Do you know of any specific resources on the musical instruments that might be present in the Avatar world? Especially from the water tribe(s)?
I'll probably elaborate on Air Nomad, Earth Kingdom and Fire Nation instruments in later posts, but I can go over some possible Water Tribe instruments right now.
Char's Analysis of Possible Water Tribe Instruments is fantastic!
Some notable instruments from Inuit, Inupiat, and Yupik peoples:
Kelutviaq / Qelutviaq - Yupik single-string lute
Tautirut - Canadian Inuit Fiddle
Qilaut / Qilaat / Cauyaq - A handheld frame drum used by Inuit, Inupiat, and Yupik peoples across that Arctic. It is played with a stick called a qatuk. It's made of caribou skin and wood.
Drawing on the Siberian influences in the Northern Water Tribe, we have...
Mouth Harp / Jaw Harp - A small instrument that's held in the mouth and played through tapping and plucking. Its origins are from Northern Siberia, but it's also played by some Inuit peoples.
Chukchi Flute - A three-piped flute of the Chukchi people.
There's also Mongolian, Central Asian, First Nation, and Alaska Native instruments, if you're willing to expand beyond Arctic music:
Mongolian Instruments
Central Asian Instruments
Khakas Instruments
Indigenous music of North America - Wikipedia
Like what I’m doing? Tips always appreciated, never expected. ^_^

As a native English speaker myself, who wants to learn Spanish as a secondary language, do you have any recommendations regarding Spanish- singing music artists or Spanish songs? I’ll take anything from folk rhymes to an entire pop album! Also: thank you so much for all the knowledge you provide! I hope you’re doing excellent! 💗✨
I'm not particularly up on music these days so I'll have to ask for followers
The artists I know of are Shakira, Juanes, Alaska, Lucero, La Oreja de Van Gogh, Maná, and Los Prisioneros
...And a whole lot of Disney youtube songs with the lyrics in Spanish for me personally
I need to look through my playlists because I have more songs collected than actual artists but I don't know them all off the top of my head

What a show, what a journey, what a town! I started watching Northern Exposure during the week between starting the job of my dreams and leaving a really bad workplace (one that I was desperate to go to because I was fleeing a REALLY bad workplace) in March of 2022. I finished the series tonight, the eve of my departure for my adventure from Twin Peaks to Cicely. I have followed along with the Northern OverExposure Podcast (catch me on their episode on Season 6 Episode 4 The Letter) over this year plus and have had a wonderful time live tweeting my thoughts and interacting with Northern Exposure fans and the hosts of that show, Charles and Lee. I've lost track of how many people have responded to me watching the show, irl, with, "Oh I loved that show!!" My parents (My dad said, "you don't remember when we watched that?" and I had to remind him I wasn't alive yet), my boss (who "stopped watching when Joel left"-spoiler!), my coworkers (and their siblings), my friends (who are accompanying me to the Informal Moosefest this weekend in Roslyn). I've also been able to share the show with my loved ones (showing it to my step-sisters in Montreal and showing it to my sister- the episode where Maggie turns 30 (season 4 episode 1)-a month before my sister turned 30). The Thanksgiving episode (season 4 episode 8) will be a yearly rewatch for me and my family now (my aunt was willing to watch it twice this past year). This show is never ever predictable, but always self reflective, and incredibly quirky (dream sequences or a gimmick abound). The characters are beautiful and the storylines range from profound to bonkers. The representation for Native people, gay people, hypochondriacs, strong women, hip girlies, manic pixie dream boys, and wise, as well as unwise, adults, was crucial for the time it aired on TV (maybe not all of those archetypes really needed the representation but once I started thinking about this ensemble cast I couldn't stop). I will always love the Zydeco style theme for something set so far away from the home of that music, but that's what the show is about. Finding joy in a place that maybe isn't your home. I haven't even gotten to my ideal man, love of my life, absolute smart cute sweetie boy himself, Chris Stevens. I was already a John Corbett fan but his monologues as Chris sent me over the moon. Where can I get me one of those? And if I'm getting into character specifics I also need to mention Ruth-Anne and Ed's relationship. Ed interacting with anybody (whether on a spiritual plane (One Who Waits) or a physical person (Shelly)), is a great time, but him and Ruth-Anne just have such a beautiful connection. I'm looking forward to dancing on Ruth-Anne's grave this weekend. Also I loved Mike Monroe (sue me, HE'S A LAWYER!). This show did so much with what seemed like so little. It's a straight forward premise, as it's known to Spanish speakers, "Doctor en Alaska", but what unfolded to me was much much bigger. I can't say too much about the short comings of season 6, but I never hated it. Characters acted a little more strange than usual and things felt different, maybe sometimes a little stale, but it's still the same town. It's funny to me how a fictional place, so far away, can remind me of my own hometown and state. There really is something universal in the particular. I have loved (mostly) every minute of watching this show (Maurice took the longest to grow on me) and shouting my reaction to it into the void only to have others respond (thoughtfully and with enthusiasm). It's really indicative of where I'm at in my life and I feel incredibly lucky. So thank you, everyone involved in the making of Northern Exposure, the Northern OverExposure Podcast, and anyone who lets this town into their heart. You'll find me, and many others, there. Happy Moosefest everyone, antlers up! <3

