Summary: Ambassador heads off on vacation with Titus, Cato takes it SUPER well and is very normal

You try not to pout as you sit on the ship heading out to the planet you were being forced to take a vacation to.

Commander Titus and a couple of lower rank ultramarine's sit across from you, talking politely among themselves. Guilliman has forced you to rest after the scare you gave him on that planet that rebelled.

You sigh a bit. You heard Cato swept through the place in a day with the second company. Titus said he was on a warpath- he always delighted in battle, but this one was a personal vengeance against the people that put them through all the trouble of having to rescue the both of you.

Now you're off to a particularly pleasant agri-world, renown for their fruits and home to hot spring baths and nightly dances. The marines with you weren't thrilled about standing around while you relaxed on warm beaches, but unlike Cato, they would never dare voice it. You were a high ranking diplomat, personal ambassador to Guilliman. Most marines show you a modicum of general respect. Then again most ultramarines were very professional all around. Cato is an outlier in his attitude and disrespect.

Which is nice. It's nice to not be bullied and teased. Nice to not have a whining huffing rain cloud following you. Nice… and a little boring. The two lower rank marines don't talk much, and when they do it’s polite “yes, Ma'am.” And “of course, Lady Ambassador.” Titus was a little better, still reserved, but seemed to at least understand you were looking for conversation, so tried his best.

You smiled at him a bit. “Will you be taking part in any of the activities, Commander?” You ask, desperate for conversation. He smiles politely. “Ah, no, Lady Ambassador. That would mean I'd not be properly guarding you, and, I am here to guard you.” He said apologetically. You sigh. “You mean here to babysit me…” you mumble, putting your head on your hand and looking out the window. Babysit was the word Guilliman used for it, specifically. Calling you a disobedient child when he'd found you sneaking paperwork.

Titus let out a soft chuckle. “I'd never want to imply you were childish, my lady.” He said with a small smile. “I am merely here to ensure a less dramatic trip for you than last time.” you sigh. You were disappointed when Guilliman told you he was removing Cato from your guard. You don't know why you were. He was a huge pain in the ass, a bully, and caused most of the issues. But your mind flashed to him pinning you to that cave wall and you flushed a little. Damn it, Cato. You couldn't get that day out of your head.

He would have just cause you issues here, too. But you had secretly hoped a bit that you'd get to convince him to join you in a hot spring- no, no stop that. Its bad enough you kissed him for some reason. Everything is so complicated with him now. You hate him a little, but you also kinda really like him, and you definitely are attracted to him… and you can't get all these images and memories of him out of your head. He's haunting you and it's making you angry at him by proxy. Stupid Cato.

Titus glances at you a bit while you think. “Lady Ambassador? You look upset, is all well…?” He asks with a small frown. You blush a little, sitting up properly. “Ah, sorry. Just have things on my mind. No need to worry, Commander.” You say, composing yourself. He looks unconvinced. “Ah, I wont pry then, my lady.” He said politely.

Cato would pry, you think. No, that is unfair to Titus. He is very kind, more personable than most other ultramarines too. But he's so… professional. And polite. He sometimes will respond with a light joke if you do so first, or laugh at something. But mostly he just smiles and nods and stands an appropriate distance away. As he should, that's how a bodyguard should act. But you'd gotten used to Cato cracking jokes at your expense, and insulting random passing nobles, and walking right next to you to force you to walk into walls and things. Which is annoying. But at least it was something.

The thunderhawk jolted a little as it began to land, and for a split second your heart skipped a beat and your hand jumped to your harness. You'd been a bit jumpy about flying in small craft since the thunderhawk crash. And much more on top of keeping buckled in.

Commander Titus frowns as you flinch and grab the belt, lifting a hand a little towards you, “Ah- my lady? Are you alright?” He asked politely, confused about what happened. You frown a bit, “oh, yes, sorry. Just, a little spooked by the landing…” you play it off a bit, giving a tight smile. He raises his brow but nods and sits back as the thunderhawk finishes its landing sequence.

