Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure (a couple of people traveling through time in a phone booth. Why does that sound familiar?), conclusion

PREVIOUSLY ON...
Bill S. Preston, esq. and Ted "Theodore" Logan (a pair of slacker high school students in San Dimas, California, collectively known as the soon-to-be-famous-in-their-own-mind band Wyld Stallyns) are about to fail history, which would flunk them out of high school. Ted's father, the local Sheriff, has threatened to ship Ted off to an Alaskan military school should this happen (and has, in fact already started the ball rolling)
Only an A+ in their final report (what would various historical figures think of modern San Dimas, given orally to an auditorium of their classmates) will save them. There's just one issue: it's tomorrow and they haven't started it yet.
Enter Rufus, a visitor from the future, who gives Bill and Ted a time machine (that looks like a phone booth) to do research for their report. Bill and Ted use the time machine to collect eight historical figures: Napoleon (who is currently in modern San Dimas and being looked after by Ted's brother Deacon), Billy the Kid, Socrates, Sigmund Freud, Ludvig von Beethoven, Joan of Arc, Genghis Khan, and Abraham Lincoln.
They also take a side trip to medieval England, where they meet two daughters of a corrupt noble due to be married off to equally corrupt (and ugly) nobles. Naturally, Bill and Ted fall in love and try to rescue them, but are captured. Fortunately, they escape, but the booth's time antenna is damaged in the escape and the booth is out of control!
Now, on with our story!

However, after a bit of jury-rigging…

…they’re finally on their way back.
They last at the Circle K the previous evening (where they met themselves) Hopefully they remember what they said to themselves.

Yep, they did!
Rufus takes them aside and tells them they need to dial one number higher to get to the present. However, instead of the 10 hours Ted thinks they have left, they only have 2 hours before they have to present their report!

Ted quickly reminds himself to wind his watch, then he and Bill head to the present to get started on their report.

…and land in Bill’s backyard. Bill introduces the gang to Missy and they all get a ride to the mall. They then leave the gang to learn about modern life while they fetch Napoleon as the presentations begin at San Dimas High. However…

Meanwhile at the mall, Beethoven has found the music store (and its selection of keyboards), Genghis has found a sporting good store, Joan has found an aerobics class, Lincoln has found a photography studio, while Billy, Socrates, and Freud are hanging out at the food court.
Now, what do you suppose happens when these guys are left unattended for so long?

With that, the boys’ history report is under arrest and carted off to the sheriff’s offices for processing as it gets closer to when Bill & Ted are due to give their history report. The boys get word about what went down at San Dimas Mall and head to the station to explain to Sheriff Logan, but…

…he obviously doesn’t care. Therefore, they concoct a plan to, after they free the gang, go back to before Sheriff Logan lost his keys to the jail cells, then steal them and stash them in the bushes in order to free the gang. They then look in the bushes and find the keys!

With that, the boys sneak in, but they won’t be able to get past the entryway without Sheriff Logan seeing them, so Bill has the plan to grab Ted’s tape recorder when the travel back to get the keys to create a distraction.

With that most excellent distraction, the boys enter the jail cells. Problem is, Sheriff Logan wasn’t distracted for long and finds them in the cell area. Ted makes a note to remember to get a trash can as well for…

With that, the gang manages to escape to Missy’s car and they speed off to San Dimas High!

Genghis Khan continued his conquest of Asia, though he did attempt to replicate the skateboard, the metal club, and Twinkies, but each ended in failure.
Joan of Arc did indeed try to start an aerobics program upon her return to France, but she was burned at the stake as a heretic as a result.
Ludwig von Beethoven’s hearing was severely damaged as a result of all of the loud music he listened to while in San Dimas, causing him to go deaf.
Napoleon did try the “water slide” strategy, which failed due to fiberglass not having been invented yet. When he left exile following his defeat, he attempted to invade Waterloo to get the materials, but that failed as well.
Sigmund Freud knew what his contemporaries would say if he said anything about his adventures, so kept his story silent to his dying day.
Finally, Socrates did tell his contemporaries about his adventures. They deemed him a heretic (or whatever the ancient Greek equivalent would be) and forced him to add hemlock to his drink.

An Anti-aging Antidote for Arteries
ISS - International Space Station logo. April 11, 2019 When astronauts return to Earth, their carotid arteries, which carry blood to the head and neck, appear to have aged 20 to 30 years. Artery walls become stiffer and thicker in space, the same as when people grow older on Earth. Arterial and other aging-related changes seem to accelerate during time spent in space. For example, after six months in space, astronauts also show signs associated with developing insulin resistance.

