So an album (!!!) called Homestuck Vol. 1 has just been released! It's got all the original tracks included in the comic so far, as well as a bonus remix of Aggrieve (Violin Redux), which I think is even more of a 'haunting refrain' than the one Rose actually plays.
It's good! I don't have a head for music at all so I can't review this in depth, but it's a very different experience to hear all the music collected and played out of context. Although I have watched some of those animations enough that I see them playing in my mind (Sburban Countdown is so perfect as a 'time's running out' adrenaline kicking in song).

i was listening to the first hs album and was thinking about how the showtime and aggrieve remixes kinda sucked and so i listened to the other tracks “made by” the beta kids on freshjamz and its so cute to me how all of the beta kids are musicians but dave and jade mostly made music together.
also jade was actually pretty good at music production. i liked her solo tracks and remixes a lot more than daves. though, daves remixes of jade’s stuff were also pretty nice — a lot better than his remixes of john and rose’s songs, at least.
I feel like this difference in quality means either that dave just improved a lot since his collabs with rose and john [probs the most likely scenario since rediscover fusion was pretty good], dave put more effort into the music he made with jade, or jade helped dave a lot with improving his skills/gave more constructive input than john and rose [since i dont personally see john or rose being super into making music with dave in the way jade is]
in any case, i think its really sweet how jade and dave had this special connection with each other :]
#although this is all just based on my own subjective opinion on the tracks lol#im prob just biased towards jade’s tracks bc i love her#but also… jade being into nuclear physics and dave naming his solo track ‘rediscover fusion’#i just like to think he named it that bc of her bc that would be very cute :]#jade harley#dave strider#davejade#homestuck#chum pesters

Bracket Information
There will be a total of 513 songs in the bracket (with 585 prior to preliminary rounds)! Each round will last one week, and each batch will be staggered by one day, With two days in between rounds. Propaganda is not only allowed, but encouraged! Assuming nothing goes awry, I also have a surprise planned for the winning song >:3c
This SHOULD include every song in Homestuck, excluding Hiveswap music and Beyond Canon, however, because there are an absolutely insane amount of songs in Homestuck, it’s possible I missed one or two. If there are any you think I DID miss, feel free to send me an ask and let me know!
The bracket is seeded randomly, in no particular order.
this brackets was inspired by other brackets like it, such as @character-of-all-time @transfemswagbracket @eyepatchbracket @movingmusiccomp @undertale-ost-bracket @notp-poll-showdown
Preliminary Round
For this round, the results of a draw will conclude in the original version of the song being chosen

March Listening
Guess who watched Sofia Coppola's Priscilla? Maybe diving into Elvis' back catalogue is a weird reaction considering the content matter of the film... but he's not an artist I'd ever paid much attention to, aside from the massive hits that had worked their way into my consciousness. Genuinely, and this isn't news by any stretch, he was something else as an artist. My two cents.
Moving onto Malvina Reynolds who stunned me with her political songs. A ballard mocking the KKK? A song about grass that's actually about the struggle to keep speaking the truth in the face of active adversity? A song about how tired the world makes you? A song about the filth under the sanitary self we present to the world? Old news again, but hey. Better late than never right?
Similarly, I was sleeping on Tori Amos. Like, I KNEW HER. I have spent time listening to her songs and watching her music videos and being aware of her in the world, but I wasn't AWARE of Tori Amos. This was an anthem album 12 year old me should have listened to.
Now.
Beyonce.
Girl. First of all, check me with my finger on the zietgiest and all: I listened to COWBOY CARTER the day after it was released. And wow. Powerhouse anthemns i can't get out of my head (sixteen carriages, alligator tears), a remixed jolene wherein the aggrieved woman is actually just sad for you, jolene. (get your act together, hon).
Good month for listening in short.

