Protopelma van Els et al., 2023 (new genus)
(An individual of Protopelma chrysolophum, photographed by Carlos Henrique Luz Nunes de Almeida, under CC BY 3.0)
Meaning of name: Protopelma = first sole [in Greek, referencing the closely related genus Neopelma]
Species included: P. chrysolophum (Serra do Mar tyrant-manakin, type species, previously in Neopelma)
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: Forest edges in southeastern Brazil
Notes: Protopelma is a genus of manakins, a group of small, primarily fruit-eating birds from the American tropics. The males of most manakins are brightly colored and use elaborate displays to attract mates. In Protopelma and its close relatives, however, males and females look alike and are both relatively drab in color.
The Serra do Mar tyrant-manakin has traditionally been classified in the genus Neopelma, and in fact was once considered a subspecies of Wied's tyrant-manakin (N. aurifrons). Although it certainly looks very similar to the members of Neopelma (differing mostly in having a generally smaller bill and distinct vocalizations), recent genetic studies have found that Neopelma proper is more closely related to the genus Tyranneutes. One way to revise the taxonomy of these birds to align with their phylogenetic relationships would be to lump Tyranneutes with Neopelma, but given that the species of Tyranneutes are highly distinctive due to their very small size and short tail feathers, the authors of a new paper prefer to keep them as a separate genus. A new genus is therefore needed for the Serra do Mar tyrant-manakin, and these authors coin the name Protopelma for this purpose.

Do Yemen’s Houthis have their eye on Marib?
Beirut, Lebanon – In the Red Sea, Yemen’s Houthi group continues to attack Israel-linked vessels in support of the people of Gaza, vowing to continue until Israel stops its relentless assault on the trapped population.
Internationally, the Red Sea attacks have grabbed headlines, not least for the dedication they demonstrate to the Palestinian cause and the Houthi willingness to take action.

