There were many drawbacks living in the slums of Ganymede: no sunlight, the sticky heat, the polluted air, everything coated in about three layers of rust... but the worst drawback, in Walter's opinion, was the water.
On Rubicon, everything was clean and sterilised. Every surface, gleaming so white it hurt the eyes, the scent of preservatives and bleach constantly burning his nose and tickling the back of his throat. The water, too, always carried a faint chemical aftertaste - nothing harmful, just completely sterilised of any and all Coral contaminants, or so his parents would say when he used to complain about the taste.
On Ganymede it was an entirely different story.
The water always tasted of metal, had a filmy quality to it, and looked cloudy. The locals said that it was just how it had been filtered, that the water was safe to drink - everyone drank it here for hundreds of years, and they're still around, see? - but Walter had always struggled to adjust to it. It was kind of funny, really. The grime and the stink and the lack of sunlight, he had adjusted to with minimal difficulty, but the water? It was difficult to swallow - literally.
He wasn't the only one who felt this way. There was a booming market for bottled water - from topside. Fresh water, melted from the polar ice they cut to feed the massive water demands of the surface colony, and purified. It was the equivalent to fucking tap water on Rubicon, but on Ganymede it may as well have been liquid gold. The smugglers who dealt with it upcharged it massively, and they had limited stock, fleecing the locals without a hint of shame - and the locals knew they were being scammed, but bought the water anyway, because even though they said 'oh the tap water's safe!' they really knew it wasn't. These people threw away their meagre spending money for clean water of all things.
And Walter was one of them.
"Here's your usual, scrapper: one ten-pack of two-litre bottles for 10 COAM."
Walter grunted at the criminally high price, handing over the 10 COAM credit chip to their resident 'water baron' without a fuss.
A smuggler who had found his niche and a steady income because of it, their 'water baron' had a reputation of being both reliable and somewhat reasonable with his prices. While other sector water barons were shameless in charging 10 COAM per bottle, theirs - a man by the name of Mike of all things - generously charged 1 COAM per bottle, understanding the economics of 'keep things affordable so people can actually buy your shit'.
Walter still disliked the whole situation, though - disliked the fact that he was openly engaging in this fucking scam. The water probably was safe down in the slums, it wouldn't do for all of the working class to die of dysentry or some other terrible water-borne disease, but it still tasted foul with a terrible texture.
"Looks good," Mike said cheerfully, stowing the credit chip after checking its authenticity. "You know, I've got another shipment coming in tomorrow. I can set aside another ten-pack for you - as a favour."
Mike's tone was sly, dangling that tempting fish hook. Walter just picked up his purchased water, leaning back slightly to mitigate the weight. Twenty kilos wasn't heavy, but it was a long walk back to his garage and his arms were bound to get tired sooner rather than later.
"No, this'll do," he said. "I'll come by in two weeks for my usual."
"You need to learn how to splurge a little, scrapper," Mike tutted, and even wagged his finger at him. "You've been such a good customer, y'know! I'm even willing to give it to you for a discount."
Walter turned on his heel and walked away.
"Think about it!" Mike called at his retreating back. "I'll be here as usual!"
Walter ignored him. He knew better than to take the bait Mike was dangling in front of him. He wasn't blind to the looks that water baron gave him - or rather, his chest and his partially unzipped mechanics jumpsuit - and didn't want to deal with that pointless drama. He just wanted some damn water that didn't taste like shit, not beating off the ambitious advances of some small-time water smuggler.
He scoffed under his breath, weaving through the crowd that loitered around the water baron's market. Several stalls selling other smuggled goods sprung up around here, and it was one of the few illegalities that the Ganymede Guards actually turned a blind eye to. No one was stupid enough to sell weapons or hard drugs here, after all, and this was the only place to get luxuries that were considered ubiquitous up on the surface colony.
Besides, no Ganymede Guard was going to arrest someone for reselling bottled water or a fucking watermelon.
Walter eventually left the smuggler's market behind, adjusting his water pack every so often as the muscles in his arms burned. Gravel and broken glass crunched underneath his steel-capped boots, and overhead the buzzing of lights and the groan of rusted ventilation fans added to the usual ambience of the metal coffin they were all buried inside. He followed the winding, maze-like alleyways of Sector E's slums until he eventually came upon a much wider street, the flickering sign 'CARLA'S SCRAPPERS' flickering above the open doors of their garage.
Home sweet home... or something.
