I FIGURED OUT HOW NOT TO BREAK REBORN'S TIMELINES (MUCH)
TLDR: in my version of events, my self-insert (Adriana) now appears in all three timelines, not just the last two. The first is used for my selfship with Elena, and is reset as normal with nothing bad happening to Adriana; the second is used for my selfship with Luna, and is reset with an extra sacrifice needed due to Adriana’s fate there; the third is also used for my selfship with Luna, and ends in success thanks to the player being an additional presence. Adriana has a different outfit or appearance in each timeline, to help with differentiating them all.
Further explanation can be found under the readmore, if you'd like to know more! ..There will be some spoilers mentioned for the game, but I hope that the things I talk about are helpful for assisting your understanding if you aren’t as familiar with Reborn itself. I'm also more than happy to answer questions if anyone has any!! ^-^
The first timeline (pre-gameplay)
We don't know as much about the first timeline compared to the other two, and it also doesn't get to the same point that the other two do, but it's the one where everything technically kicks off from, so it's still important. In this timeline, Adriana is a Pokémon Trainer of some sort who travels to visit the Reborn region from her home in Kalos, and eventually ends up getting into a relationship with Elena of the Elite Four after bonding over a shared fondness for Ghost-types, gaining a greater appreciation for them in the process. (I have yet to figure out how Corey factors into this; for now, I am saying Elena has two hands.) More details will hopefully come with time.
The first timeline is eventually reset after the continued distortions and earthquakes afflicting Reborn, caused by Solaris wielding the power of Giratina, force Zina to have to fix things, sealing Giratina away in Byxbysion in the process and sacrificing her existence to facilitate the change and reset. Adriana was not a particularly prevalent character for many of the actual ongoing events here.. but this ends up changing after the timeline starts over again.
Anything I make within this timeline - so, anything to do with my selfship with Elena - can be identified by Adriana having a different outfit, and possibly also hairstyle. My first pass for this outfit, made within Pokémon Y, is this:
Tumblr media
The second timeline (Episode 18)
This is the timeline seen by Miss Fortune, as well as being the one that has more direct relevance to in-game events, particularly in the postgame. Here, Adriana once again comes to Reborn, but at a slightly different time in her life - specifically, she decides to pick the region’s league as her first league challenge after finding some slightly misleading (in that it’s ten years out of date) marketing for it. From the moment she arrives rather explosively at Grandview Station, her journey goes completely differently to how she was expecting it to, as she ends up entangled in trying to stop Team Meteor while also collecting Gym Badges, eventually succeeding in obtaining all 18 (even if she did have to get two Poison- and Fighting-type ones due to.. extraneous circumstances). She ends up in a romantic relationship with Luna along the way as well, and even successfully rescues her from the Void.
This timeline follows the game’s events as they existed in Episode 18, with two key exceptions - Euphie still exists as Euphie, and Fern either does not join or eventually breaks away from Team Meteor. This is to fit what Miss Fortune sees. It also extends past the gym battle against Hardy, despite the game only being finished up to that point when this episode was the most recently-released one.
In this timeline, Adriana fully takes on the player character’s position as the protagonist, and experiences everything in the story as it existed in E18. The story then continues until she reaches the final battle with Lin, who drags her into the New World and removes its oxygen; Anna summons everyone’s hopes to make a wish to help her, but it turns out to not be strong enough, and she ends up unable to be saved, leaving Anna and others distraught. Fern then steps up to be the hero, working alongside Cal, Euphie, Arclight, and others to try and counter Lin and the havoc she is playing in the region - but he also doesn’t succeed. As a result, Anna ends up following in her mother’s footsteps by resetting the timeline again to fix the problems caused by Lin, with Nostra (her Jirachi) as the sacrifice; however, a second sacrifice is also deemed to be required to bring Adriana back, and this ends up being Euphie’s body, allowing Shade to exist as he is seen in-game in the next timeline.
Anything to do with my selfship with Luna that is set in the second timeline can be identified in two ways. The first is that Adriana uses a wide variety of Pokémon here, with no clear type specialty; examples include Delphox, Roserade, Ampharos, Silvally, Honchkrow, and Aegislash. The second is that Adri’s freckles are an ordinary dark brown colour; while she does become void-kissed in this timeline, I don’t know if I will say that this has any physical consequences on her here.
