was okay at least. If I had to choose, I'd say Death on the Nile (2022) but it's not a bad film in itself. Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Kenneth Branaugh, Russel Brand (random...), Letitia Wright, Emma Mackey, Armie Hammer, Gal Gadot, Rose Leslie, Ali Fazal, Rosie Dwyer. 9. The best wasted premise: Repeat Performance (1947). It's one of the films with the most wasted potential, and all due to an endless series of stupid decisions. Had the protagonist been smarter and less melodramatic, the film would have been a gem. 10. Best premise: The Big Combo (1955); The Batman (2022); Rebecca (1940); Sleepy Hallow (1999). 11. Favourite cast: The Batman (2022). Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Jeffrey Wright, Colin Farrell, Paul Dano, John Turturro, Andy Serkis, Peter Sarsgaard. On a smaller scale, it's Smilin' Through (1932) with Norma Shearer, Leslie Howard and Fredric March (a small three-man gem of a film) and The Big Combo (1955) with Cornel Wilde, Richard Conte and Jean Wallace. I'm just finding out how amazing Richard Conte was as an actor and it's glorious! 12. Favourite on-screen duos: Norma Shearer x Leslie Howard / Norma Shearer x Fredric March (Smilin' Through, 1932); Robert Pattinson x Andy Serkis / Robert Pattinson x Zoe Kravitz (The Batman, 2022); Doris Day x James Garner (Move Over, Darling, 1963; The Thrill of It All, 1963); Cornel Wilde x Richard Conte x Jean Wallace (in any combination) (The Big Combo, 1955); Joan Fontaine x Laurence Olivier (Rebecca, 1940). 13. Favourite on-screen relationships: Batman + Catwoman (The Batman, 2022). They do them so much justice in this film that there's barely any competition. Lt. Leonard Diamond + Susan Lowell / Mr. Brown + Susan Lowell (The Big Combo, 1955). Both relationships are more than a little dysfunctional but so fascinating to watch! Steve McCleary + Julie Allison (Scandal Sheet, 1952). It's fun and easy to follow, and a bit cheeky. Moonyeen + Sir John Carteret (Smilin' Through, 1932). I liked Fredric March in the film, too, but it's obviously about the undying love between these two that makes the film as touching as it is). Maxim de Winter + Mrs. de Winter (Rebecca, 1940). 14. Favourite characters: Batman, Catwoman, Alfred, The Riddler (The Batman, 2022); Lt. Leonard Diamond, Susan Lowell, Mr. Brown (The Big Combo, 1955); Steve McCleary, Julie Allison, Mark Chapman (Scandal Sheet, 1952); Deborah Chandler Clark (Woman in Hiding, 1950); Maxim de Winter, Mrs. de Winter (Rebecca, 1940). 15. Favourite quote: Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley again. (Rebecca, 1940). 16. Favourite fact discovered in 2022: Cornel Wilde and Jean Wallace were married when making The Big Combo (1955) and Ida Lupino was married to Howard Duff when he played her abusive conniving husband in Woman in Hiding (1950). I've also just found out the director of photography for Rebecca (1940), George Barnes, was married to Joan Blondell between 1933 and 1936. That's random... 17. The most overrated film: I think every film is pretty deserving of the reputation it has really. 18. The most disappointing film: Repeat Performance (1947). Just because had they made some smarter decisions it would've been a classic, and a really unique classic at that. 19. The biggest surprise: The Big Combo (1955). It's very tense, seductive, maniacal and powerful film. I miss those. 20. Best cinematography: John Alton (The Big Combo, 1955). It's absolutely marvelous! Greig Fraser (The Batman, 2022); George Barnes (Rebecca, 1940); Emmanuel Lubezki (Sleepy Hallow, 1999). 21. Best set design: Rebecca (1940), The Batman (2022). 22. Best costume design: Irene (Rebecca, 1940); Don Loper (The Big Combo, 1955). 23. Best music: Rebecca (1940). 24. Best prooduction choice: casting Robert Pattinson in The Batman (2022) and Richard Conte in The Big Combo (1955); practical effects in The Blob (1988). 25. Worst production choice: the script in Repeat Performance (1947) and the uncomfortably revealing Death on the Nile (2022). 26. Film of the month: The Big Combo (1955) and Rebecca (1940).

