Ever heard of Mamiwata? 🧜‍♀️ An intriguing mermaid legend, she's a symbol of motherhood, protection, and prosperity, deeply revered in African tales and spiritual beliefs.
Mamiwata's captivating appearance, blending a woman with a fish or serpent, symbolizes her strong bond with water and the incredible qualities she embodies. As a guardian of
motherhood, she offers a shield and empowerment to moms and kids. Her spiritual guidance shields her followers from negativity while also showering them with wealth and abundance. 💪💰
Mamiwata fiercely safeguards the ocean's treasures, reminding us of our duty to protect these crucial waters.🧜🌊✨

This Saturday! We’re proud to present a 30th Anniversary celebration of John Steptoe’s MUFARO’S BEAUTIFUL DAUGHTERS with three award-winning authors & illustrators on Saturday, July 20th from 1-3pm. • In 1987, the late and legendary John Steptoe published MUFARO’S Beautiful Daughters, a Cinderella tale against the backdrop of Zimbabwe. When published, the New York Times stated, “Mr. Steptoe’s...illustrations have a muted brilliance and luminosity.” Award-winning artist Steptoe’s rich cultural imagery of Africa earned him the Coretta Scott King Award and the 1988 Caldecott Honor. The book also went on to win the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award and was featured on Reading Rainbow. • Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, Baby Says, and Stevie were reissued last year with a new introduction from Mr. Steptoe’s daughter, Bweela Steptoe. We’ll gather with Ms. Steptoe, Pat Cummings, Jerry Pinkney, and Tiffany D. Jackson (2019 winner of the John Steptoe New Talent Award). The panel will discuss what has changed in children’s publishing for authors and illustrators of color and the journey ahead. Saturday, July 20th from 1-3pm at our 18th St store. Happy Halloween! We can't wrap up #blackspeculativefiction month and our celebration of #blackwitches without mentioning the one and only @therealmaryjblige and her role in #TheWiz. She splayed this entire look, and for her to play Evilene, she looked and acted good! I had the opportunity to see this live and it was a great musical! Don't sleep on the Queen's acting skills! #thewizardofoz #thewizmusical #maryjblige #maryjbligefans #blackmusicmatters #easeondowntheroad #hoodooheritagemonth #afrofuturism #blackspeculativefictionmonth #blackwitchery #evilene #conjurewoman #blackwitchesofinstagram #witchcore #rootworkersofinstagram #africanfolklore #blackmediums #voodooqueen #voodoo https://www.instagram.com/p/CVtkxWsJosM/?utm_medium=tumblr