so i had some thoughts about ai art a while back on twitter, based on my experience with music, and i decided to write a bit more about those thoughts:
i first got into making music in 7th grade or so with a trial version of fl studio (back then, i think, it was still called “fruity loops”), though in hindsight i couldn’t really call what i was initially making “music.” all i was doing was taking midis from vgmusic.com that other people had made, applying fl studio preset synth patches and soundfonts to each channel, and exporting them as mp3s to upload onto the newgrounds audio portal.
back then, fourteen years old and drunk on my own power, i really thought that made me a music producer. i just thought to myself, "wow! technology is so cool! i can make masterpieces (that sounded like utter crap because i had no experience in actually creating music) without putting in any effort, all by myself (by stealing someone else's hard work with zero credit)!"
this practice was colloquially referred to as “midi-ripping” and it was something the actual creators in the newgrounds audio community would get pretty peeved about, partly because it was ripping off the people who had actually put hard work into sequencing and arranging midis of their favorite video game songs, partly because it was disrespectful to people who actually put effort into their own vgm remixes and arrangements and tarnished their work in comparison, and partly because it was flooding the audio portal with unlistenable garbage.
needless to say i felt very hurt by these (entirely true) gripes and felt very aggrieved and persecuted, as fourteen-year-olds are wont to do. but eventually i realized that the actual music artists on newgrounds who had real talent and made their own amazing songs, whether original or vg remixes, had a point and that if i wanted to be a part of the community that would be tolerated, let alone respected, i had to set midi-ripping behind me and start actually learning the craft and making my own stuff. i had a great time on the audio portal then. i had even more fun than before because i was actually participating in the artistic community now! even if i wasn’t really all that good! and i was getting better and better every day!
but i could have gone down a different path. i could have doubled down and refused to grow. and if i’d done that, i’d have ended up like the people today who are doing the same thing with ai art that i was once doing with midis from vgmusic.
because it isn’t about art for them, actually. it’s about instant gratification. midi-ripping excited me because i could create music with almost zero effort, skill, or personal investment. i didn’t know enough about the medium or the craft to discern why my output was bad and soulless, i just wanted to take “the easy route” to creating things. and because i was midi-ripping, i wasn’t actually learning anything about composing music, so i wasn’t actually gaining much skill at all. i was stagnating.
this is somewhat related to a type of person that shows up a lot in creative communities (or rather kramers into them and gets promptly laughed out of them), commonly called the “ideas guy.” they have all these ideas but none of the skills to execute on them, so they look for people or software tools that can do all the work for them for free. they don’t want to write, they just want to “have written.” they don’t want to make a video game, they want to “have made a video game.” these people typically either grow up and realize that there’s no magic button to press that can make your creation for you and they can’t get people to slavishly recreate their grand vision for free, or they go on to become incompetent project managers so they can live out their dream of telling people to do things for them.
and similarly, fourteen-year-old me didn’t want to make music, i wanted to “have made music,” without learning how to actually create something and express myself through it—which requires a lot of practicing and learning and other things that take time and effort. this is the same thing i see with ai art aficionados who cling to the title of “artist.” they want to “have made” art without actually going through the training and soul-searching that it takes to actually express their ideas or the frustration that often comes with trying to bring those ideas to life. that leads to bad art.
if you want to write, you have to learn how to write. you have to keep writing stuff. if you want to make music or mod a video game or any other artistic pursuit, you have to learn how to do those things and you have to practice them. you don’t have to be good at any of these things, you don’t even have to be competent, but you still have to do it. that’s how you learn how to really express yourself and what’s in your heart, and how you learn to refine your creativity and create better and better things.
that’s not to say that the technology, in a vacuum, is entirely useless. at some point in the future, ai could be a useful tool for helping artists augment their works and push their vision even farther. there are a lot of tools like that already for all kinds of artistic expression. going back to music, i can’t play guitar and i don’t have an orchestra at my beck and call, but i have sample libraries that can make reasonable facsimiles of those things, and although they do a lot of work for me, they also demand their own unique skill sets to use effectively, and i’ve put a lot of work into learning how to use them as well as i can even though i'm still nowhere near as good as a professional.
and on the topic of video games, rpg maker helped me make my own video game without knowing how to code, and sure it wasn’t a big video game and it was a bit janky, but it was hard work, i was satisfied with it once i’d finished, and it gave me a lot of insight into what making video games feels like (i.e. frustrating) and taught me to have more appreciation for my favorite video games when i play them.
maybe someday ai can be that sort of tool, but i feel extremely pessimistic about it at this point in time. for a lot of reasons. but especially because its biggest proponents right now tend to sound like people who were like me once and just never grew up.
i know it’s hard. i know it’s embarrassing to start out at something and be bad at it, especially if you’re older. i know that making stuff is frustrating and every creator has wished they could pull what’s in their imagination right out of their head and put it out there without putting in any effort at least once.
but there’s no shortcut that can take you right from the starting line to the finish line. there are things you can do that can help you run faster or farther or make running easier, but you still have to run.