Tumblr media
The third/current timeline (Episode 19)
This is the timeline that you actually are in when you play the game itself, so it arguably has the most prevalence. Here, Adriana’s first journey as a Pokémon Trainer is around her home region of Kalos, before she then decides to go and challenge the Reborn League. On the train there, she is sat next to another person (the player character), and is therefore able to be saved alongside them by Amethyst at the beginning. From there, Adriana travels across the Reborn region in a way that largely mirrors the path of the player; she appears many times throughout the story and experiences many of the same events that they do, so would arguably be counted as their rival if not for how she doesn’t actually push the dynamic in that direction. She once again ends up in a relationship with Luna, whom she is able to spend more time with here due to not having to experience every single story event, and her presence is indeed able to help make Anna’s wish succeed and save the player from suffering the same fate that she did. (I am only familiar with the Anna Route of postgame, so I tend to treat that as the default when Adri is present.)
Before the postgame begins, Adriana becomes the second person to make it through Charous Hall after the player, so she becomes their reserve (or, Shadow) Champion, having not been able to actually battle them for their title because she achieved this while they were temporarily missing. In the postgame itself, she does a small number of the in-game legendary quests, and eventually fully realises her status as the previous timeline’s hero when reunited with the original Giratina. This property turns out to be key to letting the player reach the grand finale.
My portrayals of Adriana, and/or my selfship with Luna, that are set within this timeline can be identified in two ways. The first is that Adri uses almost entirely Ghost-type Pokémon here; the only exceptions are her Shiny Silvally, her Gothitelle (whom she later gifts to Luna), and possibly some of the legendaries and mythicals she catches in the postgame (like Cresselia and Darkrai). The second way to identify third timeline events is that her freckles are white from the beginning, which was a physical consequence of having to bring her back to life and mess with the timeline to make sure she made it back (since.. Nostra ended up choosing another person, the player, to be the protagonist for this timeline - but it was vital that Adriana also came to Reborn as well as them, despite not having their role this time, because otherwise there might not be enough people to power Anna’s wish again if she needed to make it one more time. However, because Adriana is not from Reborn, it wasn’t guaranteed that she would return there after the timeline got reset. So, more meddling than usual had to happen to bring her back, mostly carried out by Shade, but this ended up having effects on Adri herself - this is how I bring in the whole anamnesis aspect). These consequences also get worse after she becomes void-kissed again, as a white star-like pattern forms all across her face and hair, and culminate in the full visibility of a pair of spectral wings on Adriana’s back, resembling the wings of a Reborn-Shiny Giratina.
Tumblr media
Bonus: Another Time
This is the name given to the alternate/hypothetical future that you visit during the postgame while doing the Celebi quest, as the player ends up travelling ten years into the future with Celebi during this quest before returning to the present day. Due to the player disappearing from the present in this version of events, Adriana once again fills the role of Champion in their absence, just as she did before the postgame started. However, she is eventually defeated for the first time by Shelly, some time after the cast are able to figure out that the player travelled through time. She continues to hold her role as Shadow Champion when Shelly first becomes the Champion, but eventually steps down to allow her to select a new reserve. By the time of the player's return, ten years later, Adriana has taken over Shade's role as the Ghost-type Gym Leader of the Reborn League; she takes her battles in Iolia Valley, just as Luna did.
Since Another Time is explored after a ten-year timeskip, Adriana's appearance will definitely have changed in it like how everyone else's does, but I haven't quite decided how yet. However, since it is an alternate version of events within the third timeline, her physical appearance will stay the same as it does there (white freckles, etc.)
Thank you so much for taking the time to read this!! Please don’t hesitate to ask me if you have any questions, no matter how big or small!

Also! I have been trying to finally update the info posts that aren’t properly formatted yet, and of all the ones I got stuck on/distracted by, it was of course the one for my selfship with Elena. This is partially due to the nature of this selfship as being set in an AU that changes some story details, but also just generally because Elena is amazing and I love her a lot, even if her relative lack of presence in the story (she’s talked about a fair bit but she only shows up as herself in the postgame for one part of one quest..) means it can be tricky to talk about her unprompted.