The marines help you unload your things and you get off the ship and look at the pretty planet you’ve landed on. Lush tropic greenery, warm breezes, greco-romann looking buildings with lots of open to the air arches. there’s a beach and gentle waves nearby, and you think you hear a waterfall. You try and force yourself to stop thinking about how much work you’ll have back home, but what if Guilliman didn’t understand your file system? did he get those things filed in time- No, stop it, relax.

You sigh, pursing your lips. you take all your unwanted thoughts, worries about work, worries about deadlines, and the stupid thoughts of Cato Sicarius saving you from burning shipwrecks and pinning you to walls- and you file them all away in your mind in your mental LATER pile. You sigh, and try and soak in the warm air. You’ll get to it, in a few days. You were ordered to relax, and you hate not following orders.

Cato paced the training fields, watching some of the newer aspirants to the Ultramarines do drills. They’d all passed trials, and it was one of his responsibilities to keep up on new recruits to the company. He didn’t normally take fresh marines, but he liked to keep an eye out for talented new Astartes. He needed the distraction anyways.

That world had been far to easy to run through, barley taking a day to fall to the impirium. It was meant to calm him, leading the charge, but it was only more infuriating how he had been cornered by people so weak and low tech. He growled to himself, and pulled his un-powered power sword out, practicing his regular drills on the combat dummy. Stupid primitive world. Stupid Titus, gallivanting on that stupid romance planet with the Ambassador- he chopped a chunk of the dummy off- Stupid Ambassador, kissing him randomly and then barely talking to him for two days- another chunk flew off- Stupid, warp-damned woman keeping him up all night, haunting his mind- The dummy shattered into a splintered mess with a hard swing. He growled, then stomped it a few times. Stupid combat dummy that can’t even take him going light on it.

He lets out a frustrated snarl and throws his sword to the ground, running his hands through his hair. What were they doing right now, his throne damned commander and the ambassador? Nothing good could come from them locked away together for days on a planet Guilliman described as “one of the few places left a noble could take a honeymoon.” He bets Titus is being unprofessional- he never knew how to stick to the rules. He bets he's taking her dancing- he's probably stealing a dance with her right now. She always dresses so impractically, and it's warm there, is she wearing something even more revealing? Is Titus eyeing her the way he did?

He heel stomps the dummy once more for good measure, picks up his blade, and storms off toward the Hangar. He has to go fight something, anything. He'll ask around for leads on something to kill and go focus on things that actually matter, like defending the Imperium. And not stupid, vapid women who probably are taking the first chance alone with Titus to give him secret kisses and hide away in corners with, doing emperor knows what in hot spring pools. He's fooling himself thinking he'd be an exception anyways, the way she smiles at everyone who looks at her, she's probably in everyone's beds. Everyone's but his.

He slams his fist on the button to open the hangar doors. One of his men looks up at him and grimaces. “Are we going out again today, sir…?” He asks, and Cato just nods and scowls. “Get everyone together, we're going… going… somewhere- it doesn't matter, just get the men in here!” He snaps. The marine frowns but nods, scrambling up to follow his orders.

He lets out a long, frustrated sigh, gripping his hair a bit as he runs his fingers back through it. If Titus lays a finger on her, he's going to kill him. He doesn't care if that's the worst thing a marine can do, betray a battle brother. Titus would be betraying him first, touching his woman- he stops dead in his tracks.

When did he start thinking of her as his?

Holy golden throne, she's driving him mad and she's not even here. She's broken his mind, flipped some switch he can't find to turn off again. He hates this, he hates her- but by the emperor, he hates the thought of her and Titus doing what he and she had done most. He grits his teeth and smashes his helmet on, stomping onto a thunderhawk. If his men weren't here in 30 seconds he was going without them. He white knuckled the hilt of his power sword.

In his mind he was desperately trying to shove all these feelings and thoughts into the overflowing WEAKNESS box, but there was just nothing rational left to think about. He's hanging on by a thread, and his men now have 20 seconds to be on this ship before he went and tore through some Orks alone.

Summary:

Obi-Wan's dreams of becoming a Jedi are crushed when he gets sent to the planet Bandomeer to join the Agri-Corpse. After getting captured and enslaved to work on a deep-sea mining platform he is saved by Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker.

