Jen, I know everyone in the fandom goes nuts over Alex saying "I love him on purpose." but this never made any sense to me. Love is not something you plan and create a purpose for. It sweeps you. What does this mean because I don’t find it that profound? I just find it confusing.

Firstly, thank you for your patience with me on this. Yesterday was a long and tiring one and honestly I'm fed up with work right now so am doing something nice with my brain.

So.

Love, as a word, is both a noun and a verb. It is a thing (an abstract noun if you're interested) and it's a thing you do, you show. This is why love is also a choice.

You're right when you say that love isn't something you plan for, but you do plan with it. And love can have a purpose.

Henry talks about wanting Alex "the whole time" - he saw Alex pretty much across the room and had a reaction to him so visceral that he was determined to... well...

I thought, this is the most incredible thing I have ever seen, and I had better keep it a safe distance away from me. I thought, if someone like that ever loved me, it would set me on fire.

This is very much 'love at first sight' for Henry. But it isn't the love that Henry talks about in the V&A. It's not the love they share in the LA hotel room, the email exchanges, the photos they take to mark the courtship. The love that Henry feels for Alex at that point is not this love. It can't be.

Same for Alex: the way he felt about the prince in the magazine, the boy who kissed him in the garden, it's not the same love that puts him on a flight to London to storm Kensington. It's not the same love that gets him on a plane with Zahra after their outing.

Both of them were very much attracted to the other, wanted more from the other, but in between their hook ups they shared stories and bits of their lives, let the other in to their fears and their worries. They build a relationship on top of the physical desire.

So now we come to love.

As a noun, it is a thing they have for the other. It is the thing that settles in their heart and will drive them to do what they do to and for the other. And that is love as a verb. It is an action, a choice they make.

And it's a choice they could not make.

We saw it best with Henry: years ago he saw a boy at the Olympics and knew that the reaction he had towards him could be the best and more dangerous thing ever... and so Henry did nothing about it. He kept Alex at arm's length, didn't try to strike up a friendship so he could have something. He stepped so far back that Alex took umbridge with it and started the feud between them.

But once Henry did something, put love into action, it started another action and another one and another one and another one. Over and over the boys made choices: Alex choosing to accost Henry in the Red Room; choosing to go to the polo match; to Wimbledon; the night in LA; the storming of Kensington. Henry choosing to talk to Alex about his family and the expectations placed on him; telling him his truth as best he can in stories about princes and armour and rooms in the palace; the conversation in the V&A. Choosing to embrace the outing and own his truth.

They both have love as a noun, it is a thing that they have and feel for the other. And they both have love as a verb, it is something they do for and with the other.

And that is why Alex says he loves Henry on purpose. Because he is making the active choice to be with Henry, to forge a forever with him. To accept him for all that he is, dark corners and all. He's not trying to fix Henry, he's not trying to make the shadows go away. When he realises how dark Henry's moods are he is just there for him, with him. That night he just slots into place with Henry and isn't trying to tell him that it's all going to be OK.

Alex is choosing to love Henry. He isn't taking his feelings, pushing it down and doing nothing about it like Henry tried after the Olympics. You have to choose to do an action, and choosing to do nothing is also an action. So Alex flying across the Atlantic to be there with Henry, to support him after the email leak, is him making a very deliberate choice. He doesn't cut and run when it gets hard. He's not backing off. He is deliberately, on purpose, saying that Henry is his choice. That he is going to do something with this love (as a noun) that has taken up home in his chest.

Whether you find this profound is a personal thing, but for Alex it is profound. This is the moment he says something, out loud, that this is forever. He and Henry have talked around it, talked about it in quiet moments where they laid everything out after the V&A. But that was between them. This is something more, at least for Alex. This is him making it clear to Bea, the sister that Henry loves so much that he begged her to get sober so he wouldn't be alone. The sister who loves Henry so much that she did just that.

But it does mean something. Alex is taking his love-as-a-noun and turning it into love-as-a-verb and that is something he has to do on purpose. He has to want to do it, he has to choose to do it. And he does. On purpose.

