I agree with you, People should not make fun of Charles II of Spain and other people with disabilities. I encourage everyone to treat each other with respect 😊.

Sure there were medical consequences to the level of intermarriage between Western European royal families, especially from the Renaissance to the 19th century, especially in the Habsburg dynasty. But the way we talk about the disabled monarchs or simple members of those dynasties often reeks of ableism and poor knowledge of those families.

How many times did I see Charles II of Spain described as “too inbred to live” by people forgetting that:

Charles II died at 38 at a time when antibiotics did not exist, so he did in fact live.

his half-sister (born from a less inbred marriage, I know) was in good health and went out to marry her FIRST cousin (who was her first cousin TWICE since her mother was her husband’s aunt and his mother was her aunt!) and had healthy children with him.

his full-sister was in good health and went out to have at least one healthy child with her UNCLE before dying in childbirth.

Did the inbreeding in Charles II’s family tree played a role in his poor health, sterility and disability? Most likely. Does that justify treating him like a freak of nature that should have never been born as if his disability was a punishment for his family “immoral” marriage? Absolutely not!

Sorry for all the able people who reassure themselves by finding “morally” logical reasons for people to be disabled, disability can (and will) happen to anyone independently from their (or their family’s) moral history.

The Elizabeth Woodville/Alys comparisons are definitely there imo. People can argue about whether they are intentional or not but it wouldn’t surprise me since GRRM is heavily inspired by The Wars of the Roses. Elizabeth was rumored to “bewitch” Edward IV, was considered an incredibly inappropriate match for him (his advisers wanted him with a politically advantageous noblewoman), and she and Edward were rumored to be secretly married. Not to mention her father’s title was Baron RIVERS. It’s fine if people don’t see it but the parallels are there without a doubt imo :)