Anakin is sent to the planet Bandomeer to assist Master Qui-Gon Jinn against the dark Jedi Xanatos. He didn't expect to meet Obi-Wan Kenobi. Impressed by the boy's skill Anakin decides to take him on as his apprentice and together they return to Coruscant to begin Obi-Wan's training.

6 Years Later:

Anakin Skywalker receives a distress call from an old friend. He and his padawan set off to the planet Naboo to save Senator Padme Amidala from the Trade Federation's invading forces. It's suppose to be a simple rescue mission, but as always nothing is ever simple when Anakin Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi are involved. Matters are further complicated by the growing rift between Master and Apprentice. As secrets are brought to light and new enemies make their appearance both Anakin and Obi-Wan will need to face truths neither of them expected or dared to hope for.

Fic Excerpt: Yoda and Obi-Wan discuss animal husbandry and his future

Here's another excerpt from the fic I'm currently working on:  Yoda and Agri Corps Obi-Wan discuss caring for livestock.  A fun little dose of world-building.  Yes, ‘ume’ birds are basically Space Emus.

“Think you do that stay here you should?” he asked.

“I don’t know if it matters,” the boy admitted.  “Here the sun burns me, and I can’t do the things the other kids do, and because of the sun I can’t try to do the things almost everybody can do. I can’t help the plants, the milk nerfs don’t like me, and if you think the older kids are bad, you should have been here when the ume birds decided I should have a mud bath.  I can’t seem to do anything right here, and while other farms have weaker suns, they don’t have jobs I’ll be better at.”

“A difficult age for you this is,” Yoda replied.  “Trying to gain many new skills you are.  Trying to use the Force differently you are.  Learn to use a lightsaber in one day you did not.”  

The boy bit back a comment on the usefulness of those skills now.  “I knew I would be bad with the plants, it’s not as if we don’t try to help plants grow as initiates, and I was terrible at it then too, but I didn’t think I’d have such trouble with the livestock too.”

“Still small you are.  Ume birds respect height.  Taller you must be before accept you they will.”

“They rushed me into the mud and pecked me and wouldn’t let me leave.  Mr. Catolon had to rescue me.”

“Peck you they did?  No biting?”

“Um, no.  Just pecking. It didn’t hurt much but I couldn’t get up and escape.  Every time I tried a big bird head would come down and peck me again.”

“Testing you they were.  Hurt them did you?  Use the Force against them did you?”

“No.”  Obi-Wan seemed surprised he would ask.  “I tried to yell to scare them away but they wouldn’t stop.”

Yoda chuckled.  “Used to herd ume birds in my youth I did.  Rode a pygmy ronto I did, so big enough I would be.  Tall and strong enough now you are not, but hate you the birds do not.  Bit you they would have if dislike you they had.  Telling you that subordinate you are they were.”  Yoda shaped his hand like a beaked bird and pecked at Obi-Wan’s hand.  “Low in the pecking order you are.  Telling you to come back when bigger you are they were.”

The boy looked skeptical.  “I thought they didn’t bite because I didn’t fight back and escalate the situation.”  

“Correct you were,” Yoda told him.  “Bite they would if accept your place you did not.  Some Force sensitivity ume have, respond to anger and aggression they do, even if act up on it they don’t.”

“They really don’t like Jibe,” Obi-Wan reported.  “One bit him on the arm and left a scar.  I didn’t want that to happen to me.”

Yoda gave him one more playful peck.  “Watch them when fledge their chicks do.  When get more independent and leave the chick yard they do.  Treating you like a fledgling they were, like an enemy not. Like canine packs they can be, a hierarchy they have.  Big enough to be a keeper, on par with the matriarch you are not.  Boss them around you cannot.  But if bigger you are, accept you they would.  Also like you they will when bring food you do.”

“They stole the treats in my pockets before they pushed me in the mud.”

Yoda snorted.  “Insolent fledgling you were, keeping treats for yourself.”  He chuckled when Obi-Wan grinned just a little.  “Test all the younglings they do, to see if accept you the birds will.  Try again they have not because too small you are still.  Hate you they do not.  Sense darkness in people ume can.  Go near them Jibe ever does?”