There will never be an end to the Reborn focus. I really really need to play that game more again

Echo's romantic selfships: Birds in the Night Sky (Elena/Adriana)
"the view from up here is even nicer when we're sharing it"
==============================
romantic F/O: Elena Molinar (Pokémon Reborn)
character tag: love: soaring skyspectre (elena)
selfship tag: selfship: birds in the night sky (elena/adriana)
associated self-insert: Adriana Laverre (when not selfshipped with Luna)
self-insert tag: self-insert: soul-touched (adriana)
selfship start date: 31st May 2022
comfort sharing romantically: okay with sharing!
==============================
Skyspectre Elena is one of the Elite Four of the Reborn Pokémon League, specialising in Flying- and Ghost-types. Adriana Laverre is a Pokémon Trainer from Kalos who also specialises in Ghost-types, having previously successfully completed a journey around her home region using them.
This selfship takes place in an AU called the early arrival AU, where Adriana travels to Reborn City from Kalos at the same age but approximately fifteen years before the start of Pokémon Reborn as a game. She ends up quickly forming a bond with Elena due to their shared type specialty, and the two of them end up talking a lot and eventually falling in love. Adri eventually becomes the region's Ghost-type Gym Leader, retaining this position when later fought by the playable protagonist.
I am still ironing out some of the details of this selfship to make it fit into the pre-existing story of the game more.

VS SHOW FASHION REVIEW: MY FAVS
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THE BEST: we’re starting off with my top three, Bella Hadid, Lila Moss, and Paula Soares.
10000/10, I absolutely loooove these three looks, I love the pink fur coat and the stars on the bra in the second one.
I also love Bella’s coat, and that the lingerie is more simple and lets the big coat shine. Face card never declines, as always.
Paula’s is probably my favorite, I love when VS does rockstar themes (like in 2017). Her hair, the long sleeve, the star bra, it’s so cool. The wings on the heals aren’t my favorite, but they’re not horrible.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
RED: Adriana Lima, Grace Elizabeth, Candace Swanepoel, Vittoria Cerreti
I love this Adriana look wayyyy more than her first one. I would have loved to see her natural curls with this looks or with a classic VS blowout.
Grace and Adriana both have similar sets/rompers and they both look stunning. I didn’t love the wings with the writing, some of them looked a little cheap, but I do think the one’s Grace is wearing looked the best.
I love Candace’s ribbon bow on the back and her makeup and hair go together so well.
I absolutely love Vittoria’s top here and her shoes. I feel like 95% of the wings this year sucked (and they gave them to some actual angels while other angels didn’t get them, which is odd) but hers look good with this look.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
GOLD, SILVER, AND BLACK GLAMOUR: Irina Shayk, Alessandra Ambrosio, Ashley Graham.
I love Irina’s train (is that what you’d call it?) and her dark hair looks gorgeous with the look.
I’m so glad Alessandra got wings and they are beautiful. Truly a gold dust woman.
I really enjoyed Ashley’s whole look, like Irina, her dark hair looks beautiful with the look. I also think the cape and wings look gorg!
PART TWO SOON

Okay I could NEVER be as good as the OG calendar anon but I thought I’d make one since they’ve gone missing. Hopefully y’all like it! <3
January: Happy New Year! Dirty Dominik Mysterio is looking forward to another year of criminal acts and peggings from Mami, he’s so excited at the Judgement Day New Years party that he’s stripped out of all his clothes and has two bottles of champagne going, he pours one dramatically into his open mouth, letting some of it drip out the sides of his lips and down his slender body, the other is held just in front of his dick and balls. He’s holding the bottle there deliberately, not letting us get a look at his junk; only Mami gets to see the goods.
February: Picture the scene: Valentines Day, fancy Italian restaurant, candles everywhere, rose petals surrounding the table. Sitting opposite each other is Tony D and Stacks. Adriana Rizzo is in the background serving cunt (& meatballs!). The two men are sitting so close together, their faces only an inch or two apart, looking lovingly into each other’s eyes. The tablecloth obscures the view for everyone but us, and we can see that under the table Stacks is secretly rubbing his foot against the hardening bulge of The Don.
March: Class is back in session for the Spring Semester at Chase U, but Riley Osborne was late for one of Andre Chase’s lectures. Everyone knows bad behaviour has to be punished! Riley is seen bent over Andre’s desk at the front of the class, his pants dropped to his ankles, with Mr Chase winding his palm back around ready to spank the bare ass of his student. The MVP of Chase U, Duke Hudson is also there, sitting at his desk but with a flushed red face, using a textbook to cover the boner he’s got from watching his twunky tag team parter getting spanked.