[S] Jade: Open FreshJamz!
You open the FRESHJAMZ MEDIA PLAYER and add Dave's remix to the playlist.
Songs used in this page: Showtime Remix by Gabe Nezovic, Aggrieve Remix by Gabe Nezovic, Verdancy (Bassline) by Kalibration, Potential Verdancy by Robert J! Lake, Ohgodwhat by Nick Smalley, Ohgodwhat Remix by Michael Guy bowman, Rediscover Fusion by BurnedKirby, Crystalanthemums by Alexander Rosetti, and Explore Remix by Gabe Nezovic
Song commentary for Ohgodwhat:
Nick Smalley:
WELL
It was 2008 and I was a silly little boy and thought ORGMaker was good-ass music program, so I decided to make a song in it. Half an hour later forged this booger of a song. Seriously. It took half an hour to make this. Then I saw that THE HUSS posted something about a Problem Sleuth opening? So I was like damn that’s bananas I’ll show him up! (wow look at this nerd thinking he can actually make music)
I sent it to his email and like a day later he sent one back asking about the music team. FLATTERING, IT WAS. So I was like sure sign me up g homey dog slice foo
And that’s the story of how I got on the music team.
Oh wait. You just wanted Ohgodwhat.
(ps that’s what it was called when i made it too)
Song commentary for Crystalanthemums:
Alexander Rosetti:
I composed this one intending it to be the theme of Jade's land. This is the reason Jit has gone on the record as saying Crystamenthequins was intended to accompany Jade's island being destroyed/her entering her land (I'm pretty sure that's how he described it) was because of this song. It's actually a really simple tune, and I've wanted to expand on it for ages but never got around to it. The entire piece consists of the same simple chord progression, but it's a good, if played out, progression. That and the beautiful harmonies one is guaranteed to find with it is why I think this is one of my more popular songs. It's not as well-composed as I'd like it to be, but it is definitely catchy. And Radiation was responsible for the name, jokingly calling it "crystalanthemums" after I described it sound like a crystalline flower. I decided that was as good a name as any, and I've had the pleasure of infecting its two remixes with such silly-sounding titles.

Author commentary: With the (playable!) FRESHJAMZ playlist, we are provided with the implication that these are all songs produced by the kids collaboratively. Their icons indicate who was involved with the songs. Just another sign earlier in the story that these kids have some musical talent and this is the sort of thing they do with their spare time. This is one of those things that starts getting buried as we move along. For instance, we never quite get to see God Tier Jade picking up the old bass and rocking out. Which is a shame.

Got a few asks which served as a reminder that a while ago, I promised you guys some album reviews! Let's do a couple now.
Homestuck's first album features a lot of songs that we're going to see remixed later on. We've already heard quite a few versions of Showtime and Sburban Jungle, and it seems like a lot of the comic's more 'iconic' songs came from here.
This is a very 'video-gamey' album, featuring songs like Harlequin and Showtime (Original Mix) - which makes sense, since Act 1 was when the comic was trying its hardest to be a video game parody.
My overall impression is that if this was any other comic, this would be an excellent soundtrack - but because this is Homestuck, it serves as excellent raw material for the fantastic soundtrack we're going to be getting later on.
Top tracks: Sburban Jungle (Brief Mix), Showtime (Original Mix), Skies of Skaia, Aggrieve and Sburban Countdown, which I previously praised for how well it evoked the mood of its scene.
Vol. 2 is a nice evolution of the musical style we first heard in the previous volume. It's clear the music team were getting the hang of the 'sound' of Homestuck by point, and it shows.
