Charalá and Aketzali, like Magda and Saúl, are two of several ancient spirits in Uncertain Magia. While Magda and Saúl take inspiration from caimans and African mythology/Colombian folktales respectively, Charalá and Aketzali...

I'mma be real. Charalá and Aketzali are here because my sapphic self wanted a butch4butch couple in Huerto Viejo and after brainstorming with my friends I became obsessed with the idea of LIBRARY POSSUM SPIRIT GFS

I ended up falling into a huuuuge rabbit hole?? Which I absolutely must share. Join me, friends, on the hunt for a legit Colombian cryptid.

First step:

Okay, so northern gracile opossum. If you speak Spanish, you know *exactly* why I chose this specific possum. (Yes, I am an absolute gremlin. Context for non-Spanish speakers: the second word in its scientific name is the same word as a Spanish slur for gay people. Get reclaimed.)

However, when I looked up northern gracile opossum:

All right, these all look pretty similar, right?

Except. One says Brazilian gracile opossum, and the other two say agile gracile opossum.

And if you go to the first link, even that isn't the northern gracile possum.

It's a whole genus, and that picture also shows the agile gracile opossum.

The only reason this is an issue is that I'm trying really hard to narrow this down to specifically Colombian wildlife, and the habitat of the agile gracile possum doesn't quite include Colombia.

Back to the wikipedia page on the whole genus.

So there are several species here, with relatively close-by if not overlapping habitats.

I want to take a moment to emphasize this.

The northern gracile opossum has one of the smallest ranges, if wikipedia is to be trusted. Which. Which is another rabbit hole I need to circle back to, before I'm done researching.

At this point, though, I was still pretty confident.

Oh ho ho: the hubris. Behold, a preview.

At first, however, there were good signs:

We start to get to the root of the issue at the reproduction section. (No, the joke I'm building up to is not some weird possum mating thing. As my friends quote Pattern from Stormlight Archive, and as I cannot resist quoting despite not having read beyond WoK: NO MATING)

Oh heck. No info again.

Yuuuup.

Alright, alright. Well, very little info on this site about the northern gracile opossum. That's fine.

(Although this had me scratching my head. If there so many of them, why is there so little info?)

I start looking for photos, since all the photos that showed up in my first search were of related species like agile gracile possum.

However:

Almost *every* single image I find online is a different possum.

I decide to try Google Scholar, with the following results.

As before, the results are either different related species. Or, when it is the northern gracile opossum... absolutely no info.

I'm so sorry for technically possum-fishing you @temporary-tats with the photo refs I sent, but those were all agile gracile possums.

This tiny, adorable possum broke me. It's the first time I ever used a reference of a different species in Uncertain Magia lore notes. For the sake of my sanity, I must assume northern and agile possums are similar.

For now.

I am still far, far too stubborn to let Charalá be anything other than a northern gracile opossum spirit. I will find a photo of this possum. I will find information on it.

Se presentará del 3 de septiembre al 23 de octubre, los sábados y domingos en el Teatro El Galeón Abraham Oceransky

La Secretaría de Cultura del Gobierno de México y el Instituto Nacional de Bellas Artes y Literatura (INBAL), a través de la Coordinación Nacional de Teatro y la compañía Hasta la China, presentan ¿Qué tan arriba es arriba?, de Brendan Murray, con traducción y dirección de escena de Otto Minera y las actuaciones de Gilary Negrete, Aketzali Reséndiz, Itzhel Razo, Jesús Salgado y Aleida Méndez.

Esta obra ofrecerá temporada del 3 de septiembre al 23 de octubre, los sábados y domingos a las 13:00 horas, en el Teatro El Galeón Abraham Oceransky del Centro Cultural del Bosque.

¿Qué tan arriba es arriba? presenta al personaje de Pequeña Estrella en un recorrido para entender y admitir los inevitables ciclos de la vida y la muerte. En esta historia no hay día sin noche, pero tampoco hay noche sin un nuevo día y el tiempo no puede detenerse Es así como Pequeña Estrella, junto con un pájaro que no tiene alas, y su abuela mamá Luz, ella encontrará las respuestas que le saltan al presentarse la posibilidad de la pérdida de una persona querida.

El tema de "la muerte” en el teatro dirigido para niñas y niños, inspiró al director Otto Minera, a traducir este texto con la intención de que en un futuro fuera representada y lograr, que pese a ser teatro para pequeñas infancias, personas de todas las edades puedan disfrutar la calidad teatral y literaria de esta obra.

Al respecto, el director de escena compartió: “Nuestra intención como compañía es ofrecer teatro de calidad para todo público. Para lograrlo, creemos estar empezando con el pie derecho al considerar que la concepción misma de nuestro trabajo está manifiesta, de entrada, en la obra que hemos seleccionado: un texto de gran altura literaria y teatral, un genuino texto dramático que sabe hablarles a los niños sin sustraerles el placer complejo del teatro, sin negarles su plena condición humana."

