If you haven’t heard of it yet, this is not a copy of the successful American Truck Simulator and Euro Truck Simulator games from the Prague studio SCS Software, but a mixture of survival and truck driver simulator. Summary: Dean Winchester’s been camp manager of a science research station on the Alaskan tundra for thirteen years. Dean likes his job; fixing the camp trucks, troubleshooting the generators, keeping clueless undergrads and NSF bigwigs from walking into grizzly bears or getting lost in snowstorms — it’s all in a day’s work. It keeps him pretty busy, and this year his brother Sam's visiting too, so he's even busier. So it’s really not any of Dean’s business when some weirdo antisocial ornithologist sets up a tent a few miles away, a dark-haired blue-eyed guy who’s doing a “very long-term" study on birds or wings or something, and who never, ever takes off his big lumpy backpack. But then the new guy starts dropping by camp for coffee and... well, he’s not officially part of camp; he's not Dean’s responsibility; he’s really not Dean’s problem at all, but when a strange blizzard comes sweeping in, Dean gets worried and goes to check. Thing is, Dean's spent years in the sweeping vistas of the Arctic. He knows all about the midnight sun and the northern lights, the ice caves and avalanches, the rough-and-ready Haul Road truckers and the even rougher-and-readier wild animals. But even so, what he finds is much more than he bargained for.

Test : Alaskan Road Truckers

Après une vingtaine d'heures de jeu sur Alaskan Road Truckers dans sa version PS5 je vous propose un test complet de cette simulation de routier plutôt originale.

Destination de rêve

Ah l'Alaska, c'est sans doute l'endroit où je voudrais le plus aller. Qui sait, peut-être un jour? En attendant ma PS5 m'a permis de m'y rendre et en plus d'y rouler en gros camion bien classe pour 26,99€!

Le titre est développé par Road Studio, des Polonais fasciné par les Etats-Unis puisqu'ils avaient en projet American Motorcycle Simulator par le passé mais qui n'est toujours pas sorti.

J'adore les camions et j'ai joué à pas mal de titres du genre avec en tête de gondole Euro Truck Simulator 2 et Mudrunner, deux titres différents qui sont des références dans le milieu de la simulation routière.

Petits moyens mais grosses idées

On est en face d'une petite production avec peu de moyens et ça se ressent niveau réalisation. Cependant, j'ai vu bien pire en simulation et les effets d'éclairage ainsi que les détails sur la carrosserie font leur petit effet. Adepte du 60 FPS passez votre chemin car on en est loin malgré la faiblesse graphique du titre.

La version PC est elle plus jolie mais sur console on est pas au niveau. J'en profite pour préciser que le jeu est aussi disponible sur Xbox. Malgré cela je dois avouer qu'on est bel et bien en Alaska et que la carte d'une taille correcte retranscrit bien les différents panoramas avec immenses forêts, routes de graviers, petits villages avec maisons en bois et même faune sauvage.

Ce n'est pas super joli mais les développeurs ont tenté d'insuffler une âme à leur jeu par des petits détails qui font plaisir. Les camions sont en revanche très soigné et encore heureux je dois dire. Le titre vient de fêter sa première année et on peut dire que ça a été mouvementé avec de nombreux bugs à la sortie et même des sauvegardes qui sautaient pour nombre de joueurs.

Les versions consoles n'ont pas été épargnées mais Road Studio a fait de nombreuses mises à jour pour corriger le tir et enrichir l'expérience. J'ai noté de mon côté des bugs d'affichage mais aucun problème de sauvegarde ni de problème de gameplay.

Entre arcade et simulation

D'ailleurs, parlons-en du gameplay car la conduite est sympathique même à la manette et plutôt complète. On est pas au niveau d'un Euro Truck Simulator mais les sensations sont bonnes et on a cette impression de conduire un mastodonte sur roues. Le comportement des remorques en revanche est plus discutable surtout à haute vitesse où elles ont tendance à se balancer dans les virages sans que cela ne se répercute vraiment sur la conduite. C'est une conduite plus arcade que simulation même si le jeu fait tout pour nous immerger via d'autres aspects.

Qui dit Alaska dit grand froid et pour le coup Road Studio n'ont pas fait les choses à moitié. Outre le fait que le jeu propose les saisons ce qui au passage est unique dans le genre, il y a donc un moment où vous devrez faire face aux difficultés de l'hiver. Il faudra donc chouchouter votre camion, le réparer dans un atelier ou faire les réparations vous même. Autre particularité vous pourrez descendre de votre tracteur et vous balader en vue à la première personne pour faire des emplettes, ouvrir le capot et directement mettre les mains dans le cambouis. Oui c'est génial et encore une fois unique.