April: There’s an Easter egg hunt happening at the PC but Carmelo Hayes (dressed in his slutty crop top and a pair of tiny gym shorts) has been distracted by a trail of candy on the floor leading him into the locker room. His eyes are locked into the candy until they appear on the locker room bench in front of him and stop abruptly in between two powerful oiled up thighs belonging to Trick Williams. Trick is completely naked with a seductive look on his face and is holding an Easter egg in front of his beautiful dick, almost teasing Melo to dig in.
May: The Cinco de Mayo celebrations are underway for Angel Garza & Humberto Carrillo in some kind of dance club. You can tell they they were initially dressed in traditional clothes but they have been thrown to the side and they’re now moving their nearly naked and sweaty bodies along to the music. The men are in tiny thongs that leave VERY little to the imagination. They’re dancing on small tables while everyone gazes lustfully at them and their sensual moves, drawn to the cousins curvy and juicy asses. The camera catches Angel mid twerk, while a horny tío slips a few dollars into Humberto’s bulging thong. The Lotharios can’t help it, they love to show off!
June: Summer is the perfect time for volleyball! It’s a Raw vs Smackdown volleyball game for brand supremacy. Austin Theory & Grayson Waller vs The Creeds. Both teams are wearing speedos that are colour coordinated with their brand. We all know Austin’s is not stranger to a blue speedo 😉 Both teams are shining; is it the sun? sweat? baby oil? who cares, they look like gods! Austin is stood to the left of the picture, his shapely ass spilling out of the tiny blue speedo, watching his glistening partner soaring through the air to slap the ball. On the other side of the image, Julius is jumping through the air hoping to block Grayson’s shot, his heavy shlong protruding obscenely from his speedo. Brutus is still face-down on the sand after initially saving the point, his thick ass pointing to the sky.
July: CAAAAW 🦅MURICA 🇺🇸 happy 4th of July y’all! Cody Rhodes loves America so much that he even sleeps in a bed with an American flag duvet! This candid picture was taken of him just after waking up, one half of his body still tangled in the bedsheet, the other above it, with him laying on his stomach. Silly Cody was very tired the night before and went to bed completely naked, so here he is presenting his smooth All American bubble butt to the camera. A sliver of morning sunlight peeking through the window is perfectly illuminating the curves of his body and ass. Gawd bless the U S A.
August: Bash in Berlin is the first WWE PPV to ever happen in Germany, so what better way to celebrate the occasion that with some German delicacies. WWE has superstars doing promotional work across the country. Oh no, looks like someone forgot their lederhosen 🫢 Ludwig Kaiser will have to be naked instead I guess? He’s in a German tavern, holding a massive overflowing plate of thick German sausages in front of his lean muscular body. Luckily for him, one of the thickest sausages is dangling off the plate in the perfect position to cover his own huge meat.
September: Harvesting season has begun for Brooks Jensen and he’s busy trying to fix this goshdarn tractor. Farming is sweaty work so he’s thrown his plaid shirt to the side. He’s stretching himself across the giant tractor wheel to fix the problem, forgetting that he’s wearing a jockstrap under his denim bootyshorts, and his stretching has given us all an eyeful of his fat country ass framed by a few flimsy bits of fabric. Typical himbo!
October: It’s not such a happy Halloween for Dragon Lee since he’s being chased down backstage by cock-hungry zombies! 😨 he was preparing for a match when the outbreak happened so was caught off guard by the attack, they clawed at his glistening body and tore some of his tiny trunks leaving parts of his ass exposed for all to see.
November: It’s Thanksgiving for the WWE roster and many of them are sitting around a long table, ready to feast. But wait, that’s not a turkey in the middle of the table… that’s Jey Uso’s giant ass! He’s completely naked On a large serving platter and surrounded by seasonal vegetables while his humongous cheeks are being used as the table centrepiece and they look as shiny and delicious as a well-basted turkey!