On Armie Hammer: "It's about making Kenneth's day as effective as possible. Yesterday, for example, I got to be a stand-in for Armie Hammer's character, when Kenneth needed to get an idea of how the camera should move in a certain scene."
Eriksson has received a lot of questions about Armie Hammer from female acquaintances, and can reveal Hammer is just as nice as he is handsome, and that all the actors on set are incredibly professional, focused and polite. He says he doesn't get too starstruck but is having a lot of fun working with Russell Brand.
On Russell Brand and Kenneth Branagh: "Russell seems down to earth and cares a lot about other people. I am also very impressed with Kenneth Branagh's work. He is incredibly generous, extremely professional, and both directs, and plays his character at the same time."
Tumblr media
Actor Ali Fazal talked more about his role in a October 6 2019 article.
According to Fazal, he is excited about the project as his character was not a part of the original book or the 1978 movie adaptation and the writers developed the part especially for this film. The article mentions him as “one of the leads.”
On his character: "There was no presence of a character from another country in the original book, or even in the first film. That’s why I really admire the diverse nature of the cast. I'm very excited. My accent is very different in the film. I have to work really hard."
On the movie: "The whole film is on the cruise in the Nile. So it is going to be adventurous. But also it has a lovely cast.”

Hey TT! Just curious to know, who are some of your all time favourite bollywood actors and actresses? and who do you like from the current lot? Based on talent and/or personality.
Hey anon!
Honestly I’m not a fan of “actors” or “actresses” as such; more like characters and performances. Like, I don’t like Priyanka (at all, lol) but I can acknowledge that she was the strongest performer/character in Bajirao and the only redeeming grace of that movie. I don’t like Salman, but I thought Sultan was pretty good (y’know… for a Salman movie.) So…… It’s hard for me to pick people, coz I rarely like every movie or performance of a particular actor. I guess all time favs, I’d say SRK and Madhuri. I have the most nostalgia wrt their movies in the 90s, and they kinda defined Bollywood as a genre for me growing up.
Personality wise…. SRK and Abhishek are favs to watch in interviews, coz they’re always charming and witty. Never a boring moment. Oh, I love Diljit Dosanjh, even though I haven’t yet watched a movie of his, coz he’s just so hilarious and adorable. I enjoy Katrina’s (non press junket) interviews, because she drops some heavy truths but in a diplomatic and mature manner. She’s not a great actress (though so good at comedy! Why won’t she do more movies like MBKD and Bang Bang???????), and Salman’s hand in her success is undeniable, but I have to give it to her for being such a hard worker to get where she’s at now.
In the newer bunch…. Lol man, they’re allllllllllll so shady. Like the bigger “stars” and their PR games are just exhausting. I like low key, genuine kinda ppl like Pankaj Tripathi, who are less in the game for fame and more just to do interesting work. I like Vikrant Massey a lot. He seems smart and aware and a non-chutiya. Very suljha hua. Ali Fazal gives me the same vibes too, except more cheeky and fun. These guys don’t operate within the PR machinery and are mostly chill. Vicky Kaushal has had a great year, esp. with the range of roles he’s done, and I’m interested to see how his career shapes up. Rajkummar Rao, ofc. Among the ~~~stars, I like Varun (endearing, forthright to a certain level, lots of potential, does a good mix of movies), Arjun (does absolutely trashhhhhhhh movies, but seems like a decent guy IRL, his recent thirstiness wrt the whole Malaika thing notwithstanding). Of the actresses, I like Anushka best. She seems grounded and mostly aware and informed about the issues. I mostly respect her choice of films (except shit like Zero. Sorry sis. It really looks like it sucks ass. Do better.) and I like that she is take-charge and produces good interesting movies. Alia’s very talented and I enjoy her performances very much, but lord her offscreen life is just so messy. If only she could break off the deal she has with the devil *cough* Sara has been refreshing to watch in interviews so far, she seems bright and quick-witted and very likable overall (Talent wise….. Ehhhhhhh. Maybe she’ll have a rapid glo-up like Alia did, once she starts getting better movies.) Taapsee also picks some interesting movies, and seems pretty driven in her interviews. So yeah……… A buncha ppl I like and will watch interviews of, coz they talk good, but in the end, it’s all about the movie for me. I go by a case by case basis.