"Hey, baby!" Henry exclaims as he passes by Alex without any other recognition. That wouldn't do, how dare he just ignores Alex with nothing more than a greeting.

He gets hold of his sleeve and drags him in front of him. When Henry is standing right in front of him, he takes hold of the lapels of his suit. He presses his lips deftly to his and Henry deepens the kiss.

Some part of his mind reminds him that they are standing in the middle of the corridor in the White House and anyone could walk past and see them kissing but the larger part of his mind just shushes it. The world and the White House staff for that matter could go fuck themselves for all he cares. He can make out with his beautiful boyfriend anywhere he likes. Isn't that the best part of being out? He personally thinks so.

"Al, we need to stop," Henry says in between kisses but then starts marking up his neck. Alex in return tugs at his blond hair and moans loudly.

Henry widens his eyes at him and captures his lips. That way he won't be calling anyone's attention.

"We should take this to your bedroom," Henry suggests, at last, no longer reasoning. Unfortunately, that is too far so Alex shoves them into the next bedroom he finds. It's one of the lesser-used ones, as far as he remembers it was last used three years ago when they had too many delegates over.

Henry for his part doesn't even bat an eyelid but rather hurls Alex on the mattress and wraps his body with his own. He takes hold of Alex's lips with his own again but this time he rhythms it with the grinding of his hips.

Henry attacks Alex neck next. Biting, marking and kissing endlessly on the area that extracts the most filthy sounds out of Alex's month. He is just unbuttoning the first button of Alex's shirt when all hell breaks loose.

Zahra enters the room with the sharp click of her high heels and a horrifying gasp.

"What the fuck are you both doing here?" she screeches at them as they start. By the time she is halfway into the room, they both are standing next to each other by the bed.

They both follow her orders gladly and escape the room. They are almost in front of Alex's room when they glance at each other and start laughing.

"No that was bloody terrifying. Now I know why you're so afraid of her."

"It was but now I have a better understanding of it." Neither of them comments on the fact that Alex did not deny being afraid of Zahra, and it's the truth. You would have to be God to not fear that woman, maybe even then you won't have an escape.

Coming Home

It's been years since either Alex or Henry has had a place that they can really settle into and call 'home'. Luckily, Henry has just bought the perfect one.

Kensington has never felt much like a place Henry lives. It feels like a hotel, a beautifully impersonal place to stay for a few nights before moving on. When Alex visits, he sees more of himself in the warren of rooms than he ever sees of Henry (though that may be due to their differing levels of cleanliness). Henry appears in the little things, in his journals and books and that damn copy of Le Monde that makes Alex feel all warm and fuzzy inside, but even the bedroom still feels like a hotel until Alex plops a bag into an ancient chair and lets his shoes fall haphazardly on the antique rug. He leaves things scattered around the room, and Henry asks if he's trying to spread his manifest destiny to his former ruler.

Alex doesn't say anything, and he certainly doesn't tell Henry that Bea occasionally sends him pictures of Henry wearing the sweatshirts and pajama pants he leaves behind. Those are saved in a special folder on his phone, and the way Henry looks in his clothes, everything a bit too short, is one of the best things he can imagine. Kensington may not look or feel like Henry's home, but it is still a place he can relax. It's a place where he can wear clothes that don't fit quite right but remind him that he's loved, wholly and unconditionally.

Alex especially doesn't tell Henry that he's printed a photo from Bea of Henry and David curled up in an antique chair, Henry wearing Alex's old lacrosse t-shirt and reading his copy of The Prisoner of Azkaban, or that the photo is framed on his desk. He just keeps leaving dirty clothes and battered paperbacks and color coded notes around Henry's rooms as if to scream that someone lives there. Someone lives in these staged rooms, and someone uses this museum furniture, and that someone is dating a queer brown American. Centuries of racist, homophobic monarchy can deal.

The White House bedroom is a bit more Alex's than Kensington is Henry's, but it's not really his, either. The White House is, after all, America's house. His family are essentially long-term renters, and no matter how much he tries to settle in, it's still a borrowed space. In four years, some other first child will come along. They'll find the message behind the wallpaper and the few unsealed windows, and maybe they'll paint over his walls like he painted over Sasha's. Hopefully they'll replace the ugly dog painting in the hallway.

