Spanish painters of the 19th century: José Rico Cejudo (died in 1939), Preparing the Rossary, 1922:
A regular participant in the National Exhibitions, where he was present until the end of the 1920s, in the 1906 competition he again won an honourable mention with La promesa ("The Promise"), as in 1895, 1899 and 1904, and repeated the award in 1908 with Retrato de don Ernesto Luque y Maraver ("Portrait of Don Ernesto Luque y Maraver"), a genre he did not deal with too often. Likewise, with Un asunto andaluz he won a single medal at the Fine Arts Exhibition held in Mexico in 1910 on the occasion of the Centenary of its Independence. Around this time he also painted various landscapes in the surroundings of Alcalá de Guadaíra, with a special predilection for the pine groves of Oromana, reproduced with rapid strokes and immersed in a peaceful atmosphere of silence and stillness where the human figure is barely present. On the other hand, the more realistic perception of the characters and their environment in his new popular themes is clearly exemplified in Futuros astros del toreo ("Future Bullfighting Stars"), a canvas featuring some young bullfighters, which he presented at the 1915 National Exhibition. The third medal he won in the official competition of 1920 with Floristas en el parque de María Luisa ("Florists in the María Luisa Park"), a work with a strong volume in the characters and a dynamic atmosphere full of light reflections, would only confirm the characteristics of his new style. The painting was also acquired by the State for 3,000 pesetas and destined for the Museo de Arte Moderno in Madrid. He was also interested in the search for unprecedented light reflections in canvases such as Altar Boys Preparing the Rosary, The Baptism of the Christening and The Rosary.