December: Some people need to just stop fighting and kiss-and-make-up, none moreso than CM Punk and Seth Rollins, and what better way to do that than meeting underneath the mistletoe. They’re both wearing adorable Christmas jumpers but the kiss they’re giving each other is far from adorable. It’s nasty, passionate, sloppy, tongues deep inside each others mouths. Punk’s hand has slipped under Rollins’ pants and has a vice grip on his asscheek, while Seth has one of his wrapped around Punk’s throat. Don’t you just love Christmas?!

Rimilda, Bastard Daughter of all Great Ones: [ageless]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"All sounds range in tone, yet silence rings the loudest... Child of many, yet child of none... Bastardized child of a wedlock marriage, born into the world by empty womb... Birth by the blood of the limitless mother of all and her harem of souls... Parasite of the eggs of a whore, a holy nun, and an undead queen who lost her young to creatures untold... Fed by the blood of all cursed creatures of the night... Bonded to the blood of all Great Ones... Wrapped in the silver silk of arachnids... Fall, fall, fall into the arms of your mother, young Guardian of Yharham... Bare the face only They could love, with three pairs of wings to soar and quadruple the arms to wield your blades... And forever protect your name, O' Great One Rimilda."
Dissonantia— disguised as a hunter with a sickle + chain whip as her merge weapon, wearing a victorian era metal alicorn mask (like how Elise the Crow wears a bird mask) that has a curved horn, empty eye sockets and nostrils, and it's mouth is agape so Dissonantia can breathe out fire— created an "embryo" made out of her blood and the DNA of all of her spouses, the ovums of a whore (Adriana), a nun (Adelle), and a queen (Yharham), the blood of the drunken (almost every "normal" enemy in the game), a drop of blood from every Great One, and protected by the spiders' silk to form an artificial womb.
Rimilda was born similar to a butterfly, crawling up the side of the cocoon and slowly stretching and spreading out her feathered wings after ripping out of the spider webbing at the bottom, the fluids from her artificial womb pouring out.
Her face similar to Twisted Alice Angel from BATIM and BATDR, with the deformed side of her face covered with eyes and blemishes. Her right eye is a pale blue with a visible pupil, while her left eye is slightly swollen and completely black.
She has a forked tongue that acts similar to reptilian tongues.
Her body shape is slim and petite, half as tall as the Orphan of Kos. She has the same skin tone as him.
She thinks of him as an older brother figure.
She is mute most of the time, only talking to those who are worth her time.
She has six wings similar to Mergo's Wet Nurse, but with many shiny black eyes on them.
She has four arms, with the upper ones stretched out adorned with larger hands.
She has a serpent tail similar to the Godskins from Elden Ring.
Slimy purple snakes and black leech-like tendrils can come out of her mouth during a five-second grapple attack, biting the player and taking their health by 10 points.
She can be heard humming the Winter Lanterns' song from time to time.
She can form a blood whip by using her old umbilical cord that's attached to a bloody spiked morningstar. (Link)
She was given an unbreakable lanternflail. (Link)
She is constantly hungry, and often snacks on dead corpses to avoid eating the living if there isn't actual food nearby.
Her hair is made out of Kos's hair tentacles that slowly turn into black snakes at the tips. (Link)
She can become a giant hydra dragon (search up "false hydra") when "defeated" for the first round of a battle. (Link)

rose for the ask game!! @self-shippy
Elena: “Allllright! Step aside, everyone else, 'cause it’s my time to shine!”
(question source: "ꜰ/ᴏᴠᴇᴍʙᴇʀ ᴀꜱᴋ-ɢᴀᴍᴇ: ꜰʟᴏᴡᴇʀꜱ" by liberty-lovers)
[ROSE]: Just tell us your favourite things about Adriana~ - “Heh, well, where do I start? Have you seen her? I know she's from Kalos, but her sense of style is so.. Well, it's actually kind of basic, to be completely honest. Long black coat, black skirt and tights and long boots, purple gloves and bag, cute little hat with a flower on it. Not the most outlandish of outfits.. But! It's also very fashionable and makes my own ensemble stand out even more when I'm with her. So it works!~
(Also, she's beautiful, but that part's obvious.)