A number of earlier investigations aboard the International Space Station first recognized this accelerated aging in the carotid artery, representing a potential significant long-term risk for astronauts. Results from two investigations, Vascular and Vessel Imaging, suggest that a daily session of aerobic or cardio exercise is not sufficient to counteract what amounts to an otherwise sedentary lifestyle in microgravity. One of the latest investigations into this phenomenon is Vascular Aging, sponsored by the Canadian Space Agency (CSA). It uses ultrasounds of arteries, blood samples, oral glucose tolerance tests, and wearable sensors to look for early indicators of cardiovascular aging. The resulting data may point to mechanisms to reduce the risk of such aging. “You can take extremely healthy, fit astronauts and put them in an environment that restricts their ability to do daily exercise, and they run the risk of developing insulin resistance that on Earth could lead to Type II diabetes,” said principal investigator Richard L. Hughson of Schlegel-University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. “We know that on Earth, Type II diabetes is strongly associated with sedentary behavior.”

A special shirt provided by the CSA, the Bio-Monitor, records the physical activity of astronauts during the day along with their heart rate and respiration. Other devices take regular blood pressure readings and estimate arterial stiffness. These measurements enable researchers to assess relationships between an individual’s metabolism, or ability to regulate blood sugar in the body, and aging-like symptoms of the arteries and bones. Crew members also take blood samples so researchers can identify and detect biomarkers that may predict early signs of cardiovascular aging. The investigation takes the same measurements before, during and after spaceflight. “We believe we’ll see higher levels of glucose for a period of time after each meal, similar to that seen in people with Type II diabetes on Earth,” Hughson said. “Those elevated levels can cause glucose to bind to protein molecules in the blood and to proteins in the blood vessel walls, which contributes to arterial stiffness.” That effect is largely irreversible, but others are likely reversible once astronauts return to Earth.

You have to be active for different periods throughout the day.” Changes in diet, such as decreasing salt and cholesterol, also can contribute to vascular health, improving some markers of arterial stiffness. A better understanding of the daily interaction of exercise and diet can help lead to developing preventative measures that delay or even reverse some of the effects of aging, both in space and on Earth. Another CSA-sponsored study underway by members of the same research team, Vascular Echo, monitors arterial stiffness for up to six months post-flight to help determine whether space-related changes are reversible. “The idea is to keep blood glucose regulation optimal in our daily lives, both with physical activity and diet interventions,” Hughson said. “Fortunately, we expect the blood glucose response to recover fairly quickly when they get back to Earth and resume normal activities.” Take that, old and stiff arteries. Extensive extensions of peat spreads to the northern end of our planet, organic material accumulated too moist to decompose. Although peatlands account for only 3 percent of the total land surface, they store a third of their land carbon. And climate scientists worry about them: as the Arctic warms, dries and releases massive amounts of carbon. People are accelerating this process by draining peatlands and turning them into agricultural fields, releasing even more greenhouse gases.
In a recent one paper in the magazine Scientific advancesResearchers have put a large number of climatic effects on agriculture in these areas: by modeling the historical land use, they estimated that between 1750 and 2010, cultivated northern peatlands released 40 billion of tons of carbon.
“When the peat bog dries out (i.e., people dig drainage ditches to lower the water table from a peat bog area to make it suitable for cultivation), the peat soil is aerated and the aerobic microbial decay of organic matter, which needs oxygen, resulting in the release of carbon from peat into the atmosphere, “lead author Chunjing Qiu of the French Climate Science Laboratory wrote in an email to WIRED and the environment and the University of Paris-Saclay. Any new plant material that grows and dies in it will fall quickly, releasing carbon, as there is not enough water to slow down the processing of organic material into CO.2.
Traditionally, climate scientists have focused on the amount of carbon we could lose from deforestation, but have not often investigated the effects of turning peatlands into fields. “We haven’t always done a good job of really explaining how much carbon could be lost from the land system, “says soil scientist Maria Strack, who studies peatlands at the University of Waterloo, but was not involved in the research.” Particularly when we’re turning peatlands into farmland, the size of this organic soil stock is so big that maybe we’ve been really underestimating the contribution of these soil carbon losses to our greenhouse gas emissions. ”
Humanity, then, is turning a critical deposit of carbon into one font of emissions. Of course, there are underlying social factors for this conversion: as the population continues to grow, nations must feed more people with the same amount of land. Economically, it makes sense for farmers to be turning what were once wetlands into farmland. “It creates quite fertile soil, but at the same time you’re losing carbon,” says biogeochemist Chris Evans of the UK Center for Ecology and Hydrology, who was not involved in the new paper. “Because so much carbon is being lost in some of these landscapes, they’re really kind of empty carbon storage.”
Agricultural processes only accelerate this loss. Working dried peat allows more oxygen to penetrate, which further favors the processing of organic material in CO2. Responsible microbes will proliferate even more if farmers add fertilizers that provide them with additional nutrients. In an area of ​​healthy, moist peat bogs, the plant material it produces should stick together and, once it dies, re-enter the wet soil, where carbon will be trapped for perhaps thousands of years. But on a farm, the crops produced by the land are uprooted from the land and taken for sale.
Farmers who work an actively cultivated peat bog will water it, keeping the soil at least moist enough for the plants to grow. But if the earth is later abandoned and left to dry completely, it will become a nefarious fuel for forest fires. Women Are Naturally Fitter Than Men, Study Says

