museudearteantiga.pt
This depiction of St. Jerome is an innovative solution in the iconography and forms of pictorial representation of the patron saint of Christian humanists. The Doctor of the Church is represented here by the powerful, concentrated and synthetic image of an old sage, melancholically meditating on death and the contingency of the human condition and whose gaze reaches out to us and envelops us in this exercise in wisdom.
This masterpiece of the extremely gifted German Renaissance painter, created during his trip to the Low Countries in 1520-1521, was a gift from Dürer to Rui Fernandes de Almada, the secretary of the Portuguese factory house in Antwerp. At the Albertina Gallery (Vienna) and the Museen Dahlem (Berlin), there are four preparatory drawings for this composition.

Barnaby Edwards - Albrecht Dürer
(black and white ink on toned paper, 2023)
Today’s LGBTQ+ hero is the German Renaissance artist Albrecht Dürer (1471-1528). His letters to his friend (and possible partner) Willibald Pirckheimer reveal his dual lust for both serving girls and soldiers.
For more of Barnaby's drawings and paintings of LGBTQ+ heroes, click here.

This is a sketch out of my sketchbook, and I really enjoyed playing around with Faber Castells new line of markers, their Albrecht Durer watercolor markers. The only thing I found was that once they dried, they were pretty waterproof, with the exception of a little bit of bleed. Combined with a water storing paintbrush, it made for a treat to paint.  The colors are rich, and when they’re fresh they’re easily diluted into a good wash and they combined well with each other. They work well if you want to use them as just a marker! I would suggest picking up a few to accentuate your artwork.

Albrecht Dürer
Tumblr media
German Renaissance painter, printmaker and theorist Albrecht Dürer was born on this day in 1471. Dürer established his reputation and influence across Europe very early on in his life due to his high-quality woodcut prints, and is credited with bringing the Renaissance to Northern Europe. He travelled to Italy a number of times, and was well-acquainted with many of the major Italian artists of his time, including Raphael and Leonardo da Vinci. In 1512, he was appointed court painter to Roman Emperor Maximilian I. This work, called Melencolia I, is one of the most well-known 'master engravings'. Despite being rife with symbolism, it has more or less eluded interpretation. The winged figure is thought to be an embodiment of melancholy, and around her we can see an hourglass, weighing scales, and other tools, as well as a magic square and astrological features. Competing theories suggest it alludes to alchemy, astrology, theology or even philosophy. We'd love to know: what do you see when you look at it? What do you think it could be about? Engraving on laid paper, 1514.

Albrecht Dürer: Self-portrait (Detail from the "Feast of the Rosary), 1506.
On the right side of the composition, the artist boldly portrays himself among the saints and patrons (including the Pope and the Emperor) holding a paper that displays the artist's name and the circumstances of the painting's creation: "Exegit quinque mestri / spatio Albertus / Durer Germanus MDVI / AD": "Albrecht Dürer from Germany painted this image within (only) five months in 1506, AD".