“No,” Obi-Wan furrowed his brow.  “Sometimes he goes to the fence to tease them, and the biggest birds get riled up and raise their feathers and show their claws and hiss at him.”

“Ooh, like him they do not,” Yoda grimaced.  “Hiss at you when bring their food you do?”  

“No,” the boy answered, serious.  “They stand up straight and grunt at me until I finish pouring the food.”

“Ah, yes.  Feed us faster, Fledgling! they are saying.  Bother them you do not.  Training you they are.”

Obi-Wan looked at Yoda, a blank expression on his face.  “I wasn’t picked as a padawan because the ume were supposed to train me?” he asked, deadpan.

“No,” Yoda snorted.  “Train everyone they do.  Even Jibe. Train him they have to keep away. Very intelligent they are.”

“Why did you have to herd ume?” Obi-Wan asked.  “Did, um, padawans do that when you were young?”

“Hee hee, no.  Raise ume on Coruscant we did not, even when young I was.  Left the Temple when young I was I did.  Good Force connection I had, but too small my body for padawan training still was.  Went out into the galaxy I did.  Crewed ships I did.  Grew plants I did.  Herded ume I did, for four seasons.  Accepted into the flock I was with my ronto.  Let me sleep with them they would, warm in their feathers.  Let me tend their wounds and collect their oil they would.  Let me take their eggs they would if fertilized they were not.  Know they did that check I would, that help care for chicks I would.”  Yoda laughed at the memory.  “Follow me in a line all the little chicks would behind my ronto.”

The boy gave him another small smile.  “They let the chicks come near when I bring food.”

“Do that for Jibe they do not?”

“They don’t.”

“Hate you they do not.  Want you to be tougher and stronger before trust you with the chicks they do.”  Yoda sighed and poured the last of the tea into his cup, then began stacking his dishes on the tray.  Obi-Wan followed suit.  “Herding ume still feels wrong does?”

“It doesn’t feel right.  Nothing does.”

One of the many wonderful things the artists of SW: Rebels did for the franchise was adding cats.  

Love this artist.  OF COURSE, if cats exist in SW, Qui-Gonn Jinn brought home strays.  Of COURSE he expected Obi-Wan to participate in their feeding and socialization.  Of course the one who got scratched up was Obi-Wan.  I’m just picturing the poor Padawan finding his bed got peed on/the mother tooka had a litter on his robes/his cloak was shredded, and Qui-Gonn blithely explaining either that it’s because Obi is doing X, Y, and Z wrong, or that ‘it’s because the tookas appreciate your care for them, Padawan, that they feel the need to leave physical marks of their possession.”

“Attachment is forbidden, master,” groused Obi-Wan, throwing another perfectly good set of robes down the recycling chute.  The robes in question had been one of the few sets hand-sewn by elders from the Agri Corps and they practically emanated peace.  He’d LIKED those robes.

“They’re tookas,” Qui-Gon said, stating the obvious.

A while ago I met this cute kitten who was staying in a small town where I had a picnic. I have thought many times about wanting to draw a loth-cat ever since!

I have often given Qui-Gon Jinn a hard time because he’s so often used in STAR WARS fandom as a weapon to beat on other characters I love and it makes it difficult to like him, as well as it overshadows who the character himself is. So, to help balance that out some, I wanted to do a set of recs to remind myself–and just share some happiness in!–that I actually do very much like Qui-Gon! He’s a good person who really loved the people around him, he cared very deeply, he had an amazing friendship with Yoda (seriously, that Yoda’s the one he reaches out to when he becomes a Force Ghost, that even after death, Qui-Gon loves his Jedi family, it gives me feelings in my feelings place every single time), and one of my favorite things about Master & Apprentice is that I often got the impression that he knew he was kind of obnoxious sometimes, but he was at peace with it, he was fine with that. Cody/Wooley shower saucy is precisely what it says on the tin but it's also ridiculous soft and a gift bribe for @voices-of-my-brothers for a fic they're writing.

I'm pretty sure you know most of my others on the list and if you want more specifics on any of them, feel free to ask.

I would like to talk about my Time Travel AU because I'm actually really excited for it. It's another 212th Appreciation Week prompt, but it's gonna end up being several fics long.

