Welcome to Heat 5 of our Battle Of The Bands Competition. April saw Goliath join Midnight Drive in the annual final and pick up some great prizes.

Heats 5 & 6 see us move into May and we have 8 more bands vying with each other for your votes.

2017 - 25 Music of the Year (That I bought in this year and listened so many times. / Alphabetically)

اسم(Ahmed) [New Jazz Imagination] (Umlaut / 2017) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JxP9BIdzOTU へんてこなミニマルフリージャズ。反復し続けながら、少しずつ展開を挟んで徐々に強靭なリズムに移行していく。 A unique minimal free jazz. While repeating, it gradually moves to a tough rhythm.

András Schiff [Ludvig van Beethoven: The Piano Sonatas, Vol. 8] (ECM / 2008) https://www.allmusic.com/album/beethoven-the-piano-sonatas-vol-8-mw0001876902 僕のなかのベートーヴェン像はもう少し厳格なものだったけれど、これは流麗。面白い解釈だと思った。 The image of Beethoven in me was a bit stricter. Schiff plays more elegant. It’s an interesting interpretation.

Arvo Pärt [Alina] (ECM / 1999) https://www.allmusic.com/album/arvo-p%C3%A4rt-alina-mw0001941058 静謐だけれど、無音を重視しているというよりは一つひとつの音の響きを聞かせる感じ。 Quiet music, though, the importance is not the silence but the tone of every single sound.

The Berlin Jazz Workshop Orchestra [Sib Langis] (FMP / 1981) https://destination-out.bandcamp.com/album/sib-langis 脱臼したようなジャズ/室内楽。Penguin Cafe OrchestraとErik Satieの間を行ったり来たりしているかのよう。 A dislocated jazz/chamber music. Sounds like back and forth between Penguin Cafe Orchestra and Erik Satie.

Carla Dal Forno [The Garden] (Blackest Ever Black / 2017) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Az0aYh1CXhQ Nicoのサイケデリックさにビートを足した感じ。X-TGの[Desertshore]も似ているけれど、こちらのほうが本家に近いかも。 Sounds like Nico. Similar to the “Desertshore(2012)” by X-TG, but this one may be closer to the original one.

Dave Brubeck Quartet [My Favorite Things] (Columbia / 1966) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o_GlNwLg3GE 彼の弾くジャズ/ピアノは正直嫌い。でも、これは例外。 I don’t like his playing style. But this is an exception.

Doug Watkins [Soulnik] (New Jazz (Prestige) / 1960) https://www.allmusic.com/album/soulnik-mw0000644708 ブルージーな印象を残していて、低音部を担当するチェロとベースの組み合わさり方が美しいジャズ。 A bluesy impression. This is a beautiful bass part of combining the bass and cello.

Eric Dolphy [Out To Lunch!] (Blue Note / 1964) https://www.allmusic.com/album/out-to-lunch-mw0000241418 小難しいイメージがあって聴かず嫌いしていたもの。ヴィブラフォンが良い味出していて好きだった。 I’d not been listening because of a difficult image. Especially I like the mood that vibraphone is making.

Globe Unity Orchestra [Improvisations] (Japo / 1978) https://www.allmusic.com/album/improvisations-1-4-mw0002114961 終始バリバリ激しく演奏し倒すという感じにはならず、抑揚に満ちた展開。 They don’t playing buzzy from beginning to end. Full of inflection through the album.

Grisha Shakhnes [leave/trace] (Glistening Examples / 2013) https://glisteningexamples.bandcamp.com/album/leave-trace レーベルを知るきっかけになりながら長らく買っていなかったもの。ゴリゴリしたテープコンクレート。 I found Glistening Examples and fell in love by this record, but I’ve been forgetting buying. I bought in this year. Sounds are quite fascinating…

Insub Meta Orchestra [13 & 27] (Another Timbre / 2017) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uQSjjWMtJQU 一つ一つの音のハーモニクスが美しい。静かに聞こえるけれども、これ以上何も足さなくていいと思えるくらい。 The harmonics of each sound is beautiful. Quite quiet but not to need to add any of sounds.

Jérôme Noetinger [Gloire A...] (Metamkine / 1992) (I can’t find the website we can listen) 暴力的なサウンドコラージュ。Aldo TambelliniやPeter Tscherkasskyの作品が頭に浮かんだ。 Harsh sonic collage. Aldo Tambellini and Peter Tscherkassky’s works came into my mind.