“Esta obra se desarrolla en dos dimensiones, una cósmica y otra individual, el diseño de audio genera una distinción entre ambas atmósferas, lo cual funciona como transición entre una y otra, mientras que la escenografía y vestuario siguen la misma norma: la magia debe ser simple y hermosa. Por otro lado, el vestuario hace cómplice al espectador, revelando los "secretos" detrás de su estética, mientras que la escenografía va acorde al espacio escénico, en este caso al Teatro El Galeón”, concluyó Otto Minera.

La producción ejecutiva y gestión están a cargo de Kenia Celic, Aranza Atilano y Fabiola Núñez. Los diseños de escenografía, iluminación y vestuario son de Félix Arroyo, mientras que el diseño de escenofonía es de Joaquín López “Chas”. Los diseños y realización de maquillaje y peinado son de Aketzali Reséndiz y el diseño de cartel y adaptaciones gráficas de Erick Dezib.

Chaos was a good boat.

Scratch that. Chaos was the best boat.

He is the best boat in the triangle, the most quickly one, the most durable one, the best one to go around the seven magical seas of the triangle, the one with deadly weapons that can help at much to do damage.

And He was the only boat alive in the entire universe! Wohooo! Take that simple boats of the seas! Chaos is the only living boat in the time and space!

Oh but do you know what is better to know that?

His crew.

He had people living inside him, traveling around the world, making explosions, discovering new things that are a lithe complexed for him but also interesting and awesome

He is the happiest boat in the seven seas because of that.

And the People were really good people!

They are so different from each other but at the same time, they are so identicals. They all are good people.

Clovis had been with him for a long time. So long that they had forgotten how long he had been there, the ghost child was a good swing away things kid.

He is always trying to be useful to the mission but he is more than happy to help with checking whatever thing that goes ahead. Taking care of those bad manners skeletons that sometimes try to scale him, talking with him and making sure that he is okay even in the lows days. So yeah he likes the ghost boy.

Another one that he likes much is Caramba. The little green alien in the very funny but useful robot costume that use to walk and do things in, was really skilled in the repair and inventory thing! He never mist the manteinmint, does it gently and even asked him if things are okay!, yup he really really like Caramba.

Cici was a good woman.

A gold second in command one too! she was the best to know all things, putting away to where to go and doing so funny things that help him be an even better ship! She definitely was the best second in command in the world!.

Cragar was rude and odd but caring and strong! He was the best to defend him and making Clovis last! He makes Cici feel safe and made Caramba a little worried but is okay! He is a good boy that knows how to tell creatures to stop trying to eat him.

Calabrass was…. interesting.

The sword had been glued to his mastil for ages until Good Little Captain had come.

The talking magic man/sword had been a little mannerless to his likings and suddenly we are besties in a way.

But definitely, He likes Zak the most.

The kid was a genius! He knows when to attack and when is time to fly! Zak knows when he needs a little pat in the wheel and believe in him to do the right choices in a battle, he asks when wanting something and had the beds crazy but very good and working plans! Zak also plays with Clovis, and always try to understand what he said in the boat language, and sometimes he did! Oh, and he is always defending him! it's so good when your captain just tell to the world that mind themselves cause this boat is alive and you should respect him.

And the best thing is when Zak said he is a good ship with a pat on the wheel. It's made him so happy! Because that reaffirm that he is the best boat in all the word!

Zak is his youngest captain but so far is the best one.

So yes. Chaos like Zak, Clovis and Caramba the most.

They are his favorite people in all the triangle and no one can change that!

desnuda ante mis ancestras,

de la milpa mujeres, 

envueltas de tierra. 

Las busco, reescribo, 

repinto 

a aquellas bonitas,  

las nombro 

mujeres salvajes. 

Los hombres las odian 

yo las abrazo.  

No me arranquen  

de sus pensamientos.

Mujeres salvajes,  

son más bonitas, 

que nada en el mundo. 

Somos bonitas, 

salvajes, fieras.

||So I was playing in Azaleas and i tried to make my girls. So you can have an idea of what they look like in my imagination (I was limited with clothes and hair XD)

From left to right always:

1st picture: Sisla, Vixnebula, Aketzali

2nd picture: Dea now, Dea when still alive

3rd picture: Amairani, Perla and Thalassi

PS: The tower you see behind is the castle’s library. Vixnebula’s hair is shorter and her skin is more orange/golden. Perla’s hair is long but she always has it in a braid crown. I forgot to add the necklaces XD Only Perla and Thalassi have them.