“…Catalina, born in the archbishop of Toledo’s palace at Alcalá de Henares on 16 December 1485, was an attentive child who spent much of her childhood in the newly conquered kingdom of Granada alongside her mother. To care for and educate Catalina and her siblings –Juan, Isabel, Juana, and María– Isabel selected members of her own itinerant court who were trained in Latin, religious conduct, and decorous behavior. These women, bound to the queen and her daughters by ties of service and friendship, combined sewing, embroidery, spinning, and weaving with intellectual and cultural pursuits. Andrés de Miranda and Beatriz Galindo supervised the formal education of Isabel’s daughter, but prominent noblewomen shaped the social and cultural education of the infantas.
They were expected to be clever, cultivated and sophisticated but not learned, and to be friends and servants and guides to the cultural norms of life at court. This relationship is not easily defined, with fluid boundaries dependent on personality and experience. Over the course of a lifetime, a noblewoman serving at court could be tutor, mentor, casual friend, close confidante, and as intimate as a favorite sister. The relationship was reciprocal, and not just in terms of monetary compensation. Both sides gained much: the royal family received vital loyal service from noblewomen who, in return met their future husbands from the pool of noblemen in service to the king and infante Juan.
Isabel and Fernando’s children received a rigorous education in an intellectual milieu where literacy was expected and cultural patronage the norm. Household accounts show that Isabel carefully selected and compensated her children’s tutors. Isabel’s servants, Andrés Miranda, a Dominican at the monastery of Santo Domingo (Burgos) and Beatriz Galindo (la Latina, “the Latinist”), were important in educating the children. At age six, Catalina began her studies with the Geraldino brothers. Alessandro accompanied Catalina to England in 1501, served as her confessor, and wrote De eruditione nobelium puellarum (On the Education of Noble Girls, 1501), at Isabel’s request. At age eleven, Catalina owned a breviary. At age twelve she was expected to exercise some discretion and had learned to supervise servants. Her studies included philosophy, literature, and religion, and music (she could play the clavichord and harp).
She could speak French, English, and German in addition to Castilian and Latin, prompting Beatriz Galindo to note that Catalina surpassed her mother in Latin learning. She studied late medieval ideas on virtue, justice, and proper queenly behavior and Christianized versions of Classical philosophy and natural science concerning medical understandings of the differences between the sexes. She would have read, or known of, works that dealt with the education of women such as Juan Rodriquez de la Camara’s El triunfo de las donas (The Triumph of Women, 1443), Alvaro de Luna’s El libro de las virtuosas y claras mugeres (The Book of Virtuous and Famous Women, 1446), Fray Martín Alonso de Córdoba’s Jardín de la nobles doncellas (The Garden of Noble Maidens, 1468), and Francesc Eiximenis’s manual for female instruction, the Carro de las donas (The Carriage of Women, 15th century), that may have been brought to court by Beatriz Galindo.
It is also likely that she read or knew of Juan de Flores’s Grisel and Mirabella, The Slander against Women, and The Defense of Ladies against Slanderers, works in the querelle des femmes genre that were dedicated to an unnamed female reader who may well have been Isabel. Isabel continued to pay annuities to Alessandro Geraldino (“maestro de las ynfantes”) until her death in 1504. The royal account books report expenditures for Catalina from 1478 to 1504 and include books, patronage, philanthropy, alms, as well as clothing and jewelry.
Some of the earliest records that mention Catalina are found in the household accounts of Isabel’s court and date from 1486, just after her birth. They record purchases of fabric for blankets and baby clothes, items for her baptism, shoes, food (honey, silver flatware, and glass cups and the expenses for moving the households of Catalina and her elder sisters Juana and María from Murcia to Valladolid (in 1488) and from Valladolid to Jaén (1489). Álvaro Fernández de Córdova Miralles counted 92 women at Isabel’s court, 61 who served the queen, with thirteen in the household of the infanta María, six for infanta Catalina. The Isabelline court appears to be typical of the age but much smaller than that of later queens, Isabel of Valois (178 women) and Mariana of Austria (over 300 women). Typical also of royal households is a significant number of noblewomen, many of whom were daughters of or married to the highest ranking nobles at court.
…More lowly were Catalina’s attendants –both men and women– caring for clothing, shoes, jewelry, and personal objects (such as books and toys), who were paid between 6,000 and 10,000 annually. What these sums do not show, however, is the marriage gifts (often monetary, but also valuable objects) bestowed by Isabel, which could be substantial and which men at court did not receive. Gentlewomen of modest rank, such as Francisca de Torres, Juana de Porras (called Porricas), and Nieta were paid 10,000, 6,000, and 8,000 maravedís on 20 October 1500. Little is known about these women beyond the fact that they were permanent members of the household. They were paid for expenses they incurred to move Catalina’s household from Ecija to Seville, and the same three were paid the same amounts again on 10 March 1501. Nieta may be just a nickname suggests that she is part of the intimate circle around Catalina but probably not a noblewoman.
At the bottom of the social hierarchy are a few slaves and a female dwarf who was first part of infanta María’s court at Lisbon, then came to Catalina’s court in Spain, and moved with her to England where she was known as the Spanish fool. But these women at court were valued highly and respected. After queen Isabel’s death, king Fernando ordered a final set of annuity payments to be paid to the women who had served in Isabel’s court, among them some of the loftiest and lowliest. On 10 June 1504, Blanca Manrique, Aldara de Portugal, Francisca de Ayala, Isabel (daughter of Costança), Marina Ruiz, and Inés (a slave) received payments of an unspecified amount.”