He doesn't have quite the warren Henry does, and Henry doesn't settle into spaces the way Alex does in Kensington, but that doesn't mean he doesn't show up in the White House bedroom. He's in the V&A map hanging beside the congressional schedule and in the stacks of classics beside the Hamilton biography on Alex's bookshelf. When he visits, he doesn't stay in Alex's room, but Alex accumulates more and more little pieces of Henry every time. There's the Smithsonian guide book Henry bought and left, the tickets from their trip up the Washington Monument, and the 'emergency jumper' that Henry stores in Alex's closet and Alex absolutely does not study in. He is far too dignified to cozy up in his boyfriend's sweater and let the too-big sleeves flop over his hands (he doesn't know it, but Henry has a framed photo of him working in the jumper and his glasses, courtesy of June). Still, every time Alex hangs something on a wall or moves something in, it's with the knowledge that he will have to move it out in a few years.

The bedroom in the house in Texas that he'd move it to, though, isn't really Alex's anymore, either. It's the bedroom of the person Alex used to be, before he met the love of his life, found out he was bi, caused an international sex scandal, and learned to stop living ten years down the road. It's the bedroom of a boy who refused to look anywhere but dead ahead, and it shows. For years, there was a family photo on the desk, but he'd shoved it into the back of a drawer sometime during the divorce and never bothered to unearth it. There is a photo of him with June and Nora hanging on a bulletin board, but it's surrounded by old to do lists, tutoring schedules, an out of date calendar, and plans for 2016 campaign stops. The walls are decorated with memorabilia from Ravael Luna's and his mom's first campaigns, nearly covering a lacrosse team poster. It's the bedroom of a boy whose only goal was politics, now foreign and slightly dusty from disuse, and a part of Alex cringes every time he sees it. He wasn't happy when he lived in the room as it is now, not really.

Henry says it's good he doesn't fit the room anymore; it means he's grown in the four years since he lived there. That doesn't mean it's not strange to go home to a place that raised him, but no longer feels like home.

His dad's house out in California is the same way, though it never felt like home. Alex has a room there, but it's never really been his, no matter how many campaign posters he hung on the wall or lists he hid between the matress and the box spring. The lake house is the only place from his childhood that remains unchanged, and it's somewhere indescribably special to him, but it was never fully home. It's a place to relax and recharge, a great vacation home, but it's not somewhere he ever fully moved into.

In short, when Ellen Claremont-Diaz is re-elected, neither Alex nor Henry have a place that truly feels like home. Luckily, Henry's bought one. He's bought a four-bedroom Brooklyn brownstone where they can live together, and when he shows Alex the listing, Alex nearly smothers him in affection. They spend election night curled up in a bed that used to be Alex's, looking through floor plans and photos until they fall asleep.

When he crosses the threshold of the brownstone for the first time, Henry's hand in his, Alex can't help but imagine what it will be. They'll paint the walls and furnish it themselves, and everything in it will be theirs, al theirs. No more beds bought by dead people, no ugly paintings as political gestures, no jumping through hoops to put a nail in the wall and hang one picture. Henry tugs him forward, leading the way through the house they get to settle into together. Sure, another family may have lived here before, but it feels refreshingly new after their old homes. There are no ghosts in these walls, no centuries of previous owners to contend with. It's a new place for their new life together.

Hand in hand, they explore the living room, deciding where to put the TV and how big of a sectional they can fit in the space. They decide which bedroom to share, and Alex calls dibs on an office, and they plan out a decorating scheme for the guest bedroom that all of their friends and family will be comfortable with. They pick paint colors and enlist the help of June, Nora, and as many secret service and PPOs as they can, and by the end of the day, they're sleeping on the floor of a well-painted house.

The next morning, they take their regular fleet of security vans and spend the morning at Ikea, making final furniture decisions over meatballs and enlisting Cash and Amy to help carry boxes. The photo Henry takes of the living room two hours later shows Amy sitting on the couch she's built and Nora leaning against a bookshelf she put together while Alex and Cash are surrounded by a pile of boards and screws that should be an entertainment center. Eventually, a pizza dinner happens on the coffee table, with paper plates, the first card games in the new house, and lots of laughter. That night, they've moved their sleeping bags to a mattress that should go on a bed they haven't built yet.