Conventional wisdom holds that men have the natural advantage when it comes to physical ability. But in one key measure of fitness, women actually come out on top, finds a small new study published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism.
Researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada directed nine women and nine men—all 18-30 year olds who were of similar body mass index—to walk on the treadmill. After a short warm-up, they were asked to walk at gradually increasing speeds and inclines, going until they had reached 80% of their maximum heart rate. Each person wore a face mask to measure how much oxygen they used and how much carbon dioxide they produced.
“The specific measurement we did in this study was to look at how quickly oxygen uptake increases when you go from a rest to exercise transition,” says study author Richard Hughson, kinesiology professor at the University of Waterloo. “If people are unfit, they adapt more slowly to exercise, they perceive it as being a greater load and therefore they back off and they become progressively less fit.”
In that way, Hughson says, oxygen uptake is a great indicator of overall physical fitness—and one in which women excel. The researchers found that women adjusted to exercise after about 30 seconds, while men took 42 seconds. That translates to a roughly 30% faster rate of oxygen processing, and a clear advantage when it comes to physical efficiency. The researchers also found that the female athletes were better at transporting oxygen to tissues throughout their bodies, and that their tissues, in turn, were better at using the extra oxygen.
So while men may be inherently a little stronger and faster than women, they can’t claim to be universally fitter, Hughson says.
“Fitness can be defined by that maximal aerobic power, or it can be defined by some other indicators,” he says. “If you monitor how quickly a person adapts to an exercise level, it really is an indication of fitness and health.”
Next up, says lead author Thomas Beltrame, the research team plans to expand the research to include elite athletes, not just recreational exercisers. “In the future,” Beltrame wrote in an email, “studies are needed to determine if our results from recreationally active men and women, who were matched for fitness, will also apply to the fittest women compared to the fittest men.”

According to a recent study reported by The Independent, it is claimed and studied that young women could be aerobically fitter than young men.
Though many previous studies claimed for men to be stronger and fitter than women, this recent study by researchers at the University of Waterloo in Canada, it was found that women are able to draw more oxygen from the blood at a faster rate, meaning that they can actually outperform men.
Thomas Beltrame and a team of scientists measured the oxygen uptake and muscle oxygen extraction rates of 18 young men and women while they exercised on a treadmill.
All of the participants were of a similar age and weight in order to ensure for a fair result.
The participants performed three moderate-intensity treadmill exercises, during which time their oxygen processes were closely monitored.
The scientist concluded that the nine female participants processed oxygen at an average rate of 30 per cent times faster than the men while they exercised.
This meant that the females performed better and were less likely to experience muscle fatigue post-workout.
“The findings are contrary to the popular assumption that men’s bodies are more naturally athletic,” explains Beltrame.
“While we don’t know why women have faster oxygen uptake, this study shakes up conventional wisdom.
“It could change the way we approach assessment and athletic training down the road.”
Beltrame’s study is one of the first to examine oxygen uptake specifically in young healthy adults and he had originally thought that the males would exhibit a faster aerobic system than the men.
His findings go against previous studies which claim that men are naturally more athletic than women due to innate discrepancies in height, weight, body fat and muscle mass.
The study was published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism.

