Sons of Mars refs and nods pt1

I put a lot of references into Sons of Mars and I thought it'd be fun to have a post detailing all the nods and research from the comics there are!

The title is a spin on the Martian Manhunter solo (written by John Ostrander and drawn by Tom Mandrake) collection title.

We pulled the idea of J'onn and Ma'al going on a pilgrimage as a form of revisiting their origin story from the first issue of the "Son of Mars" collection, Pilgrimage. This line is lifted more or less from the comic (we even wanted J'onn to be talking to Clark like he does in the source material).

Double Stuff the cat is from Action Comics #1037 Martian Manhunter: A Face In The Crowd (written by Shawn Aldridge and art by Adrianna Melo)

This line about memories being passed down as a form of history is from In my Life (pt 1) (written by Ostrander, drawn by Eduardo Barreto). We pulled most of J'onn and Ma'al's relationship from this comic, since it goes into a lot of detail about their origin.

The general look of Mars (from the martians to the environments) largely pull from Martian Manhunter 2019: Identity (written by Steve Orlando with art by Riley Rossmo). I really like that they clearly took their time to develop a unique visual language for Mars, especially the organic look of the buildings and the fun shapes of the spaceships. Rossmo does not get enough credit for creating such a fresh take on not only the environments but the martians as well! All the martians look unique and have different outfits, which we wanted to do as well!

Our only rule for the environment was that we didn't want any pyramids. Because ancient astronaut theory is racist garbo and I don't want it in my Martian worldbuilding!

This page with Sha'sheen and M'yrnn is a direct homage to their page from In my Life. Idk how it happened but the parents look very t4t in our version lol

Telescope romance scene is from MM 2019: Identity! The color scheme and the vibes were already great, I didn't change much haha. M'yri'ah's characterization, J'onn geeking out about other planets, and J'onn's parents' disapproval of M'yri'ah as a partner are all from Identity. I really liked how that story fleshed her out as a character.

I also based M'yri'ah's design off of her Identity true and public forms. I went for less pixar-mom hourglass shape and more buff and built since she's a fighter in our version. We wanted her to be as much a renaissance man as J'onn is often depicted as.

M'yri'ah refers to Earth as Thu'ulc'andra and Mars is referred to as Ma'aleca'andra in our comic. This is a continuation of Ostrander referencing CS Lewis' Space Trilogy for how martians named other planets. However! In Ostrander's version he named earth Per'elandra, which is what Venus is referred to in the Space trilogy. This was later changed via community poll by Orlando for Identity.

Kind of a homage to In my Life (pt3): Earthfall, but really I found an opportunity to continue the tradition of showcasing martian boinking that always happens in J'onn's origin story for some reason.

Not a Martian Manhunter reference, but more a new spin on White Martians. Inspired off of the Draag from the French film, Fantastic Planet. I love colossal set pieces~

baby wren bites everyones fingers

baby wren is literally half shark and nothing can convince taylor otherwise. she chews on the crib bars, on the countertops, on her binky’s and her own little fingers, but yes oh god. taylor does notice that she only does it with people she fully trusts, which is one of the sweetest and saddest things about babies; and people in general. did wren ever trust timothy and adrianna like this? did they slowly chip away at her willingness to forgive until she just couldn’t trust them anymore, her body physically reacted to their behavior whether she recognized that or not? it breaks taylor’s heart just thinking about. there are very few people baby wren trusts, and that list is tree, andrea, travis, taylor, and oddly chad. those are the only people allowed to hold her, the only people she won’t fuss about when they come into the room, and subsequently the only people she tries to eat. she just grabs their finger with her chubby little baby fist, and she pulls it up to her mouth with about as much coordination as olivia climbing on the mantle in the dark at three in the morning, and then it’s over from there, they’re not getting their fingers back anytime soon without her thrashing her little legs and whining. it becomes so much of a habit while she’s teething that everyone just starts washing their hands before they hold her. like taylor could’ve just woken up and she’ll still wash her hands before she goes to get wren because she knows it’ll three seconds before she only has one hand to her name and the others is officially wrens until she distracts her with french toast.

Chapter 13 fieldwork: Immigration

For this assignment I interviewed my friend and partner Adrianna in my sociology law class, Adrianna is African, she emigrated from Cameroon when she she 9 years old June 20, 2010. Her and her family emigrated because of the lack of opportunities. Andrianna's mother was the first to emigrate in 2003. She came with her brother and sisters both 10 years of age. For the first 3 years her mother would go from house to house but then began working two jobs in a shop and caregiving while also in college. Her mothers brother ( Adrianna's uncle) bought her her first car & her mom was then able to get an apartment. From her mom already being in the U.S it made it easier from her and her siblings to get a visa. Once Adrianna started school she did not speak English only French. while in Cameroon she had just finished 3rd grade but because of how old she was technically in the U.S she was supposed to be in the 4th grade. Adrianna was in a ESOL program (English for speakers of other languages) while also taking regular classes. With that being said her family and her transitioned over to using English within there household causing Adrianna to loose some of her native language (French). Since she did not speak english in grade school Adrianna was outcastes for not being able to communicate with other students also at the same time her mother was gaining her citizenship. During that time Adrianna and her family learned to adapt to American culture changing the way they spoke, dress, interacted with others. Adrianna found that adjusting to a new accent as a kid was easier than an adult changing their accent. Adrianna's experience in elementary school was hard because the kids were ignorant and unfair, they did not take well to foreigners. The kids in the elementary School took to bullying her, until she finally learned the American language she began to stand up for herself. This had a really big impact on Adrianna because it caused her to disassociate from other africans until she got to high school and began to associate and embrace her culture more. In 2012 Adrianna's dad emigrated to the U.S and began living with the family. For her dad, back in Cameroon he was already fully established and successful, once he got to the U.S. he had to go through the whole college process of gaining a degree in accounting once more and decided not to. From there he decided to just to do different jobs back and forth. Adrianna's mom obtained her citizenship in 2016 which made Adrianna and her sibling citizens through their mother, she also graduated from college in 2016. Adrianna says that she will forever be grateful for her Mothers decision to migrate to the U.S for a better life, Although she loved Cameroon she says she would be lying if she said that moving to the U.S. was not the best choice. Current day Adrianna's family visits Cameroon every two years.

In my opinion Genderbend Adrien should be named Adrianna (Adrianne) instead of Adrienne. Adrienne is kind of an old name not really used anymore while Adrianna is more modern and pretty popular nowadays.