The second half of Harlequin (Rock Version) is great, and I’m sad it didn’t show up in the animation. Upward Movement’s intro is also new, and I didn’t recognize the song at first. It’s very different from the comic version, and feels a lot more experimental.
This album features four Bill Bolin tracks - several of which were referenced later on, by tracks that are still featured in the comic. I wonder if that was controversial?
This album also features several of the tracks from Jade's FreshJamz account, which the kids canonically produced together. They're definitely newbie tracks, but they have a lot of potential. Hopefully they'll return to this endeavor when we're done with all this Sburb nonsense, because this is clearly where their real talent lies.
Top tracks: Upward Movement, Explore, and Jade's sick bassline from Verdancy.
Vol. 3 features more FreshJamz tracks and a few new remixes. I particularly like Harleboss, a boss remix of a track that probably wasn't intended to have a boss remix. It sounds like the theme for a bar fight in a tavern run by clowns.
Dissension is excellent. It sounds awfully mournful for a Guardian battle track, until you take a closer look at Grandpa, and realize why it has the tone it does. We're also treated to a remix of Dissension, which sounds like the track that would play if Jade fought a living Grandpa. That's an AU I'd love to see.
Top tracks: Dissension (Remix), Ohgodwhat (Remix), and Pony Chorale - a track whose final few seconds might just have featured Rose's canonical voice.
That's it for this episode of Tunes with Sally. Next time we'll be reviewing Vol. 4, Vol. 5 and Alternia!
#deep dives#homestuck liveblog#full liveblog#act 5#music#alternia the album not the planet#the planet gets a rating of dystopia/10

MUSIC PLAYER!!! Okay so I didn't listen to all the songs fully but this is really neat! I like how there's icons to show who's song is who's/if the song was remixed by someone. That's really neat. I assuming that this playlist is also chronological and I think that it's neat that you can see some progression when it comes to Dave's music, the Showtime and Aggrieve remixes are nice but I feel like Rediscover Fusion, Crystalanthemums and Explore Remix are better than both of them. I might be wrong there but I think that's neat.

Explore Remix (This Time It's Wobbly)
(page 827-835)
This is a neat segment, opening and closing with pesterlogs we’ve seen before, filling in some gaps and bookending three really important things: Dave’s monologue, Jade’s FreshJamz, and the Midnight Crew. One small thing stands out - ‘He is undoubtedly gallivanting around his house in a state of barely restrained birthday mirth.’ (p.827) is a strange perspective on John, and sounds more like Jade herself. She doesn’t recognize him in the Midnight Crew comic (p.831) either, so she doesn’t know what he looks like and also doesn’t really see below the surface of his personality.
Dave’s monologue. Dave messages Jade at 23:14 Jade time which is 05:14 Dave time which means this guy does NOT have a good sleep schedule. In his living situation it’s not surprising if he struggles to sleep due to always having one eye open for the next trap. Dave clearly leans on his friends a lot, and they have subtly different roles – John is who he messages about an unexpected juice windfall, Rose is the person he pesters ‘like clockwork’ (p.415) because he can be honest with her about his feelings, and when he can’t sleep, he wants to talk to Jade.
Jade also helps Dave with the self-exploration he’s otherwise not comfortable with. He’s clearly joking when he’s creating his kangaroo rat fursona Akwete Purrmusk, but he’s still creating them. Jade has a FurAffinity account (p.834) and she’s gotta get Dave on there too so that he can start making ‘ironic’ furry art so many layers deep that it becomes sincere.
Dave – and more importantly Andrew Hussie – should not be using a homophobic slur on page 829, as it’s not in the context of reclaiming it. However. As a person who does sometimes reclaim that word I found it a pretty funny variant of the act 2 title [cw slurs if you click that].
FreshJamz! Jade’s music player confirms that all four kids compose music. John and Rose wrote their own themes, ‘Showtime’ and ‘Aggrieve’, both of which have been remixed by Dave. Jade composed ‘Explore’, which was featured in ‘WV: Ascend’ (I will stop talking about Jade-WV connections when they stop showing up) and now Dave has remixed this too. Dave and Jade co-wrote the top tier ‘Crystalanthemums’, and it is very cute to imagine the two of them trading this file back and forth and building on each other’s work. Jade is not a gamer, and John, Rose and Dave have spent a lot of time playing games together, so this media player establishes a shared interest between Jade and the rest of the group.
