France to trial no-deal Brexit customs system at Calais
France will begin trials from mid-September in Calais of the digital customs system that it’s going to put in place for freight crossing the Channel if the UK leaves the EU with out a deal.
Asserting the plans to check the system forward of a potential no-deal Brexit on 31 October, Gérald Darmanin, the French minister in control of customs, informed French radio station RTL: “For a month, we’re going to fake there may be Brexit. For lots of firms, we’re going to have a kind of costume rehearsal in order that we’re prepared on the finish of October.”
His feedback got here forward of a gathering with Michael Gove, the UK minister co-ordinating “no-deal” Brexit planning, in Calais on Friday afternoon to showcase France’s preparations. These embody 700 additional customs officers and a “good border” to ease the burden on the 100,000 French firms that Paris estimates commerce with the UK.
The UK economic system is closely reliant on highway freight that comes from Calais — by way of ferry to Dover and thru the Channel tunnel to Folkestone — carrying just-in-time and perishable gadgets, corresponding to automotive elements and meals. Below a no-deal Brexit newly launched customs controls may create a choke level as lorries converge on both aspect of the Channel.
A latest leak of the UK’s contingency planning for a no-deal Brexit, referred to as Operation Yellowhammer, discovered that between 50 and 85 per cent of lorries travelling between Calais and Dover weren’t anticipated to be prepared to deal with new French customized controls. The paperwork estimated that this might result in a discount in visitors flows of between 40 and 60 per cent.
For a month, we’re going to fake there may be Brexit. For lots of firms, we’re going to have a kind of costume rehearsal in order that we’re prepared on the finish of October
“Our obligation is to organize our nation for all situations,” Mr Darmanin added on Twitter. “To be prepared on D-Day to make sure the graceful circulation of commerce, together with in case of Brexit with out an settlement.”
He stated the French system would enable firms to fill out an internet declaration of products heading for the UK earlier than the vans set off. This might generate documentation, together with bar codes, that may feed into the digital customs system and mix with quantity plate recognition know-how.
“With out stopping on the border, your items will go on to Britain . . . There will likely be no queues of dozens and dozens of kilometres,” stated Mr Darmanin.
France is more and more anticipating a no-deal Brexit. “Given how issues are going, it’s possible,” Aurelie de Montchalin, France’s junior minister for European Affairs, stated on BFM tv on Friday.
The chance of a no-deal Brexit has jumped sharply since Boris Johnson, the UK prime minister, stated he would droop parliament for a month, leaving lawmakers much less time to scupper his plans to take the UK out of the bloc on October 31 no matter whether or not he can attain settlement with the EU.
With no transition interval, UK companies must begin buying and selling with the EU on World Commerce Group phrases from November 1, with items theoretically topic to tariffs in each instructions as a substitute of passing freely throughout the customs union.
“It’s merely extra bureaucratic than when [we trade with] Belgium or Spain,” stated Mr Darmanin, likening the commerce phrases that Britain may face with the EU on the French border to these France has with South Africa.

India’s Vistara airline, a joint venture between TATA Sons and Singapore Airlines, has appointed APG as its representation company in France. Based in New Delhi, Vistara started operations five years ago and today connects 34 cities and operates more than 200 flights a day with a fleet of 31 Airbus A320 and 9 Boeing 737-800NG aircraft. Vistara is hoping to have a total of 42 aircraft in its fleet by March 2020, including India’s first Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner and the Airbus A321neo.

The airline is on course to induct more than 50 new aircraft, a mix of narrow-body and wide-body, within the next four years, moving forward in its vision of becoming a global airline of choice. Vinod Kannan, Chief Commercial Officer, Vistara, said, “We’re delighted to join hands with APG to lead our sales and servicing activities in France, an important travel source market for India. With Vistara’s sales presence now in France, more travellers will enjoy seamless connectivity on India’s only five-star airline.” Sandrine de Saint Sauveur, President & CEO APG Inc, said: “APG is delighted to start a cooperation with Vistara in France. The links between India and France are strong and I believe this is a start to a success story between our two companies." Vistara is available on all the GDS under the code UK-228. Air India has renewed its distribution agreement with Amadeus. Travel sellers in India will only have access to the airline’s pure full international content, while travel sellers in the rest of the world will have access to the full range of Air India’s content, both domestic and international. Meenakshi Mallik, Commercial Director, Air India said, “We are pleased to renew our relationship with Amadeus to support our growth strategy globally and hope that this is the first step in our new journey together. We look forward to working closer with Amadeus to support agencies and travelers in the future.”

Amadeus has signed a number of important strategic deals in India in recent months, with Air India added to a list of airlines that include Spice Jet and Vistara. Indigo and Go Air also have their IT agreements with Navitaire, an Amadeus company. In addition, Amadeus has strategic partnerships with some of the largest travel sellers in India, such as MakeMyTrip, Goibibo, Yatra, and PayTM; and some of the major hotel groups and aggregators in India such as Oberoi, Taj, ITC Hotels and The Leela Palaces. From an airport IT perspective, Indira Gandhi International Airport and Rajiv Gandhi International Airport also use Amadeus’ airport technology. Cyril Tetaz, Executive Vice President, Airlines, Asia Pacific, Amadeus said, “We are glad to once again work with Air India and play a positive role in the airline’s growth strategy. Amadeus’ simple, open and agile system will allow Air India to innovate, experiment and collaborate to create new products which will add value to customers and create upsell or cross-sell opportunities.” See latest Travel News, Interviews, Podcasts and other news regarding: Amadeus, Air India, GDS, NDC.
