Well, I've just about finished filling out my ballot and, in order to do so, I had to research all the various ballot propositions (we have ten of them this election cycle in California) and, dude, Props 33 and 34 are weird, weird enough that I had to do a ton of digging and weird enough that I have to tell you what I found if only for the entertainment value.
So Prop 33 is pretty simple, what it does is it repeals a state law from the 90s that prevented localities from enacting rent control measures. Whether you agree or disagree, that at least makes sense, right?
Prop 34 is… yeah, it's not that simple. Prop 34 requires that health care providers that (1) spent over $100 million in any 10 year period on something other than direct patient care and (2) operated multifamily housing with over 500 high-severity health and safety violations (3) spend 98% of revenues from the federal discount prescription drug program on direct patient care.
That seems oddly specific, right? How many health care providers spend that much money on something other than patient care, run multifamily housing units with lots of violations, AND participate in federal discount prescription drug programs?
It turns out that the answer is "one", and that one also turns out to be related to Prop 33.
You see, there's a non-profit based out of Los Angeles called the AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF). The AHF mostly provides AIDS-related health care stuff like tests, PrEP, and referrals to specialty pharmacies, but they also, starting in 2017, have been creating housing for low-income individuals and, since that time, they've also become politically involved in local and state ballot measures that would block some local development and allow for the expansion of rent control.
AHF is one of the main supporters of Prop 33 and backed Prop 10 in 2018 and Prop 21 in 2020 which would have also expanded rent control (Props 10 and 21 both failed). Prop 34 was backed mostly by landlord and realty groups and seems specifically targeted to stop AHF from spending money on politics.
If you're interested, this is the LA Times piece I found that finally laid the whole thing out.
Gotta love the crazy California ballot proposition system. Stay tuned for more political hilarity.

Someone pissed me off a couple of days ago
So! Below are several links to programs and foundations that promote adult literacy! Hundreds of millions of adults world wide were failed by their education system and now must fend for themselves while trying to read contracts and hospital bills and infographics from the CDC. But they don't have to be alone, and it is never too late to learn!
ProLiteracy: A network of educators, researchers, and advocates which provides research reports, learning materials, and other support to adult education programs. They assist with connecting volunteers to local programs and provide guidance and support to community leaders trying to use their programs' findings to advocate for social and political change.
Adult Literacy League: An adult education program in Central Florida, which aims to provide students with one on one attention to foster growth and confidence. It also offers English Second Language courses and job skills training, and each new student receives a comprehensive assessment to determine the best plan for them.
Saint Vincent and Sarah Fisher Center's Foundational Skills Program: A 100% free adult education program aimed at adults reading below a fifth grade level. It operates year round and is either in person or remote, and they now have a GED testing center that is open to students and the public alike.
Washtenaw Literacy: A free network of trained tutors for adults in Washtenaw County, Michigan.
Adult Learning Program (Las Vegas/Clark County): Free education classes to those lacking a high school diploma, those seeking to learn ESL, and adults who read below an eighth grade level. Also assists in students' search for gainful employment. Nevada got so fucked by COVID and the education/literacy numbers in the South West are grim. Please help these guys.
Hawaii Literacy: In addition to helping adult residents of Hawaii Island learn to read and write AND bridging the education gap in Hawaii's underserved children, they offer computer literacy classes, ESL classes, and a bookmobile. 1 in 6 Hawaiian adults struggle to read and write.
#Not Stories#mutual aid#adult literacy#'uuhhhggg its soooo disappointing when i meet a girl who's like 'yeah omg i luv 2 read'#'and then she only reads booktok trash and grocery store thrillers and manga'#'like come on thats such a turn off :/'#'like aren't you bored??? what about reading The Foundation and War & Peace and Grapes of Wrath where's THAT girl haha'#nobody gives a shit what sort of high school reading list gets your dick stiff! Madeline Peltz at MMFA:
In January, Ohio senator and Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance said that Heritage Foundation president and Project 2025 architect Kevin Roberts “is somebody I rely on a lot who has very good advice, very good political instincts.
[...] The Heritage Foundation is leading Project 2025, a far-right staffing and policy initiative backed by more than 100 conservative partner groups that seeks to remake the federal government into a vehicle for Trumpism. The proposals in the project’s policy book, Mandate for Leadership, would severely diminish reproductive, LGBTQ, and civil rights, implement draconian immigration policy, and crush climate change mitigation efforts. The Trump campaign has attempted to distance itself from Project 2025 as it becomes increasingly toxic, in spite of numerous well-documented ties between the Trump campaign and the project. A CNN review found that there are “nearly 240 people with ties to both Project 2025 and to Trump,” and at least 140 former Trump administration staffers contributed to the project. Vance brings his own close ties to Project 2025 and Heritage. In October 2023, Roberts and Vance wrote a joint op-ed in The Hill titled “Don’t hold up Israel aid to further Ukraine War funding.” Vance reposted the op-ed to his official Senate website.
Vance has also made multiple public appearances with Roberts. In March 2024, he spoke on a Twitter Space with Roberts, Johnny Burtka, president of Partner 2025 partner Intercollegiate Studies Institute, research director of Project 2025 partner Center for Renewing America Micah Meadowcroft, and Antonin Scalia, senior advisor at the Manhattan Institute.
Ohio Senator and Trump VP pick J.D. Vance praises Project 2025 architect and Heritage President Kevin Roberts as “somebody I rely on a lot who has very good advice, very good political instincts.”
Wonder why we call the Trump/Vance ticket the Project 2025 ticket?
