The Winter Knight had a good concept but the author executed it really slowly like i had to wait quite a few pages for this murder and then like barely anything happened again until like just over 100pgs before the end. also tbh that hildie chick really did not interest me at all-the valkyrie thing was interesting but the way her POV was more than half her whining about not wanting to be a valkyrie anymore was not. i think really instead of giving her her own pov they could’ve just worked her into someone else’s. i did really like some of the narration and wayne/bert and the cover was really pretty(also vera/lancelot/gale poly ship ftw)
i gave it 3 stars on goodreads but maybe more like 3.4?

Runebinder by Alex R. Kahler hardcover, 400 pages, goodreads ★★★★★
I was extremely excited to pick up this book. Like, beyond words excited. Dystopia with fantasy elements and an LGBT hero? That’s a dream combination in my eyes. And Runebinder delivered, and kept delivering until I was reading to curl into a ball on the floor.
The magic system in this book is unlike anything I’ve come across and I love how simple it is without being boring. The world buildng in general is so interesting and unique that I just can’t get enough of it. Kahler has weaved a world similar to our own but still so delightfully different that every twist and turn is just as surprising as the last.
I, personally, adore the writing style used in this book. I can’t say it’s anything new or fresh, but it works really well with the story and the characters. Kahler clearly knows all of his characters very well, it’s displayed so well throughout the novel that you couldn’t miss it if you tried, and I really appreciate that in a story.
Dynamics can make or break a book for me, which means when I thoroughly enjoyed the relationships in Runebinder it just made the book that much better. Tenn is a character I can really relate to, and his relationships throughout the book brought him even more to life. As did the other character’s relationships with each other. There was a lot of variety in the different ways characters reacted to one another which isn’t always the case in dystopias, since a lot of characters are hardened by their difficult lives and simply refuse to soften.
I knew next to nothing about the plot of this novel before diving in, and after reading it I can say that that’s because there’s no way to cohesively explain this plot without giving you a blow by blow of exact scenes. Just when you think you know what’s happening something comes out of left field and throws you off your game. It was invigorating, never really knowing what to expect, especially when every twist was an exciting one.
I’ll admit I was very much a fan of the romances in this book, including the love triangle. It’s become increasingly more common for LGBT characters to have love interests, but it’s still fairly unheard of for them to be involved in love triangles and I loved that Kahler included something that’s so common in straight YA. I do wish there’d be love interests for the background characters, but it’s understandable since there wasn’t an exceptionally high cast.
It was no surprise to me that I enjoyed this book, so much so that I couldn’t help but add it to my top 10 of 2017. It was interesting and complex and i loved seeing an LGBT hero that’s actually allowed to be open about his sexuality, it’s a breath of fresh air in a world where most LGBT+ characters in fantasy novels are forced to hide. All in all I don’t have any serious complaints about Runebinder and I’m really excited to get my hands on the next one.

The Runebinder Chronicles: Runemaker by Alex R. Kahler The end is here. Tenn thought the spirits wanted him to find his fellow Hunter, Aidan, to win the war against the undead. But with Aidan on the brink of self-destruction and Tenn reeling from his lover’s spite, their fated convergence seems far from promising. Especially because Aidan no longer appears to be fighting for the living. With the Dark…

The Runebinder Chronicles
The Runebinder Chronicles is such an amazing trilogy! It made me cry, made me laugh, and I could relate to the characters. Plus the main character, Tenn, is gay! The MAIN CHARACTER!!

The holidays are right around the corner and with them comes lots of bustling and many opportunities to read by the fireplace. This month I tried to pick some newer books, since last month was primarily older ones, and I think I have a pretty good mix. Just like last month there is six books on this list.
The Glass Spare by Lauren DeStefano goodreads
I got this book in my first ever Owlcrate box and it’s just as well because I planned on purchasing it anyway! I think this book is going to be fantastic, I like Wil’s unique powers and from what I’ve read there’s some family dynamics at play and that’s something I can never get enough of.
Renegades by Marissa Meyer goodreads
I’ve had Cinder sitting on my shelf for a few months now waiting for me to pick it up. So why, you might ask, did I buy Renegades instead of just reading that? Well you see, The Lunar Chronicles are a beloved series to many people I’m friends with, and a part of me is afraid of reading something with such high expectations and finding it inadequate. So instead I picked up a different one of Meyer’s books, one I’m actually more excited to read than Cinder.
Runebinder by Alex R. Kahler goodreads
Rounding out the last of the new releases, Runebinder is another LGBT fantasy that I’m incredibly excited to read. All the reviews I’ve seen for this book so far have been glowing, but honestly I don’t think anything could dampen my enthusiasm. I actually ordered this book at the same time as Forest of a Thousand Lanterns and it’s been a struggle not to pick it up early!
Linger by Maggie Stiefvater goodreads
I finished Shiver in October and absolutely adored it, so I’m really looking forward to continue the story. Honestly I think this book would have to kill every character for it to truly disappoint me, and since that’s not likely this seems like a pretty obvious favourite.
Empire of Night by Kelley Armstrong goodreads
Kelley Armstrong is one of my favourite authors, I’ve been reading her books since I was 13 years old and I can’t imagine not continuing to do so. When I first found out that she was writing fantasy I was quite literally over the moon, and I’m unsure why it took me so long to finally pick the series up. Sea of Shadows is one of the best books I’ve read this year, and I can’t imagine Empire of Night will change that.
Fear by Michael Grant goodreads
Every time I read another book in that’s a part of this series I lose 10 years of my life just worrying about various characters and yet I continue to read them like they’re the air I breathe. The thing I’ve found is that they’re all so enthralling, they’re unputdownable in a way that you just can’t escape, but at this point I’m not sure I want to.