Joaquín Salvador Lavado Tejón, known worldwide by his pen name Quino, was born in Mendoza (Argentina) in 1932. Son of Andalusians who emigrated to Argentina in 1919, he discovered his vocation thanks to his uncle Joaquín Tejón, a painter and graphic designer, and began studying Fine Arts in his hometown when he was 13 years old. He abandoned his studies in 1949, determined to devote himself to comics and humour. He published his first page in 1954 and then went on to publish his cartoons, drawings and comic strips in newspapers and magazines in America and Europe. Following the 1976 military coup in Argentina, Quino was exiled in Milan. In 1990, he adopted Spanish nationality and has also resided alternately among Madrid, Paris, Milan and Buenos Aires.
Acknowledged as one of the leading cartoonists worldwide, Quino rose to fame with his Mafalda comic strips. This character was created for a failed advertising campaign, shortly after he published his first collection, Mundo Quino [The World of Quino] (1963). The first Mafalda comic strip was published on 29th September 1964 in the Argentine capital in the weekly magazine Primera Plana. In the Mafalda series, Quino reflected the world of adults as seen through the eyes of a group of children. The leading character was an inquisitive, intelligent, ironic, non-conformist girl, concerned with peace and human rights, who hates soup and loves the Beatles. The stories of this rebellious character, who reached Europe in 1969 thanks to Umberto Eco, who defined her as an “angry heroine”, have been translated into twenty-six languages and published in newspapers and magazines worldwide. Quino stopped drawing her in 1973. However, interest in Mafalda has continued right up to the present day, with re-editions of her books which have been adapted to the new technologies and are now available in e-book format.
After he stopped drawing Mafalda, Quino devoted himself to a more caustic, black humour targeted more towards an adult audience, which he has brought together in his collection of comic books. His most recent books include, among others, ¡Qué presente impresentable! [What an Unpresentable Present!] (2005), La aventura de comer [The Adventure of Eating] (2007) and ¿Quién anda ahí? [Who Goes There?] (2013). The last book is a reflection of current fears, through his last publications in the media, plus some unreleased publications and some of his few drawings in colour. During the last years before his retirement, Quino published mainly in the daily newspaper Clarín. He only drew Mafalda again for campaigns at the request of organizations such as UNICEF and the Argentine government. He did so after the failed 1987 coup against President Raúl Alfonsín when he drew Mafalda saying “Yes to democracy! Yes to justice! Yes to freedom! Yes to life!” In 1993, the Mafalda comic strips were adapted to cartoons and the character has participated in comic and humour competitions and festivals in many countries.
To mark Mafalda’s 50th “anniversary”, in 2014 the International Cartoon Festival of Angoulême (France) paid tribute to Quino and recreated the life-size environment of the character and her companions in the “Mafalda, a 50-year-old girl” exhibition. Another namesake memorial show shall be displayed throughout the year in several countries, including the UNESCO headquarters in Paris, to commemorate World Book Day. An “Illustrious Citizen” of Mendoza and Buenos Aires and Honorary Chair of Graphic Humour at the University of Alcalá de Henares, Quino has received numerous awards. These include the Cartoonist of the Year Award at the International Salon of Montreal (1982), two Konex Platinum Awards for Visual Arts-Graphic Humour (1982 and 1992) and a Konex Special Mention (2012), the Quevedos Latin American Prize for Graphic Humour (2000), Romics Oro Prize (Rome, 2011) and the Prince of Asturias award for Communication and humanities (2014).
Quino died on 30 September 2020 from a stroke, at the age of 88.

“I believe an important element in any creation of art is that you have to have an external impulse that is out of your control, and randomness is one of those elements that has been used in art a lot. I really like including this element in my work, because I believe if I'm only sourcing everything from inside of me, I can't get to really new places, so it needs an external factor.”
How much meaning can be extracted from just 125 letters? You may ask the same about the tossing of 3 coins, or in the cards pulled from a deck of 78.
The answer is plenty, if you are open to it.
Although I tend not to be the person to see literal divinity in consulting the I Ching or in the three-card spread of the Tarot, there is, to me, profound meaning to gain from how we humans look to the external world for answers to our internal struggles. Artist Mario Klingemann takes this mechanism humankind has inherited—seeking meaningful, timely patterns that can bring order to the entropy—and re-manifests it within an art installation whose tongue is, refreshingly, not quite firmly placed in its cheek.
I see playfulness in Klingemann's Appropriate Response, but no insincerity or ridicule towards our want of cosmic answers. Klingemann provides an opportunity for viewers to tickle the synchronistic pareidolia that we all have within us; to query la tendre indifférence du monde, and to receive a reply through the satisfying clickety-clack of a split-flap display.
The installation, housed at the Espacio SOLO private museum in Puerta de Alcalá, Madrid, works as follows: by a visitor kneeling at the prie-dieu, the GPT-2 neural network kicks into action, writing an original, random message on the display board, letter-by-letter, for the kneeling visitor to, as it were, take personally. The near-limitless wealth of English grammar wielded by an unsupervised language model turns out to be far more than what any dye-soaked icosahedron of a Magic 8-Ball can offer.
“This message is like a seed, and the viewer is the soil onto which it falls; and depending on the situation, the individual, it depends if the seed can flourish or if it just withers away. Without the viewer, it wouldn't be the piece.”
The world, by all measurable accounts, remains indifferent, but with this call and response the viewer has opportunity to walk away changed, as Jung described his patient with the scarab beetle, by a hole punctured in their rationalism, breaking the ice of intellectual resistance. Like other avenues often deemed mystic, the significance that I find in these coincidences, albeit forced a bit here via machine learning, comes from within. When we see the inner [subjective] world as the obverse to the outer [objective] world's reverse, we find the entirety changed, altered fully by the punctured hole of our recast perception. We can kneel before the flap board and knowingly provoke our recognition system with—depending, I suppose, on where one stands between realism and conceptuality—a false positive. This is a Begriff toy, much like the others I mentioned above; and like the best toys or games, Klingemann's Appropriate Response mimics an inescapable aspect of the human experience and allows us to investigate ourselves through it.