John Lurie [Down By Law/Variety] (Made To Measure / 1987) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=my1QCwe5N_4 俳優として本人も出演した作品のサントラなど。気だるくて粘り気の強いプレイ��タイルが良い感じ。 In “Down by Law”, I think his laziness play style also contributed for the film.

Kaffe Matthews, Andrea Neumann & Sachiko M [In Case Of Fire Take The Stairs] (Improvised Music From Japan / 2002) http://japanimprov.com/imjlabel/503/index.html 音と無音の対位法。静かに始まり、時間が経つにつれてほんのちょっとだけノイジーになる。 A Counterpoint of sound and silence. It starts silently, but as time goes by, it becomes a little bit noisy.

Krzysztof Komeda [Le Départ] (Volcano / 1999) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8WBxr_LO_ls イエジー・スコリモフスキ監督作品「出発」のサントラ。チープな音色が逆に良い味を出している。 Soundtracks for Jerzy Skolimowski’s film in 1967. Sound is very cheap but it makes a good mood.

Luigi Turra & Christopher McFall [tactile.surface] (Unfathomless / 2010) https://unfathomless.bandcamp.com/album/tactile-surface 物音が響いたり急にエレクトロニクスによる音圧高めな重低音に包まれたりと随所に技巧が凝らされている。 Techniques are everywhere. The boundary between environmental sounds and electronic sounds is always unclear.

Manfred Schulze Bläserquintett [Konzertino] (FMP / 1996) https://destination-out.bandcamp.com/album/konzertino サティがフリージャズにはまっていたらこんな作品を作ったのかな、なんて。一部の人は「これはジャズじゃない」って言いそう。 If Satie likes free jazz, he may make scores like this. It’s a strange music that some might think ‘This is not a jazz’.

Maya Dunietz & Tom White [Summer Crash] (Singing Knives / 2017) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tqWUX2NhME 粘り気のあるドライなテープの音と不気味な声やピアノ。この化学反応は禁断の果実。 The sticky and dry tape sound and eerie voice and piano. This chemical react is a forbidden fruit.

Nicolas Perret & Silvia Ploner [Nýey] (Unfathomless / 2015) https://unfathomless.bandcamp.com/album/n-ey こもった感じの音響と語りが混ざり合っていて、単なる環境音作品とは一線を画している気がする。 Voices and muffled environmental sounds are mixed. Not just a field recording. Abstract soundscape.

Prowls [S/T] (Neurec / 2007) http://www.art-into-life.com/product/857 恐ろしい音をみんなフードプロセッサーにかけたような���イブ作品。危険物��定。 Who let them stir all of horrible sounds with a food processor? Or Am I daydreaming? Anyway, it’s a hazardous material.

St. Vincent [Strange Mercy] (4AD / 2011) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itt0rALeHE8 今年出た[Masseduction]で彼女のことを知ったのだけど、こちらの方が雰囲気良かったので。 “Masseduction(2017)” made me know her. But I prefer this work. I love this guitar and synth sounds.

Trent Reznor & Atticus Ross [The Vietnam War] (The Null Corporation / 2017) https://www.allmusic.com/album/the-vietnam-war-a-film-by-ken-burns-lynn-novick-original-score-mw0003096437 個人的には[Add Violence]よりもこっちが好みだった。NINの[Ghosts I-IV]が好きな方にはぜひ薦めたい。 I prefer this than NIN’s “Add Violence(2017)”. Highly recommended if you like “Ghosts I-IV(2008)”.

Vainio/Väisänen/Vega [Endless] (Blast First / 1998) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnR2NoGbnGU Pan(a)sonicとSuicide。パンクと電子ノイズ。すなわち正義。以上。 Pan(a)sonic and Suicide. Punk met electric noises. Needless to say, it’s a justice. That’s all.

Walker, Harris, English [S/T] (Obsolete Future / 2017) https://lawrenceenglish.bandcamp.com/album/walker-harris-english [The Angelic Conversation]を聴いたことがあるせいか、Coilのような神秘主義的な雰囲気を感じた。 Full of a mystical atmosphere like Coil. Maybe because I’ve listen to “The Angelic Conversation(1994)”

Various Artists [Ftarri After Tomorrow] (Meenna / 2017) http://www.ftarri.com/meenna/882/index-j.html 最近の国内若手作家による作品。アカデミックな雰囲気がありつつも、どこかポップで楽しい。 Recent Japanese young artists’ electro-acoustic works. Not only academic but also pop.