Which 2022 film is based on a novel by Agatha Christie?
Tumblr media
'Death on the Nile' is a 2022 mystery thriller movie directed by Kenneth Branagh (born 1960). It is based on the 1937 novel of the same name by Agatha Christie (1890-1976) and serves as a sequel to the 2017 film 'Murder on the Orient Express'. It stars Branagh as the fictional sleuth Hercule Poirot, along with Tom Bateman, Annette Bening, Russell Brand, Ali Fazal, Dawn French, Gal Gadot, Armie Hammer, Rose Leslie, Emma Mackey, Sophie Okonedo, Jennifer Saunders, and Letitia Wright.
The action takes place in Egypt, mostly on the River Nile, where Poirot is invited to join some friends at a hotel to celebrate a wedding. The bride tells Poirot that she distrusts many of her guests, and a couple of days later, she is found dead with a gunshot wound to the head. Poirot begins to interview the guests, gradually ruling out suspects until he solves the crime.
After having been rescheduled several times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, 'Death on the Nile' was finally released on 11th February 2022 by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures under the 20th Century Studios label. After three months, the film had grossed a worldwide total of $137.3 million. It has been nominated for 'Best Action / Adventure Film' at the 47th Saturn Awards, due to be held on 25th October 2022.

A young woman who works as a personal assistant to an investment banker finds herself in over her head when she's asked to play the role of "the good boss." This is the story of that experience.
I'm not usually a fan of comedies, but this one looks like it might be worth checking out.
The trailer is funny, and it also shows that there's some heart to the story as well. I think a lot of people can relate to the idea of being in over their heads at work and having no idea how to get out of it. This film might be able to help them with that!
THE GOOD BOSS looks like it might be a fun movie to watch this weekend. I'm not usually a fan of comedies, but this one looks like it might be worth watching in Cinem chch. The trailer is funny, and it also shows that there's some heart to the story as well.

TICKET TO PARADISE
If you're looking for a light-hearted romance, Ticket to Paradise is the movie for you. The film follows an aspiring young musician named David (played by Ben Platt), who loves his girlfriend Annette (played by Olivia Cooke).
However, Annette breaks up with him and leaves town on a flight to Paris. David decides that he can't live without her, so he buys a ticket on the same flight as Annette's and pretends to be a doctor in order to meet her parents when they visit their daughter during their stay in France.
The film has received mixed reviews from critics but has proven popular among audiences.
MRS. HARRIS GOES TO PARIS
This film is a comedy directed by Stephen Frears. Mrs Harris (Judi Dench) goes to Paris with her granddaughter, played by Ali Fazal. She's having a romantic adventure and trying to get away from her husband (Tom Wilkinson). This movie is upcoming in Cinem chch which is worthy seeing!

Review: DEATH ON THE NILE Does Better Justice to Agatha Christie than ORIENT EXPRESS
Tumblr media
I’ve been a Kenneth Branagh stan for quite some time, but I wasn’t really a fan of his Murder on the Orient Express. I couldn’t even tell you why since I saw it so long ago, I barely remember it. A period murder mystery should definitely be my kind of thing, and that definitely wasn’t, though I love the genre that has brought us Clue, and The Last of Sheila, and of course, most recently, Knives Out. They’re all great in their own respect, but it all leads back to author Agatha Christie and her character, Hercule Poirot
Branagh is back as Poirot for his second movie as the private detective, but first, we get a prologue, a flashback to Poirot’s time fighting in the French trenches during World War I, which essentially acts as an origin for the inspector’s famed moustache. (I wondered if Branagh was able to use Matthew Vaughn’s WWI trenches from The King’s Man when that movie was done.)