Saints of the Day – 6 August – Saints Justus and Pastor – The Holy Martyred Children of Alcala de Henares in Spain. (Died 304). Born c 295-297 in Spain and died by being scourged and beheaded in 304 at Alcala, Spain at ages 9 and 7. Patronage – Alcalá de Henares; Diocese of Alcalá and Madrid. Saints Justus and Pastor of Alcala were two brothers, who in their tender age overcame, with an heroic courage, the rage and power of Dacian, armed with all the instruments of cruelty.

“Do not fear death of the body nor the torments, little brother. Calmly receive the strike of the sword. The God who has seen fit to call us to such a great grace will give us the necessary strength to endure the sufferings that await us.”
During the Roman Empire, Christians were subjected to numerous persecutions, the harshest of which was perhaps the persecution of the emperor Diocletian in the fourth century. Instigated by Galerius, Diocletian promulgated the first edict against Christians on February 23 in the year 303 in Nicomedia, which demanded the destruction of Christian Churches and holy books and prohibited, that the faithful gather together, causing Christians, established in dignity to lose their honour. Following this first edict were three others – the second edict ordered the arrest and imprisonment of all clergy; the third granted the freedom of imprisoned clergy who apostatised and abandoned Christianity and harsh tortures for those who refused and the fourth obliged Christians to sacrifice to the gods of the Empire or suffer death.
To comply with the edict, the prefect Publius Dacianus was sent to Hispania (Spain) to cruelly and strictly enforce the imperial order. Christianity had taken strong root in Spain, clearly seen from the large number of Martyrs who shed their blood during the prefect’s rule. Among them are St Cucuphas, St Felix the “African,” St Pontius and St Narcissus, St Engracia and her eighteen companions, St Aquilina, etc.
Dacianus reached Complutum, today known as Alcalá de Henares (Madrid) in August of the year 304. Complutum was founded during the first century in the valley of Henares. The city had an ideal central location and enjoyed great prosperity during the third and fourth centuries. In this city, the “holy children,” Justus and Pastor, won the palm of Martyrdom. Very little has been written about them but we do know that they were from a good and holy Christian family. We also know the circumstances of their Martyrdom. The liturgy mentions that they were 7 and 9 years old respectively.
The most important part of the account of their Martyrdom has been passed on to us by tradition. When the imperial edict was made public in Complutum, the two brothers, Justus and Pastor, were at school. Stirred by an interior inspiration and an ardent desire to give their lives for Jesus Christ, they threw the slate tablets they used for writing on the ground and ran in haste to Dacianus’ residence with ardent hearts, ready to bear witness to their faith even to the point of Martyrdom. Despite their young age, the love of Christ had a profound effect in their hearts. They were unwilling to deny their God for anything in the world.

Upon seeing them so young, the doorkeepers thought they were playing but because the young boys insisted on seeing Dacianus, they were eventually taken to his presence. Before the prefect, they confessed firmly and with confidence that they were Christians and that they were unwilling to sacrifice to idols. In vain, the prefect tried to win them over with gifts and appeasements but seeing that he was unable to persuade them, he ordered them to be flogged with rods. The punishment was so severe that the two boys ended up bathed in blood.