A group of 212th members end up flung into the past and de-aged to about 10-12 years old nat-born age. They are on Mandalore and need to find a way to one of the cities where they discover that they're in the past and also that Jaster Mereel and Jango Fett were thrown back into the past (their ghosts from the future were put in their past bodies).

They discover the chips after Mij and Jaster demanding full medical exams for all of them, just in case they got injured on their way to Keldabe, but they're unable to actually remove them before they have to go and rescue Obi-Wan.

As soon as they'd gotten to a place where they could, Cody started trying to figure out where Obi-Wan was, and called the Temple. Naturally, they don't hand out information in Initiates and especially not to Mandalorian children, so Cody is forced to get Crys to slice into their records. They find out that Obi-Wan is on Bandomeer for some strange reason and is part of the Agri-Corps (which is *not* supposed to happen in their opinion. Obi-Wan is a Jedi!)

They need to go rescue Obi-Wan, and that's when the first fic ends.

The second fic is from Obi-Wan's perspective in the mines of Bandomeer where he was joined by Alphas 17 and 16 (Alpha-16 is @ninjatwins oc). They're rescued by the 212th (or they rescue themselves and are met on the way out by the 212th) and they take all three to Mandalore because they're not going to let Jinn take Obi-Wan away from them (sorry to anyone who likes Qui-Gon Jinn, but he doesn't really play a big role in this). The second fic ends with Mace showing up on Mandalore after he'd woken up in his past body with a message from an anonymous tipper (Alpha-16) explaining Obi-Wan's situation and info from Qui-Gon that Obi-Wan was taken by a pack of small Mandalorians. Mace figured that if anyone else was trapped in this time travel force bullshit, it would be Obi-Wan and the 212th so he goes and he gets to take on Obi-Wan as his padawan!

Not sure where I'll go from here, but another important thing of note is that Tarre Vizsla was the one to send everyone back in time because he wanted more Mandalorian Jedi and the clones were the best link between the two cultures, but Jaster as Mand'alor was the best opportunity for it to happen. Best of both worlds.

Also, Jaster was in a triad relationship (platonic or romantic doesn't really matter) with Master Fay and a Goran Mikkel (my OC who is the same species as Master Fay and who is an incredibly important person in Mandalorian culture). So lots of fun there :D

What frustrates me most about fandom defaulting to the Jedi Apprentice characterization of Qui-Gon is that all of the Jedi were kind of awful in that series (Jude Watson's portrayal of the Jedi in particular are always kind of questionable to me), but fic always acts like Qui-Gon is somehow uniquely awful. Like, fandom always treats Qui-Gon like Qui-Gon alone is at fault for not immediately selecting Obi-Wan as a Padawan and Obi-Wan being sent off to Bandomeer. But Qui-Gon didn't design this system of Initiates being sent off to the Agri-Corps. That's on the Jedi Order in general in this weird Watson-verse, and more specifically, with the Jedi's leadership. But somehow, it always comes down onto Qui-Gon?

And even the Melida/Daan situation. Yes, Qui-Gon was wrong to leave Obi-Wan there, but it's not like any of the other Jedi went back for Obi-Wan. And when Obi-Wan did return, the other Jedi were really condescending and rude to him about his decision to temporarily leave, to the point that Cold and Unfeeling Mace Windu actually scolded him for rescuing a group of children is in imminent danger. Like, it's clearly not just Qui-Gon who's the problem in these books, but fic treats him like he's the only person who's wronged Obi-Wan so that every other Jedi can lecture Qui-Gon on how horrible and unappreciative of Obi-Wan he is.

And another variation of the “abusive Qui-Gon” characterization I deeply dislike is this idea that Obi-Wan was somehow afraid of Qui-Gon and determined to protect Anakin from him.

Like, uh, excuse me? Obi-Wan has no problem arguing with Qui-Gon, especially not about Anakin. He outright told Qui-Gon that he'd have a place on the Council if it wasn't for Qui-Gon constantly going against the Council. When Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon are meeting with someone else, Obi-Wan has no problem speaking up instead of deferring to Qui-Gon. And most importantly, Qui-Gon has no issue with Obi-Wan doing any of this. At his worst, he tells Obi-Wan that Obi-Wan still has much to learn, and at his best, he outright tells Obi-Wan that Obi-Wan is a better Jedi than him and will make a fine Jedi Knight.