Then, of course, I've got to give a shoutout to her Pokémon. Now, my team is made up of all the Pokémon I think are cute - Drifblim, Salamence, Marowak, all that lot. And you'd think Adri might be the same when you see her with her little purple Pumpkaboo, right? But then you challenge her to a battle, and bam, it's Aegislash time! I told her once she should learn how to fight with it like she's a knight with a sword, only for her to tell me her Aegislash actually was the sword of her ancestor, more than three thousand years ago! How cool is that?! Honestly, if Euphie ever moved on from being the Ghost leader - which, for the record, I don't think is happening anytime soon - then I'd get Adri in there ASAP. She's technically on the same level as me when you think about it, given how she's beaten Kalos' Elite Four with her team - and that's saying something! Sure, she might not come across as the strongest Trainer, but underestimate her at your peril! Maybe she’ll even get to be on the Elite Four with me one day.. but then one of us might have to switch type specialties. Hmm. I’d have to think about how that would work.
..Okay, we're gonna be here all day if I keep on like this. I know you asked for favourite things, about her, which could well be all my favourite things about her, but.. I feel like that gives you a good idea of it for now. So thanks for stopping by! And, if you had any other things you wanted to ask, you know where I am! Right then, see you!”

birds in the night sky (Elena/Adriana)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
setting: Pokémon Reborn romantic F/O: Elena Molinar self-insert: Adriana Laverre names for the selfship: birds in the night sky, elenadri, nightskyshipping, early arrival AU selfship start date: 31st May 2022
Content for this selfship: on this blog | on previous blogs
Some more things you might like to know about this selfship are under the readmore!
As this post demonstrates, Elena's character tag is "love: soaring skyspectre (elena)", while Adriana's tag is "self-insert: soul-touched (adriana)". The tag for the selfship as a whole is "selfship: birds in the night sky (elena/adriana)", but you can also find content for it under the tag "early arrival AU"!
This selfship takes place in a separate version of events to my selfship with Luna, called the early arrival AU. In this AU, Adriana travels to the Reborn region about 15 or so years before the game normally starts, and she and Elena meet and quickly bond over a shared fondness for Ghost-type Pokémon. After spending a lot of time together, they end up developing feelings for each other.
The details of the AU are still somewhat under construction, but Adriana is the Ghost-type Gym Leader of the Reborn League as faced by the player, and she awards the Spectre Badge upon successful defeat. Content of her in this AU can be identified by her having dark brown freckles that are only on her face, as opposed to my selfship with Luna where she has white star-like freckles all over her body and hair.

U.S. boosts support for Ukraine (BBC) President Biden opened NATO’s 75th anniversary summit on Tuesday by announcing more military aid for Ukraine. Mr Biden described Nato as a force for democracy, in contrast with "autocrats" who sought to "overturn global order". His remarks also portrayed support for Nato as a bipartisan issue in the US. His rival in the upcoming presidential election, former president Donald Trump, has been less steadfast in his commitment to Nato members, whom he criticised again during a campaign rally. For all Mr Biden's reassurance, allies such as the UK are already making contingency plans for a Trump victory in November.
Metal Thieves Are Stripping America’s Cities (NYT) The 6th Street Bridge in Los Angeles is wired to glow with colorful lights celebrating the city’s spirit. But the bridge, known as the “Ribbon of Light,” goes dark at night now. So do stretches of the busy 405 freeway and dozens of street blocks across the city. And in Las Vegas and surrounding communities, more than 970,000 feet of electrical wiring, the equivalent of 184 miles, have gone missing from streetlights over the past two years. The lights are going out across American cities because thieves have been stripping copper wire out of thousands of streetlights and selling it to scrap metal recyclers for cash. The wiring typically fetches only a few hundred dollars, but blacked-out lights pose safety hazards to drivers and pedestrians, and are costing cities millions to repair. Metal theft has been an urban plague for decades, often rising alongside commodity prices. But the combination of the economic ills and social malaise lingering since the pandemic and soaring demand for metals, especially for copper, has brought this street crime to new levels.
Record-breaking heat suspected in at least 7 deaths as temperatures soar across U.S. (NBC News) The sweltering heat wave gripping parts of the U.S. has shattered heat records and sparked an air quality health advisory, and it is suspected of having contributed to at least seven deaths. More than 130 million people across the West, the East Coast, southeast Texas and South Florida were under heat alerts Tuesday, and a huge swath of the Western U.S. sweltered in “red flag” conditions because of the risk of wildfires. More than 1.5 million customers in Texas were still without power Wednesday afternoon, depriving many of air conditioning during the heat wave, 48 hours after Hurricane Beryl made landfall on the Gulf Coast.