The bodies of the children were battered but their souls were anchored in God and their fortitude left those who contemplated them in awe. Justus and Pastor knew well in whom they had believed (cf. 2 Tim 1:12) and desired nothing other than to find the One who first loved them and said, “Let the little children come to Me and do not prevent them” (Mt 19:14). Full of anger and fearful of the courageous example the holy children could give to Christians, Dacianus ordered the executioners to take them out of the city and behead them.

Centuries later, St Isidore of Seville wrote concerning their Martyrdom: “While they were taken to the place of torment, the two little lambs mutually encouraged one another. Justus, the youngest, fearful that his brother would falter, spoke to him thus, ‘Do not fear death of the body nor the torments, little brother. Calmly receive the strike of the sword. The God who has seen fit to call us to such a great grace will give us the necessary strength to endure the sufferings that await us.’ In reply, Pastor said, ‘You have spoken well, my brother. I will gladly accompany you in Martyrdom to gain the glory of this combat.’”
On a stone. in a field outside the city walls of Complutum, later known as Campo Loable or Laudable (Praiseworthy or Laudable Field), the children’s Martyrdom took place. Justus was the first to be beheaded followed by Pastor. Laudate pueri Dominum! Children, praise the Lord! The sacrifice was accomplished. The inhabitants of Complutum zealously guarded the place of the Martyrdom as well as the Martyrs’ remains and later built a chapel over their burial place to honour their memory.

Fearful of what the Muslims could do, in the year 760 St Urbez transferred the relics of the “holy children” to the hermitage of Santa Maria, a remote place in the Valley de Nocito. Later on, they were transferred to San Pedro el Viejo in Huesca.

The Urn containing the Relics of the Holy Children Martyrs, Sts Justus and Pastor
In 1567, St Pius V promulgated a papal bull in which he ordered part of the relics of Saints Justus and Pastor to be taken from Huesca to Alcalá de Henares, the city of their birth and Martyrdom. In November of that same year, Philip II and his son prince Charles sent letters addressed to the Bishop of Huesca so that the Pope’s order could be fulfilled. Thus, part of the relics of Saints Justus and Pastor were sent to the city of Alcalá de Henares where the “Holy Children” were considered patrons.
How did the children Justus and Pastor have the strength to face Martyrdom? God Himself vested them with fortitude and made them ready for battle against the forces of evil, “the grace of God led the conflict against Him and delivered the weak and set them as firm pillars, able through patience to endure all the wrath of the evil one. They joined battle with Him, undergoing all kinds of shame and injury. Regarding their great sufferings as little, they hastened to Christ, revealing truly that ‘the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed to us.'” (Eusebius of Caesarea-Bishop and Historian). The power of God is fully made manifest in weakness.