Polyvalence

Vous grimperez de niveaux dans trois arbres de compétences distincts à savoir personnalité, camionnage et réparation. Avec ces points vous débloquerez des bonus vous permettant d'obtenir de nouveaux permis pour des livraisons plus difficiles, l'accès à des camions plus puissants mais aussi à la possibilité d'améliorer votre quartier général et d'effectuer vos réparations vous même.

Autant vous dire que l'hiver vous demandera une bonne préparation avec l'achat des pièces adéquats en cas de panne et de vivres pour éviter la mort. Si il est possible d'appeler l'assistance notez que cela vous coûtera cher et que si vous mourrez de froid ou de faim vous serez aussi pénalisé. Vous disposez de trois noyaux, la santé, la faim et la fatigue.

Outre votre camion il faudra aussi gérer votre avatar sélectionnable en début de partie. D'où l'intérêt d'acheter des vêtements chauds l'hiver, de posséder des anti-douleurs au cas ou et bien sûr d'acheter de la nourriture que vous pourrez cuire dans le micro-onde de votre camion.

Vive l'hiver

C'est vraiment la saison qui donne du peps au jeu avec un comportement glissant nécessitant d'utiliser les chaînes et le différentiel pour rouler plus confortablement. Sur un plan visuel c'est aussi la saison la plus réussie avec un manteau de neige du plus bel effet et une visibilité réduite plutôt éprouvante.

Ce n'est pas tout car l'Alaska est un monde sauvage et il y aura parfois des imprévus sur la route. Un éboulement de neige ou un arbre tombé à cause du vent sera votre quotidien. Il est possible de couper les arbres si vous possédez une tronçonneuse et la compétence qui va avec. Il y a toujours moyen de s'en sortir en analysant la situation je vous rassure.

Un travail éprouvant

Il y a énormément de remorques différentes que vous débloquerez via l'acquisition des différents permis. Vous disposez bien sûr de temps pour livrer et il faut faire attention de ne pas abimer la marchandise. Une fois arrivé à destination vous disposez de plusieurs possibilités pour vous garer mais vous placer en marche arrière remorque bien droite sur le marqueur vous octroiera cinq étoiles et donc un bonus d'argent supplémentaire.

Pour charger et décharger vous devrez descendre de votre monture pour lever les vérins de la remorque puis détacher les câbles qui maintiennent la remorque au camion pour enfin détacher votre chargement. Il y a aussi un système de réputation et certains trajets vous demanderont de l'endurance car ils peuvent demander d'avaler plus de mille miles.

Make money

Sans oublier l'argent qui reste le point névralgique pour assurer la maintenance de vos camions et aussi de vos besoins vitaux. Autant vous dire que c'est difficile d'être rentable au début et c'est tant mieux car cet aspect assure aussi une bonne durée de vie au jeu. De plus l'aménagement de votre quartier général vous demandera aussi beaucoup d'argent et comme la personnalisation des camions est poussée il y a aussi de quoi dépenser de ce côté.

Après vingt heures de jeu je n'ai pas encore parcouru la carte entièrement et je ne possède pas l'intégralité des permis. Je n'ai que deux camions et un prêt à rembourser. Dans votre base vous disposez d'un ordinateur permettant d'améliorer votre base, de contracter un prêt bancaire et d'acheter de nouveaux camions. Bien sûr Road Studio n'ont pas les droits des marques mais on reconnaît bien les modèles Kenworth par exemple. D'ailleurs il y a plusieurs tracteurs disponibles disposant chacun de plusieurs gammes ce qui offre un vrai choix. En revanche j'aurais aimé plus de possibilités sur la partie gestion d'entreprise avec la possibilité par exemple d'embaucher des chauffeurs histoire de ne pas laisser nos véhicules sur un parking. Peut-être que cela viendra plus tard ce qui serait un gros plus pour le jeu.

Du contenu supplémentaire

Road Studio ont fait des ajouts gratuits sympathiques avec la route de glace qui est un vrai défi et un mode carte postale vous permettant de prendre des endroits iconiques de l'Alaska en photo pour engranger de l'expérience. Sans oublier l'ajout de camions exotiques à acheter. La bande-son est plutôt bonne avec de bons bruitages notamment pour les camions. Il y a aussi une radio de disponible afin d'égayer vos trajets.

Pour conclure, j'ai adoré mes vingt heures sur Alaskan Road Truckers. Alors oui ce n'est pas parfait, oui il ne faut pas être trop exigeant sur le plan technique et oui ça aurait du être peaufiné avant de sortir. Cependant l'expérience est unique avec une envie de proposer autre chose dans le domaine de la simulation routière. Si j'ose dire on est à mi chemin entre Euro Truck et Mudrunner sans atteindre leur niveau et c'est pour cela que j'aime ce jeu.