Midnight Crew. I don’t think page 831 breaks the fourth wall, more like it puts two or three additional fourth walls up, and man do they destroy the image quality. This image doesn’t correspond to an exact page or quote in ‘real’ Homestuck, but it’s based on the events of p.163-165. I think it’s VERY relevant that John is referred to as ‘GT’ here, which are the Pesterchum initials he would have had if he followed his friends’ pattern (TT, TG and GG). And this is happening five pages after we’ve seen a bunch of new chumhandles.
We currently know of [GT/EB], TT, TG, GG, CG, AG, TA, TC and CA. Using only G, T, C and A, we are missing seven possible combinations: GC, GA, AT, AC, AA, CC and CT (which is my initials so I could get assigned a chumhandle!) I think four of these could correspond to the Midnight Crew, but that still leaves eight unaccounted for characters. It may be a coincidence, but these four letters correspond to the base pairs of DNA, and ‘biologist’ and ‘geneticist’ both show up in chumhandles. I’m uncertain of what this means right now, but there is a laboratory near Rose’s house decorated with the Skaian spirograph. If that’s where the mausoleum tunnel leads, that might give us more information.
I think the Midnight Crew is objectively a worse comic than Homestuck. It’s on Act 1031 (10/31, Halloween) but the story is still establishing its titular characters and having them hit each other with sticks. No wonder Dave’s fallen off this so fast. But I also think this is going to become important, and these stories are deeply entangled – Midnight Crew is a story within Homestuck but Homestuck is a story within the Midnight Crew and it’s not impossible that the Homestuck we are reading could also be zoomed out to find another Midnight Crew. More concretely, the player submitting commands could be one of these four characters, similarly shiny and carapaced to WV, the commander we’ve seen.
The beta kids are four thirteen year olds, and the Midnight Crew are four suits of thirteen playing cards – so they’re like a counterpart group, the after dark, morally questionable version. Time is complex in this story but it would be fun if any time it hits midnight for a Homestuck character, the story switches over to the Midnight Crew before the sun comes up, as is suggested by the sun/moon clock at the start of page 833 – something like the Flatland MSPA[LINK].
MSPA, where Midnight Crew and Homestuck are hosted, is also the only piece of media all four kids are into – John, Dave and Jade have all looked at Midnight Crew (p.112, 327, 833), while John and Rose both have Problem Sleuth art (p.11, 224). The Problem Sleuth characters also show up briefly in Act 1031, indicating that it was the previous MSPA in this universe as well as ours. So my new theory is that John, Rose, Dave and Jade all met on the MSPA forums prior to or at the start of Problem Sleuth, giving them over a year before the story starts to form close friendships to the extent of exchanging addresses and birthday gifts. Given that the forums are where commands are submitted in our world, it would be a cool addition to the many meta layers.
> Jade: Navigate to MSPA Forums and submit a command for the Midnight Crew.

Started by Niklink in 2011, and now curated by yours truly, The Homestuck Sound Test is an unofficial collection of several otherwise scattered, and, in some cases, unavailable Homestuck musical tracks, primarily those created by the Homestuck Music Team.
The Sound Test contains:
Disc 1 - Unreleased Homestuck Music (78 tracks): Music that has been used within Homestuck proper but has not been officially released on an album.
Disc 2 - Removed Homestuck Music (25 Tracks): Music that was officially released on albums but later removed from said albums. Sburban Jungle’s brief mix from Act 1, an Aggrieve remix, and removed tracks from Bill Bolin, SolusLunes, and Seijen. Does not include the ColoUrs and Mayhem A tracks that turned out to be plagiarized from the Frozen Synapse OST. If you want those tracks, go buy the Frozen Synapse OST. Also includes a backwards, amplified audio version of “null” from Volume 8 (not related to Null from Song of Skaia). In case you’re wondering, “null” as originally released and without the sound amplified was just 8 seconds of seeming silence.