Townes Van Zandt
Steve Earle described him as the greatest songwriter who ever lived, and his influence was felt by many other artists, including Emmylou Harris, Nanci Griffith and Lyle Lovett. Bob Dylan refers to this Texas native as his favorite songwriter. He wrote hundreds of haunting songs that have been widely recorded, perhaps most notably “Pancho and Lefty” which was a number one hit for Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard in 1983.
Since his death, Van Zandt’s legend has grown exponentially. With two biographies and a documentary released in the last decade, his legend will continue to grow as new generations have access to his music — because more than a handful of Townes’s songs are incontestably great.
"In America when I play, I’m a folksinger — just me and my guitar. And when they’re recorded in America they’re usually recorded country, like Willie and Emmylou. In Europe they’re usually rock. They’re turned into rock or grunge. But they don’t fit into a category. I don’t write for anyone. It’s between me and the spirits. And the people on Earth. Every recording ever of mine, a cover, I’ve loved. Well, a person or a band, whatever they may be, takes a song of mine, learns it and does it their way: I mean you can’t fault that. There’s Eskimos around the campfire in Alaska passing around the guitar and maybe one of them will play “Pancho and Lefty” or something, and that’s what I’m supposed to be doing."

ALSO since i'm already talking, here are my final thoughts on td: night country if anyone still cares lmao. @highcampandmisdemeanors my apologies, this is basically a copy paste of what i wrote to you bc i'm lazy :D spoilers ahead:
- overall I liked s4 quite a lot, but I think s1 references hurt it as they made no sense in that place, and had only created plotholes (what were annie and the tsalal guy doing in that rv van if the TD universe taught us those dolls/etc. are associated with child abuse!!! why the writings/symbols on the walls!!!), what did fiona shaw's character know about the spiral and why didn't navarro question her immediately, etc. there was a disconnect between what we've been taught that imagery meant, and what was actually going down in that show. and the time is a flat circle quote just felt cheap. :/
- i always love magical realism/complex ontology of a world that goes beyond observable phenomena (y'all know how i love twin peaks), so i didn't mind that, and nic p dabbled in it himself (even though he always had a safe umbrella of a 'realism' to provide a possible explanation for that - rust's past in s1, characters approaching death in s2, wayne's sickness in s3), so whoever says those themes didn't fit the TD universe is wrong
- having said that, the execution of that wasn't great - the sound design was too overwhelming most of the time, hitting you over the head with the whispery noises and chants in a native language, and the way the apparitions spoke was sooo cringe 😭 it also kind of felt like the creators weren't sure till the very end if they actually wanted to Commit to them or not, although i think it ultimately works in show's favour - maybe navarro did simply inherit whatever her mother and sister had, and it's just a mental health issue (which is how nic p would have left things off as well lmao)
- ultimately what i loved the most about this season were the things that pretty much had nothing to do with the TD universe, namely the relationships!!!! whatever navarro and danvers had going on was super compelling, so was danvers' relationship with prior and her daughter, or navarro's with her sister and fiona shaw's character, and obviously prior's with his father, and so on
- basically, maybe this show actually shouldn't have been a TD show at all, but i did enjoy it overall, and i liked the ultimate explanation behind the mystery, i thought that fit the TD 'verse quite well!, especially the s3 finale. the acting was GREAT on all fronts, so was the arctic setting. the only nod to s1 i would've left was rust's dad thing, i thought that was cool, and i disagree that it retcons anything in s1, having freshly rewatched it (sure the agents say at some point that no one had seen rust's dad in 30 years lmao but who is 'no one'. cops? authorities? girl this is alaska <3 and rust might have used a trip excuse just as an alibi, sure, but so what?)
- music supervising/soundtrack choices were mostly tragic, i'm sorry to say. ): t bone burnett no one can get on your level
- bad cgi animals in shows must End
#can someone please remind me how to make a cut on mobile ☠️#long post#also i'm sorry i'm not tagging this i don't want anyone from the show's tag to find me rip