He walked in, grunting at Chatty's equally subdued greeting, and casting a quick look across the cluttered workspace. A few mechs in various states of dismantlement were strewn across the garage, their hulls more rust than metal, and their servos and circuity pulled and laid out like electronic guts. Out of view he could hear Carla's radio warbling out that classical music called 'metal rock' or something, accommpanied by the buzz of a scrapping saw - or Carla's attempt at singing. It was hard to tell which was which actually.
"I'll tell the Chief you're back, kid," Chatty said.
"Thanks," Walter muttered, continuing on until he reached the rear of the garage, and entered into their adjoining living space to dump his smuggled water into their fridge - though not before extracting a single bottle from the pack.
He could admit that this was a silly indulgence to have. He could save that COAM for something more useful, like their war chest for their eventual expedition to Rubicon, or practical things like new boots (his soles were pretty worn on these) or new clothes (he was still wearing the mechanic suit from when he'd been a teenager, and his chest had grown in since then). Instead he was spending it on overpriced water, just so he could have a taste of something familiar, of something clean.
Walter sighed, cracking the lid open and taking a hearty swig from the bottle. It was lukewarm, and tasted sterile - but it was still the single most refreshing thing Walter had drank all day. He indulged in another large mouthful, before screwing the lid back on and stowing the bottle into the fridge to join the others.
To be honest, he actually wanted enough water to have a shower that didn't make him feel slimy afterwards. He wasn't a vain man, and his relationship with his body could be described as ruthlessly pragmatic. So long as it was fit and healthy, he didn't care if the water made his skin uncomfortably dry sometimes, or left him smelling like a stagnant pond, or caused his hair to be slightly greasy, unless he used more shampoo than usual (which was its own indulgence Walter spent too much COAM on). But after years of showering in this foul water, after knowing that things could be so much better (hot water, showers that actually had pressure, being clean god, he missed being clean), he found a sort of homesickness and frustrated longing he'd thought himself incapable of.
His mind wandered back to Mike's offer: if he "splurged" on another ten pack, that'd mean he'd have 40 litres of water. If he stretched it out, he could clean himself with that water for a solid week... heat up a clean coffee pot, pour it over his head, give himself a good scrub...
...
Walter scowled and shook his head.
This place was getting to him. He couldn't be spending his money on such frivolous luxuries, not when he and Carla needed to save what few credits they got down here for the future expedition and information gathering. Besides, he was a scrapper. He was going to be coated in oils and machine lubricant and god knows what else immediately afterwards anyways.
No. Spending 10 COAM on clean water every two weeks was all he'll allow himself - for drinking. Not for showering. He'd endured this situation for almost seven years now, he can endure it for another seven if he had to.
He nodded to himself. That's right. Walter was above such petty desires. If it wasn't in service to his mission, then he didn't need it. He can live without it.

The next day, after enduring an evening shower where the water had come out of the nozzle brown... Walter went and got that second ten-pack of water, much to the smirking Mike's delight.

I want someone to do errands with. When I go to buy tissue paper or get the milk can there be someone acting as my guide? someone who makes sure I get the cheapest brand because I forget sometimes. I want someone to sit on the steps and blow dandelions with me, twisting them around until all of the stubborn white whispers dissolve from our vision, looking for all the world like sugar threads spun into the wind, making the air sweeter with the weight of the love behind our wishes.
I want someone who understands the kind of knot my overactive imagination gets into when it sees the leaves tumbling around the edges of the road, someone who holds my attention and stops it from wandering. someone who captures my undivided heart and makes it stay in one place, someone who can allay my doubts and keep them to rest. someone the colour of the darkest night who will not turn their nose up at my bruises. someone who will be my excuse to stop wandering and live at home for the rest of my life. someone who makes even the mundane things glow, enriching my sight. someone who makes my name sound like a hymn. someone who tricks me into doing the holding on. someone who hugs me like they'll lose me if I do so much as step away (and that's what I need. confirmation that I'm forever needed.)

you're like water, buoying me up when I face your endless depths. trusting you repays me with nothing resembling fear, i would grow gills willingly if it meant that I could continue being embraced by you - you have oxygen to offer if i am not stubborn. there is an element of challenge but that's what keeps things interesting. to know that i'm the only one who you would blush for. anyway, we've left the previous topic again. the paths are so twisty and perfectly enticing when I'm thinking about you. there are no shortage of ways I could go, labyrinths I could explore, and I could always find my way out by keeping my left hand on the wall, love guiding me without the need of an outer compass. love is always the right answer.