yeet. finished it. not my best in terms of style, but i can’t think about editing now, this had me literally shaking. maybe it would be best not to read this.
Laura is going to a POUM meeting today, and she promised to take me with her, if I do the dishes and hang all my clothes back up. That’s two things for one, it’s unfair, besides, she’s only taking me on a walk through the city, I’m not allowed to attend the actual meeting with her. It’s for grown-ups, but I’m almost ten - a month left - wonder if all this will be over by the time? Then, I’d get a really cool birthday gift - I’ll yet have to set my mind on one. Maybe, when the war is over, we will get a puppy. With white and brown spots. Maybe, in a couple years, Laura says they will let me attend. She says it’s not for little kids, but it’s so interesting when she comes back and tells what they were talking about. She always tells, and this time she will, too. I’ll ‘pester’ her until she tells.
I did the dishes after lunch - an awful lot - and spilled some water on my dress. This time, Laura didn't even say it looks like I wetted myself. She always does, that's so mean, one time I'll spill a glass of water on her, on purpose, so that it looks like she... but not today, she didn't even make me change, said it would dry out quickly. Weird. Good that she doesn't know about the clothes though. When she finds out I've put a huge stain on my white dress - I don't know where it came from...
We met Julia on the way. Julia is Laura's friend, she's eighteen too - twice as old as me. They were talking between themselves all the time - I felt left out and I didn't get to know what the meeting would be about - but the cool side is, Julia offered to take me to Retiro. She said something like that kids should be aired out, that it helps them worry less. Actually, Laura told me to head straight back home, and no wandering, and no telling anyone where they're meeting - shh, big secret, it's in Alcalá but I didn't say the number so this doesn't count, you'll never find it - but she gave in and let me go with Julia just for an hour at most. Those meetings are awful long, the last one lasted over three hours. I'd still love to go, though, I would pay attention!
I like Julia because she's kind and never says I'm 'pestering' her, and she gets me lemonade. Got one today, too. The ice-cream stall was gone, and another thing that's sad, she didn't want to play with me, at all, just sit and watch. Before, she did play chase, though it's not much fun really - I run faster, even in a dress, but of course in pants it's easier. She was awful quiet today. I told her not to be afraid, the war will be over soon, everyone says so. She agreed. I even asked her for a boat ride - you don't get the chance too often - Uncle Jaime used to give me and Auntie Alicia boat rides when they were still in love, that was so long ago - but Julia didn't have the money and anyway she's afraid to row the boat alone. If her boyfriend was here... What's there to be afraid of? I could try and row, too.
I think she was glad to have me off her hands when we met Carmen and her Gran. They were already going home though, and I promised Julia to get home on my own. It's just fifteen minutes by tram from here - well, I did get lost once or twice when I was little, but now, I bet I could get all around the city on my own. So we met Carmen and we made a bet, whether school is going to resume next year. Her Gran says it must - even if we have to relocate or something - it's so important for keeping our life together or whatever. Carmen doesn't think school is important at all. She says there won't be any school, I say there will. Not that I liked it particularly - I only like Maths, in fact - but they just can't cancel school altogether, it's impossible.
And then - because her Gran mentioned the possibility of relocating - I got a brilliant idea. I'll go and check if there's serious damage to the building - Carmen doesn't know, she wouldn't go near there in summer, and neither does her Gran - but I will find out and tell her tomorrow. And if it's badly damaged.. why, they'll put us somewhere else, indeed. Carmen is so stupid to believe we can be free from school just because she wants to.
Of course, I've promised Laura I won't get lost anywhere, but my school doesn't count. It's in Aguilón, a ten minutes walk from home - eight if you're running late and Mom's hurrying you up, she hates that - so it's not really like I'm doing anything wrong. Besides, she doesn't know about the stain yet.
And it's an adventure of sorts - I mean, since we're not supposed to be near the school buliding in summer, or Carmen thinks so - we still can. Oh, what an awful surprised face will she make tomorrow. So I went to explore. There's a garden around our school, even a corner where we planted our own apple trees - they're so small yet! - and it feels exciting when it's quiet, with no one running around. The school itself stands just as before, though. A few windows are shattered, that's all. I told her we will be going to class.
Then, there were sirens. They only sound bone-chilling but it means nothing. It's nearly always either too late or a false alarm, so they're no use, only scaring people. Uncle Jaime says you shouldn't be scared in the daytime - only prepared just in case - often, it only means they're checking if the system is working. At night, though, it's a different matter. I might have been just a teeny tiny bit scared, but if I'm hugging Laura, it goes away. She didn't give me a hug this morning.
I was prepared and I was really honestly on my way home when I heard them. A low, heavy howl. Everyone was running. There were screams. I ran too, bumped into someone. It's still awful hard to run quickly when you're wearing a dress. Then I saw them coming. Seven, flying in a V. They looked huge when they dived. Then, it was dark.
#no graphic details ofc but still#open at own risk#she's uhh... unusually clingy with L#who brushes her off saying later#i'll tell you everything of course and we can spend time together#if you make an effort at being a good girl#that's one thing. and also#she's absolutely chill. bc she knows if you fail to keep chill this will land you in trouble#but#she's picking up the vibes#that the adults aren't that chill in fact#they don't think they'll be okay#she can't find an explanation#and she does get scared in the end