“The Houthis aren’t going to stop what they’re doing, until the Israeli offensive in Gaza concludes,” Eurasia Group analyst Gregory Brew, told Al Jazeera.
The Houthi rebel group, which took over the capital Sanaa in 2014, is still facing off against an internationally recognised Yemeni government represented by a Presidential Leadership Council (PLC) of Saudi and Emirati-backed forces.
Domestically, analysts believe the Houthis have their eyes on completing their control of a strategic location that could drastically expand their influence in Yemen and bolster their ambitions as a regional actor: Marib.
A region rich in natural resources, primarily oil and gas, Marib is about two hours east of Sanaa and strategically close to other oil-producing regions controlled by UAE-backed militias that oppose the Houthis.
In recent weeks, Yemen analysts have seen reports of the Houthis building up a troop presence near Marib, although to what extent is hard to determine, and that smaller clashes in the area have continued.
Marib is “one of the most strategically important points in Yemen”, Yemen analyst Nick Brumfield told Al Jazeera.
“If the Houthis are really trying to take it … they’re not only in a good position to try to take Marib, they have a perfect in into Shabwah, and splitting southern Yemen in two.”
In 1990, the People’s Democratic Republic of Yemen (South Yemen) unified with the Yemen Arab Republic (North Yemen). While the country has been united since, some factions – including groups in the PLC – have strong secessionist ambitions for the south. Various tribes reign supreme in other areas.
Former Yemeni President Ali Abdullah Saleh once said governing Yemen was akin to “dancing on the heads of snakes”.
“The Marib front is one of the fronts that flares up from time to time since the UN truce was declared in April 2022,” Faozi al-Goidi, a junior visiting fellow at the Middle East Council on Global Affairs, told Al Jazeera.
The Houthis already control about 12 of 14 districts in the Marib governorate. But the two most important districts, al-Wadi and Marib City, are controlled by the al-Islah party, the Muslim Brotherhood affiliate that is part of the internationally recognised government. Al-Wadi, in particular, contains an important oilfield that the Houthis want to control, analysts said.
“The Houthis are eager, if not desperate, to capture Marib’s oil resources and revenues,” Hannah Porter, an independent Yemen analyst, told Al Jazeera. “If the Houthis take Marib, then they would effectively control every important area of northern Yemen and they would become much more powerful economically.”
It is unclear if the Houthis are planning another offensive on Marib. They have tried to take Marib repeatedly in recent years, but each effort was repelled with high numbers of losses for Houthi forces.
“Marib has been seen as a red line that the Houthis cannot be allowed to cross,” Porter said.
Not only would taking Marib expand the Houthis’ economic capabilities, it would level a crippling blow to the internationally recognised government.
“Should the Houthis succeed in fully capturing Marib, it will diminish the presence of the internationally recognised government and Islah to only a few small areas, namely Taiz and Wadi Hadramout,” said Raiman al-Hamdani, a Yemen researcher at the ARK Group.
“This will also erode the internationally recognised government’s credibility, negatively impacting their negotiation position as well as their local support.”
The Houthis and Saudi Arabia are currently engaging in ceasefire talks after a grinding civil war that lasted nearly a decade. Both have seemed committed to a deal, with analysts saying Houthis actions in the Red Sea and domestically are part of a strategy to negotiate better terms.
In recent months, the Houthis have benefitted from widespread recruitment campaigns thanks to the popularity of their attacks on vessels that they say are connected to Israel.
Analysts have said it is unclear if retaliatory US air raids or the attacks on US and UK warships have further drawn support to the Houthis, but the group has continued to turn out a crowd – in the millions, they claim – at Friday rallies. Many of these recruits joined to fight Israel, but the Houthis could use them to buttress their forces deployed in Yemen.
Meanwhile, the Saudis have grown weary of militarily confronting the Houthis after entering the Yemeni civil war on the side of the internationally recognized government in 2015. For now, the Saudis seem committed to ceasefire negotiations with the Houthis since a truce was announced in April 2022.
“Saudi Arabia is determined to achieve calm and ceasefire in Yemen, but the events of the Al-Aqsa Flood operation and the Gaza war delayed the signing process,” al-Goidi said.
While tension builds around a potential offensive in Marib, the Red Sea attacks have remained the international focal point.
Houthi forces announced on Wednesday that they fired several missiles at a US destroyer, the USS Greeley, and they would continue to attack US and UK warships in the Red Sea until the US-backed Israeli war on Gaza ends.
The US and UK launched a series of air raids at Houthi targets in January, but their attempts at deterrence have had little effect as the Houthis continue to disrupt shipping traffic passing through the Red Sea that they say is connected to Israel.
“Most of the targets hit by the American raids are targets that have been bombed repeatedly over the years of the war, so they are militarily useless,” said al-Goidi.
“The only benefit [for the US] may be that some of the raids stopped or, let us say, reduced some of the Houthi group’s ballistic attacks on ships, as ballistic missile platforms were bombed before they were launched.
“As the US Department of Defense says, the rest of the raids have no effect on the ground,” al-Goidi said. “If America escalates its attacks, it may restart the Yemen war from scratch.”