The findings showed that the faster processing of oxygen enabled the cells of a woman’s body to undergo less strain especially during aerobic exercises — such as cardio, spinning, running, swimming, walking, hiking — which require oxygen to help produce energy. “The findings are contrary to the popular assumption that men’s bodies are more naturally athletic,” said lead author Thomas Beltrame, Professor at the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada. “We found that women’s muscles extract oxygen from the blood faster, which, scientifically speaking, indicates a superior aerobic system,” added Richard Hughson, another researcher at the varsity.  The study, published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition, and Metabolism, compared the oxygen uptake and muscle oxygen extraction between healthy and active young men and women of similar age and weight during a treadmill exercise. Conventional wisdom holds that men have the natural advantage when it comes to physical ability. But in one key measure of fitness, women actually come out on top, finds a small new study published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism.
Researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada directed nine women and nine men—all 18-30 year olds who were of similar body mass index—to walk on the treadmill. After a short warm-up, they were asked to walk at gradually increasing speeds and inclines, going until they had reached 80% of their maximum heart rate. Each person wore a face mask to measure how much oxygen they used and how much carbon dioxide they produced.
“The specific measurement we did in this study was to look at how quickly oxygen uptake increases when you go from a rest to exercise transition,” says study author Richard Hughson, kinesiology professor at the University of Waterloo. “If people are unfit, they adapt more slowly to exercise, they perceive it as being a greater load and therefore they back off and they become progressively less fit.”
In that way, Hughson says, oxygen uptake is a great indicator of overall physical fitness—and one in which women excel. The researchers found that women adjusted to exercise after about 30 seconds, while men took 42 seconds. That translates to a roughly 30% faster rate of oxygen processing, and a clear advantage when it comes to physical efficiency. The researchers also found that the female athletes were better at transporting oxygen to tissues throughout their bodies, and that their tissues, in turn, were better at using the extra oxygen.
So while men may be inherently a little stronger and faster than women, they can’t claim to be universally fitter, Hughson says.
“Fitness can be defined by that maximal aerobic power, or it can be defined by some other indicators,” he says. “If you monitor how quickly a person adapts to an exercise level, it really is an indication of fitness and health.”
Next up, says lead author Thomas Beltrame, the research team plans to expand the research to include elite athletes, not just recreational exercisers. “In the future,” Beltrame wrote in an email, “studies are needed to determine if our results from recreationally active men and women, who were matched for fitness, will also apply to the fittest women compared to the fittest men.”

Women Are Naturally Fitter Than Men, Study Says

Conventional wisdom holds that men have the natural advantage when it comes to physical ability. But in one key measure of fitness, women actually come out on top, finds a small new study published in the journal Applied Physiology, Nutrition and Metabolism.
Researchers from the University of Waterloo in Canada directed nine women and nine men—all 18-30 year olds who were of similar body mass index—to walk on the treadmill. After a short warm-up, they were asked to walk at gradually increasing speeds and inclines, going until they had reached 80% of their maximum heart rate. Each person wore a face mask to measure how much oxygen they used and how much carbon dioxide they produced.
“The specific measurement we did in this study was to look at how quickly oxygen uptake increases when you go from a rest to exercise transition,” says study author Richard Hughson, kinesiology professor at the University of Waterloo. “If people are unfit, they adapt more slowly to exercise, they perceive it as being a greater load and therefore they back off and they become progressively less fit.”
In that way, Hughson says, oxygen uptake is a great indicator of overall physical fitness—and one in which women excel. The researchers found that women adjusted to exercise after about 30 seconds, while men took 42 seconds. That translates to a roughly 30% faster rate of oxygen processing, and a clear advantage when it comes to physical efficiency. The researchers also found that the female athletes were better at transporting oxygen to tissues throughout their bodies, and that their tissues, in turn, were better at using the extra oxygen.
So while men may be inherently a little stronger and faster than women, they can’t claim to be universally fitter, Hughson says.
“Fitness can be defined by that maximal aerobic power, or it can be defined by some other indicators,” he says. “If you monitor how quickly a person adapts to an exercise level, it really is an indication of fitness and health.”
Next up, says lead author Thomas Beltrame, the research team plans to expand the research to include elite athletes, not just recreational exercisers. “In the future,” Beltrame wrote in an email, “studies are needed to determine if our results from recreationally active men and women, who were matched for fitness, will also apply to the fittest women compared to the fittest men.”