They take the building and move in process slowly, interspersing it with walks around their new neighborhood and coffee runs to new shops nearby. They've dedicated the second day to their individual offices, but by noon, Alex has spent as much time in Henry's office as he has in his own, and the same is true for Henry. Which means that after lunch, they're dragging Henry's desk and bookshelf into Alex's office, re-organizing a bit, and planning another trip to Ikea to furnish a second guest room in what used to be Henry's office. By the third night, they're sleeping in a bed (though it doesn't have sheets yet), and when the moving van arrives on day four, the furniture is finished and it's beginning to feel like a home.

Day four is dedicated to all of the personal belongings left in their respective former homes. Cash and Amy help with the heavy lifting as Henry fills most of their bookshelves, leaving an anthology of queer fairy tales on the coffee table. Alex settles into the kitchen, hanging pots and pans from a rack on the ceiling and adding a command hook for his apron near his beloved coffee machine. Henry hangs a framed, pressed green carnation from Bea beside two of Alex's framed photos: one of a gay couple holding a sign that says "STAY OUT OF MY OUR BEDROOM" and another of a man whose jacket says "IF I DIE OF AIDS- FORGET BURIAL- JUST DROP MY BODY ON THE STEPS OF THE FDA". David finds his beds scattered around the house, one in nearly every room so he has a place to go if he needs it. By the fifth night in their new home, Alex walks into the bedroom to find Henry cuddled up and reading under the framed issue of Le Monde, wearing one of Alex's t-shirts with David dozing at his feet. He looks content and settled, and it is the most wonderful sight Alex can imagine.

Budgam, Indian-administered Kashmir - On August 5, 2019, India stripped Indian-administered Kashmir of its limited autonomy saying the unprecedented move was meant to integrate the Muslim-majority region into India to bring "development" and end violence.

For six months, the Himalayan region faced an internet blackout and security lockdown that adversely affected the Kashmir Valley's nearly eight million people. Thousands of politicians and activists were jailed, some of whom have since been released.

The region's economy was devastated while schools and colleges were shut, many of them emptied out to accommodate Indian soldiers.

Activists have accused Indian authorities of using draconian laws to stifle dissent and committing human rights abuses against Kashmiris.

One year on, there is palpable anger against the government's move to abrogate Article 370 of the constitution that granted the Muslim-majority region a measure of autonomy.

But the spokesperson of the governing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Indian-administered Kashmir, Ashok Koul, refuted such allegations and said Article 370 was removed to "bring progress and development in Kashmir".

'An Unfortunate Father'

The months of curfews last year meant transport services came to a halt in Kashmir. Nazir Ahmad Sheikh, who worked as a bus conductor for decades, was rendered jobless as hundreds of passenger vehicles were barred, creating a dire situation for the families dependent on the industry.

With a daily income of 300-500 rupees ($4-6.6), the 45-year-old from central Budgam district barely managed to make ends meet. He was the sole breadwinner for the family which includes his wife and three children aged 5-11. His oldest son is paralysed.

As businesses gradually started to reopen earlier this year, new restrictions were imposed due to the coronavirus pandemic, burying any remnants of hope for Sheikh, who had no option but to beg to be able to feed his family.

He sought his wife's permission. "I knew I had no other option," Sheikh told Al Jazeera.

"I was without work for so many months and I had to find a way to feed my family. I thought I had two options either to become a thief or to beg. I chose the latter," he told Al Jazeera at his house in Sholipora village in Budgam.

"I am an unfortunate father," he said with tears in his eyes. "I just wanted to educate my children and provide two meals to my family but in this situation, I am not able to do anything, I am feeling extremely helpless."

To save his family from shame, Sheikh decided to travel to the nearby district of Srinagar, the main city in the Kashmir region, to beg. Sheikh began sitting on roadsides where he would carry his young paralysed son in his arms.

According to the Kashmir Transporters Welfare Association, the lockdown affected nearly 150,000 people associated with the transport sector.

