He's just a little guy with a death theme-park who's done terrible things.
I asked @thegaymer-c0mms-open to draw some fun mischievous chibi-ish Kaibs for me.

kaiba's like your oujia board is bullshit. your tarot cards are bullshit. if you try to read my palm i'll drop you off a bridge. check yourself before you check my birth chart. my dragon is speaking to me and i will do what she says. i don't need pentacles and candles to summon a god. i just call him like a dog and he arrives. there are things in the hearts of men more powerful than any god. that is my faith and i will hold to it

basically one of theeeeee critical nuances with kaiba is that he doesn't give a damn about any witchy or occult or new age spiritual systems at all like astrology, BUT that doesn't mean he's purely a rationalist or a materialist. he has an extremely intense and unwavering sense of faith in certain connections (his connection to BEWD in his BC duel against Isis, his connection to Atem in DSOD) and when the moment comes he surrenders himself completely to that faith in these connections. it's like he DOES have spiritual beliefs but they're completely personal and idiosyncratic (e.g., no one else can have this same bond with BEWD), and most importantly they are beliefs in mutually chosen connections that demand the best of him

The glacial sky threatens something between rain and snow. A streak of incandescence melts in the distance. [...] He marches through the school’s entryway out into the world, chilled air painting his skin. “Yugi.” Yugi turns and takes pause as his eyes meet Anzu waiting beside the doors. She wears chocolate fold-over boots and a jacket the color of a marshmallow, and perched shut on her shoulder is a brilliantly red umbrella. Her eyes look at him. They’re clear, blue, and lovely.

I don't ship whatever the hell YB/Atem is called except specifically for the single panel in monster world where upon meeting him YB refers to him as "my opposite number." bro you can't just outright verbally acknowledge someone as your direct narrative parallel two seconds into knowing him. that's too fast. at least buy him dinner (unsuccessfully try to murder him) first

When the Ishtar sibs show up in the last arc Rishid is as happy to visit with everyone as the other two are but when it comes to the rite itself he has almost nothing to say, despite both Ishizu and Marik being pretty active participants/facilitators. This is probably mostly that the writers don't care/his consistent characterization as quiet, but I think it's interesting if he's just decided this isn't his duty anymore. Rishid spent his entire life desperate to be A Real Tombkeeper, breaking himself to earn it and seething about how Marik stole the chance from him, and then by the time the ceremonial duel rolls around he's finally up and realized "Actually, I don't think I really want this job?" because he did not actually care that much about being a tombkeeper he just wanted a family and he got one