Queen Abigail's Daily Routine
If anyone's not familiar with her, she's one of my fictional characters - the founding queen of the Kingdom of Anchorage and Kodiak, an Orthodox kingdom in southwest Alaska ruled by a Native American dynasty. This is her daily routine; I've been planning something like this for a while and decided to do it today.
5:45-6:00: Wake up, get dressed by her maid (this is an example of the kind of thing she wears) and say her morning prayers.
6:00-6:15: Attend the First Hour. This is performed by her father-confessor Fr. Philip Hansen, and anyone else willing to get up at that time is allowed to attend.
6:15-6:45: Shower and get dressed again afterwards.
6:45-7:00: Do some reading, watching or listening to music. Her favourites in those categories are respectively the Church Fathers (especially St. Athanasius), Avatar: The Last Airbender (her favourite show as a child, sped up to fit a 20-minute episode into 15 minutes), and 1970s rock (her energising music)
7:00-7:30: Breakfast, usually consisting of eggs, bacon, coffee and potatoes, with the eggs and bacon replaced with toast and fruit during fasts. This is held with the rest of the court, and while not formal "office hours" are a good time to talk to her in person.
7:30-8:30: Meeting with the cabinet to formally discuss policy and give them assignments for the day.
8:30-12:30: Office hours, spent either meeting with various people or responding to letters; which people and letters get through or are sent to other departments is the judgement of her secretaries, as well as how much time people get.
12:30-13:00: Lunch, consisting of a cup of tea, a bowl of soup, and some sandwiches. This is always eaten on her own, as a chance for quiet and a break.
13:00-18:00: Back to office hours.
18:00-19:00: Dinner. A social occasion as much as a meal, lasting as long as it does in order to give people the chance to talk to each other. The food here consists of a soup made of wild game, wild rice and other wild food (the wild game is removed on fast days), grilled and smoked fish (this option is, again, absent on fast days), bannock, bread rolls, salad and desserts made from wild berries.
19:00-19:15: Attend Povecheriye, held by Fr. Philip. Everyone at court is expected to attend this at least once a week.
19:15-22:00: Evening free time. In spring, this is spent shooting waterfowl, and in summer fishing from the lakes and rivers. In autumn and winter, there is a dedicated hunting day once a week, and this time is usually spent relaxing in some other way.
22:00-22:15: Say her evening prayers, get undressed by her maid and go to bed.
Tagging @roses-red-and-pink (who drew Abigail in her hunting dress) and @rebelnurse (who helped me design her hunting rifle for if you like this.