Disc 3 - Unreleased Homestuck Music Team Music (773 tracks): Homestuck-related and/or Homestuck-inspired music made by the Music Team members that have not been used in Homestuck proper and have not officially been released on an album; also includes beta versions of tracks and unfinished WIPs. Includes beta versions, remasters, and remixes of tracks from official Homestuck albums that may not have been made by official Music Team members (read: ColoUrs and Mayhem tracks). Homestuck fan-music by Hiveswap Music Team members (i.e James Roach) is also included
Disc 4 - Unreleased Hiveswap Music (7 Tracks): Essentially the same thing as Disc 1, but for Hiveswap instead of Homestuck.
Disc 5 - Unreleased Hiveswap Music Team Music (22 tracks): Essentially the same thing as Disc 3, but for Hiveswap instead of Homestuck. Hiveswap fan-music by Homestuck Music Team members is also included.
Disc 6 - Unreleased Friendsim and Pesterquest Music (26 tracks): Same thing as Discs 1 and 4 but for Hiveswap Friendsim and Homestuck Pesterquest.
Disc 7 - Unreleased Friendsim and Pesterquest Music Team Music (12 tracks): Same thing as Discs 3 and 5, but for Hiveswap Friendsim and Homestuck Pesterquest.
Unavailable Homestuck Albums (2 albums, 39 tracks total): Albums that were previously officially sold and have not yet been re-uploaded for purchase.
-Squiddles! (23 tracks)
A spin-off album about Squiddles, an in-universe cartoon about adorable sea creatures.
-The Wanderers (16 tracks)
An album about the Exiles of the B2 session.
Unofficial Homestuck Music Team Albums (3 albums, 28 tracks total, 1 folder with MIDI files, 11 files total): Free unofficial Homestuck albums by members of the Music Team.
-A Plumbthroat Christmas (5 tracks)
A jolly tale of Squiddles and Yuletide cheer by Alexander Rosetti. Not actually jolly or cheerful. If you like musicals about sentient cephalopods devouring human corpses, then this album is for you, I guess.
-Seer (13 tracks)
Tracks from a scrapped Rose Lalonde concept album by Thomas Ferkol. Given the circumstances of their origins, I felt it was best to keep them as a single album rather than cram them all into the Sound Test’s Disc 3. While neither “The Seer and the Tribesmen” or the full version of “The Metamorphosis [of Rose Lalonde]” are included, they are available on the Land of Fan and Music albums (Land of Fans and Music 2 and Land of Fans and Music 3 respectively).
-The Baby Is You (10 tracks)
Simultaneously the worst fucking thing Toby Fox has ever made and his magnum opus that even Undertale cannot surpass, even mentioning this legendary trash opera on the now-defunct MSPA forums was grounds for a ban. Warning: Contains male pregnancy (mpreg), heavy implications of underage sex, implications of incest, time travel, a clip of Karkat saying “MMMMMMMMMMM” that was used in the Act 6 Act 6 Act 1 opening flash, vore, the answer to the Ultimate Riddle, and other absolutely awful shit that has no business being in the Sound Test, or indeed, anywhere. Listen at your own risk, if you dare.
-Tomb of the Ancestors (MIDI Files) (11 files)
MIDI files for most of the tracks from Tomb of the Ancestors, by Kalibration. The actual album is available at http://dl.skaia.net/albums.
Dave’s Phat Beat Machine (16 tracks): 16 of the sickest, illest and dopest beats ever to grace Homestuck page 2238. These certified “Phat Beats” dropped by Dave Strider’s AKAI MPC-1000 SAMPLER do not include easter egg bonus songs on said page. They also don’t include Bill Bolin’s long-removed contributions to the Phat Beat machine, because those are already included on Disc 2.
That’s 1026 tracks total in the Homestuck Sound Test 12/20/2020 Edition, not including MIDIs.
Several tracks on Disc 3 are currently uncredited. If you are the artist of any of them, or know who the artist is, or see a track that is credited incorrectly anywhere on the Sound Test, please send a message to my Tumblr and I will happily fix the mistake.
Enjoy your listening, and don’t forget to reblog this post to spread the word!