They Fled Oppression at Home, but It Followed Them Abroad (NYT) The line outside the Venezuelan Consulate in Madrid stretched down the block. Pregnant women, families with small children, older people and those with disabilities arrived as early as 4 a.m.—five hours before the office opened—trying to register to vote in Venezuela’s highly anticipated presidential election. Adriana Rodríguez, 47, who left Venezuela in 2018, showed up at 8 a.m., two days in a row. Both times, she waited four hours before reaching the front of the line, only to be turned away, she said, always with the same explanation: “They could not register any more people.” With Venezuela’s authoritarian president, Nicolás Maduro, trailing badly in polls ahead of the July 28 vote, the government has imposed stringent rules making registering to vote nearly impossible for millions of Venezuelans living abroad, including in the United States, Spain and Latin American countries. Many left their homeland because of harsh economic and political conditions. As a result, the government’s tactics are tantamount to sweeping electoral fraud, election experts say, since as many as 25 percent of Venezuela’s eligible voters live outside the country, and a large number would most likely not vote for Mr. Maduro.
UK’s overflowing prisons present PM Starmer with early crisis (Reuters) The scale of the challenge facing Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s new government is writ large in Britain’s prisons, which are within weeks of being too full to accept new inmates, leaving the government with unpalatable and costly choices. Britain has western Europe’s highest rate of incarceration, according to the World Prison Brief database and faces a crisis after a new building programme failed to keep track with tougher sentencing laws that have fuelled a growing prison population. Already many prisons are housing two inmates in cells built for one.
Is France governable? The budget is an early test (Reuters) Just a couple of weeks ago, France was under scrutiny over how it would plug the holes in its budget. Now the issue is whether the euro area’s second largest economy can muster a budget at all. What France does with its strained public finances will be an early test of whether it can still be governed after the hung parliament created by President Emmanuel Macron’s move to call snap elections. Financial markets, the European Commission and its euro zone partners are all watching closely. France is already way above its EU-mandated deficit limits. “A divided National Assembly will find it hard to agree on politically difficult spending cuts,” said Leo Barincou, senior economist at Oxford Economics, referring to France’s parliament.
Fed up with tourists, Barcelona protesters blast them with water guns (Washington Post) Thousands took to the streets of Barcelona over the weekend to protest overtourism, some armed with brightly colored water pistols that sent bewildered visitors fleeing restaurant patios, abandoning half-eaten meals. The protesters, who carried signs reading “Tourists go home,” say tourism has inflated the cost of living for Barcelonians, while the revenue from visitors hasn’t been fairly distributed across the city. As travel rebounds after the end of pandemic restrictions, the frustration in Spain reflects growing backlash against overtourism around the world.
Italy is a hotbed of volcanic activity (The Week) Italy’s Mount Etna and Mount Stromboli, two volcanoes only 180 km apart, have both erupted in recent days, spewing smoke and ash into the air. “Etna, one of the world’s most active volcanoes, has seen intense activity in recent days, lighting up the sky near the city of Catania, while Stromboli off the northern Sicilian coast has spilled lava into the sea,” said USA Today. However, these volcanoes only represent a fraction of the threat Italy faces. Italy has 12 volcanoes total, with nine still considered active, and the country is prone to earthquakes and other seismic activity. One of the most famous disasters resulting from this combination is the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, which destroyed the city of Pompeii in 79 A.D. Now scientists are worried an even bigger disaster could be on the horizon. “With 24 hidden underground craters, the Campi Flegrei, a so-called supervolcano, dwarfs the better-known Vesuvius,” said Politico. Since the summer of 2023, several small earthquakes have appeared in the region, causing concern around a potentially catastrophic future eruption. The last time the Campi Flegrei supervolcano erupted was 500 years ago, and the effects were widespread.