And then if you go into actual canon, Qui-Gon gave up a position on the Council that he actually really wanted so he could continue to train Obi-Wan. But fandom would rather focus on the non-canon series so they can write about Obi-Wan as his fanon characterization as some doormat too insecure and anxious to ever raise his voice at someone instead of his canon personality as someone who doesn't walk into a room without at least three snarky/wry comments ready to go.

As someone who writes heavily from Legends stuff, and who thinks fanon can be anyone's sandbox, I am still so utterly frustrated that I have to tell people that the Jedi Apprentice books aren't canon every time I write canon Qui-Gon. Like. Get your head out of the Woobie-Wan fics for ten seconds, none of that is canon and I don't have to stick to it if I don't want to.

Just - fanon insistence on only taking the worst parts of Qui-Gon's character from the child-focused young reader adventure novels, where adults are useless by design, has brain-rotted so many people and I hate it. Qui-Gon's a fun character and a complete bitch and a fascinating person. But all we get in fandom is either Not Like Other Girls Jedi Saint or Horrible Abusive Monster and I'm tired.

Forget Me Not - Separatist General

Obi-Wan Kenobi was born on the planet Stewjon, discovered as Force Sensitive and taken to the Jedi Temple. His beginnings were like all other initiates, he lived in the creche, made friends, got into some trouble and was a generally happy young boy. Outside of the bullying of course. When the time came, he fought Bruck Chun in the padawan duels hoping to get the attention of a Master - Master Qui-Gon specifically. 

Originally rejected, Obi-Wan was then sent to Bandomeer where he was to join the Agri-corps. But the Force has a funny way of working and together he and Qui-Gon Jinn stopped the evil plots of Xanatos becoming Master and Apprentice along the way. 

A few months down the line, Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon were sent to the planet of Melida/Daan to rescue fellow Jedi - Master Tahl. Things did not go as planned and Obi-Wan left the Jedi Order to help the Young in their civil war. The war was hard on him, he was starving, ended up becoming a General at the age of 13, and leading a group of child soldiers. After the death of his good friend Cerasi, he called Master Qui-Gon pleading for help. 

And his pleads were left unanswered. 

With the young now blaming him for Cerasi’s death he was cast aside and considered an outsider from the Young, from Melidaan. With nowhere to go and no way to survive he had to rely on the darkest parts of him - his anger and fear. Living mostly in the woods of Melidaan, it was not strange when he was taken by pirates and sold to the Zygerrians for a hefty price. An able bodied boy that no one would miss? 

How could they pass up the opportunity?

Years pass, working in the mines with a collar attached to his neck threatening at any minute to blow while also cutting off his connection to the Force. And then a Force miracle occurs and he’s being sold to someone else. Count Dooku. Obi-Wan remembers his bust in the Jedi Archives. 

The smile that the Count gives him is almost feral, but Obi-Wan merely finds his adrenaline rushing at the promises that are implied in that expression and in the Force. 

There is so much untapped potential in the young man that Dooku cannot pass up, and he has all the time in the galaxy to start training this one. And so Obi-Wan finds the Master he was finally looking for, one that does not fault him for his anger and resentment against the Jedi, against the Republic for letting all those children suffer needlessly when they could have helped. For abandoning a 13 year old boy that barely knew better to a life of war. 

So he trains, and his kyber is red. A part of him knows that’s wrong but it feels right. He doesn’t know the Sith. He’s not completely entrenched in the dark side. Right? No, he doesn’t think so. 

But the fading blue each passing day in his eyes tells a different story. 

12 years pass, and a war has broken out. The war that Dooku has been preparing him for. Perhaps this is what the Force had planned for him all along when it left him on that war torn planet: to show him the faults of the Jedi and the Republic as a whole. He was meant to tear them down and start them anew. The right way. 

And so during the first Battle of Geonosis, General Obi-Wan Kenobi of the Confederacy of Independent Systems finally stepped into the roll that felt right for him.