8th Annual Cristal Connors Film Awards: BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
WINNER-
First Reformed, written by Paul Schrader
MICHAEL: But how can you sanction bringing a girl, for argument’s sake let’s say my child is a girl, a child full of hope and naive belief into a world...when that little girl grows to be a young woman and looks you in the eyes and says, ‘You knew all along, didn’t you?’ What do you say then?
TOLLER: You say what a father has always said. “I love you without qualification.” There is something growing inside Mary. Something as surely alive as a tree or an endangered species. Something filled with nature’s beauty. You speak of “sanctioning” this birth-- is it really your decision? Do you have that right? What does Mary think? It is her decision?
MICHAEL: Yes.
TOLLER: You’ve told her that? So it is not about the child. Or about Mary. It is about you and your despair. Your lack of hope. Throughout history humans have woken up in the dead of night, confronted by blackness. The sense that life is without meaning. The Suffering Unto Death.
MICHAEL: But this is something new.
TOLLER: Man’s achievements have brought him to a great place where life as we know it may cease in the foreseeable future. That is new. Our powerlessness. The blackness is not. Because we are people of science we like to solve things. We want rational responses. If humankind can’t overcome its immediate interests to ensure its survival, that requires a rational response. And that response is despair.
NOMINEES-
Happy as Lazzaro, written by Alice Rohrwacher
TANCREDI: Aren’t you afraid?
MARCHESA: Of what?
TANCREDI: That they’ll find out the truth.
MARCHESA: Human beings are like animals. Set them free and they realize they are slaves locked in their own misery. Right now, they suffer, but they don’t know.
TANCREDI: Lovely words.
MARCHESA: Look. See him? I exploit them, they exploit that poor man. It’s a chain reaction that can’t be stopped.
TANCREDI: Maybe he doesn’t take advantage of anyone.
MARCHESA: That’s impossible.
Hereditary, written by Ari Aster
MR. DAVIES: So does this make it more tragic or less tragic than if he did have a choice?
STUDENT #1: Less!
MR. DAVIES: Okay! Why?
STUDENT #1: Because!
MR. DAVIES: Care to weigh in, Peter?
PETER: ...about which part?
STUDENT #2: I think it’s more tragic, because if it’s all just inevitable, then that means the characters had no hope. They never had hope. They’re just like pawns in this horrible, hopeless machine.
Museo, written by Michael Alcalá and Alonso Ruizpalacios
“Juan thought about all the small gods he had hidden in his closet. Where are they now? Do they still listen to people’s prayers? Or did they leave them to their fate, like they did to us? Who were those men who crafted those gods? What was their life like? And what would they think about the way I live?”
Vox Lux, written by Brady Corbet
“At the advice of a producer, Celeste would change the lyric from ‘I’ to ‘we,’ and shortly thereafter the entire country fell in step with her sentiment. It was not her grief, it was theirs. No longer merely her experience, they reclaimed it as their own.”
HONORABLE MENTIONS: Valeska Grisebach- Western, Deborah Davis and Tony McNamara- The Favourite, Diablo Cody- Tully, Hirokazu Kore-eda- Shoplifters, and Jennifer Fox- The Tale

The final stop during our trip through Spain and this week's #throwbackthursday destination was its capital Madrid. A lot of debate around amongst locals and foreigners about which city is the best. Maybe it all originates from the two of the greatest soccer teams FC Barcelona and Real Madrid and their rivalry. I was never one to choose favourite cities so why start now.⠀ ⠀ Madrid with its beautiful Royal Palace and Almudena Cathedral, Gate of Alcalá, Plaza Mayor, Gran Vía and Puerta del Sol one of my most memorable experiences was attending a flamenco show at Las Tablas (@las_tablas). When talking about Spain, as I mentioned at the outset in Pamplona, this Country is full of passion.⠀ ⠀ The flamenco dancing was so powerful.⠀ So emotional.⠀ ⠀ The dancing, the storytelling, the strumming of the guitars, the singing - it all brought tears to Gordana's eyes. We were also fortunate enough to talk/interview with the owner who not only taught us all about flamenco, it's history and origins but she invited us back for another show with delicious Sangria on the house !! ⠀ I'll never forget it and I can't wait to return !!⠀ Click the link in my bio to watch the video/interview :) (at Madrid, Spain) https://www.instagram.com/p/CEZGkhBgDMu/?igshid=1ltby6rk8a35v
