Hey! I’m alive! 

Yeah I know I ignore this blog quite often but now I’m here to drop what I’ve read in the meantime. It’s not much I’m afraid. 

Ok so Runebinder. Actually, this was one of the books I put on my lift way before I really got into reading LGBT stuff. I looked like my usual YA fantasy book would look but I didn’t get to reading it. 

I finally did tho and it’s the perfect mix of YA fantasy with an interesting plot and fascinating powers and LGBT action. 

I actually don’t want to spoil too much because I went into this without knowing anything about it and just exploring this world on my own was awesome. 

Also! This is the first part of a trilogy and I actually got all three books as paperbags at some point. They’re just sitting on my shelf looking all pretty right now but I’ll read the rest eventually and update you with a review on the whole trilogy. 

So if you’re into dystopian fantasy and gay characters, I say give it a shot.

Runebinder by Alex R. Kahler hardcover, 400 pages, goodreads ★★★★★

    I was extremely excited to pick up this book. Like, beyond words excited. Dystopia with fantasy elements and an LGBT hero? That’s a dream combination in my eyes. And Runebinder delivered, and kept delivering until I was reading to curl into a ball on the floor.

   The magic system in this book is unlike anything I’ve come across and I love how simple it is without being boring. The world buildng in general is so interesting and unique that I just can’t get enough of it. Kahler has weaved a world similar to our own but still so delightfully different that every twist and turn is just as surprising as the last.

   I, personally, adore the writing style used in this book. I can’t say it’s anything new or fresh, but it works really well with the story and the characters. Kahler clearly knows all of his characters very well, it’s displayed so well throughout the novel that you couldn’t miss it if you tried, and I really appreciate that in a story. 

   Dynamics can make or break a book for me, which means when I thoroughly enjoyed the relationships in Runebinder it just made the book that much better. Tenn is a character I can really relate to, and his relationships throughout the book brought him even more to life. As did the other character’s relationships with each other. There was a lot of variety in the different ways characters reacted to one another which isn’t always the case in dystopias, since a lot of characters are hardened by their difficult lives and simply refuse to soften. 

   I knew next to nothing about the plot of this novel before diving in, and after reading it I can say that that’s because there’s no way to cohesively explain this plot without giving you a blow by blow of exact scenes. Just when you think you know what’s happening something comes out of left field and throws you off your game. It was invigorating, never really knowing what to expect, especially when every twist was an exciting one. 

   I’ll admit I was very much a fan of the romances in this book, including the love triangle. It’s become increasingly more common for LGBT characters to have love interests, but it’s still fairly unheard of for them to be involved in love triangles and I loved that Kahler included something that’s so common in straight YA. I do wish there’d be love interests for the background characters, but it’s understandable since there wasn’t an exceptionally high cast. 

   It was no surprise to me that I enjoyed this book, so much so that I couldn’t help but add it to my top 10 of 2017. It was interesting and complex and i loved seeing an LGBT hero that’s actually allowed to be open about his sexuality, it’s a breath of fresh air in a world where most LGBT+ characters in fantasy novels are forced to hide. All in all I don’t have any serious complaints about Runebinder and I’m really excited to get my hands on the next one.