Like a fisherman longs for his boat to finish being painted, and like an overworked salesman wishes to go to sleep. Like a disabled person longs for accessibility to become a priority, and like a father longs for his children to keep quiet at night so he can get some rest. I long for you like only love knows how to do, and I long for you so much that I have at least a hundred notes detailing it. My love for you surpasses Arabic poems. when I look back at you, I see a boy in the shape of love. and we humans, we can't help but run blindly after love, even if love sneaks into a nearby semi-detached house's garden and we find ourselves disoriented, wildly swinging our head around to catch the glimpse that we thought appeared (and probably did appear) and stop it from running. love is an endless chase to catch up with the one whose footprints you have been admiring for so long. love is stepping in those footprints to check the size difference and analysing how large that person must be, the weight of their heart and their feet. love is wondering what burdens they carried to leave such deep imprints. love can also be using your feet to make flowers around their footprint - they become the centre of your world. they provide a gravitational field to keep everything in place, they are the anchor that makes your heart stable. love makes fear inconsequential. love is the disappearance of all that made you faulty and the replacement of it with a generous resolution.
love is writing you into a dozen poems because you should get to see how you have centred my life. love is settling down and becoming wildly free. love removes all the things that made you quiet, loud, soft, hard, it feels out the things that you weren't that you developed over a period of disuse and being badly cared for and restores you to the glory that perhaps you never reached in your original self, brightening someone's home like a painting, being brightened like a home carefully kept and swept. someone who loves you will treat you like the house they wanted to buy and stay in forever. you will exchange your ideas of a home and end up with the descriptions of each other. you are responsible for each other's upkeep, and you will find that if you love someone, you will start doing the laundry so that they do not have to after a long day. you will hug them so that they do not have to buy excess stuffed animals, you will get them that hat they have been eyeing so they do not have to waste some of the hard-earned case you know they slaved away for, you will show up every time they haven't asked you to be there because you know just sitting there with them will bolster their self-worth. you will say sweet things unprompted no matter how hard it is because they shouldn't have to make the effort to ask for it. love cannot be hidden. it is communication. love is and will always be present and always will be shown as long as you don't stop feeling it. overflowing like a waterfall, like a bucket, keep giving and giving. love never stops growing - it is not stagnant. stagnant things are always cursed, like an unnaturally still pond or a dark house where the lights are always off. overgrown forests and lush castles are simply places to explore. too much is never too much, the person receiving is just too little and therefore stagnant. be too much and love as much as much can be. when I flick my fingers over this screen words blur together like gunshots. let your love be a rain that doesn't stop, a storm that never ends. glory is in being a wonder of nature.
this is what I know of love.
a current without an end, swishing through the rivers into the seas and back into the rivers again. unselfish, bringing growth wherever it goes. let it never be confined to a single community, and let it never be polluted by people's convoluted ideas of what love is - coffee dumped into the rivers will do no good to cows. love keeps vigil, a pure and righteous wave that regards the boundaries of rivers and never floods fields of crops without designed permission. look, I could go on and on about love, love never runs out of ways to express itself. this love of ours is one that will never run out even though we may never reach each other's side. you have taught me what love is with three words. i will love you and those three words even after the end of my days move into the end of my nights and even after those nights are consumed by bright light. i will love you when the sun is fallen and the only thing shining is the face of Jerusalem. i will love you beyond my body, which will turn into dust, and my thoughts, which will stop short like a grandfather clock, and my words, which will be lost to lacunae. I will love you into oblivion itself and the void will shrink back at our persistence.

our love surpasses the stories that i have sketched out so many times - they are merely drafts, and lack context because of my incomplete transmissions, my inability to finish the stories through aching thumbs and the shy hands. there is no need to try and find fault with them - even forcing myself to confront our lives with hard logic and examining them with a horrific detachedness, the deeds we have committed astound me. the continuity of our story, its themes circulating again and again, our respective give-and-take, the way we bare our fangs and lower our haunches, how we begin to shed our wild beast's skin to show soft, human flesh. there is no poem or song that i could write or play to evoke these things, which spring to my mind even as I am crying. you are the reason i am able to get back up in the darkness and keep going. because of the way you have shown me, i walk a path which is shrouded with strength.
this love is a warrior's love, a beast's love, a fealty and a chaotic binding. this love is a restfulness and a cycle of a spoked wheel, an unstoppable choking of laughter, a hug in its entirety, holding nothing back, a blessing and a sanctification.
