I love this. I want to play with it for days and sort it Into different gradients, and color groups or from favorite to least favorite AAAAAAAAA why is this so beautiful 馃槶馃槶馃槶
I'm in the middle of washing my advent calendar wool from @everspace (except for day 24 and 25, which still need to be spun and plied), so have some pictures! Some of these will be woven into a colourful something, others will be nicer for knitting. Not sure what I wanna knit, though... I ordered yarn from Das Mondschaf to use as a warp and the colours turned out to match really well. So happy about that!
First of all, calendar so far. The one in question is the "das-wollschaf.de" one in "colorful" - less fancy than most calendars out there, but oh so very practical.
Here's days 1-4:
Corriedale, Bergschaf (carded), more of The Accursed, and more Corriedale.
I'll actually have to eat my words a little; I was sure that the orange one was some of the... grittier... dyed Merino, but nope, it's really good Corriedale. So, NOT the exact same fiber I'll get a sample of anyway! Just pretty much the exact same color.
However, The Accursed IS the exact same sparkle merino colorway that I AM getting a sample of, so, lmao.
(I like it. I will never escape the sparkle.)
The Bergschaf stuff is really more for the wet-felters than the spinners; I've worked with a sample of the same stuff in a different color before and it does spin up into something, but it'll always be uneven and more than a little scratchy, so it's not anything you'd wanna make something out of, necessarily. Maybe a knitted and then felted little purse or something? Who knows.
The multicolor Corriedale is something I've been curious about for a long time, but this is the only colorway they have and it's really too pastel for me. Surprisingly soft though; it may not have been something I'd have wanted to buy outright, but I'm really looking forward to spinning up a bit of it.
I'm waiting for a couple more days to decide on what to do with this, partially because I'm working on a bunch of christmas spinning right now, but... soon.
Also, I'm working at a christmas market for the next couple weeks, and Monday was super slow, so I got a bunch of spinning done. So, behold! My last, uh, tour de fleece project is finally done...?
I also got an Ashford bobbin winder as a birthday gift, which is technically for weaving shuttle winding, but with some adjustments...
And so I've been plying since yesterday. And plying.
And plying.
And it's just not getting done :')
I'll keep chipping away at this and keep you updated; I have fun wheel stuff to show off anyway
(spoiler: it is more sparkle merino. it is ALWAYS more sparkle merino)
So, after the cable connecting my needles broke off last night (thus causing like 1/3 of the stitches to fall off and start unraveling) and I got a bit teary and upset, I set the knitting aside. In my emo state I went and made cookies and then ate several cookies ( chocolate chip). Then today I just decided to bit the bullet and rip.
I have decided to go up a needle size to see what that does, and I'll be working on a newer cable, and a longer one at that. in addition, I'm rejigging the color progression. I was going to use mini-skeins in between the rainbow variegated yarn and the knit picks muse yarn ( the one that's more on a white/cream base) but I feel like that might have gotten the mini-skeins a bit lost and mottled. So after a bit of a rethink, I think the above will be the color progression I'll use. It makes use of the mini-skeins nicely and will allow for distinct blocks of color between the other sections. There likely will be distinctly chonkier sections with the knit picks yarn, but it'll work out hopefully.
I needed to put a reference in as to how I wanted the colors to go, so that's what this post is for. It's also a formal request to the universe that, hey please, please, third time's a charm, right? Let this be the time that I can get through the shawl without any (at least major) errors.
While I was mid-sad about the loss of progress I was listening to a podcast with a favorite poet of mine (David Whyte)... And he and the host had mentioned journeys. It got me to thinking that while yes, I have lost progress, that knitting is also supposed to be about the joy of making. And I haven't lost any "making" not really. I will just be -remaking. It's just a slightly unplanned part of the journey, but still part of the journey. That then reminded me of a Shakespeare quote I used to have up on the back of my childhood bedroom door (from Troilus and Cressida), " Things won are done, Joy's soul lies in the doing." Thus, I will try and focus on taking and making joy as I go along, to just enjoy the process, not just the product.
spinning mohair forbday 1 was a new, and very messy, experience but I quite enjoyed it once I figured it out, of course idk if it's really going to stay together until I knit with it, but I got through plying without much splitting so that's a good sign
the next two weren't as complicated, both mostly long drawn with a higher twist, then I did my first attempt at plying from a centre pull ball with day 2, and it actually went okay and I'm not so scared of it anymore so I did the same for day 3 ajdjdj, yippee for no fibre loss !!
I want to keep this up for the rest of the advent, but I don't think I'm gonna manage that by the end of the year lol, it's taken be this long to spin the first three and my wrist is very not happy about it, so I'm gonna keep trucking along with them at my own pace between wrist brakes heehee ^-^
I can鈥檛 believe there are people putting orders for advent yarn sets for next Christmas already. It seems like a red flag to me but I can鈥檛 explain why. I am just putting away my Christmas decorations and done with the holidays and here dyers are thinking about orders for next year. I understand they are small businesses and fulfilling orders takes time, but is it really necessary?
I鈥檓 doing an advent calendar this month - each day I get an ounce of fiber to spin. They all are named after drinks or little baked treats - although so far I haven鈥檛 explored the recipes too much! I took the fiber from the first five days and spun two bobbins (I have pictures of each fiber except day 5).
I took those bobbins and plied them today. It鈥檚 about 5 ounces and 420 yards - but we鈥檒l see how it changes after I wash it. I鈥檓 calling it Berry Parfait. It鈥檚 a two ply yarn , done in large blocks of color, so it鈥檚 a nice long gradient.
I had been working one day behind opening each bag, but I think I鈥檒l just be two days behind now, because plying this much takes a while. I鈥檝e been catching up the past month-ish of podcasts while I spin most days. It鈥檚 been fun to take a break each day and do this before (or after) working on my todo list.