Bizhiki — Unbound (Jagjaguwar)
Just under 50,000 people or about 1% of Wisconsin’s people are native American, a relatively small percentage compared to Western states like Alaska and South Dakota. However, there’s a vibrant native American culture in the Badger State nonetheless, with tribes celebrating traditional music, dance, food and storytelling at pow wows held throughout the state. Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings of Bizhiki came out of that tradition, as did his adopted brother Rainey (though in the neighboring state of Minnesota). For this project, the two of them have connected with another rural Wisconsin musical tradition, the dreamy, expansive vocal pop of Bon Iver and its offshoots. Justin Vernon guests on one of Unbound’s songs, while his frequent collaborator Sean Carey is a full-fledged member of the group.
Bizhiki’s music combines traditional native American chant with an indie electronic palette of sounds. It’s a blend that might easily fail to gel, and yet it works fairly consistently. The best cuts put the Native American elements in the foreground. The least effective slip into generic chillwave territories, a slightly more exotic version of Washed Out. It’s hard to argue with the exultant drumming and trance-inducing vocals of “Rez News,” for instance, but “She’s All We Have,” while earnest in its ecological message, sounds too much like standard-issue electronic pop. “Nashke!” gets the balance best, beginning in whispery indie guitars and vocals and building to an ecstatic, keening climax. A cool Western-style verse — Carey, evidently — blossoms into echoing group chants, and the two sides meet, not seamlessly exactly, but in collaboration.
You can definitely make out Justin Vernon’s unearthly falsetto in “Gigawaabamin (Come Through)” though the liner notes are at pains to credit Native singer Mike Sullivan as “featured artist.” Here, a dance beat thunders, a jazz bass slithers, a indie rock chorus croons in mega-pop style, but the part that hits you hardest is the vibrating, trilling, old-time chant. You could think of Bizhiki as indie pop with a secret sauce, but it’s more than that. The Native American bits are the transcendent ones. They’re a doorway into another tradition, strange, compelling and beautiful.

The Faoladh where all along what I connected to being a werewolf. Now I definitely can say where I come from...
youtube
First of all, the sounds of celtic music. My mom feels strangely connected to Ireland too and listened to a ton of celtic music when I was a child. So I thought, that this was why I felt also a deeper connection to it. But It goes way deeper than I thought. Also my desire to protect (other and myself), and to only hunt when necessary. The thing with the Otherworld: In the book I wanted to write, I always forced myself into thinking that it has to happen in America (Alaska - Juneau because, big forests around) to be exact and so I also tried to force myself into the music of native americans. It just never felt right, even tho I felt or still feel very connected to their culture and beliefs. I always kept it in the back of my mind tho, to put it somewhere in Ireland, Scotland or England. I always listened to Celtic music while working on the story and this type of music makes me instantly shift into my werewolf form. No matter if it's 'Faun' (extremely the case!), 'Celtic Woman', 'Cara Dillon', Oonagh (even tho they mostly do songs in the elvish language, the style can be very similar and they also have a song together with celtic woman), or just random instrumental playlists.... All the pictures I've collected over the years of werewolves.... Why I had the desire that I must watch the movie Wolfwalkers in english even tho I could've watched it in german...
Oh also they way Faoladh's live! Apparently their homes were build into hills. This is also a thing I wanted to put into my story! similar looking like the houses the hobbits from lotr lived in. not exactly like it but similar. and the ones who didn't live in hills, build their homes underground so that the roofs where covered with grass- what basically made them to little hills lol
Aaaah... There's just so much sh!t adding up in my brain.
Man I wish I would've read more about it way earlier. But hey, figuring stuff out can take longer sometimes. But eventually you'll get your answers. and that's what just happened to me

Or, check out Áak’w Rock, an indigenous music festival in Juneau, Alaska! See past lineups for some fantastic native artists to discover. https://aakwrockfest.com/
Here’s some more native artists I’ve discovered through KNBA / by working in the music industry in Alaska. Some of them do more “fusion” than others, but they’re all worth checking out!