could i go on? of course I can go on. with this love my pen may never stop writing. i am accustomed to being one and done with my pieces - they need no further modifications. but with you, these words are living things, a bonsai tree that I prune and water from time to time, edit and reshape, one of the only things worth going back to to reflect upon. my love, this writing is a work that will remain forever unfinished - I say this with the greatest delight! you are forever unfinished. the story will never end. and endings, although necessary for change, are for other parts of my life - just as you may lose your childhood toys and even the skills that you have honed and nurtured, you may lose your physical capabilities that you have striven so hard for, you may lose your memories, yet you cannot lose what makes you - you! your experience cannot be unwritten. your story cannot be erased. and you indeed are the foundation of my story, a root twined around mine. you cannot have a duet without two singers, a pas de deux without a partner and a leader; in this work we will endure because one cannot exist without the other.

Prime example of every rant I've had about moss collection ever. TW: I'm about to have another, there's a TLDR at the bottom if you don't wanna emerse yourself in it or you're welcome to skip unless you plan on doing this yourself in which case please read on
Despite the praise moss receives for it's "fast spreading" qualities, moss takes an EXTREMELY long time to grow and cutting out a section like this is a huge loss on that patch that will take probably over a year to regenerate.
Moss is so important!!! It not only provides habitats for an abundance of insects and other micro-organisms which sustain the ecosystem and soil health, but are also a vital food source for larger animals due to nutrient rich qualities as well as it's inhabitants!! Birds use moss as a source of nesting material, and some amphibians spawn their young in moss due to it's common growth habits and moisture retention qualities. All of these species need to have enough moss to sustain their populations and that's really difficult to do in it's own right with growing habitat loss without the consumer market taking it a step further. Carving out this much in one sitting - from one area - not only completely destroys any hope another species' may have had for using it but will stress the moss out and this clump likely will not even survive the transition, and the two pieces left by the road may even decay as well.
If that doesn't suffice, moss has so many benefits for the environment, it lays the groundwork for other plants to grow by stabilizing environments and trapping organic matter as it grows to basically make it's own soil for other plants to establish themselves in, filters air far more efficiently than trees and grasses, and can store CO2 for longer and trap nutrients for other organisms to process.
Another important role it plays is that scientists use moss to detect changes in our environment, purify waters and other substances, and restore habitats for other life forms - and all of these different areas are not only vastly more important than aesthetic preferences for a living room, but also require a healthy and thriving population!! Sphagnum(/peat) moss particularly is praised for a lot of different reasons, but if you ever get the chance just research the effects the loss of peat bogs has had on places like Canada and Chile because it's so crazy it's actually ridiculous - and sphagnum is probably the easiest thing in the world to propagate yourself as well!!
When people do this in mass quantities, it can be so harmful to the environment I cannot even begin to tell you. With the rising popularity of moss for the plant/herp community for terrariums, etc, and usefulness in crafting projects, the demand for it is increasing, which means that people are capitalising on an easy source of income by making businesses out of harvesting "fresh moss" as it's a readily available item for them to go out and grab. Etsy is rife with sellers using "fresh wild moss" as a marketing strategy to gather more interest, because hey if it's grown in the wild it's good quality right? And then the moss being distributed by these sellers is likely "foraged" unsustainably and having videos like this where they make this collection process seem so simplistically enjoyable and easy to do encourages other people to do the same. We (and yes I mean we, I'm not gonna stand on a soap box and pretend I'm Florence Nightingale, I've done stupid shit too, we're all learning) are so quick to trust that it's okay to do something because we assume somebody else knows better because they're doing it, and it breeds a whole community of bad practices.
I'm not saying buying moss or collecting moss is bad but PLEASE if you are going to harvest moss, there are so many videos on how to do it so that it doesn't destroy habitats (or at least lessens the damage done) by taking small portions from the middle of a patch where you can pat the other moss down around it to fill the gap and decreases the stress you're putting on it - or better yet! Take small clumps that have already dropped or been picked off by birds (our magpies love chucking moss off the roof, there's nothing we can do to stop them from tearing it up, but we can certainly make sure that it doesn't go to waste.)
There are more videos than I could swing a seal at showing you how to propagate moss as well, simply by cutting it into small pieces, spreading it out across a wider surface area, and you have even more moss to utilise in the future. P l e a s e, I am on my hands and knees begging you to challenge people who are doing this and politely inform them of the destruction it causes.
TLDR: Moss is really important for the environment and we need to make sure we're purchasing CULTIVATED MATERIAL ONLY or harvesting sustainably. Let's stop destroying habitats and harming the environment further!