Kashmir Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KCCI), a local body of industrialists in the region, has put the preliminary amount of losses to $5.3bn from last year's lockdown. The traders' body also said about half a million jobs had been lost since August last year.

'A Long Wait'

All his life, Abdul Majeed has followed a dedicated routine - he would leave home in the morning to row his boat on the famous Dal lake where he would take tourists on joyrides.

During the last 12 months, Majeed stayed loyal to his routine but earned nothing as the security lockdown forced tourists from the picturesque region.

"Last year, on August 3, we were towing our boats and there were hundreds of tourists. But suddenly, police came and started taking away tourists to the airport," Majeed, 45, told Al Jazeera.

Every tourist was made to leave and hotels were emptied as the Indian government was preparing to impose the unprecedented lockdown.

"We watched helplessly whatever was happening. We could not question anyone."

One year on, tourists have not returned and that has paralysed the region's tourism industry which provided jobs to thousands of people.

Srinagar was turned into a ghost town immediately after the lockdown was announced. "We were in shock. That's the last time we had some work," Majeed told Al Jazeera.

Majeed has three children and a wife to feed. Without work, he feels frustrated and restless.

"From my childhood, I have been doing this work and I never felt this much anxiety," he said, adding that even at the peak of the armed rebellion against Indian rule in the 1990s, things were not as bad as it is now. "I avoid going to my home because I cannot afford to buy most things that my wife asks me to buy," he said. Majeed says he just tries to "find an escape".

"I am sure if this deprivation of our work continues we will all be facing psychiatric issues. It seems we will have to sell everything ultimately."

The tourism sector contributes nearly 6.92 percent to the region's gross domestic product (GDP), according to the government economic survey.

"In this situation, we do not even feel that we have anyone to listen us like a politician or a leader. We are feeling abandoned by everyone. There is no one to hear us," he said.

"We have completely submitted our fate to Allah."

Apples Turn Sour

The horticulture industry is one of the pillars of Kashmir's rural economy and apples remain the jewel of this industry. For Javaid Ahmad Ganai, an apple farmer, life has not been the same since last year.

A resident of south Kashmir's Tahab village, Ganai said farmers like him are "now taking loans and keeping their land on mortgage to run homes".

"Last year, after the lockdown, we were not able to sell our produce. Most of it either rotted on the trees or in the vehicles or fruit mandis," said the father of four.

Ganai said the government last year announced measures to help farmers sell their produce at "good rates" but on the ground, the reality was different.

"I sent my first 50 apple boxes and was paid money for them," Ganai said. "When I sent the second lot of 250 boxes, I was told that they could not find a buyer and I was never paid for it."

The 44-year-old said before the lockdown he used to earn at least $300 a month. "It would help me feed my family of six which includes my three sons, a daughter and wife. I could also fund for the education of my children," he said.

"The income is completely lost. The only way left is loans or selling my own property or trees to help feed my family. In the villages it is the same situation for everyone.

"It is just on the mercy of Allah that we are surviving. But I fear to think about the future. I don't even go to my orchards now, it causes anxiety."

Horticulture contributes nearly 5,000 crore rupees ($666,000) annually to the region's economy. Nearly 3.3 million people in the region are directly or indirectly associated with horticulture, according to government figures.

Last year's lockdown had coincided with the harvest season, with one farmer describing it as "one of the finest crops he has seen in his lifetime".

Ganai says they will have to bear the consequences of the lockdown for many years to come.

"We are not able to maintain our orchards. We could not take care of the trees like buying fertilisers on time because we had no resources," Ganai said. "This time 50 percent of the produce on trees has a disease and we can already see our economy for the next many years in shambles."

At home, Ganai said he has no answers to his children's demands. He said the only option available before him is taking loans but he fears that he might have to mortgage his land.

"In my village, more than 90 percent growers are taking loans. I know most of us cannot repay (the loans) and we will have to surrender our land," he said, referring to a general sentiment in the region that New Delhi wants to bring about demographic changes by allowing Indians to buy land there.

"I think it's a deliberate policy to push us towards giving away land. They know we are very helpless and they are making these loans easy for us."