SBP OK with Gilas Men in PBA PH Cup
#PHnews: SBP OK with Gilas Men in PBA PH Cup
MANILA – The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has expressed openness to having the Gilas Pilipinas Men playing in the PBA Philippine Cup this season.
“We’re definitely open to the idea of playing in the PBA,” SBP president Al Panlilio said on Tuesday.
The PBA board of governors agreed Monday to invite the Gilas Men to the season-opening conference, which will begin on April 9.
Panlilio, who is also Meralco's representative to the PBA board, expressed his gratitude for the invite.
“The SBP is thankful to PBA commissioner Willie Marcial and the board of governors for extending an invitation to Gilas Pilipinas to join their competitions this season,” he said. “The PBA has been a valuable partner to the SBP and this invitation-only reasserts the league’s commitment to helping our Gilas Pilipinas program in whatever way they can.”
However, the final backbone of how the Gilas Men will play in the PBA Philippine Cup will only be discussed right after the team is done playing in the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.
“Once the team arrives from Doha, we will sit down with the PBA to discuss this matter further,” Panlilio said.
The setup is not new in the PBA.
The idea of having the national team playing in the PBA as a guest team began during the mid-'80s when the Danding Cojuangco-backed Nationals joined the league under the Northern Consolidated Cement (NCC) banner, eventually winning the 1985 Reinforced Conference championship.
The NCC remains the only all-amateur team to capture a title in Asia's premier professional basketball league.
The SBP also did the trick in 2011 when it brought in the original Gilas Men squad as a temporary replacement to the Red Bull franchise, which took a leave of absence that time, for the said conference, which has since been renamed the Commissioner's Cup.
While a six-foot-four height limit was set for imports then, the PBA allowed 6-foot-11 naturalized player Marcus Douthit to reinforce Gilas Men.
The team booked an outright semifinal seat in the Commissioner's Cup but was knocked out by Ginebra, featuring eventual Best Import winner Nate Brumfield, in the round.
Panlilio said having the national team as a guest squad in the PBA is beneficial for the players' chemistry.
“We know the value of being able to play games against PBA teams on a regular basis as evidenced by the exploits of Smart-Gilas 1 back in 2011,” he said. “Training is important for any team but you learn a lot about your teammates when you go up against strong opposition.” (PNA)

Economics of Urban Ag
Targeting high-value, niche markets or products, and adapting a social business model can help urban greenhouses derive profit.
Robin G. Brumfield and Charlotte Singer Produce Grower September 27, 2018 This article series is from the Resource Management in Commercial Greenhouse Production Multistate Research Project
Excerpt:
Regardless of the strength of their consumer base, the number of urban farms is still low due to the high costs that urban farmers face compared to rural farmers. Not only is the land more expensive, but also the limited plot size and probable contamination of the land with lead and toxins essentially necessitates the use of a greenhouse with high investment costs. Cost challenges that many urban greenhouse farmers face include securing funding, finding economies of scale, and facing high capital and operating costs.
The energy necessary to heat a greenhouse through the winter makes utility costs high, the most productive greenhouse technologies are expensive, and land is of much higher value in cities than in rural areas (Reisman, 2012). Not to mention, the initial infrastructure cost involved in building a greenhouse is much higher than the costs that farmers growing in a field face. The costs of urban greenhouses vary greatly depending on size and type. The construction of, for example, a hydroponic greenhouse entails costs for site preparation, construction, heating and cooling equipment, thermostats and controls, an irrigation system, a nutrient tank, and a growing system (Filion, et al., 2015).

Radinopsyche Whitney et al., 2021 (new genus)
(An individual of Radinopsyche sellowi, photographed by Hector Bottai, under CC BY-SA 4.0)
Meaning of name: Radinopsyche = slender being
Species included: R. sellowi (caatinga antwren, type species, previously in Herpsilochmus)
Age: Holocene (Meghalayan), extant
Where found: Woodlands and forests in eastern and central Brazil
Notes: Radinopsyche sellowi is a small antbird that was only recognized as a distinct species from the Bahia antwren (Herpsilochmus pileatus) in 2000. A new study finds that it is likely more closely related to the white-bearded antshrike (Biatas nigropectus) than to the species in the genus Herpsilochmus. Given that the caatinga antwren is easily distinguishable from the white-bearded antshrike in appearance, call, and ecology, the authors chose to coin the new genus Radinopsyche for it instead of reassigning it to the genus Biatas.

The next day, Lawrence and I decided to go see 89-year-old Bob Adkins in Hamlin, West Virginia. In a recent Goldenseal article, Bob had given his biography, including his family’s connection to the story of Milt’s murder. Since reading his narrative, I’d been anxious to ask him about Milt, as well as to confirm or disprove my suspicion that his father’s first wife Emma Jane Hager was the same…

A few weeks later, Brandon called Nellie Thompson in Wayne, West Virginia. Nellie reportedly had the picture of Milt Haley and Green McCoy.
“I don’t know if I have anything like that or not,” Nellie said, “but I do have an old letter from Green McCoy.”
What?
Almost hyperventilating, he asked her to read it over the telephone.
Nellie fetched it from somewhere in the house, said it was dated May…