Another year of heat and floods in China (Washington Post) Three years after Zhengzhou was hit with China’s deadliest flash floods in decades, the central Chinese city was underwater once again. For over three hours on Monday afternoon, 9.21 inches of rain was dumped on this city of 13 million—and forced an all-out effort to prevent a repeat of 2021, when 300 died in a sudden deluge that flooded the subway and trapped people in submerged cars. China’s summer has begun with a massive emergency response effort in multiple provinces to prevent extreme weather, now routine, from turning into a political and humanitarian crisis for the ruling Communist Party. After last year’s record-breaking heat waves, June brought drought, floods and typhoons—sometimes quickly coming one after the other. Extreme heat delayed crop planting in eastern Shandong province weeks before it was hit with floods. Beijing has now made adapting to bouts of extreme weather a greater policy priority. Last week, weather officials issued an unusually direct warning about the country’s vulnerability to intensifying heat and rainfall worsened by climate change. Forecasts for the rest of July underscore a sense of urgency: Torrential rain is expected in 18 regions across the country. The government has sent in hundreds of soldiers, relocated tens of thousands of villagers, and allocated $200 million to aid disaster relief.
How Hezbollah is trying to counter Israel’s high-tech surveillance (Reuters) Coded messages. Landline phones. Pagers. Following the killing of senior commanders in targeted Israeli airstrikes, the Iran-backed Lebanese militant group, Hezbollah, has been using some low-tech strategies to try to evade its foe’s sophisticated surveillance technology, informed sources told Reuters. The sides have been trading fire since Hezbollah’s Palestinian ally in the Gaza Strip, Hamas, went to war with Israel in October. Tens of thousands of people have fled both sides of the border. Israeli strikes have killed more than 330 Hezbollah fighters and around 90 civilians in Lebanon, according to Reuters tallies. Israel says attacks from Lebanon have killed 21 soldiers and 10 civilians. Israel’s electronic eavesdropping—including hacking into cell phones and computers—is widely regarded as among the world’s most sophisticated. Hezbollah has learned from its losses and adapted its tactics in response, sources familiar with the group’s operations told Reuters. Cell phones, which can be used to track a user’s location, have been banned from the battlefield in favour of more old-fashioned communication means, including pagers and couriers who deliver verbal messages in person. In case conversations are overheard, code words are used for weapons and meeting sites. These are updated nearly daily and delivered to units via couriers.
What a war between Israel and Hezbollah could mean (NZZ) At the moment, Beirut holds few signs of impending war. The bars in the Lebanese capital are packed, and planes are landing at the airport with entire families of Lebanese exiles determined to spend the summer in their old homeland. But for weeks, Israel and Hezbollah, which have been firing increasingly fiercely at each other over the Israel-Lebanon border, have been moving toward open warfare. Facing each other on the border between the two countries are probably the most powerful war machines in the Middle East. On one side is Israel's army, with its ultramodern air force and soldiers who have been battle-hardened by months of fighting in Gaza. On the other is the Iranian-backed Shiite militia Hezbollah, whose fighters recently gained experience in Syria, and which has more missiles and drones than many European armies. An open war could cause devastating damage on both sides—especially if Hezbollah decides to use its massive arsenal of missiles and drones against Israel. Nobody knows exactly how many rockets the militia actually has at its disposal, but experts assume the number is more than 100,000. Hezbollah also has Soviet Scud missiles and a limited number of Iranian Fateh-110 precision missiles. These longer-range weapons could be used against military installations—but also against population centers, ports or airports.
At NATO summit, Gaza is the elephant in the room (Washington Post) Ukraine’s plight as it resists Russian invasion is the central focus of NATO leaders gathering in the U.S. capital this week. But behind NATO’s urgent deliberations over Ukraine looms another conflict. Since Oct. 7, Israel’s devastating campaign in Gaza has taken global attention away from the Russian invasion and inflamed passions about perceived Western hypocrisy. Many critics pointed to the gap between U.S. and European ire over Russia attacking Ukrainian hospitals and their relative quiescence as Israel repeatedly levels medical facilities and schools in its war against militant group Hamas. “It is very clearly hypocrisy, a double standard,” Numan Kurtulmus, speaker of the Turkish parliament, said. In just a span of months, the Israeli bombardments have produced more rubble in Gaza than in multiple years of war in Ukraine. The densely packed territory has been pulverized. Reconstruction, whenever it starts, will take decades. Most Gazans have been forced from their homes and a sprawling set of humanitarian crises prevails, including, per U.N. experts, a full-blown famine. “When Russia invaded Ukraine, the West led the global campaign of condemnation. It called for the world to denounce Russia in the name of human rights and international law,” wrote Indonesian President-elect Prabowo Subianto earlier this year. “Today, however, the same countries are allowing yet another bloody conflict, this time in Gaza.”