Dark Life

At her home in Karimabad village in southern Pulwama district, Shaheena Akhtar, 37, has to nurse her two children: An 18-year-old daughter who is suffering from severe gastroenterology illness and her 20-year-old son who was hit with pellets on his right eye.

"This year has been the worst," Akhtar told Al Jazeera. "We have been hit by a storm one after another."

For most of her life, Akhtar has struggled with poverty. Her hope, however, was her elder son, Shariq Ahmad, whom she hoped would one day earn and support the family.

"I have only seen struggles in life. My hope was my son. He dropped out of studies three years ago when the situation in the family became difficult," she said.

Shariq worked as a carpenter and earned a meagre amount of 5,000 rupees ($67) every month. It was just enough to support him and the family.

Last month, Shariq was hit by a burst of pellets fired during a protest near his village. He was partially blinded. One of the earning hands for the family suddenly found himself confined to his room.

The use of pellets to disperse protesters has widely been condemned as hundreds of people, most of them teenage boys, have been blinded by the shots of iron projectiles to ward off demonstrators in recent years.

"I don't know whether to buy medicine for my kids, take them to the doctor or eat two meals," she said. "My husband is daily-wage worker and he is also out of work for a year."

"My son had his surgery last week but we were not able to get it done because it would cost 25,000 rupees ($334). This is an extra burden on us. It's not only the wound on my son's eyes, we are dead deep inside too, struggling for survival," she said.

Shut Schools

Asma Shakeel, 19, a resident of the main city of Srinagar, has a story of hope and an unending struggle. She says the situation in Kashmir "has made her tough and strengthened her will to move forward".

She could not attend school in the wake of the lockdown announced last August while the internet blackout meant she struggled to continue her studies.

Kashmiri students could not attend classes after August 2019, making it one of the longest pauses for the region's education sector and it has affected more than a million school-going students.

For months, she did self-study at home. When she would feel unable to concentrate due to the dire political situation, she says she would cry on a prayer mat.

"In Kashmir, what we see mostly is a shutdown after someone dies. And in such situations as a student it is hard to study at home," said Shakeel who has an older brother and a twin sister.

She remembers her last day at the school before lockdown when she was busy with her friends discussing upcoming school events.

For months last year, Shakeel struggled to prepare for the exams and apply for scholarships in colleges outside India, which has always been her dream though her parents were against the decision.

In the absence of the internet and phones last year, Shakeel described it as the "hardest time".

"My parents did not want me to apply for colleges outside. But I have been dreaming for it for years. I finally convinced them but the worst part during the communication blockade was that my teachers could not send me letters of recommendation," she said.

"Applying for scholarships was difficult. I knew I could not even ask a penny from my father whose business has already suffered a lot," she said, adding that she had to travel to the Indian capital New Delhi last year twice to apply for scholarships.

"I feared that my situation might keep me behind despite my hard work. I had made it a point last year to study day in and day out because I wanted to do it."

Schools and colleges in Kashmir were turned into barracks for additionally deployed paramilitary forces.

While authorities asked schools to opt for online education during the coronavirus pandemic, the students had little chances as the high-speed internet remains banned due to "security reasons".

The slow internet causes connectivity issues in e-learning and online classes, students say. According to the Private Schools Association in Kashmir only 20 percent of students in Kashmir who had fixed-line broadband at home could take "advantage of the online classes".

"We can't even study in the Zoom classes like students everywhere else. Our situation is not normal," Shakeel said. "I had to work on my own at home and seek help from my school teachers."

"We can't watch educational videos. It's extremely tough for students in Kashmir to stay without internet. In other places [outside Kashmir] at least students have access to high-speed internet and other facilities. They can order books online or could approach their teachers but for us everything has become very tough because of the place we come from," she said.

Despite the hardships, Shakeel is a success story. She passed her high schools exam in July this year with flying colours. She secured 98 percent in her grade 12 exams and topped in Kashmir.

Her scholarship bid also turned out to be successful. She got a full scholarship to study at Georgetown University in Qatar.

"I am trying to get best out of this situation. We are denied many rights but need to give our best in this suffocating environment," she told Al Jazeera.