Decades later, Poirot is in a London nightclub listening to the dulcet tones of blues singer Salome Otterbourne (Sophie Okonedo) when he witnesses a meeting between besties Jacqueline de Bellefort (Emma Mackey) and billionaire heiress Linnet Ridgeway (Gal Gadot), the latter who graciously accepts an offer to dance by Jackie’s fiancé Simon Doyle (Armie Hammer), which ends up being a lot more risqué than Jackie expected. A few weeks later, Simon and Linnet are engaged to be married and having their wedding in Egypt, though the spurned Jackie still holds a grudge. Poirot himself is in Egypt, where he reconnects with his friend Bouc (Tom Bateman, the only other returnee from Orient Express), who is there with his mother (Annette Bening) for the big wedding.
Tumblr media
All the aforementioned end up on the riverboat Karnac, which Linnet has rented out for her lavish party for friends and other wedding guests, which not only brings together the key players but also a wide cadre of hanger-ons from Linet’s business manager cousin Katchadourian (Ali Fazal) and her doctor (Russell Brand), but all sorts of others who have every reason to want the money inherited by Doyle through his marriage to Linnet.
It’s a good hour before the first “death” as promised in the title, and after that, bodies start piling up, as Poirot tries to find the killer or killers. For some reason, the investigation portion of the film works better than it did in Orient Express, so that the languid pacing of the first hour starts to pay off. Granted, much of those pacing issues are due to the number of characters being introduced, but Branagh seems to have a better handle on Christie and her beloved character than he did first time around.
Although the cast for Orient Express was impressive, Branagh has the benefits of a skilled casting director to get great actors into all the key roles, including Gadot, who has already been attached to play Egyptian Queen Cleopatra. When you see her in Death on the Nile you’ll immediately know why. She’s quite good, but this, once again, is very much an ensemble piece with each of the actors getting enough screen time for you to determine whether you like them or not. I thought Sophie Okonedo was quite good, playing a bit more of a character than we’ve seen from her, and she’s well-paired with Letitia Wright as her niece/manager, Rosalie. I wasn’t familiar with Emma Mackey’s work, but she has a great role as the fly in the ointment of the Doyle wedding going off without a hitch. We even get to see Annete Bening in a rare ensemble role, playing Bouc’s clinging mother, and I actually liked Bateman quite a bit both in his scenes with her and with Branagh.
To address the Armie Hammer in the room, the disgraced actor’s role as the sleazy snake Simon Doyle seems to suit him, amongst a cast where all of them have some sort of issue or imperfection. In fact, even Gadot’s Linnet acts like a bit of a bitch at times. Probably the best bit of casting is reuniting comedy legends Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders (best known simply as French and Saunders), but they’re playing very different non-comedic roles here. Still, it’s wonderful to see them in a major movie together.
Tumblr media
More than anything else, Death on the Nile looks amazing, whether it’s the recreation of many Egyptian landmarks, the way Haris Zambarloukos’s camera bobs and weaves through the halls and stairwells of the Karnak, or just the many shots of the riverboat travelling down the Nile. It all just looks so beautiful thanks to a combination of production design, visual effects, and cinematography, although the latter’s camera calisthenics settle down for the movie’s second half, as Poirot goes into his interrogations, probably the enjoyable aspect of the film. After the big reveal of the killer, Branagh throws on an epilogue that’s probably as needless as the film’s prologue, though it does wrap things up in a nice bow.
What will be interesting to see is if the good karma Branagh has achieved with his autobiographical Belfast will carry over to the much bigger-budgeted Poirot mystery, especially since he was able to bring over many of his craft collaborators. I don’t see that happening, as Nile has the onus of being a sequel to a movie that received mixed reviews that was targeting an older demographic than the current critical pool.
Despite some pacing issues, Death on the Nile looks glorious, offers a great ensemble cast, and a final act that Agatha Christie fans should greatly admire. It’s good enough that I look forward with hopes that Branagh can play the role at least once more.
Rating: 7/10
